I Changed from Lavender to a Heavy Oud Fragrance at the Same Load — Should I Automatically Assume the Same Wick Will Work?
Share
Why buy the bigger wick before I know I need it? Because a failed confirm otherwise costs a whole extra order cycle. In our worked example (a 10-day order-to-bench time, labelled), buying both arms together reads them by day 20; buying the oud first and the wick after a fail reaches the same point on day 40.
What is in the switch kit? Dark Vanilla Oud 100 g + 15 g (₹695.02) and an Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40): ₹789.42 in one shipment, with your lavender C1 and CSI 464 from stock. Six 150 g candles at 8%, oil left for a three-candle re-pour.
What does the insurance cost if C1 passes? The three C2 candles, ₹450.78 in materials, and seven spare C2. Against 38 days to Diwali on 1 October 2026, twenty days is often worth more than that.
Same load, different fuel
Both CSI pages here say the same thing about load: Lavender "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles", Dark Vanilla Oud "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles". That shared wording is exactly why the assumption feels safe. But load wording describes how much oil the page expects in a candle, not how that oil burns. Dark Vanilla Oud's listed notes run from "vanilla and spicy cardamom" through "exotic oud and deep amber" to "warm musk and woody cedar": the heavier, resinous, vanilla-led end of the range that makers commonly find needs a wick adjustment. Lavender's ("fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base") sits at the lighter end. These are tendencies drawn from composition, not measurements; CSI publishes no composition and no wick data for any oil.
| Evidence | Carries over? | In the kit |
|---|---|---|
| Jar inside diameter, fill, wax, pour temperature | Yes | Nothing new |
| Load against ceilings | Yes: 8% is inside both pages and CSI 464 (8.70% of wax) | Nothing new |
| C1 approved at 8% | No: approved for lavender | Three oud candles on C1 |
| "C2 would be too big" | Never tested with oud | Three oud candles on C2 |
| Throw, colour, cure behaviour | No | Judged on the same six candles |
What changes and what does not when one fragrance replaces another, item by item, is the matrix in the fragrance-change hub. If your oud is already mushrooming on the lavender wick, the diagnosis (oil identity versus load, before any wick change) is the lavender-fine, oud-mushrooms post. Whether one up-rung can then serve every oud in your range is the oud-family rung post; this page buys for one oud.
The switch kit, line by line
The worked example is your own jar at 7.5 cm inside. CSI has no in-stock jar at that size on 1 October 2026: the three listings that state 7.5 cm (a ceramic container and two bamboo-lid glass jars, all giving a width or an unspecified diameter, not an inside one) are out of stock. A 150 g fill at 8% (12 g of oil, 138 g of wax), poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, with lavender approved on C1. A 7.5 cm inside diameter is a 44.18 cm² pool; a very rough rule of thumb (an hour per 2.5 cm) puts a full first pool at about 3.0 hours.
| Item | Count needed | Smallest in-stock pack | Price | Per unit | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco C1 (confirm on the lavender wick) | 3 (+3 re-pour) | your stock, or 20 (10-pack out of stock) | ₹118.00 if needed | ₹5.90 | — |
| Eco C2 (up-rung) | 3 (+3 re-pour) | 10 | ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 | 4 after a re-pour, 7 without |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | 72 g (+36 g re-pour) | 100 g + 15 g | ₹695.02 | ₹5.90 per g at 100 g | 7 g after a re-pour |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 828 g (+re-pour, 1,242 g in all) | your lavender stock, or 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,014.80 if needed | ₹0.51 per g | 758 g after a re-pour |
| Your 7.5 cm jars | 6 (+3) | your production jars | yours | — | — |
| Kit cash | oud + C2 in one shipment | ₹789.42 | from nothing, excl. jars: ₹1,922.22 | ||
Why 100 g + 15 g and not 100 g alone (₹684.40 with the wicks)? A single 100 g leaves 28 g after six candles: two candles, not a three-candle cell. The 15 g adds ₹105.02 and means a split cell can be re-poured from the same shipment. Two 50 g bottles (₹640.00) cost more for the same 100 g; 100 g + 50 g (₹910.00) leaves more than the re-pour needs. One test candle costs ₹146.72 on C1 and ₹150.26 on C2 in materials; the six consume ₹890.95, excluding jars.
The real cost of a failed confirm is time
Here is the arithmetic the diagram draws, with labelled assumptions: an order-to-bench time of 10 days (yours; CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish delivery times, so ask us for a dispatch date), a 7-day cure (Dark Vanilla Oud's page states no cure time in the text we captured; many makers wait about a week before judging soy) and three daily 3–4 hour burns to reach a burn-3 screen.
| Route | Bought up front | If C1 passes | If C1 fails | Up-rung screened by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One shipment (this kit) | ₹789.42 | Approve C1; 7 spare C2; ₹450.78 of materials spent on the C2 arm | C2 already read alongside | day 20 |
| Oud first, wick later | ₹695.02 (oud only) | Approve C1; nothing spare | Order C2, wait, pour, cure, screen again | day 40 |
So the up-front C2 arm is an insurance premium of about ₹450.78 in materials plus ₹94.40 of wicks, most of which you keep. What it insures against is 20 days in this example. On 1 October 2026, Diwali is 38 days away: on the one-shipment route both arms are read by day 20, leaving the rest of October for the leader's full-life burns; on the two-shipment route a failed confirm puts the up-rung's first read on day 40, two days after Diwali, with its full life still to run. A longer lead time widens the gap: with a four-week supplier, the logic in the four-week lead-time post applies to test wicks as much as to production stock.
| Your order-to-bench time | One shipment: both arms read by | Two shipments, C1 fails: up-rung read by | Second route's first read lands |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | day 13 | day 26 | before Diwali (day 38) |
| 5 days | day 15 | day 30 | before Diwali (day 38) |
| 10 days | day 20 | day 40 | after Diwali (day 38) |
| 20 days | day 30 | day 60 | after Diwali (day 38) |
| 28 days | day 38 | day 76 | after Diwali (day 38) |
At a three-day turnaround the second route still reads the up-rung before Diwali, though with little time left for its full life; from about ten days onwards it does not. The full-life burns that follow a screen need the same days on either route, so the table understates nothing: whatever the gap at the screen, it carries through to approval.
Running the six candles
After the screen: what each result buys
Approval follows the two-gate rule in the cluster hub: a screen at burn 3, then all three candles of one arm to about 1 cm left.
| At burn 3 | Reading | Purchase consequence |
|---|---|---|
| C1 reaches the glass cleanly; C2 runs a tall flame or deep pool | The lavender wick carries the oud | One wick for both lines; 7 C2 go to other tests |
| C1 rings or carbons heavily; C2 reaches the glass cleanly | Oud needs the up-rung | Burn C2 to the end, then a C2 production order for the oud line only |
| Both look clean | Not decided | Burn both to the end; the final third usually separates them |
| Only 1 or 2 of 3 pass in an arm | Not decided | Re-pour that arm from the kit: the 15 g is there for this |
| C2 still rings in a 7.5 cm jar | Rule out other causes before a bigger wick | Check centring and session length first; then ask us before buying a bigger wick |
The oud line in production
Size the order from production: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with 5% as our worked-example allowance. At 120 oud candles a month on C2 that is 126 wicks (₹1,189.44), a 100 + 20 + 10 of C2 (₹1,227.20, 130 wicks), flat at ₹9.44 each. The oud is 1,440 g a month, ₹8,195.04 at the 1 kg per-gram price; buy it as 500 g bottles if you want the ₹1.00. Per candle at production prices, lavender on C1 costs ₹138.57; oud on C1 ₹144.21; oud on C2 ₹147.75, ₹9.18 more than the lavender candle, of which ₹3.54 is the wick and ₹5.64 the oil. The C2 step adds ₹424.80 a month at this volume.
Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock: about 4.2 wicks a day × 10 days + a week of cover puts it at about 71 C2. Set it separately from the C1 point for lavender. Reorder points for several wick sizes at once are the reorder-point post.
What to buy, and what to leave
Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts use 12 g per 150 g candle at 8%. A cheaper oud for a later family test, Woody Oud, is ₹453.12 for 100 g; it is not in this kit.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wicks and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to skip the bigger wick when you have no deadline, that our C2 20-pack is not needed for this kit, and that two 500 g bottles of this oud cost less than our 1 kg.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Oil, wax and wick wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, such as the oud's cure time and vanillin content, we say so.
The 7.5 cm jar (yours; CSI's three 7.5 cm listings are out of stock), 150 g fill, lead time, cure, screening schedule, 5% allowance and 120-candle month are labelled worked examples or our judgement; CSI publishes no delivery times and no wick-performance data.
