Commercial Fragrance · Votive Hub
A votive sits between a tealight and a jar: four to seven grams of oil, a pool wide enough to let a base note show, and a burn long enough to fill a small room. Unlike tealights, CSI lists containers that suit it — a 50 g Velvet heart jar, an 85 g golden tin, black votive glass and mini jars — so this page pairs oils to real vessels.
4.00 g
fragrance oil in a 50 g votive at 8% — the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's published capacity · 6.80 g in the 85 g golden tin · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oils are best for votive candles? There is no measured ranking — we have not published throw data. Eight worth testing first, paired to CSI's containers: Japanese Cherry Blossom, Love Spell, Bergamot Amber, Woody Oud, Raat Ki Rani, Dark Vanilla Oud, Gardenia and Neroli. See the shortlist.

How much fragrance oil goes in a votive? At 8%: 4.00 g in a 50 g votive, 5.60 g in a 70 g and 6.80 g in the 85 g golden tin. How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Tealight Candles? covers the same maths for tealights.

What containers does CSI list for votives? Votive Glass Jars – Black (₹35.40 each, ₹318.60 for 10), Mini Glass Jars (from ₹129.80 for 5), the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g capacity, ₹45.00) and the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g fill, 12 for ₹360.00). Tealight cups are not listed.

What does a scented votive cost to make? A 50 g Velvet heart votive with Japanese Cherry Blossom: ₹98.45 for oil, wax, wick and jar. See four votives costed.
The short answer
Shortlist: Soft and fruity florals for the Velvet heart jar; citrus-amber and woods for the golden tin; night florals and dark gourmands for black votive glass; white and citrus florals for mini jars.
Oil per votive: 8% of total weight: 50 g → 4.00 g · 70 g → 5.60 g · 85 g tin → 6.80 g. Ceilings: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%.
Containers: Black votive glass ₹31.86 each by 10 · mini jars ₹21.24 each by 100 · Velvet heart jar ₹45.00 · golden tin ₹30.00 each by 12. Fill weight published only for the Velvet jar (50 g) and tin (85 g).

Tealight cups are not listed by CSI; the velvet jar and tin are, with published fills.
Heights are to scale by fill weight; the dark band is the 8% of each candle that is fragrance oil. The step from a 12 g tealight to a 50 g votive is more than fourfold in oil, and that is why the choice of scent opens up: a votive has enough fuel and pool for a base note to arrive. Only the Velvet jar's 50 g and the tin's 85 g are published fills; the 50 g and 70 g votives are illustrative.
Straight answer
What are the best fragrance oils for votive candles?
Start from the container, because a votive's job is set by its vessel. CSI lists four that suit votives: the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (published 50 g wax capacity, ₹45.00), the Golden Aluminium Tin (published 85 g fill, 12 for ₹360.00), Votive Glass Jars – Black and Mini Glass Jars. At 8%, a 50 g votive holds 4.00 g of oil and the tin 6.80 g. That is enough fuel for a base note to show, which a tealight rarely allows, so the shortlist is wider: soft or fruity florals such as Japanese Cherry Blossom and Love Spell for the red heart jar, Bergamot Amber and Woody Oud for the golden tin, Raat Ki Rani and Dark Vanilla Oud for black glass, and Gardenia or Neroli for mini jars. We have not published throw measurements, so these are reasoned first tests, not a ranking. A 15 g tester scents 3.75 50 g votives at 8%, so the 50 g size is the practical tester here.
One line: pick the container first, then two oils that suit its occasion — and test them in that container.
A Velvet heart votive test: Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 5 for ₹225.00, Japanese Cherry Blossom 50 g for ₹270.00 and Love Spell 50 g for ₹249.00. Each 50 g of oil scents 12.5 votives at 50 g and 8%.

A votive is not a big tealight

Four times the wax is not four times the tealight. It is a different candle, with room for a different kind of scent.

In general candle-making practice, a tealight gives a fragrance a small pool and a short burn, so bright top notes do best. A votive — here, a 50 to 85 g candle in a small jar or tin — changes both. The pool is wider, so more scented wax is exposed at once. The burn is longer, often a few evenings rather than one, so the fragrance has time to move from its top notes into its heart and base. And the container matters more: a votive is often a gift in its own right, so the vessel sets the occasion before anyone lights it.

That is why the votive shortlist is wider than the tealight one in best fragrance oils for scented tealights. Ambers, woods and night florals, which may not have time to show in a 12 g tealight, have a fair chance in 50 g. It is still reasoning from how small candles burn, not a measured result on CSI's oils, and which fragrances work best in small candles sets the argument out family by family. The practical rule is the same as for any candle: test the oil in the container you will sell it in.

One contrast with tealights is worth stating plainly. For tealights, CSI's catalogue on 24 September 2026 had no tealight cups and no tealight wicks. For votives, it has four suitable containers, two with published fills. That makes votives the easier small format to build entirely from one order, and buying oils for votive making prices the full bill for each.

Eight oils, paired to real containers

The eight oils below are paired to the container and occasion they most naturally suit. Every one has at least a 50 g in stock, and all but Love Spell have a 15 g tester. The pairings are reasoning — colour, vessel and occasion — not sales data, and the last column says why each oil is here.

Oil per votive at 8%, at the 100 g rate · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Eight votive oils and the container each suits
Oil Family Container · occasion Oil in 50 g Oil in 70 g Why it is worth testing
Japanese Cherry Blossom Soft floral Velvet heart jar · gifts ₹20.00 ₹28.00 Near the top of the best-selling sort; gentle enough for a small room
Love Spell Fruity floral Velvet heart jar · Valentine's, favours ₹17.96 ₹25.14 A sweet profile that suits a red heart jar; starts at 50 g
Bergamot Amber Citrus-amber Golden tin · travel, festive ₹22.40 ₹31.36 Bright top over a warm base — the base has time to show in a 50–85 g candle
Woody Oud Woody Golden tin · men's gifts, festive ₹18.12 ₹25.37 Near the top of the sort; a darker profile at a mid-range ₹4.53 a gram
Raat Ki Rani Indian night floral Black votive glass · evenings ₹28.00 ₹39.20 A named Indian floral for an evening candle; premium per gram
Dark Vanilla Oud Gourmand-woody Black votive glass · evenings ₹23.60 ₹33.04 Vanilla and oud for a dark jar; test against Woody Oud
Gardenia White floral Mini glass jars · wedding favours ₹17.32 ₹24.25 A white floral at ₹4.33 a gram; flat from 100 g to 1 kg
Neroli Citrus floral Mini glass jars · spa gift sets ₹26.62 ₹37.27 Orange-blossom freshness for a set of small jars

Two patterns stand out. First, fragrance is now a real share of the candle's cost: from ₹17.32 to ₹28.00 in a 50 g votive, against about ₹3 to ₹8 in a tealight. That is still modest next to the jar — the Velvet heart jar alone is ₹45.00 — but it is enough that the choice between Gardenia and Raat Ki Rani is visible in your margin. Second, the pairings run in twos on purpose. If Japanese Cherry Blossom and Love Spell both fail in the Velvet jar, the problem is probably the wick or the fill, not the family.

The heart jar has a colour
The Heart Cutout Velvet Jar in stock is red (the white version was out of stock on the pull date). A red heart reads as romance and gifting before anyone smells it, so a sweet floral or fruity floral matches the promise; a smoky oud may confuse it. Choose the scent to agree with the jar.
Pairing by bottle, not by vessel. Choosing a favourite oil first and then finding a jar for it is how a Dark Vanilla Oud ends up in a red velvet heart. Start from the container you can source and the occasion it signals, pick two oils that suit it, and test both in that container. The container is the first thing the customer sees; the scent should confirm it.

Grams of oil per votive

Load in this series is a percentage of the total finished weight. The table gives grams for the two illustrative votive fills (50 g and 70 g) and for the two containers whose fills CSI publishes, with a 12 g tealight for comparison. The 13% column applies only to Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, rated up to 13%; CSI 464 is rated up to 10%. For other waxes, no ceiling is in our data — ask on WhatsApp and test within 6–10%.

Load = % of total finished weight · 13% only in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks
Oil per candle, tealight to tin
Candle Fill 6% 8% 10% 13%
Illustrative tealight 12 g 0.72 g 0.96 g 1.20 g 1.56 g
Illustrative votive 50 g 3.00 g 4.00 g 5.00 g 6.50 g
Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (published 50 g capacity) 50 g 3.00 g 4.00 g 5.00 g 6.50 g
Illustrative votive 70 g 4.20 g 5.60 g 7.00 g 9.10 g
Golden Aluminium Tin (published 85 g fill) 85 g 5.10 g 6.80 g 8.50 g 11.05 g

We treat the Velvet jar's published "50 g wax capacity" as the finished fill of 50 g, and the tin's "85 g fill weight" as 85 g finished. If your pour line sits lower, weigh a filled jar and redo the sum. The Votive Glass Jars – Black and Mini Glass Jars have no published fill, so the 50 g and 70 g rows are placeholders until you weigh one. Wick sizing is also not published: Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹5.90 each) are a reasonable first wick to burn-test in a small jar, but only a test in your jar tells you whether the pool reaches the edge.

Four votives, costed

Once the container is listed, the whole candle can be priced. That is the difference between a votive plan and a tealight plan.

Here is one votive per CSI container, each with an oil from its pairing, poured in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, with one Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90. Oil is priced at its 100 g rate; jars at the best listed per-piece price. The mini jar and black votive glass use illustrative fills.

8% load · oil at 100 g rate · wax ₹599.00 / kg · wick ₹5.90 · labour, packaging, freight and GST excluded
Material cost of one votive per container
Container (fill) Oil Oil cost Wax cost Wick Jar Material cost
Velvet heart jar (50 g, published) Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹20.00 ₹27.55 ₹5.90 ₹45.00 ₹98.45
Golden tin (85 g, published) Bergamot Amber ₹38.08 ₹46.84 ₹5.90 ₹30.00 ₹120.82
Black votive glass (70 g, illustrative) Raat Ki Rani ₹39.20 ₹38.58 ₹5.90 ₹31.86 ₹115.54
Mini glass jar, black (50 g, illustrative) Gardenia ₹17.32 ₹27.55 ₹5.90 ₹21.24 ₹72.01

The range runs from ₹72.01 to ₹115.54 a votive, and the jar is usually the largest single line. That changes where to spend. In a tealight, the oil is small money and the cup is unpriced; in a votive, a premium oil adds a few rupees to a candle whose jar costs ₹21 to ₹45, so a better oil is easier to justify. Buy Fragrance Oils for Votive Candle Making takes each container through a full shopping list for 10, 50 and 100 votives.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The 15 g tester is our cheapest way into an oil, but for votives it is thin: it scents 3.75 50 g votives at 8%, which is not a fair test in two loads. Buy the 50 g of each oil you are testing instead. It costs more up front, it scents 12.5 votives, and for most oils it is already priced at or near the 100 g rate — Japanese Cherry Blossom is ₹5.40 a gram at 50 g and ₹5.00 at 100 g.

Choosing your votive range

1
Choose one or two containersPick from the four CSI lists by occasion: Velvet heart for gifting, golden tin for travel and festive, black glass for evenings, mini jars for sets and favours. Order a pack of each to test.
2
Weigh a filled jarFor the black votive glass and mini jars, fill one to your pour line and weigh it. The Velvet jar (50 g) and tin (85 g) publish their fills; check yours matches.
3
Buy two oils per container, 50 g eachFrom the pairing table. 50 g scents 12.5 votives at 50 g and 8% — enough for a two-load test.
4
Pour at 8% and 10%Four votives per load per oil. Use one wax — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (13% ceiling) or CSI 464 (10%) — and one wick, burn-tested first.
5
Cure, then burn over two eveningsA votive's strength shows over its full burn. Score after 30 minutes and again on the second evening, when the pool is established.
6
Cost the winner and scaleTake the winner's line from the costed table, check your price carries it, and move the oil to 100 g or more.
The CSI principle
Container first, occasion second, oil third.
A votive is bought for its vessel and lit for its scent. Choose oils that agree with the jar, and test them in that jar — nowhere else.

Pairing is a starting point; the burn decides. The tealight throw test adapts directly to votives — swap five 12 g tealights for four 50 g votives per arm. For larger votive runs, Bulk Fragrance Oils for Scented Tealight Production shows how to turn per-piece grams into pack orders, and for festive gift boxes, fragrance oils for Diwali gift candle production covers the season's scents.

Three oils from the shortlist, with every size, for the three containers most makers start with.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page pairs our oils to our containers, and it says where the pairing is reasoning rather than data, where a fill weight is illustrative rather than published, and that the 15 g tester is a poor fit for votive testing even though it is our cheapest size.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026; container prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026, and the Eco Candle Wicks price was verified on 10 September 2026 and reconfirmed in the 25 September pull. Per-votive figures are arithmetic on those prices. We have no measured throw data for any oil.

The 50 g and 70 g votive fills are illustrative; the Velvet jar's 50 g capacity and the tin's 85 g fill are as published on their product pages. Wick sizing is not published — burn-test. For pairing help, quotes, GST invoicing or IFRA certificates, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oil is best for votive candles?
There is no measured best. Test two oils that suit your container's occasion: Japanese Cherry Blossom or Love Spell for a red heart jar, Bergamot Amber or Woody Oud for a golden tin, Raat Ki Rani or Dark Vanilla Oud for black glass, Gardenia or Neroli for mini jars.
How much fragrance oil do I put in a votive candle?
At 8% of total weight: 4.00 g in a 50 g votive, 5.60 g in a 70 g, 6.80 g in an 85 g tin. Stay inside the wax's ceiling: 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464.
What size is a votive candle?
There is no fixed size. On CSI's listed containers, the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar has a published 50 g wax capacity and the Golden Aluminium Tin an 85 g fill. The black votive glass and mini jars have no published fill — weigh one filled to your pour line.
Where can I buy votive jars in India?
CSI lists Votive Glass Jars – Black (₹35.40 each, ₹318.60 for 10), Mini Glass Jars (from ₹129.80 for 5 to ₹2,124.00 for 100), the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (₹45.00 each) and the Golden Aluminium Tin (12 for ₹360.00). The orange votive glass was out of stock on the pull date.
Do votive candles need a different fragrance from tealights?
Not a different oil, but often a wider choice. A votive's larger pool and longer burn commonly give base notes such as amber, oud and vanilla time to show, where a tealight favours bright top notes. That is general practice — test in your container.
What does it cost to make a scented votive?
Oil, wax, wick and jar for one votive at 8%: ₹72.01 in a black mini jar with Gardenia (50 g), ₹98.45 in the Velvet heart jar with Japanese Cherry Blossom, ₹120.82 in the golden tin with Bergamot Amber. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra.
