CSI Wick Buying · Vanilla vs Lavender
If lavender passes and vanilla tunnels in the same jar, the oil is the variable. Buy one rung up for vanilla only, prove it through the full life, and stock it only for the vanilla you sell.
₹2.56
extra per vanilla candle on Cotton Braided instead of Eco C2 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Can the fragrance require a different wick? Yes, commonly. Vanilla and other heavy, vanillin-rich oils are often linked to a smaller flame or slower edge than lavender on the same wick, in the same jar and wax. If lavender passes on Eco C2 and vanilla tunnels on it, the fix to test is one rung up for vanilla only.

What do I buy? One Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) and a 50 g Dark Vanilla (₹410.00): three vanilla candles on Cotton Braided at 16 g each. ₹530.00 in all, plus a 1 kg bag of CSI 464 (₹507.40) if you need wax. Pour one lavender candle on C2 in the same batch as a control.

What does the extra rung cost? ₹2.56 a candle (Cotton Braided ₹12.00 against C2 ₹9.44, flat at every pack). At 100 vanilla candles a month that is ₹256.00; at 400, ₹1,024.00. Lavender stays on C2.

Does Cotton Braided become a stocked wick? Only after all three vanilla candles pass a full-life burn, and then only if vanilla is a regular line: stock it at vanilla's monthly volume plus a small safety stock. For a one-off batch, buy the exact count.
The short answer
Buy: Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00) + Dark Vanilla 50 g (₹410.00) = ₹530.00. Three vanilla candles on the up-rung; your C2 failure is the documented fail below.
Keep: lavender on C2. Moving it to Cotton Braided would cost ₹2.56 a candle more and needs its own test; a light oil on a bigger wick commonly runs hot.
Approve: screen at burn 3, then burn all three vanilla candles to about 1 cm left. Stock Cotton Braided only after that.
The honest limit: CSI has no sized, tabbed wick between C2 and Cotton Braided. If Cotton Braided runs hot for vanilla, the in-between options are a pair of C1, a lower load or a different vanilla.
What the vanilla rung costs a month, by how much vanilla you sell Worked example, CSI live prices, 1 October 2026: Cotton Braided ₹12.00 vs Eco C2 ₹9.44 a wick at every pack, a ₹2.56 step. Solid: vanilla alone moves up a rung; lavender (140 a month) stays on C2. Dashed: every candle on Cotton Braided, lavender included, which starts at ₹358.40 a month before one vanilla candle is sold, and is untested for lavender. 0 250 500 750 1,000 1,250 1,500 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 Vanilla candles a month Extra wick cost a month (₹) one-off test order ₹530.00 all on Cotton Braided vanilla only ₹128.00 ₹256.00 ₹512.00 ₹1,024.00 Below the dotted line, a month of the rung costs less than the test order: 25 candles is ₹64.00 a month, ₹768.00 a year. Excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST. The volumes are worked examples; the ₹2.56 step is the live price difference.
The extra rung's cost grows with vanilla volume only: ₹2.56 a candle, so it stays small until vanilla is a big line. The dashed line is the mistake of moving lavender to the bigger wick too: it costs ₹358.40 a month before you sell a single vanilla candle, and lavender has not been tested on it. The dotted line is the one-off test order that settles the question.
Straight answer
My lavender candle burns perfectly but vanilla tunnels in the exact same jar and wax. Can the fragrance require a different wick?
Yes. With jar, wax, load and wick held still, the oil is the variable left, and vanilla is one of the oils most commonly linked to needing a wick step up: heavier and vanillin-rich oils often give a smaller flame and a slower edge than lavender on the same wick. That is a tendency, not a law, so test it rather than assume it. Buy one rung up for vanilla only: in CSI's range that is Cotton Braided (10-pack, ₹120.00) above the Eco C2 your lavender uses, with a 50 g Dark Vanilla (₹410.00) for three 200 g candles at 8%. Pour them in one batch with one lavender candle on C2 as a control, burn in 3–4 hour sessions, screen at burn 3 and approve only when all three vanilla candles pass the full life. If they do, vanilla runs on Cotton Braided at ₹2.56 a candle more and lavender stays on C2; whether that wick earns a permanent place on your shelf depends on how much vanilla you sell.
One line: ₹530.00 tests the up-rung for vanilla; ₹2.56 a vanilla candle is what it costs if it wins.
The vanilla order: Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) and Dark Vanilla 50 g (₹410.00), both in stock on 1 October 2026. Your C2 and lavender you already own.
Cotton Braided — ₹120.00 for 10

The vanilla-only order

Lavender has already answered its question. Only vanilla needs new wicks.

The worked example is the cluster's jar: your own 200 g jar about 8.0 cm across the inside (50.27 cm² of pool), CSI 464, 8% of total weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax per candle). Lavender passed a full-life burn on Eco C2. Dark Vanilla, poured the same way, leaves a ring of wax on the glass. The purchase is the rung above C2 and enough vanilla for three candles on it. Nothing else.

The order is ₹530.00, or ₹1,037.40 if you need the wax. Why three vanilla candles and not one: one candle can tunnel or run hot for reasons that have nothing to do with the wick (an off-centre tab, a draught, an air pocket), and the approval standard this series uses is three candles through the full life. Why no C2 vanilla candles: you already have them. The candles that tunnelled are the fail below the new rung; keep their notes. If you poured only one vanilla candle on C2, read the next section before you order.

Don't buy the 100 g, or the 500 g, yet: three candles use 48 g; the 50 g leaves 2 g. The 100 g (₹790.00) would leave 52 g, room for 3 more candles, at ₹380.00 more. Buy it only if you already doubt the result will be clean. The 500 g is for production, after approval. Argued against our own interest: the smaller bottle is the right purchase for a three-candle question.

Why the 8% stays fixed: 8% of total weight is 8.70% of the wax weight, inside both the Dark Vanilla page's "candles (6-10%)" and CSI 464's "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" on either reading. Changing the load and the wick in the same candles would leave you unable to say which one fixed the tunnel.

Before you buy: make sure it is the fragrance

A ₹120.00 wick pack is cheap. Three vanilla candles poured to fix the wrong problem are not.

"Exact same jar and wax" is the claim to check. The cheapest purchase is the one you don't make because the tunnel came from somewhere else. Five questions, none of which costs anything:

Is the fragrance the variable? · a no-cost check before the order
If any answer is "no", fix that first; the up-rung order can wait
Question Why it matters If the answer is no
Did two or more vanilla candles tunnel, not one? One candle can fail for a non-wick reason Pour two more on C2 first (you own the wicks)
Same wax bag, jar batch, fill weight and load as the lavender? Any of these can move the result as much as the oil Re-pour vanilla to match, or treat it as a new system
Wick centred, sessions 3–4 hours, still air? Short sessions and draughts fake tunnels Repeat the burn properly
Cured as long as the lavender? The Dark Vanilla page says cure "at least 48-72 hours before burn testing" Wait, then burn
Ring still there at burn 3, not shrinking? A first-burn ring that closes by burn 3 may not need a bigger wick Keep burning; read the 8 cm vanilla catch-up post

If all five are "yes", the oil is the variable, and the tendency gives you a direction: heavier and vanillin-rich oils are commonly linked to a smaller flame on the same wick, so the test rung is above C2, not below. The full method for bracketing a heavy and a light oil around their own centres (lavender on C1 and C2, vanilla on C2 and Cotton Braided) is the offset-bracket post; this page owns only the vanilla purchase that follows from it.

A rough timing check also helps. A very rough rule of thumb puts a first burn to the edge at about one hour per 2.5 cm of width: about 3.2 hours for 8 cm, inside the commonly quoted 3–4 hours for a full first pool. A vanilla candle still well short of the glass at four hours, on burn 3, with the lavender reaching it, is the signal this page is written for.

Mistake: fixing the tunnel by raising the vanilla load, "to give the wick more fuel". Why it fails: more oil commonly makes a flame smaller or sootier, not bigger, and you lose the clean comparison with lavender. Fix: hold 8%, change the wick for vanilla only. Load is a separate decision (the 6% to 9% cost-benefit post).

Three Cotton Braided candles: grams, wax, rupees

Four candles, one batch, one variable: the wick under the vanilla.
1
Use jars from the approved batchSame jar batch as your passing lavender candles; measure the inside diameter of two at rim and middle so you know you are comparing like with like.
2
Weigh one pot for the vanilla48 g of Dark Vanilla into 552 g of CSI 464 for three candles, mixed once. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; if your jar states a lower hot-pour limit, the lower figure governs.
3
Pour the lavender control the same dayOne candle, 16 g of lavender in 184 g of the same wax, on C2. It tells you the batch behaves like the one that passed.
4
Centre and labelCotton Braided is tall ("Height of the wick is 10.16 cm" on its page): check it stands clear of your fill line and trim after setting. Label DV-CB-1 to 3 and LAV-C2.
5
Cure, then burn 3–4 hour sessionsAt least as long as the lavender cured; still air; trim to about 5–6 mm before each burn; full cool-down between sessions; within sight.
6
Log pool, flame, carbon and the final thirdPool at four points each hour, flame height against a ruler, carbon on the wick, and near the base how close the flame sits to the glass, judged by eye, never by touch (the four-point pool log).
Test bill · four 200 g candles at 8% · worked example
Dark Vanilla at the 50 g price (₹8.20/g) · Lavender at its 100 g price (₹5.40/g) · CSI 464 at ₹93.36 a candle · wicks at pack price per wick · jars excluded
Candle Oil Wax Wick Materials
Dark Vanilla on Cotton Braided × 3 16 g = ₹131.20 184 g = ₹93.36 ₹12.00 ₹236.56 each, ₹709.68 for three
Lavender on C2 × 1 (control) 16 g = ₹86.40 184 g = ₹93.36 ₹9.44 ₹189.20
Materials consumed four candles ₹898.89
For comparison: Dark Vanilla on C2 ₹131.20 ₹93.36 ₹9.44 ₹234.00

Each figure excludes your jar, labour, freight, packaging and GST. A vanilla candle on Cotton Braided costs ₹236.56; on C2, ₹234.00. The wick is the smallest line in either. What the test really spends is three candles of vanilla and wax, and that is the argument for running it properly once rather than twice.

What the three candles can tell you

Three outcomes, three different next orders, and one of them is "buy nothing".
Reading the vanilla test · the next purchase (our judgement, labelled)
Gate 1 at burn 3 screens; Gate 2, all three candles to about 1 cm left, approves · commonly cited rules of thumb: full pool in about 3–4 hours, pool about 0.5–1 cm deep, flame about 2.5–5 cm
What the candles show Reading Next purchase
Lavender control misbehaves The batch changed, not the oil Nothing until you know why
All three reach the glass by burn 3, calm flame, little carbon; all pass the full life Cotton Braided approved for Dark Vanilla in this jar, wax and load Production quantity (below); C2 stays for lavender
Edge reached, but tall flame, mushrooming or a pool well past 1 cm Too much wick: vanilla sits between C2 and Cotton Braided Three candles on 2 × C1 (C1 20-pack ₹118.00), or a lower load, or ask us
Still a ring on Cotton Braided Beyond CSI's single tabbed rungs for this oil A double-wick test, or a different vanilla
Passes burns 1–3, fails in the final third Heat built late; not approved Nothing; the in-between options above

The middle case deserves honesty. CSI's sized, tabbed rungs are C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, and the jump from C2 to Cotton Braided is large. A pair of C1 wicks spread across an 8 cm pool is the in-between option we can sell, at ₹11.80 a candle against ₹12.00 for one Cotton Braided; how far apart to set a pair is geometry for the 8.5 cm double-arm post. A different vanilla is the other route: Vanilla Bean states "Vanillin Content: 2.5%" and Dark Vanilla only "Vanillin present", but neither figure predicts the wick, which is why that comparison is its own test. If neither works, we would rather say so than sell you a fourth wick that does not exist in our range.

Mistake: approving Cotton Braided at burn 3 and ordering 500. Why it fails: the bigger wick is the one most likely to run hot near the base, where heat commonly builds; burn 3 cannot see the bottom of the jar. Fix: all three vanilla candles to about 1 cm left first. The seven spare wicks in the 10-pack cover your first production candles while you wait.

Does Cotton Braided become a stocked wick?

The rung costs ₹2.56 a candle. Whether it earns a shelf depends on how many candles carry it.

Once vanilla passes on Cotton Braided, you run two wicks in one jar: C2 for lavender, Cotton Braided for vanilla. Because CSI prices both flat per wick, the second SKU costs nothing extra per wick in small packs. What it does cost is the price step on every vanilla candle, a second bin to count, and a second safety stock. The step scales with vanilla volume alone:

The vanilla rung by monthly volume · worked example
₹2.56 a candle (Cotton Braided ₹12.00 − C2 ₹9.44) · flat per-wick pricing · all figures declared
Vanilla candles a month Cotton Braided spend a month Extra over C2 a month Extra a year Stock it?
25 ₹300.00 ₹64.00 ₹768.00 buy per batch; a stocked SKU is optional
50 ₹600.00 ₹128.00 ₹1,536.00 stock it, small safety stock
100 ₹1,200.00 ₹256.00 ₹3,072.00 stock it, small safety stock
200 ₹2,400.00 ₹512.00 ₹6,144.00 stock it with a reorder point
400 ₹4,800.00 ₹1,024.00 ₹12,288.00 stock it with a reorder point

Put the step in proportion. At production prices, 16 g of Dark Vanilla costs ₹122.34 and 16 g of Lavender ₹83.54: a vanilla candle already carries ₹38.80 more oil than a lavender one. The wick step adds ₹2.56, about 6.6% of that oil gap. If vanilla is worth selling at its oil cost, the wick will not change the decision. Price the vanilla candle with its own wick in its own cost line.

Two wicks in one jar: keep them apart on the bench
A C2 and a Cotton Braided look different enough in the hand, but not at the end of a long pour. Keep them in separate labelled bins, write the wick on each oil's batch sheet ("Dark Vanilla · 8% · Cotton Braided"), and mark vanilla bases before pouring. A lavender candle poured on Cotton Braided by mistake is an untested candle.

When to stock it, and when to buy per batch

Our judgement, labelled: if vanilla is a regular monthly line, make Cotton Braided a stocked SKU with its own reorder point. If vanilla is seasonal (a Diwali batch, a wedding order), skip the shelf: buy the batch count plus a small allowance after approval. A 40-candle batch with 5% is 42 wicks: the 50-pack (₹600.00) or five 10-packs (₹600.00), the same price either way, so take the 50 if the extra wicks will be used by the next batch.

Don't move lavender to Cotton Braided "to keep one wick": at 140 lavender candles a month it adds ₹358.40 before you sell one vanilla candle, and lavender has not been tested on it. A light oil on a bigger wick commonly runs hotter: a deeper pool, a taller flame, more heat near the base. Argued against our own interest: we would sell you more Cotton Braided; keep lavender on C2. Whether one oil's odd wick is worth reformulating away is the stock-it-or-reformulate post.

Two wicks, one jar: the production order

Each wick is ordered for the oils approved on it, and for nothing else.

Wicks of a size = candles of the oils on that size × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance). In the worked example you sell 140 lavender and 60 vanilla candles a month, with a 5% allowance for rejects and retests (our figure):

Worked example · one month · lavender on C2, vanilla on Cotton Braided
5% allowance · flat per-wick pricing · packs that add up to the need, nothing more
Wick Candles Wicks needed Wick cost Packs
Eco C2 140 lavender 147 ₹1,387.68 100 + 20 + 20 + 10 = ₹1,416.00
Cotton Braided 60 vanilla 63 ₹756.00 50 + 10 + 10 = ₹840.00
Two-SKU month 200 210 ₹2,143.68 —
For contrast: everything on Cotton Braided 200 210 ₹2,520.00 ₹376.32 more, and lavender untested on it

A reorder point is daily use × your lead time + safety stock. 63 Cotton Braided a month is about 2.1 a day; with a 10-day order-to-bench time (your figure; CSI publishes no lead times, so confirm dispatch on WhatsApp) and a week of safety stock (15 wicks), reorder when you are down to 36. Fifteen wicks of safety stock is ₹180.00 sitting on a shelf: small money, and the reason a cheap wick deserves generous cover once approved. Per-size reorder points across several wicks are the reorder-point post; splitting quantities by sales mix in detail is the two-wick quantity post.

One last check before the big order: the approval belongs to Dark Vanilla in this jar, CSI 464 and 8%. A different vanilla, a new jar batch, a move to 10%, or a new wick supplier each send vanilla back for at least a confirm test (replacement wicks across fragrance types). The oud family has its own version of this decision: can one up-rung serve every oud?.

What to buy for the vanilla rung, and what to skip

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data for any oil, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Candle counts use 16 g per 200 g candle and 12 g per 150 g candle.

wick · the one extra rung
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The rung above C2, and the only purchase this problem needs. CSI sells three sized, tabbed wicks (Eco C1, Eco C2 and this one), so "one size up" from C2 is Cotton Braided: there is nothing in between. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and claims "preventing tunneling" (its claim, not a result we have measured); it gives one dimension, "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm". Limitation: it is a big step. If it runs hot for vanilla, CSI has no single tabbed wick between it and C2.

It states no vanillin percentage in the text we captured. Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026; per gram it falls from ₹8.67 at 15 g to ₹7.65 at 1 kg. Priced the same as Dark Vanilla at every size, and its page states a vanillin figure where Dark Vanilla's says only "Vanillin present": "Vanillin Content: 2.5% (Potential discoloration; test with lighter waxes or consider adding color stabilizers)" (CSI does not currently list a colour stabiliser). It states "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Cure Time: 48–72 hours for soy wax". It is not a fix for a tunnel: a result on Dark Vanilla does not carry to it, and choosing between vanillas is the vanilla-choice post. Eco Braided Wicks and the Braided Wick Roll: unsized, cut to length; an experiment for later, not a rung. Any 100-pack of Cotton Braided before full life.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 38 days from 1 October 2026. A vanilla test poured this week and cured for a few days can pass burn 3 by mid-October and finish the full life in the weeks after. If vanilla is in your Diwali range, send us the approved wick and counts: we will quote Cotton Braided, C2 and Dark Vanilla with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Change the wick for the oil that failed, not for the oils that passed.
₹530.00 tests the up-rung for vanilla. If it wins, vanilla carries ₹2.56 a candle more and lavender stays where it passed. Stock the second wick only for the volume that uses it.
"Lavender already told you its wick. Let vanilla tell you its own."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oils and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to buy the 50 g bottle, not the 100 g, to keep lavender on the cheaper wick, that bigger tabbed packs save nothing per wick, and that we sell nothing between C2 and Cotton Braided.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and flagged; every other size offered is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The 8.0 cm jar, the 200 g fill, the screening thresholds, the 5% allowance, the monthly volumes, the 10-day lead time and the stock-it rule are our judgement or worked examples; melt-pool times, depths and flame heights are commonly cited rules of thumb; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my vanilla candle tunnel when lavender doesn't?
With the jar, wax, load and wick unchanged, the oil is what differs. Heavier and vanillin-rich oils such as vanilla are commonly linked to a smaller flame and a slower edge than lavender on the same wick. It is a tendency, so confirm it on two or more candles before you change anything.
Does vanilla fragrance oil need a bigger wick?
Often, but not always. Test one rung up for vanilla only (with CSI wicks, Cotton Braided above Eco C2), three candles, through the full life, and keep the rest of your range where it passed.
Can I use different wicks for different scents in the same jar?
Yes, and it is common: the wick is approved for a jar, wax, oil and load together. Record which wick goes with which oil so production never mixes them up.
How much more does a bigger wick cost per candle?
With CSI wicks, Cotton Braided is ₹12.00 and Eco C2 ₹9.44 at every pack size: ₹2.56 a candle. At 100 vanilla candles a month that is ₹256.00 a month.
Should I switch all my candles to the bigger wick to keep things simple?
Not without testing each oil on it. A light oil on a bigger wick commonly burns hotter, and every candle costs ₹2.56 more. Two wicks matched to the oils that passed on them is usually the cheaper and safer stock.
How many test candles do I need to approve a new wick for vanilla?
Three on the new wick, poured in one batch and burned to about 1 cm left. A 50 g bottle of Dark Vanilla covers three 200 g candles at 8% (48 g).
Your vanilla-only wick order
Cotton Braided 10 + Dark Vanilla 50 g = ₹530.00: one rung up, for the oil that failed.
Check the tunnel is real, pour three vanilla candles on Cotton Braided with one lavender control on C2, screen at burn 3 and approve on the full life. Send us your jar's inside diameter on WhatsApp and we will check the order before you pay.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on fragrance changing the wick (5521–5540): the purchase that follows when lavender passes and vanilla tunnels in the same jar and wax: a no-cost check that the oil is the variable, the up-rung order (Cotton Braided × 3 with Dark Vanilla), a costed four-candle test, what each result buys next, the per-candle and monthly cost of the extra rung, the stock-it-or-buy-per-batch rule and the two-wick production order.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 200 g fill and 8.0 cm inside diameter are labelled assumptions; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%; Dark Vanilla 6–10% in candles): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about 3–4 hours; about an hour per 2.5 cm), depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and flame height (about 2.5–5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. The monthly volumes, 5% allowance, 10-day lead time, safety stock and stock-it thresholds are editorial judgement and worked examples. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
