CSI Seasonal Buying · Monsoon in India
A monsoon candle has to smell of the ground as well as the rain. Here are six CSI oils ranked for June to September, led by the one oil built around petrichor, with what each costs per candle and how to cure in humid weather.

Quick answers — read this first
What are the best fragrance oils for monsoon candles in India? Oils that smell of rain: wet earth, green leaves, roots, damp wood and night flowers. Our ranking of CSI oils for the monsoon, roughly June to September: 1 Gilli Mitti (Patchouli), 2 Vetiver, 3 Eucalyptus Spearmint, 4 Sage and Cedarwood, 5 Raat Ki Rani, 6 Palo Santo.

Is there a petrichor or "gilli mitti" fragrance oil for candles? Yes. CSI's Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) page describes "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk" and says it "evokes petrichor - the scent of rain on dry earth". It is the signature monsoon oil and, at ₹8.96 per gram, the dearest of the six per gram at every size from 50 g up.

Does humidity affect soy candles? It affects how they look and cure more than how they smell in our experience. Cure in a closed box or cupboard, compare day 7 with day 14, and expect cosmetic frosting and glass-adhesion marks to be more visible in wet months.

What about Citronella? It is a fragrance oil and we sell it as a scent. We make no claims about insects, and neither should your label.
The short answer
The monsoon signature: petrichor, the smell of rain on dry earth. Gilli Mitti is the only CSI oil whose page names it.
The supporting cast: Vetiver (roots, smoke, green), Eucalyptus Spearmint (the cool first shower), Sage and Cedarwood (wet garden), Raat Ki Rani (the night flower), Palo Santo (the rainy evening indoors).
The humidity rule: cure longer and closed, judge at day 7 and day 14, and keep labels and wick stickers dry.
The price reality: the signature oil is the expensive one. Gilli Mitti is 2.1 times Eucalyptus Spearmint per gram at 50 g, and it is priced flat from 50 g to 1 kg.
The monsoon scent map: air, ground, day, night Six ranked CSI oils placed by the notes on their product pages. Number = rank in this guide. NIGHT AIR · floral, ozone RAINY EVENING · resin, smoke FIRST SHOWER · green, cool WET GARDEN · herbs, wood, soil 3 Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹4.25/g at 50 g 5 Raat Ki Rani ₹7.40/g at 50 g 4 Sage and Cedarwood ₹7.08/g at 50 g 1 Gilli Mitti ₹8.96/g at 50 g 2 Vetiver ₹7.08/g at 50 g 6 Palo Santo ₹6.02/g at 50 g ← RAIN IN THE AIR · fresh, green, ozone RAIN ON THE GROUND · earth, roots, wood → Shaded half = the earthy side where the monsoon signature lives. Placement is editorial judgement from stated notes. CSI live pricing, verified 24 September 2026.
The monsoon has two halves: rain in the air (cool, green, ozone) and rain on the ground (soil, roots, wood). The six ranked oils sit across both. Gilli Mitti and Vetiver hold the earthy side that makes a candle read "monsoon" rather than "fresh"; Eucalyptus Spearmint and Raat Ki Rani supply the air.
Straight answer
Which CSI fragrance oils make the best monsoon candles, and why?
Lead with Gilli Mitti (Patchouli): it is the one oil in the catalogue built around petrichor, its page states "The recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles", and it is in stock at every size on 24 September 2026. Support it with Vetiver Fragrance Oil for depth (smoky, woody, grounding, with subtle green) and Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil for the cool, fresh side of rain. For a wider line, add Sage and Cedarwood (the wet garden), Raat Ki Rani (the flower that scents monsoon nights) and Palo Santo (the rainy evening indoors). All six pages state a candle load of up to 10%. The ranking is based on how directly the stated notes express the monsoon, stated load, per-gram price, stock depth and base weight; CSI has no throw measurements and we have not invented any. The priced monsoon basket and order dates are in Buy Monsoon-Inspired Candle Fragrance Oils.
One line: a monsoon candle smells of the ground as well as the rain, so buy one earthy oil first and let the fresh ones support it.
Start with the signature. Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) 50 g is ₹448.00 (₹8.96 per gram), enough for four 150 g candles at 8%. The page describes it as an "IFRA-certified fragrance oil"; that is the page's wording, and documents are available on request.

The monsoon scent vocabulary

Nobody asks for "a geosmin-forward earthy accord". They ask for the smell of the first rain.

The southwest monsoon reaches most of India roughly between June and September. For a candle maker it is the one season with its own smell that every Indian customer already knows: the first shower on hot, dry ground. Before you choose oils, get the vocabulary straight, because it decides how you name and describe the candle as much as what goes in it.

Monsoon scent words · what they mean in a candle
Six words your customers use, and the CSI oil that answers each
Word What people mean Candle language CSI oil
Petrichor The smell of rain on dry earth earthy, mineral, damp, fresh Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) — the only page that names it
Gilli mitti / sondhi mitti Wet soil, the Hindi phrase many buyers search for soil, clay, rain, patchouli Gilli Mitti (Patchouli)
Khus / vetiver Roots, cool shade, the grass mats of old summers and wet verandahs smoky, rooty, green, dry-woody Vetiver Fragrance Oil
Hariyali / green Leaves after rain, fresh shoots green, herbal, cool, minty Eucalyptus Spearmint, Sage and Cedarwood
Raat ki rani The night-blooming flower of humid evenings white floral, green stems, ozone Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine)
Barish wali shaam A rainy evening indoors: incense, warm wood, tea resin, incense, soft amber Palo Santo; Roasted Coffee for the café version

Two practical notes. First, a monsoon candle that is all fresh and green reads as "spa" or "summer"; the earthy note is what makes it monsoon. That is why Gilli Mitti ranks first even though it is the dearest oil here. Second, fragrance oils are not essential oils. "Vetiver" and "Palo Santo" on these pages describe the scent, not the plant material in the bottle, so describe your candle as vetiver-scented, not as containing vetiver.

Mistake: naming a monsoon candle "Mitti Attar" or implying it contains earth or attar. Fix: it is a fragrance oil built to evoke petrichor. Name the mood (First Rain, Wet Earth, Verandah) and describe the scent honestly.

The ranking: six CSI monsoon oils

Ranked by how clearly each page says "rain", then by what it costs to say it.

The basis, in order: how directly the stated notes express the monsoon, whether a candle load is stated, price per gram at 50 g, stock at every listed size on 24 September 2026, and base weight. We have no throw measurements and do not rank on strength. Candle counts assume a 150 g candle at 8% (12 g of oil).

1
earthy petrichor · the monsoon signature · rank 1
Gilli Mitti (Patchouli)
The only CSI oil written around the monsoon itself. The page describes "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk. Evokes petrichor - the scent of rain on dry earth", states "The recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles", and calls it "IFRA-certified" (page wording; ask for the documents). A customer review on the page calls the Gilli Mitti scent "amazing and authentic". Limitation: it is the dearest of the six, and it is priced flat at ₹8.96 per gram from 50 g to 1 kg, so bulk buys no saving at all. Patchouli also divides people; test it on someone who is not you.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹140.00 ₹9.33 1
50 g ₹448.00 ₹8.96 4
100 g ₹896.00 ₹8.96 8

1 kg ₹8,960.00 ₹8.96 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹107.52 at any size from 50 g to 1 kg. Buy Gilli Mitti
2
rooty woody · depth and smoke · rank 2
Vetiver Fragrance Oil
Vetiver is the root note under an Indian monsoon: the page describes it as "smoky, woody, and grounding with subtle green and sweet undertones" and states "Up to 10% for soy wax candles ... Up to 6% for paraffin wax candles". It gives a monsoon line a darker, more grown-up candle than Gilli Mitti, and it is cheaper per gram than Gilli Mitti at every size from 50 g up (its 15 g is dearer). Limitation: the 1 kg is out of stock on 24 September 2026 (ask on WhatsApp for a restock date), and the 15 g is 77% dearer per gram than the 50 g, so skip it.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹187.62 ₹12.51 1
50 g ₹354.00 ₹7.08 4
100 g ₹600.00 ₹6.00 8

Oil per 8% candle: ₹84.96 at 50 g, ₹69.60 at 500 g (18.1% less per gram). Buy Vetiver
3
green and cool · the first shower · rank 3
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
The fresh half of the monsoon at the lowest price in the ranking. The page says it combines "crisp eucalyptus with cool spearmint", states "Recommended fragrance load up to 10% for soy wax, up to 6% for paraffin" and describes it as "IFRA-certified" (page wording). On its own it reads cool and green rather than rainy; next to Gilli Mitti or Vetiver it becomes the rain in the air. Limitation: in a small room at 10% it can read medicinal; test 6% first. Its 1 kg is 27.8% cheaper per gram than its 50 g, the deepest bulk saving among the six.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹68.44 ₹4.56 1
50 g ₹212.40 ₹4.25 4
100 g ₹354.00 ₹3.54 8
500 g ₹1,652.00 ₹3.30 41
1 kg ₹3,068.00 ₹3.07 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹50.98 at 50 g, ₹36.82 at 1 kg. Buy Eucalyptus Spearmint
4
herbal woody · the wet garden · rank 4
Sage and Cedarwood Fragrance Oil
Sage and cedar is what a garden smells like after rain: the page describes "Herbaceous sage with warm, woody cedar undertones" and states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax". In our judgement it is the most unisex oil on the list and, with Palo Santo, one of the two most likely to carry into winter. Limitation: there is no 15 g size, and the 1 kg (₹6,867.60, ₹6.87/g) costs 33% more per gram than the 500 g (₹2,584.20, ₹5.17/g). Two 500 g packs cost ₹5,168.40, ₹1,699.20 less than one 1 kg; ask on WhatsApp before ordering a kilogram.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
50 g ₹354.00 ₹7.08 4
100 g ₹696.20 ₹6.96 8
500 g ₹2,584.20 ₹5.17 41
1 kg ₹6,867.60 ₹6.87 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹84.96 at 50 g, ₹62.02 at 500 g, ₹82.41 at 1 kg. Buy Sage and Cedarwood
5
night floral · the monsoon night · rank 5
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil
Raat ki rani is the flower of warm, humid nights, and its page supplies the rain as well: "Top Notes: Green Stems, Fresh Ozone | Middle Notes: Night-Blooming Jasmine, White Florals | Base Notes: Soft Amber, Musk", with "Recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles". It is the monsoon line's floral, and the Indian name sells itself. Limitation: white florals are heady; in our judgement it suits an evening or bedroom candle, not the whole line. It is also one of the dearer oils per gram at 50 g (₹7.40); the 500 g is 8.5% cheaper per gram.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.67 1
50 g ₹370.00 ₹7.40 4
100 g ₹700.00 ₹7.00 8
500 g ₹3,387.00 ₹6.77 41
1 kg ₹6,774.00 ₹6.77 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹88.80 at 50 g, ₹81.29 at 500 g. Buy Raat Ki Rani
6
resinous · the rainy evening indoors · rank 6
Palo Santo Fragrance Oil
The monsoon also happens indoors: windows shut, a lamp on, incense lit. Palo Santo's page describes "Earthy palo santo with soft citrus, warm amber, and a touch of incense" and states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax". It bridges monsoon and winter. Limitation: it ranks last because its notes say "evening" more than "rain"; it is a supporting scent, not a signature. It is priced flat at ₹6.02 per gram from 50 g to 1 kg, so buy only what you need.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%
15 g ₹106.20 ₹7.08 1
50 g ₹300.90 ₹6.02 4
100 g ₹601.80 ₹6.02 8
500 g ₹3,009.00 ₹6.02 41
1 kg ₹6,018.00 ₹6.02 83
Oil per 8% candle: ₹72.22 at every size from 50 g. Buy Palo Santo

What the six cost, and two size traps

A monsoon line is more expensive per candle than a summer line, because the signature notes (earth, roots, resin) sit in dearer oils. The table puts the six side by side at 8% in a 150 g candle. Per-gram ladders for every seasonal oil are in Wholesale Seasonal Candle Fragrance Oils in India.

6 Palo Santo ₹72.22 ₹72.22 ₹72.22 Flat from 50 g: no bulk saving

Trap 1: the 1 kg that costs more

Sage and Cedarwood's 1 kg is dearer per gram than its 500 g on 24 September 2026. That is a stated price fact, not a guess about why. In candle terms it is ₹62.02 of oil per candle at the 500 g price against ₹82.41 at the 1 kg. Buy two 500 g packs, or ask us first.

Trap 2: the bulk saving that does not exist

Gilli Mitti and Palo Santo cost the same per gram at 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg. There is no reason to buy either in bulk until a candle has sold through. We sell the 1 kg of Gilli Mitti. For a first monsoon, don't buy it; a 500 g bottle makes 41 candles at 8% for exactly the same per-gram price.

Stretching the signature oil
Gilli Mitti costs ₹56.54 more oil per candle than Eucalyptus Spearmint at 50 g. A worked example many makers try: half and half in one candle, 6 g of each at 8% total. That is ₹53.76 + ₹25.49 = ₹79.25 of oil, against ₹107.52 for Gilli Mitti alone. Whether the blend still reads as petrichor is a burn-test question; the stated notes suggest the earthy base will carry. Blending changes the scent, so test it as a new candle, not as a cheaper version of the old one.

For scale: a worked-example Gilli Mitti candle at 8% in a 150 g clear jar with golden lid (₹94.40 per jar from the pack of 10), with 138 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹70.02) and a C1 wick (₹5.90), costs ₹277.84 in materials. The Eucalyptus Spearmint version is ₹221.30. Both exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Humidity and cure: the monsoon bench

In the monsoon, the weather is in the workshop with you.

Monsoon humidity does not change what is in the bottle, but it changes your bench, your cure and the way a finished soy candle looks. What follows is practical judgement from common practice, not measured data: CSI has no humidity test results for these oils or waxes.

What humidity tends to show

Surface and glass. Frosting (a white, crystalline bloom on soy) and wet spots (patches where wax has pulled from the glass) are cosmetic, and in our experience easier to trigger when a room is damp and the temperature swings between day and night. They do not change the scent. Labels and stickers. Paper labels curl and wick stickers lose grip on damp glass; make sure jars are dry and at room temperature before wicking. Oil bottles. Keep caps tight and bottles in a closed cupboard, away from a damp wall.

Cure: longer, closed, compared

None of the six ranked pages states a cure time. At least 48–72 hours, and longer for soy, is common practice; we suggest judging monsoon candles at day 7 and again at day 14, because earthy and woody bases are the notes that most often need time to settle. Cure with lids on after the candle has fully set, in a closed box or cupboard, not on an open shelf by a window.

1
Dry the jarsWipe and air every jar before wicking. Damp glass is the most common reason a wick sticker fails in July.
2
Pour at the wax page temperature, every timeLuxury Soy Wax CSI 464's page gives melt/pour at 80–90°C; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468's page gives a pour of 58–60°C. Keep it identical across a test set.
3
Let the candles set undisturbed, away from fans and open windowsA cold, damp draught across a setting soy candle is an easy way to get an uneven top in the monsoon.
4
Lid on, into a closed boxOnce fully set, cap the jars and cure them in a closed box or cupboard. Note the date on the base.
5
Cold sniff at day 7 and day 14Score each candle for "rain" (does it read monsoon?) and for "earth" (is the ground there?). Earthy bases in particular may change between the two dates.
6
Burn with the windows as your customer has themIn the monsoon many rooms are closed against the rain. Test the burn in a closed room for two to three hours and note the doorway scent at 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours.
Mistake: judging a monsoon candle at day 3 and rejecting Gilli Mitti or Vetiver as "flat". Fix: earthy and rooty bases are the slowest part of a candle to settle in our experience. Compare the day-7 and day-14 candles before you decide. Buying three bottles to test cure lengths (₹1,344.00) is unnecessary: pour three candles from one 50 g bottle and burn them on different days.
Loads and ceilings in the monsoon
All six ranked oils state a candle maximum of 10%, which matches CSI 464's stated ceiling; CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks allow up to 13%, but the oil pages stop at 10%, and the lower ceiling governs. Test 6%, 8% and 10%, and keep the lowest load that passes. A closed monsoon room is small; more oil is rarely the answer. How soy handles these families more generally is in Premium Hotel Fragrance Oils for Soy Candles.

Building a three-scent monsoon line

Most small brands launch a season with three candles. The ranked six combine into three different three-scent lines depending on who you sell to. This is editorial judgement from the stated notes; how many candles of each to make belongs to Bulk Seasonal Fragrance Oils for Candle Manufacturers, and which oils to keep as core across seasons to Which Fragrance Oils Should a Candle Brand Stock for Summer, Monsoon and Winter?.

Three monsoon lines · from the ranked six
Pick the line that matches your buyer
Line Signature Fresh Evening Oil at 50 g for the set Who it suits
First Rain (classic) Gilli Mitti Eucalyptus Spearmint Raat Ki Rani ₹1,030.40 Gift shops, first-time monsoon buyers
Verandah (earthy, unisex) Vetiver Sage and Cedarwood Palo Santo ₹1,008.90 Home décor stores, men's gifting, cafés
Petrichor (budget) Gilli Mitti Eucalyptus Spearmint Palo Santo ₹961.30 Makers who want the signature with the two cheapest supporting oils of the six at 50 g; the lowest-cost of the three lines

Each line keeps at least one oil from the earthy half of the map. A line of three fresh oils is a summer line with a monsoon label. Verandah is the one line with all three oils on the earthy half; in our judgement that suits evening and men's-gifting buyers, but it is heavy for a first-time buyer in a humid July, where First Rain or Petrichor is the safer start. The winter end of this palette (Palo Santo, Sage and Cedarwood, Vetiver) carries forward into Best Fragrance Oils for Winter Candles in India.

Citronella, coffee and the other rainy-season oils

Several oils have a monsoon story. Not all of them belong at the top of a ranking.
Other rainy-season oils · stock and price on 24 September 2026
Why each is not in the ranked six
Oil Monsoon case Why not ranked Stock / price fact
Citronella Fragrance Oil Lemon, lemongrass, citronella and green herb over wood A familiar rainy-season scent, but it says "garden" more than "rain". We sell it as a fragrance only and make no claims about insects; do not make any on your label In stock. The 100 g is ₹7.67/g and the 1 kg ₹2.89/g: the 100 g costs 165% more per gram. Per 8% candle: ₹92.04 at 100 g, ₹34.69 at 1 kg
Roasted Coffee Fragrance Coffee bean, espresso, vanilla-caramel base: the rainy-day hot drink Gourmand, not rain; better as a café scent In stock; ₹4.60/g at 50 g, ₹3.74/g at 1 kg. Page states "candles (6-10%)"
Verbena Fragrance Oil Crisp lemony verbena with herbal undertones Fresh and green, but summer as much as monsoon In stock; ₹6.61/g at 50 g, ₹4.72/g at 1 kg
Lemongrass and Lime Lime and lemongrass over cedarwood and soft musk Ranked in the summer guide; carries into early monsoon In stock; ₹6.60/g at 50 g
Cucumber Green Tea Cucumber and green tea over clean musk Fresh rather than rainy; a carry-over from summer In stock; ₹3.53/g at 50 g
Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil Sea salt and ozone over driftwood and musk Reads coast and holiday, not rain, in our judgement In stock; ₹4.94/g at 50 g, fractionally dearer per gram at 1 kg
Jasmine Fragrance Oil Sweet, floral, slightly musky A cheaper white floral than Raat Ki Rani, but without the green-ozone opening In stock; ₹4.60/g at 50 g, ₹3.92/g at 1 kg

Two gaps to be honest about. CSI does not list an oil called "rain", "petrichor" or "wet earth" apart from Gilli Mitti, and there is no mogra or rajnigandha available: Mogra and Rajnigandha (Tuberose) are out of stock on 24 September 2026. If a specific monsoon flower is central to your range, ask on WhatsApp rather than buying around it. Where Citronella, coffee and the fresh carry-overs fit into a priced monsoon order is covered in Buy Monsoon-Inspired Candle Fragrance Oils.

Monsoon 2027 runs roughly June to September. Test Gilli Mitti and Vetiver alongside your summer range in early 2027, and confirm 500 g stock before May. Vetiver's 1 kg is out of stock on 24 September 2026, so plan on 500 g.

The CSI principle
Rain needs ground.
A monsoon candle that is only fresh smells of summer. Put one earthy or rooty oil at the centre of the line, even though it is the dearest, and let the cheaper fresh oils build around it.
"Everyone in India knows the smell of the first rain. Your job is not to explain it, only to not get it wrong."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every oil named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page ranks our dearest monsoon oil first because its notes earn it, then tells you not to buy it in bulk because the price does not fall, and flags a 1 kg size that costs more per gram than its 500 g.

Every price, pack size and per-gram figure was taken from CSI's live store and verified on 24 September 2026. Out-of-stock sizes (Vetiver 1 kg) and out-of-stock oils (Mogra, Rajnigandha) are flagged as such on that date and never presented as buyable. Candle loads, notes and IFRA wording are quoted from each product page.

The ranking, the scent vocabulary, the scent map, the humidity and cure advice, and the three lines are our judgement; CSI has no throw or humidity measurements for these oils. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Which fragrance oil smells like rain on soil for candles?
At CSI, Gilli Mitti (Patchouli). Its page describes "fresh rain, soft soil, natural patchouli, damp woods, and light musk" and says it evokes petrichor. It is ₹448.00 for 50 g and states a candle load of 6-10%.
What are the best monsoon candle scents in India?
Earthy and green scents: petrichor, vetiver, eucalyptus and mint, sage and cedar, night-blooming jasmine and soft incense. Our ranked CSI six are Gilli Mitti, Vetiver, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Sage and Cedarwood, Raat Ki Rani and Palo Santo.
Does humidity affect soy candle curing?
In our experience it mostly affects appearance: frosting and wet spots are easier to trigger in damp, changeable weather, and labels and wick stickers grip less well on damp glass. Cure lidded in a closed box and compare candles at day 7 and day 14.

As a scent, yes: lemony, grassy and green, and many buyers associate it with the rainy season. CSI sells Citronella as a fragrance and makes no claims about insects; describe your candle by its scent (lemon, lemongrass, green herb, wood) and keep insect-related claims off the label.

Non-price figures: candle maths assume a 150 g candle with load as a percentage of total weight (8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax); candle counts are floor(grams ÷ 12). Wax ceilings (CSI 464 up to 10%, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%) and pour temperatures are as stated on the wax pages and are formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Per-candle costs and the blend are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. The southwest monsoon (roughly June–September) is an approximate calendar fact, not a forecast. The ranking, vocabulary, scent map, humidity and cure advice and three-scent lines are editorial judgement.
