Candle Fragrance Oil Buying Guide for Indian Candle Makers
Share
How much does fragrance oil add to one candle? At the series unit — 200 g of wax, 8% load, 16 g of oil at 1 kg pricing — Citrus Lemon adds ₹45.31, British Rose ₹49.09 and Lavender ₹83.54. With CSI 464 wax at ₹101.48 and an Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90, a British Rose candle is ₹156.47 in materials.
Is buying 1 kg of fragrance oil cheaper? Per gram, almost always. British Rose falls from ₹6.29/g at 15 gm to ₹3.07/g at 1 kg, a 51% drop. Per decision it is the most expensive thing on the page: a kilogram is 62 candles at 8% of a 200 g fill.
How much fragrance oil can I use in soy wax? Whichever is lower — the wax page ceiling or the oil page range. CSI 464 states up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 state up to 13%. An oil page saying 6–10% caps you at 10% in any of them. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a ceiling — ask on WhatsApp.
You are buying grams, not bottles
A fragrance oil listing looks like a product with five prices. It is not. It is one material sold at five different rates, and the rate is what decides your cost per candle. British Rose Fragrance Oil is ₹94.40 for 15 gm and ₹3,068.00 for 1 kg — but read that as ₹6.29 a gram against ₹3.07 a gram and the decision changes shape. That is 51% less for exactly the same liquid.
Everything on this page works from one costing unit, so the numbers stay comparable: 200 g of wax and the oil that goes with it at the load under discussion, using Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 per kilogram, with an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 added when a whole candle is being priced. At 8% of wax weight that is 16 g of oil per candle. Change the jar and you change the wax weight, but the arithmetic — grams of oil = grams of wax × load — never changes.
The consequence is easy to miss on a single order and impossible to miss on a season. Fifty 200 g candles at 8% need 800 g of oil. Bought at the 1 kg rate, those candles cost ₹7,823.40 in wax, oil and wick; bought at the 15 gm rate they cost ₹10,403.67. Same wax, same wick, same scent — ₹2,580.27 of difference, which is roughly the price of another kilogram of oil.
| Pack | Pack price | Per gram | Oil in one 200 g candle at 8% (16 g) | Against the 1 kg rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 gm | ₹94.40 | ₹6.29 | ₹100.69 | baseline for sampling |
| 50 gm | ₹212.40 | ₹4.25 | ₹67.97 | 33% cheaper per gram than 15 gm |
| 100 gm | ₹342.20 | ₹3.42 | ₹54.75 | 46% cheaper per gram than 15 gm |
| 500 gm | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19 | ₹50.98 | within 3.7% of the 1 kg rate |
| 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.07 | ₹49.09 | the floor — 51% below 15 gm |
Two things stand out. The steep part of the ladder is early: most of the saving is already banked by 100 gm, which is 46% below the 15 gm rate. And the last step is small — on British Rose the 500 gm rate is within 3.7% of the 1 kg rate. That matters, because a 500 gm pack is a far smaller bet on a scent you have sold for three months than a kilogram is, and it costs you almost nothing per candle to keep that flexibility.
The size ladder: 15 g to 1 kg, and which rung you are actually on
CSI lists 92 fragrance oils. They do not all offer the same ladder, which is the first practical thing to check before you plan a range. Counting the variants published on the live pages in September 2026: 54 oils list a 15 g pack, 85 list 50 g, 90 list 100 g, 71 list 500 g and 90 list a 1 kg. The designer-inspired fine perfume oils generally start at 50 g. If you were planning a five-scent sampling round on 15 g packs, check that all five actually offer one before you build the plan.
| Pack | The question it answers | Candles at 6% (12 g) | Candles at 8% (16 g) | Candles at 10% (20 g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | Do I even like it in wax? | 1 | 0 — one 187 g test candle | 0 — one 150 g test candle |
| 50 g | Does it work in my jar and wick? | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| 100 g | Will it survive a market stall or a launch drop? | 8 | 6 | 5 |
| 500 g | Is it a range scent for this season? | 41 | 31 | 25 |
| 1 kg | Is it a bestseller I will reorder? | 83 | 62 | 50 |
The 15 g pack deserves more respect than it usually gets. At 8% of wax weight it is exactly one test candle of 187 g of wax — ₹94.88 of CSI 464 — or one 150 g candle at 10%. That is enough to judge cold throw honestly, enough to see whether the oil discolours your wax, and enough to burn twice. It is not enough to judge a jar size you have not settled on, which is what the 50 g pack is for.
Cost per candle at 6%, 8% and 10%
Here is the number that should sit on your pricing sheet: the oil cost of one candle. At the series unit — 200 g of wax — a 6% load is 12 g of oil, 8% is 16 g and 10% is 20 g. Everything below is priced at each oil’s 1 kg rate, because that is the rate a business eventually buys at.
| Oil | Per gram at 1 kg | Page candle range | 6% (12 g) | 8% (16 g) | 10% (20 g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2.83 | Soy 6–10% | ₹33.98 | ₹45.31 | ₹56.64 |
| British Rose | ₹3.07 | Soy up to 10% | ₹36.82 | ₹49.09 | ₹61.36 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹3.74 | Soy 6–10% | ₹44.86 | ₹59.81 | ₹74.76 |
| Woody Oud | ₹4.53 | Soy 6–10% | ₹54.37 | ₹72.50 | ₹90.62 |
| Lavender | ₹5.22 | 6–10% | ₹62.65 | ₹83.54 | ₹104.42 |
| Orange no.3 | ₹8.03 | 7–10% (start at 7%) | ₹96.38 — below the page range | ₹128.51 | ₹160.64 |
Add the wax and the wick and the picture settles. A 200 g CSI 464 candle is ₹101.48 of wax plus ₹5.90 for an Eco C1 wick. With British Rose at 8% the whole material cost is ₹156.47, of which the oil is about 31%. With Citrus Lemon it is ₹152.69; with Lavender ₹190.92; with Orange no.3, a fine perfume oil, ₹235.89 — about 51% more per candle, with the oil now around 54% of materials. Jars, lids, boxes, labels, courier and your time are all still to come.
Notice how small the load step is in rupees and how large it is in behaviour. Moving British Rose from 6% to 10% adds ₹24.54 of oil to a candle. On Orange no.3 the same step adds ₹64.26. Neither figure will make or break a price point, which is why the load should be decided by the burn test and the stated ceilings rather than by the cost sheet (more oil does not always mean a stronger candle).
Read the two ceilings before you read the price
A fragrance oil page states a candle usage range. A wax page states a maximum fragrance load. Both apply to your candle, and the lower figure governs. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 state up to 13% of total wax weight; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%. So a 13% wax with an oil whose page says 6–10% gives you 10%, and a 10% wax with an oil whose page says up to 13% also gives you 10%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a fragrance ceiling at all — ask on WhatsApp rather than assume one.
| Wax | Wax page ceiling | Oil | Oil page candle range | Your working maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 | Up to 10% | Japanese Cherry Blossom | 6–13% | 10% — the wax governs |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Up to 13% | Cinnamon Vanilla | Up to 13% (max) | 13% — both agree, test burn thoroughly |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Up to 13% | Roasted Coffee | Soy 6–10% | 10% — the oil governs |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | Up to 13% | Mango Coconut | 6–10% | 10% — the oil governs |
| CSI 464 | Up to 10% | Royal Apricot | 7–10% (start at 7%) | 10% — start at 7% |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | Not published | British Rose | Soy up to 10% | Use the oil range and ask on WhatsApp |
Thin pages are normal and should not frighten you off a good oil. Of the 92 oils, 72 state a candle usage range, 58 state a family or a note pyramid, 46 state IFRA certification and 16 publish a numeric flash point. Where a page publishes nothing, the honest position is that the figure is not published — ask for it on WhatsApp before you buy in quantity, and treat a conservative load as the starting point until you have documentation and a burn test.
Two other page facts change what you should buy, not just how much. Vanillin predicts yellowing: British Rose publishes 0% vanillin, while Vanilla Bean publishes 2.5% and warns of discolouration. The change is cosmetic, not a fault, but it decides whether a scent belongs in your white gifting jar (why some vanilla oils turn wax yellow). Flash point is a transport, storage and handling property — it does not rank hot throw and it is not the temperature at which fragrance burns off. Most published figures sit well above the 80–90°C window in which fragrance is added; where a page publishes a low one, such as Palo Santo at 93°C or Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C, add at the cool end of the window and do not hold the wax hot (add temperature for soy).
The sampling ladder that stops you owning the wrong kilogram
Buying five kilograms of five oils on a shortlist you assembled from descriptions costs ₹19,390.20 and answers nothing. The same shortlist, run down the ladder, costs ₹4,267.48 — about 22% of it — and ends with you owning a kilogram of the one oil you have actually sold.
The ladder also protects your cash at the worst possible time of year. Festive orders land with deadlines, and the temptation is to buy deep on a scent that has never been burned by a customer. Ordering early for Diwali is right; ordering deep on an untested scent is not. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and with a 14–21 day cure plus courier time, festive candles want to be poured by about mid-October — which means the sampling round has to be finished in September.
Stock, pack availability and the things that break a launch
Availability is a live number, and it moves. In September 2026, 82 of the 92 fragrance oils on CSI’s list are in stock in at least one size — which also means ten are not, and several oils that are in stock are missing exactly the size you want. Before a scent goes on a product page of your own, check three things on its CSI page: that the oil is in stock, that the pack size you will reorder at is in stock, and that the pack size ladder goes as far as your plan needs.
| Check | Where it lives | What good looks like | What to do if it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is the oil in stock at all? | Product page variant list | Your size shows as available | Shortlist a second scent in the same family before you design the label |
| Is my reorder size in stock? | Variant dropdown | The 500 g or 1 kg rung is available, not only 50 g | Ask on WhatsApp when the larger pack returns before you launch |
| Does the ladder reach my volume? | Variant list | 1 kg listed for scale; 15 g listed for sampling | Plan the range around oils that publish the rungs you need |
| Does the page state a candle range? | Product page specification block | A soy percentage, ideally with a paraffin figure too | Ask on WhatsApp and start conservatively until you have it in writing |
| Does the page state vanillin or discolouration? | Product page specification block | A figure or a plain statement either way | Pour a white test candle and look at it at day 14 before you promise a colour |
Duplicate listings are worth a moment too. A few scent names appear twice on the catalogue with different note pyramids and different prices behind them — Spicy Raspberry and Pomegranate Splash each have two pages. They are not the same oil. Pick the page you actually tested, save the link, and order from that link every time, because ordering the other one in December will hand you a scent your customers do not recognise.
GST, documentation and the honest bits of the bill
Three things belong in a buying guide that most fragrance pages leave out. GST invoicing is available on CSI orders — ask for it at the time of ordering with your GSTIN, because a hobby order and a business order look identical at checkout. MSDS and IFRA documentation is available on request over WhatsApp on +91 7397976926; you should have it on file for any oil you sell a candle made with, and you should have it before you commit to a kilogram rather than after. Bulk pricing is also a WhatsApp conversation: the store variants stop where they stop, and anything beyond them is quoted directly (buying fragrance oils in bulk).
The honest bit: prices on CSI product pages are stated as inclusive of taxes, but delivery is charged, and two real reviews on CSI product pages say plainly that the delivery charge is high enough to restrain how much they buy. That is a fair criticism and it belongs in your arithmetic. It also points at the same conclusion the size ladder does: consolidate. One order that carries wax, oil, wicks and jars together spreads the delivery cost across a whole batch; four separate small orders in a month spread nothing.
Festive scale makes that concrete. Five hundred 200 g candles at 8% need 100 kg of wax and 8 kg of oil. At CSI 464 and British Rose 1 kg pricing that is ₹50,740.00 of wax and ₹24,544.00 of oil before jars, wicks and labels (fragrance oil for 500 Diwali candles). At that size, the difference between a planned consolidated order and six panic orders is not a rounding error, and neither is the difference between the 100 gm rate and the 1 kg rate.
What to buy first, by where you are
These are sequences, not shopping lists. Each assumes the series unit of 200 g of wax, an 8% load and a single Eco C1 wick, and each stops at the point where the next purchase should be decided by a test rather than by a plan.
| Item | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 |
| British Rose | 15 gm | ₹94.40 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 20 wicks | ₹118.00 |
| Pen Thermometer | one | ₹354.00 |
| Oil | 15 gm | Per gram at 15 gm | Per gram at 1 kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹94.40 | ₹6.29 | ₹3.07 |
| Citrus Lemon | ₹81.42 | ₹5.43 | ₹2.83 |
| Lavender | ₹105.02 | ₹7.00 | ₹5.22 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | ₹3.74 |
| Woody Oud | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | ₹4.53 |
| Oil | 100 gm | Per gram | Oil per 200 g candle at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹342.20 | ₹3.42 | ₹54.75 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹390.00 | ₹3.90 | ₹62.40 |
| Item | Size | Price | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | 62 candles at 8% |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | 25 candles at 200 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 100 wicks | ₹590.00 | 100 candles |
One honest caveat on all four. None of them tells you which scent will sell in your city, and nobody who has not sold candles in your market can. What the ladder does is make being wrong cheap: a scent that fails at the 15 gm rung costs ₹94.40 and one evening. A scent that fails at the 1 kg rung costs ₹3,068.00 and a year of shelf space (how to compare two oils with a controlled burn test).
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, so the obvious commercial move on a buying guide is to send you to the kilogram. This page does the opposite: it argues that the 15 gm pack is the highest-value thing on the fragrance page, that the 500 gm rung is usually close enough to the 1 kg rate to be worth its flexibility, and that a scent you have not sold should never be bought deep. It also repeats a fair criticism from CSI’s own reviews — the delivery charge is high enough that small, frequent orders hurt.
Every price is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and the linked product pages are authoritative. Fragrance loads and candle ranges are quoted from each product page; where a page does not publish a figure — a candle range, a flash point, a vanillin content, or a fragrance ceiling on Eco Soy CSI 400 — it is described here as not published, and the honest answer is to ask on WhatsApp rather than to estimate. Pack availability counts, oil counts and stock counts are as listed on the live pages in September 2026 and will change. Prices are stated as inclusive of taxes on CSI product pages.
WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for bulk pricing above the listed pack sizes, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, or to ask which pack size fits the batch you are actually planning.
