Because a candle is a system, not a container. The same bottle can be excellent in one maker's jar and disappointing in another's, and the reasons are boringly predictable: where the oil's weight sits in its note structure, whether it carries vanillin, which wax it is going into, how much of it the wax will hold, and how long you waited. Quick answers — read this first
Why does one oil smell strong and another thin in the same wax? Usually not concentration. The commonest causes are note structure (top-led oils announce themselves and fade; base-led oils build and persist), the load, and the cure you skipped — 62 of CSI's 107 oil pages state a soy cure window of 48–72 hours before you burn test at all.
Does the wax change how an oil performs? Yes, in numbers. 20 of 107 CSI pages state a separate load for soy and for paraffin, and on all 20 paraffin is lower — typically "Up to 10% for soy wax" against "Up to 6% for paraffin wax". One bottle, two ceilings.
Why did my white candle go yellow? Vanillin-carrying materials — cosmetic, not a performance fault. 62 of 107 pages state a vanillin or discolouration position; Dark Vanilla's answers it directly: "Yes. Dark Vanilla contains vanillin which causes yellowing in white and light-coloured wax."
So which oils work best? The ones whose stated behaviour matches the candle you are building — a 0%-vanillin single note for white wax in clear glass, a base-heavy gourmand for an amber jar you want smelled from the doorway. The decision rule is in the five factors below.
The short answer
"Better" is always "better at something": a bright citrus that wins the cold throw in a shop can be quieter than a heavy amber two hours into a burn. Decide which of the two matters for the candle you sell, then pick the structure that delivers it.
Four of the five factors are printed: the note structure, the stated load for your wax type, the vanillin or discolouration position, and the stated cure. The fifth — how it behaves on your wick, in your vessel — only a burn test gives you.
The wax sets the ceiling, not the oil: up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% on CSI 464, up to 13% on CSI 468. Where the oil page states a lower figure, the lower figure wins.
Every percentage is quoted from the oil's own CSI product page; the gram figures apply those percentages to a 200 g finished candle (10% is 20 g, 6% is 12 g). The pattern is the point: an oil comfortable at 10% in soy is stated at 6–8% in paraffin. If you moved an oil between wax types and it began sweating, you were not using it wrong — you were using the other wax's number.
Why do some fragrance oils work better in candles than others?
Because "working well" in a candle is not one property but five, and an oil strong on four can still fail on the fifth. One: note structure. Perfumery describes aroma materials in tiers by how quickly they evaporate — top notes register first and leave first, base notes build slowly and stay. A front-loaded oil reads brilliantly in the shop and quietly at hour two; one built on amber, musk, woods or tonka does the reverse. 88 of CSI's 107 oil pages publish that full structure, so you can read it before you buy. Two: the wax. The same bottle carries two stated ceilings — British Rose states "Up to 10% for soy wax candles … Up to 6% for paraffin wax candles", and 20 pages state that kind of pair. Three: the load, capped by the wax's stated maximum — 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% on CSI 464 — because wax holds oil in solution only up to a limit, past which the surplus sweats instead of scenting. Four: vanillin, where 62 pages take a position ranging from "Vanillin content 0% - no discolouration or yellowing in wax" to "will yellow white wax over time" — cosmetic, but customers judge it. Five: cure, with 62 pages stating 48–72 hours for soy as a floor and standard practice at 14–21 days. Four of the five are printed. The fifth, your wick, is yours.
One line: oils differ because candles differ — read the stated structure, the stated load for your wax type, the vanillin position and the stated cure, then let three jars settle the wick.
Comparing structures costs less than guessing. 15 g trial sizes from ₹81.42 are enough to smell an oil cold and pour one small jar, and every CSI oil page publishes what it states about note structure, load by wax type, vanillin and cure — and stays silent where it states nothing.
The five factors that decide whether an oil works in your candle
Nobody buys a fragrance oil. They buy a combination — and then blame whichever part of it they can smell.
When a maker says an oil "doesn't work", the oil is rarely the only thing that changed. Wax, load, wick, vessel diameter and cure length usually moved with it. The five factors below carry the result — and four can be settled before you spend anything.

Read the right-hand column as a map of the gaps. Structure is nearly always published; load usually is; cure is on well over half the range. Wick and vessel never are — 12 pages suggest a wick type but none can size one for your jar, because that depends on your vessel diameter, your wax and your load. The honest division of labour: the page narrows the field, the burn test picks the winner.
The mistake: changing two things and drawing a conclusion. A maker swaps oil and wax in one batch, gets a weak jar, and decides the new oil is poor. It might be — or the new wax states a lower ceiling, a lower pour temperature, or needs a different wick. Change one variable per batch and write the others down. Three jars differing in exactly one way teach you more than thirty differing in four, and cost less: three 200 g jars at 10% need 60 g of oil and 540 g of wax — one 100 gm bottle and a little over half a kilo.
Note structure: why a published pyramid predicts a burn
Here is the general principle, stated carefully because it is often overstated. Perfumery organises aroma materials by volatility — how readily a material evaporates at a given temperature. The convention is three tiers: top notes are the most volatile and register first, heart notes carry the body, base notes are the least volatile and last longest. That is a descriptive framework used across the fragrance trade, not a measurement of any particular oil, and no CSI page publishes evaporation data. What the pages do publish is which tier each material sits in for that specific oil, and that is enough to form a prediction.
The prediction: a candle presents fragrance two ways. Unlit, only the most volatile materials reach you from a cold surface, which is why a jar's cold throw is dominated by top notes. Lit, a melt pool holds the whole blend at a raised temperature for hours — the conditions heavier materials need. A front-loaded oil tends to sell itself on the shelf; one built on woods, amber, musk, tonka or vanilla tends to win the second hour. Neither is better; they are better at different jobs.

A structure is a hypothesis, not a promise
Nothing above is a measurement of throw. A published pyramid tells you what the blender put in and roughly where it sits; it does not tell you how much survives your pour, your wick or your room. Treat it as a reason to put an oil into a test, not into a range. Two CSI pages usefully describe strength as load-dependent: Dark Vanilla's states "Strong - impactful at lower loads, deeply rich at higher", Apple Cinnamon's "Strong - bold and festive at higher loads, subtly comforting at lower". The same oil, two waxes — and why a ceiling exists at all
If an oil behaved identically in every wax, the pages would publish one number. Twenty of them publish two.
Twenty of the 107 oil pages state a candle load per wax type, and on every one the paraffin figure is lower. Fourteen use "Up to 10% for soy wax" with "Up to 6% for paraffin wax"; six use "6-10% for soy wax candles" with "6-8% for paraffin wax". So an oil is not simply "good in candles" — it is stated at one level in one wax and lower in another. The waxes differ in the two things a fragrance cares about: how much oil the formulation holds, and how hot the pool runs. CSI's wax pages state both.

What each wax states, and what it means for an oil going into it
Where the oils' 6% and 6–8% paraffin figures do the work
Worked out above: load is a percentage of the finished candle, so a 200 g candle at 13% is 26 g of oil and 174 g of wax; at 10%, 20 g and 180 g; at 8%, 16 g and 184 g. The Chunks page phrases its 8–13% as a share "of total wax weight"; this series uses the share-of-finished-candle convention throughout. Every figure is the wax page's own and all are formulation limits, not regulatory limits. The CSI 468 row answers a question makers ask constantly. An oil with a low stated flash point — Gardenia's page states "Flashpoint 98°C" and instructs you to "add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C" — is easy in a wax whose stated pour is 58–60°C and needs care in one whose stated add band is 80–90°C. A stated ceiling is not a recipe preference either. It describes how much oil a solid wax holds in solution once set. Below the limit the oil is distributed through the wax and evaporates from the melt pool as the candle burns. Above it the surplus has nowhere to go: it migrates to the surface and the glass, shows as an oily film or beads under a lid, and feeds the wick something it was not sized for. That is the mechanism behind every sweating, separating, drowned-wick jar. The difference between a load that works and one that sweats is small in grams and obvious in the jar — here is the same 200 g candle at five loads, costed at three real price points.

Worked out above: oil cost = 1 kg price ÷ 1,000 × grams, priced on British Rose at ₹3.068 per gram. The same grams on the cheapest kilo here, Citrus Lemon at ₹2.832/g, come to ₹33.98, ₹45.31, ₹56.64, ₹67.97 and ₹73.63; on the dearest, Dark Vanilla at ₹7.646/g, ₹91.75, ₹122.34, ₹152.92, ₹183.50 and ₹198.80. The "allowed by" column combines each wax page's stated maximum with the oil pages' own candle bands — take the lower of the two every time.
Do not read the bottom row as the target. A stated maximum is the highest load the formulation holds, not the load at which a candle smells best; the second number is found by testing and is usually lower. A 6% oil in a 13% wax is not underdosed if 6% is the oil's own figure; an oil that smells weak at its ceiling will not improve past it, only sweat. The over-dosing mechanism is in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker.
Cure is the free lever — spend it before you spend money
Cure is the interval between pouring and judging, while the wax finishes crystallising and the fragrance distributes through it. 62 of the 107 oil pages state a soy window of 48–72 hours before burn testing and 22 add 24–48 hours for paraffin — Verbena's as a spec line, "Cure Time: 48–72 hours for soy wax 24–48 hours for paraffin wax", and Citrus Lemon's with a reason: "citrus fragrances benefit from full cure time to develop their best cold throw". Treat those as floors; standard practice for soy containers is 14–21 days. And the economics are lopsided: 100 candles of British Rose at 8% need 1,600 g of oil (1 kg ₹3,068 + 500 gm ₹1,593 + 100 gm ₹342.20 = ₹5,003.20), at 10% they need 2,000 g (₹6,136) — so the two-point step costs ₹1,132.80, ₹11.33 a candle, while twelve more days of waiting costs nothing. The CSI principle
An oil does not have a performance. A combination does — oil, wax, load, wick, vessel, cure. Change one and you have a new candle, not a new opinion about the oil.
Which is why the useful question is never "is this a good fragrance oil" but "is this a good fragrance oil for 180 g of CSI 464 in a 7 cm jar on a C1 wick after a fortnight". The first question has no answer. The second has one, and three jars will give it to you.
Vanillin: the one failure your customer photographs
Discolouration is the best-documented of these factors and the most misunderstood. Vanillin is an aroma material associated with vanilla and with many gourmand, tobacco, caramel and amber accords; in wax it can tone white or pale wax toward cream, yellow or brown, usually over weeks. It is cosmetic, not a performance fault — the pages say so plainly — but a white candle gone yellow in clear glass on a customer's shelf reads as a defect whatever the burn is doing. Sixty-two pages take a position, and the wording matters: the gap between "0%" and "Present" is the gap between a white-wax range and an amber-glass one.

What "no statement" means, and what it does not
Forty-five of the 107 pages take no position on vanillin — a gap in the listing, not a declaration of 0%. If a silent oil is a vanilla, tonka, caramel, tobacco, coffee or heavy amber, assume toning until a jar says otherwise; for a citrus, herbal or clean floral the risk is usually lower but still worth one jar. The test is free: pour one jar of the oil and one unscented jar from the same melt, keep both out of sunlight, compare at day 14. Before you scale a combination, get the paperwork with the pricing. SDS and IFRA documentation are supplied on request, and bulk pricing and GST invoicing are handled the same way. Working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026, a new oil-and-wax pairing needs to be poured by early October to allow a full 14–21 day cure and a burn test you are not rushing.
The three-oil comparison that actually answers "why"
Everything above narrows the field; this settles it. The design compares three oils of deliberately different structure in one wax, at one load, on one wick, at one cure length — so the only thing that differs is what you are trying to learn. One evening of pouring, one of burning a fortnight later.

Pick three oils that differ in structure, not in priceOne top-note-led (a citrus or fresh herbal), one middle-weighted (a floral or clean woody), one base-led (a gourmand, amber or vanilla). Weigh everything — load is a weight percentage, so a weighing scale at ₹354 is not optional.

Add at the wax page's stated temperature and record what the thermometer readNot the target — the reading. Eco Soy CSI 400 states fragrance in at 80–90°C (85°C) with two minutes of stirring; Chunks states add 80–90°C, pour 70–80°C; CSI 468 states melt 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C. If the oil's page carries its own temperature instruction, that wins. A pen thermometer at ₹354 makes the record real.

Pour two jars of each oil plus one unscented control, then score cold throw at day 3Seven jars. Two oils whose pages let you predict the burn
These are not "the best oils in the range" — that claim is unfalsifiable and we are not making it. They are the two opposite corners of the structure argument, and both pages publish enough to form a prediction before you spend anything: a stated structure, stated loads for soy and paraffin, a stated cure window, a stated vanillin position and a measured flash point. Each card shows every size, the price per 100 g, and how many 200 g candles at 10% each pack covers — 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax, the stated soy ceiling on both pages. The 15 gm trial reads ≈0 because it is a smelling size, not a full candle.

Single-note floral · the white-wax case
British Rose Fragrance Oil
One of the most completely specified candle-first pages in the range, and the cheaper of the two kilos here at ₹3,068. It states a measured "Flashpoint 192°C", "Vanillin content 0% - no discolouration or yellowing in wax", "Up to 10% for soy wax candles with a cure time of 48-72 hours. Up to 6% for paraffin wax candles with a cure time of 24-48 hours", "Wax Compatibility All Types", and a profile of "Single note - British Rose … Fresh, dewy roses with subtle green and soft floral undertones" at "Moderate to strong". What the page does not do is mention IFRA anywhere — it is one of 36 CSI pages that never uses the word, a reason to ask for documentation rather than to avoid the oil. Its stated structure is "Top Notes Rich vanilla, spice … Middle Notes Deep caramel, cream … Base Notes Dark amber, warm musk", its strength "Strong - impactful at lower loads, deeply rich at higher", its flash point "Flashpoint ~191-193°C" and its load "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours. 6-8% for paraffin wax, cure 24-48 hours". Note how directly the page handles its weakness: "Yes. Dark Vanilla contains vanillin which causes yellowing in white and light-coloured wax. This is normal and expected for vanilla-heavy oils. Why do some fragrance oils work better in candles than others?
Because five things decide the result and only the oil is in the bottle. Note structure sets whether the scent peaks early or builds late; wax type sets the pool temperature and the ceiling; load is capped by what the wax holds in solution; vanillin decides whether white wax stays white; cure decides how much you are smelling when you judge it. Four are printed — 88 of 107 CSI pages publish a full note structure and 62 state a cure window. The fifth, your wick and vessel, needs a burn test.
Does an expensive fragrance oil perform better in a candle?
Not reliably; price is not a spec. Across the oils on this page the spread between cheapest and dearest kilo is ₹4,578, or ₹91.56 per 200 g candle at 10%, and it reflects raw materials and concentration rather than a promised result in your wax. A cheaper oil whose stated structure suits your candle will usually beat a dearer one that does not. Judge cost per candle in your costing sheet, and performance from a jar you cured and burned yourself.
Why does the same oil smell different in soy and in paraffin?
Because the two waxes hold different amounts of oil and run different pool temperatures, and the pages say so. 20 of CSI's 107 oil pages state separate figures and on all 20 paraffin is lower — commonly "Up to 10% for soy wax" against "Up to 6% for paraffin wax". The Semi Refined Paraffin Wax page states a melting point of 80–90°C; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states a pour of 58–60°C. Same oil, different conditions. Re-test whenever you change wax.
Is a strong-smelling bottle a sign of a better candle oil?
No. Smelling a bottle tells you about a concentrate at room temperature, not a melt pool after a fortnight's cure. Some oils that read quietly neat carry beautifully in wax; some that overwhelm from the bottle flatten out. The useful reads are the stated note structure — where the weight sits — and your own scores at 30 minutes and 2 hours on a cured jar. Two CSI pages describe strength as load-dependent, which is the right framing: "impactful at lower loads, deeply rich at higher".
How long should I cure a candle before deciding an oil is weak?
Longer than most people do. 62 of CSI's 107 oil pages state 48–72 hours for soy before burn testing and 22 state 24–48 hours for paraffin, but those are floors. Standard practice for soy containers is 14–21 days, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states minimum 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks. Cure costs nothing; stepping a 100-candle run from 8% to 10% of British Rose costs ₹1,132.80. Try the free change first.
Which fragrance oils will not yellow my white candles?
The ones whose pages state a vanillin figure of zero — and read the wording, because it varies. British Rose states "Vanillin content 0% - no discolouration or yellowing in wax", Verbena "Vanillin Content: 0% (No discoloration risk)", Citrus Lemon "Approximately 0%" while still asking you to test. 45 of 107 pages say nothing — a gap, not a zero. For vanilla, coffee, caramel, tobacco or heavy amber, assume toning and design for it.

An oil that works better is only an oil that was matched better. The matching is free; the guessing is not.
