projected saving per candle from the audit, if every test passes · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I audit a candle's complete BOM? List every line, including the ones people forget (dye, wick sticker, care sticker, tissue, void fill, tape, rejects, test candles); price each one landed, per saleable candle; give it a % share; flag whether the customer sees, experiences or never notices it; write the best alternative you would actually test and the rupee gap; then the test it needs and its risk. In our 200 g worked example the obvious six lines come to ₹320.36; the complete BOM is ₹383.58, and 9.2% of it is the lines usually left off.

What does the audit find without touching what the customer sees? A five-step change list worth ₹49.54 a candle (12.9%) if every test passes: cut rejects from 4% to 2% (₹6.04), test a 7% fragrance load (₹8.92), then a cheaper wax (₹26.23 after the load step), a cheaper shipper (₹5.58) and two stickers (₹1.30). The jar, label, retail box, tissue, wick and dye stay as they are.

Is CSI always the cheaper alternative? No. CSI has no cheaper jar for this candle (in-stock jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00), sells no printed labels or retail boxes, and its tissue and tape cost more per use than the worked example's. Our C2 wick costs ₹1.44 more than the reader's.

What is it worth? At 500 candles a month (worked example) the projected change list is ₹2,97,255.65 a year; the load, wax and drop tests cost ₹8,837.28 together and pay back in about 0.4 months.
The short answer
The audit columns: line · landed unit price · quantity · ₹ per candle · % share · customer sees / experiences / never notices · best alternative · gap · test needed · risk · priority.
The order it produces: process fixes first (rejects), purchasing swaps that need no burn test (stickers), formula tests one at a time (load, then wax), packaging the buyer only receives (shipper), and the visible cues (jar, label, box) last, by quote and buyer test only.
Worked result: ₹383.58 → ₹334.03 projected, ₹49.54 a candle, with the jar, label, retail box, tissue and scent unchanged.
The gate: each change gets its own controlled test before rollout; no two formula changes in one test.
The audit on one page: ₹383.58 a candle Worked-example 200 g candle, lines grouped. Bars to scale within each column; numbers in brackets are the change-list order. ₹ per candle gap to best seen? test verdict Wax ₹99.36 ₹25.94 test (3) Fragrance ₹80.00 ₹8.92 test (2) Jar with lid ₹85.00 none worth testing keep Box, tissue and label ₹52.00 none worth testing keep Shipping ₹36.00 ₹5.58 fit + drop (4) Wick and care stickers ₹4.50 ₹1.30 buy (5) Wick and dye ₹9.20 none worth testing keep Rejects and tests ₹17.52 ₹6.04 process (1) customer sees it experiences it never notices = one level of test Gaps use CSI live prices, 4 October 2026, where CSI is cheaper; reader prices are a worked example.
Eight groups of BOM lines, one row each. Read across: what the group costs, how big a gap the audit found, whether the customer perceives it, how heavy the test is, and the verdict. Rows with a gap and a white circle need only functional checks; the half-filled rows (wax, fragrance) need full burn tests because customers experience them; the black rows (jar, and box, tissue and label) are kept.
Straight answer
How do I audit a candle's complete BOM to identify the raw-material changes that could reduce COGS without reducing customer-perceived quality?
Build one table with a row for every material that ends up in, on or around a saleable candle, including dye, wick stickers, care stickers, tissue, void fill, tape, and allowances for rejected and test candles. For each row record the landed unit price, the quantity per candle, the rupees per saleable candle and its share of the total. Then add the columns that make it an audit rather than a costing: does the customer see it, experience it or never notice it? What is the best alternative you would genuinely test, and the gap in rupees? What test would prove the change safe, and how risky is it? Sort the gaps by risk: process fixes and invisible purchasing swaps first, formula changes one at a time with full burn tests, packaging the buyer only receives after fit and drop tests, and the visible cues (jar, label, box) only through quotes and buyer tests. On our worked 200 g candle that turns a ₹383.58 BOM into a projected ₹334.03 without changing the jar, label, retail box or scent, if every test passes.
One line: list everything, flag what the customer perceives, price the best alternative you would really test, and change the invisible lines one test at a time.
The no-test purchases from this audit: Candle Care Stickers (₹699.00 for 1,000 at 1.5 inch) and Wick Stickers (₹100.00 for 40). Both in stock on 4 October 2026; the 100-sticker wick sheet is out of stock.

Step 1: list every line, landed, per saleable candle

The lines you leave off a BOM are the ones nobody ever tries to reduce.

The title gives no figures, so this is a labelled worked example: a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil, 184 g wax), selling 500 a month, with every unit price from the reader's own suppliers (illustrative, not CSI prices, and not a claim that anyone is overpriced). "Landed" means what the material costs you delivered to your bench: if freight is charged separately, spread it over the units it brought (the full landed-cost method is the cost-per-gram worksheet). Two allowances turn "per poured candle" into "per saleable candle": rejects (4% of poured candles, worked example) and the test candles you pour each month (10 over 500, worked example).

Complete BOM · 200 g candle at 8% · worked example
Reader's unit prices (illustrative) · rejects allowance = in-candle materials × 4 ÷ 96 · test allowance = 10 × in-candle materials ÷ 500 · % to one place (rounding: 100.1%) · excludes labour, GST and marketing
# Line Quantity Unit price (reader's) ₹ per candle % of BOM Customer
1 Soy wax 184 g ₹540.00/kg ₹99.36 25.9% Experiences (finish, burn)
2 Fragrance oil (500 g packs) 16 g (8%) ₹5,000.00/kg ₹80.00 20.9% Experiences (throw)
3 Liquid dye 0.1 g ₹12.00/g ₹1.20 0.3% Sees (colour)

15 Test-candle allowance 10 a month over 500 in-candle cost ₹284.06 ₹5.68 1.5% Never notices
Complete BOM per saleable candle — ₹383.58 100.0% (rounding: 100.1%) —

The six lines most people would write down (wax, oil, wick, jar, label, box) come to ₹320.36. The complete BOM is ₹383.58. The difference is not rounding: dye, two kinds of sticker, tissue, void fill, tape, rejects and test candles together are ₹35.22, 9.2% of the total. Rejects alone cost ₹11.84 a saleable candle, more than the wick, because a rejected candle wastes every in-candle line at once (₹284.06 of materials). How to count rejects, breakage and failed batches properly is the true manufacturing cost post; where scale-up losses hide is the hidden-losses post.

Per saleable candle, every time
Price packaging per candle shipped and in-candle materials per candle poured, then convert both to per saleable candle. If you sell some candles without a retail box (wholesale, markets), split the BOM by channel rather than averaging, or the box will look cheaper than it is.

Step 2: flag what the customer perceives

Perceived quality is not one thing. It is a list of lines, and most of them are invisible.

Give every row one of three flags. Sees: the jar, lid, label, dye colour, retail box and tissue, things the customer judges before lighting the candle (₹139.70, 36.4% of this BOM). Experiences: wax, oil and wick, which the customer never sees but meets as throw, flame and burn (₹187.36, 48.8%). Never notices: the wick sticker, shipper, void fill, tape, rejects and test candles (₹56.52, 14.7%); the shipper and fill are seen at delivery, but only as protection.

The flags set the kind of test each change needs, not whether it is allowed. A "never notices" line needs a functional check (does the sticker hold, does the box survive a drop). An "experiences" line needs a controlled burn test, because throw and burn are exactly what a cheaper material can quietly change. A "sees" line needs buyers: put old and new in front of real customers before switching; the method is the jar-perception test.

Mistake: flagging wax and oil as "invisible" and changing them freely. Why it fails: the customer never sees them, but they are the candle's performance. A cheaper wax that frosts, or a lower load that throws weakly, is noticed more than a different jar. Fix: keep "experiences" as its own flag, with the heaviest test on the list.

Step 3: best alternative, gap, test and risk

A gap only counts if the alternative is one you would genuinely put in a test.

For each line write the cheapest alternative you would actually test (a CSI item where CSI really is cheaper, a quote where it is not), the rupee gap per candle, the test it needs and the risk to the customer experience. These are the audit's answers on CSI's live prices:

Audit · alternatives, gaps, tests · worked example
Gap = reader's line − best alternative, per candle · CSI live prices, 4 October 2026 · priority = position in the change list (Step 4)
Line Best alternative and gap Customer Test needed Risk Priority
Wax ₹25.94 (Eco Soy CSI 400) or ₹6.00 (CSI 464) Experiences Full retest: wick bracket, throw, finish High 3
Fragrance ₹8.92 (load 8% → 7%) Experiences Blind throw test across burn life Medium 2
Dye ₹0.30 at a 0.1 g dose (worked example) Sees Colour match Low ignore
Wick C1 is ₹2.10 less, C2 ₹1.44 more Experiences Burn decision only High keep
Wick sticker ₹0.50 (CSI 40-sheet) Never notices Adhesion in hot wax Low 5
Jar with lid none: in-stock CSI jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00 Sees first Quotes + buyer test High keep
Front label CSI sells none: quote elsewhere Sees Buyer test High keep
Care sticker ₹0.80 (1.5 inch roll) or ₹0.67 (1 inch) Sees (base) Fit on base, legibility Low 5
Retail box CSI sells none: quote elsewhere Unboxes Buyer test High keep
Tissue a full CSI sheet is ₹2.50 dearer; a quarter sheet would be ₹1.62 Unboxes Measure your wrap Low check
Shipper ₹5.58 (11 x 11 x 8 cm) or ₹1.28 (7 x 5 x 4 inch) Receives Fit + drop test Medium 4
Void fill Air Bubble Roll length not stated: cannot cost Receives — — ask
Tape CSI 200 m roll is ₹0.06 dearer per parcel Receives — — keep
Rejects ₹6.04 (4% → 2%) Never notices Batch-sheet tracking Low 1
Test allowance the cost of doing tests: keep Never notices — — keep

Three honest results stand out. CSI is not the answer for most visible lines. The in-stock CSI jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00, far above the reader's ₹85.00, and CSI sells no printed labels or retail boxes. CSI is dearer on some small lines. A full 50 x 75 cm tissue sheet is ₹6.50 against the reader's ₹4.00 wrap (cut it into quarters and it is ₹1.62: measure what you actually use), the 200 m paper tape works out at ₹2.06 for half a metre, and our C2 wick is ₹1.44 dearer than the reader's. The tape's variant says "50 meters" while its description says "75 meters long", and the Air Bubble Roll's length is not stated in the text we captured, so ask us before costing either. The real gaps are in wax, load, rejects and the shipper.

Argued against our own interest: do not switch the wick to save ₹2.10 a candle with our C1, and do not move your tissue and tape to us: on these numbers we are no cheaper, and the wick is a burn decision. Spend your test candles on the load and wax lines, where the money is.

Step 4: the prioritised change list

Sort by risk first and rupees second. Then count each saving once.

The audit becomes a change list in five steps, ordered so the least risky changes go first and the formula changes go one at a time. Annual figures use the worked example's 500 candles a month.

Change list · in order · worked example
Saving per saleable candle · annual = saving × 500 × 12 · step 3 is measured after step 2 (186 g of wax at 7%), so nothing is counted twice
Step Change Type Saving per candle Per year Proof needed
1 Cut rejects from 4% to 2% process, no material change ₹6.04 ₹36,232.14 batch sheet, reject log
2 Fragrance load 8% → 7% formula (fragrance) ₹8.92 ₹53,520.00 blind throw test, full life
3 Wax → Eco Soy CSI 400 (after step 2) formula (wax) ₹26.23 ₹1,57,380.00 wick bracket, throw, finish, full life
4 Shipper → Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm packaging the buyer receives ₹5.58 ₹33,480.00 fit check + drop test
5 Wick and care stickers from CSI purchasing ₹1.30 ₹7,806.00 adhesion, fit on base

Step 3 is priced after step 2 on purpose. At 7% the candle carries 186 g of wax, so the wax gap is ₹26.23, not the ₹25.94 measured on 184 g; adding the two gaps measured separately would give ₹34.86 instead of the correct ₹35.15. Small, but the habit matters: overlapping savings counted twice are how cost-down plans miss their numbers. Rejects (step 1) are a process fix with no material change: tighter pour temperatures, wick centring, a reject log on the batch sheet. That is why they lead.

Projected BOM if every change passes · worked example
Same 200 g candle, same jar, label, retail box, tissue, wick and dye · % to one place · projected, not proven
Line ₹ per candle % of BOM
Wax ₹74.21 (186 g Eco Soy) 22.2%
Fragrance ₹70.00 (14 g, 7%) 21.0%
Dye ₹1.20 0.4%
Wick ₹8.00 2.4%
Wick sticker ₹2.50 (CSI) 0.7%
Jar with lid ₹85.00 25.4%
Front label ₹6.00 1.8%
Care sticker ₹0.70 (CSI 1.5 inch) 0.2%
Retail box ₹42.00 12.6%
Tissue ₹4.00 1.2%
Shipper ₹22.42 (CSI) 6.7%
Void fill ₹6.00 1.8%
Tape ₹2.00 0.6%
Rejects at 2% ₹5.05 1.5%
Test allowance ₹4.95 1.5%
Projected BOM ₹334.03 100.0%

The projection is ₹334.03, ₹49.54 (12.9%) below ₹383.58. That is ₹1.47 more than the five steps added up (₹48.07), because cheaper in-candle materials also shrink the rejects and test allowances: each rejected or test candle now wastes less. The jar, label, retail box, tissue and dye (₹138.20 of what the customer sees) are untouched; the only seen items that change are a care sticker on the base and the shipper at delivery, each after its own check. It is a projection: it becomes a fact only when each test passes and a month of production confirms it. Keeping the before-and-after BOM that proves it, with rejects and labour included, is the before-and-after BOM post; making the audit a monthly habit is the continuous cost-optimisation system.

When the audit finds the visible lines are the problem: if the jar or box takes far more of the BOM than your price can carry, the audit has done its job by saying so. That is a product decision (a different jar tier, a different price, a separate SKU), tested on buyers, not a raw-material swap. The ₹45 box and ₹70 jar post works through outer packaging; the jar-first post the container.

Step 5: the test gate for each change

One change, one test, one result. Then the next.
1
Freeze the controlRecord the current candle exactly: wax lot, oil lot and load, wick, jar batch, temperatures, cure. Keep two finished candles as retained samples.
2
Step 1, rejects: measure before you fixLog every reject with its cause for a month (frosting, sinkholes, wick off-centre, glass marks). Fix the biggest cause; compare the next month's rate.
3
Step 2, load: nine candlesThree each at 8%, 7.5% and 7% in your wax, wick and jar; cure as your oil page advises; burn to the end; judge throw blind. About ₹3,756.54 at full in-candle cost plus 6 hours at ₹200.00 (worked example).
4
Step 3, wax: only after step 2 passesThree control candles, three in Eco Soy CSI 400 with your wick, three with a second wick rung. About ₹4,156.54 with 8 hours of labour. Never test wax and load in the same arm.
5
Step 4, shipper: fit, then dropCheck the jar and lid fit the box with padding (the page does not say inside or outside), then send or drop-test ten parcels (about ₹924.20 at a ₹70.00 courier, worked example). Count breakages.
6
Step 5, stickers: adhesion and fitTen candles with the new wick stickers poured hot; the care sticker on ten bases. No burn test needed.

All tests together cost about ₹8,837.28 and, if every change passes, pay back in about 0.4 months at 500 candles a month. Which existing results you can keep when only the wax changes is the wax-supplier retest post; finding the lowest fragrance load that still throws is the lowest effective load post; recording each change is the change-control form.

Mistake: running steps 2 and 3 together "to save time" because both are invisible. Why it fails: if the combined candle throws weakly or tunnels, you cannot tell whether the load or the wax did it, and you lose both savings while you find out. Fix: one formula variable per test. Run the purchasing and packaging checks in parallel, because they cannot interact with the burn.

The CSI items the audit points to

Five items the change list uses, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 4 October 2026. CSI publishes no throw or burn data, so nothing is ranked on performance. Per-candle wax figures use 184 g (200 g at 8%).

1
wax · the biggest gap in this audit · flat per kilo
Eco Soy CSI 400
Against the worked-example ₹540.00 wax, 184 g of Eco Soy CSI 400 costs ₹73.42: a ₹25.94 gap, the largest in the audit. The page lists "Wax Type 100% Soy Wax" and "Recommended Wick Eco Wicks"; no load ceiling in the text we captured. Against our own interest: the 5 kg is no cheaper per kilo than the 1 kg, and this is the riskiest change on the list: a new wax re-opens wick, throw, finish and adhesion.
Size Price Per kg 184 g per candle

5 kg ₹1,996.00 ₹399.20 ₹73.45

wax · the smaller, lower-risk gap
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) for Container Candles
If the audit prefers a smaller step, CSI 464 saves ₹6.00 a candle against the ₹540.00 wax. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", which covers this candle at 8% or 7%. It is still a new wax and still a full retest; flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, so buy the test quantity only.
Size Price Per kg 184 g per candle
500 g ₹260.00 ₹520.00 ₹95.68

packaging · the shipper the buyer receives
Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 x 11 x 8 cm)
Change-list step 4: ₹22.42 a box against the worked example's ₹28.00 carton, ₹5.58 saved. The page says "Size: 11 x 11 x 8 cm" without saying inside or outside, and "self-locking tabs": check your jar and lid against it before buying, then drop-test ten parcels. The 7 x 5 x 4 inch box (₹26.72) is the taller option. Limitation: a lighter carton that breaks one more candle in fifty can wipe the saving out (the ₹20 packaging saving and 3% breakage post works through that maths).
Box and pack Price Per box
Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm · 50 ₹1,121.00 ₹22.42
Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm · 100 ₹2,242.00 ₹22.42

Candle Care Stickers Roll
The audit's care-sticker line: ₹0.70 each from the 1,000-sticker 1.5 inch roll, ₹0.83 from the 500-sticker 1 inch roll, against the reader's ₹1.50. The captured text gives only sizes and counts ("Size: 1 inch", "500 Stickers in a single roll"), not the printed wording, so check what it says covers your safety text and that 1.5 inches fits the base.
Pack Price Per sticker
Pack of 500 (1 inch) ₹413.00 ₹0.83
Pack of 1000 (1.5 inch) ₹699.00 ₹0.70

Candle Wick Stickers (10 mm)
₹2.50 a sticker from the 40-sticker sheet against the reader's ₹3.00: ₹0.50 a candle. The page describes "10mm Candle Wick Round Stickers". The 100-sticker sheet is out of stock on 4 October 2026. Small money, no burn test: an adhesion check in hot wax is enough.
Pack Price Per sticker

The CSI principle
List everything. Flag what the customer perceives. Change the invisible, one test at a time.
On this candle the audit finds ₹49.54 a candle without touching the jar, label, retail box or scent, and tells you plainly where CSI is not the cheaper option.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the waxes, wicks, stickers and boxes named here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that we have no cheaper jar for this candle, sell no printed labels or retail boxes, are dearer on tissue and tape per use, and that our C2 wick costs more than the worked example's.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the 100-sticker wick sheet and the Corrugated 3 ply 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box are out of stock on that date and flagged where they appear; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent or contradictory in the text we captured (box inside or outside, tape length, bubble roll length), we say so.

Every reader unit price, the 0.1 g dye dose, the quarter-sheet tissue wrap, the 4% and 2% reject rates, 10 test candles and 500 sales a month, labour at ₹200.00, the ₹70.00 courier and the test sizes are labelled worked examples. Which changes pass is your test's answer. This is practical business judgement, not financial, tax or legal advice. Frequently asked questions

What should a candle bill of materials include?
Every material in, on or around a saleable candle: wax, oil, dye, wick, wick sticker, jar and lid, labels, care sticker, retail box, tissue, shipper, void fill, tape, plus allowances for rejects and test candles. In our worked example the forgotten lines are 9.2% of the cost.
How do I find cost savings in my candle without lowering quality?
Flag each BOM line as seen, experienced or never noticed, find the best alternative you would test for each, and change the invisible lines first, one controlled test at a time. Leave the jar, label and box unless buyers approve a change.
Which candle costs can I cut without customers noticing?
Usually rejects, wick and care stickers, and the shipper (after a drop test); then fragrance load and wax, but only after full burn tests, because customers experience those as throw and burn. In the worked example that is ₹49.54 a candle.
How do I calculate candle cost per saleable candle?
Add in-candle materials per poured candle, convert with your reject rate (× 1 ÷ (1 − reject rate)), add test-candle cost spread over sales, then add packaging per candle shipped. The worked example comes to ₹383.58.
Is it cheaper to buy candle packaging from my wax supplier?
Not always. At CSI the 11 x 11 x 8 cm shipper (₹22.42) and stickers are cheaper than the worked example's, but tissue and tape are not, and CSI sells no printed retail boxes or labels. Audit line by line.
How often should I audit my candle BOM?
Whenever a supplier price, a pack size, your volume or your reject rate changes, and at least before each festive season. A monthly review loop is the subject of the continuous-optimisation post in this series.
Your complete BOM, audited
Every line, a customer flag, the best alternative, the test it needs.
On our worked 200 g candle the audit projects ₹49.54 a candle without touching the jar, label, retail box or scent. Send us your audited lines on WhatsApp and we will tell you which CSI items would actually lower them, and which would not.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on "my candle is too expensive to make" (6001–6020) in the series on candle cost reduction and raw-material optimisation. It owns the complete BOM audit procedure: every line including hidden ones, landed price per saleable candle, % share, a customer-perception flag, best alternative and gap, test and risk, and the prioritised change list, worked on a 200 g candle.
