I Want to Launch Five Reed Diffuser Fragrances — Should I Buy One Compatible Base in Bulk or Use Different Bases for Different Fragrance Families?
Share
Does splitting cost more per bottle? Only for Longevity: ₹14.18 more per 45 ml bottle at 20%. Lift, Depth and Softness cost the same as Pure Performance, ₹1,099.00 per 500 ml.
So what does a split cost? Stock and records: 39 bottles across 4 bases instead of 36 of one (example month), a reserve and retained sample per base, and a test per pairing.
How do I decide? A 30-bottle screen: each fragrance in the universal base and its page-assigned base, three bottles each, 30 days. ₹12,723.50 in CSI materials. See the kit.
One base or five: the short answer
For a five-fragrance launch, the default that keeps cost, testing and stock simplest is one compatible base for all five, bought in the size your first three months need — with a short, written test that gives each fragrance the chance to prove it needs a different one. You only split when the test says so, and when you do split, you split once, for the fragrances that clearly behave differently, not into five bases because five pages exist.
That advice has a specific shape on CSI's shelf. Five reed diffuser bases are in stock, and their product pages differ mainly in what they say each base is for. Pure Performance Base describes itself as neutral and suitable for all fragrance families. Lift Base lists floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Softness Base soft florals, powdery and light gourmand notes; Depth Base chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand notes such as coffee; Longevity Base amber, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand families, and it tells you to avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics. CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ is out of stock and not part of any plan here.
Those page assignments are claims to test, not results. CSI publishes no composition, evaporation rate or throw measurement for any of them, and we will not tell you that a family base outperforms the universal one for your oil. What the pages do give you is a sensible test design: for each of your five fragrances, compare the universal base against the base its family is assigned to, and let the bottles decide. The rest of this page builds that test for a concrete five-oil range, prices it, and shows what a split really costs you each month.
| SKU | Family | Universal candidate | Page-assigned candidate | Why that base (page wording) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | Soft floral | Pure Performance | Softness Base | Softness page names lavender |
| Citrus Lemon | Fresh citrus | Pure Performance | Lift Base | Lift page names lemon; Longevity page says avoid fresh citrus |
| Blue Ocean | Aquatic | Pure Performance | Lift Base | Longevity page: avoid aquatics — "use Lift Base" |
| Woody Oud | Woody / oud | Pure Performance | Longevity Base | Longevity page names woody and resinous; warns oud can cloud at maximum load |
| Roasted Coffee | Rich gourmand | Pure Performance | Depth Base | Depth page names coffee |
Your five will be different; the method is not. Two notes on the page wording. First, the assignments overlap: both Lift and Softness name jasmine and rose, so a rose or jasmine SKU has three candidates, not two. Second, the Longevity page is the only one that names families to avoid. That makes Longevity the base most likely to be wrong for part of a mixed range and right for another part, which is exactly the situation in which a second base in stock can be justified. Whether lavender, jasmine, vanilla and coffee can share one base explores the four-family version of this question; this page is about the buying decision.
What a split actually costs per bottle
Less than you might expect — with one exception. Four of the five bases cost ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml, ₹2.20 per ml, so swapping Pure Performance for Lift, Depth or Softness changes nothing on the invoice. Only Longevity is dearer, at ₹1,296.00 for 500 ml, ₹2.59 per ml. In a 45 ml fill at 20% — 9 g of oil and 36 g of base at an example density of 1.00 g per ml — Longevity adds ₹14.18 to each bottle compared with any of the others.
| SKU | Oil rate | In Pure Performance | In assigned base | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | ₹5.22/g | ₹126.12 | ₹126.12 (Softness) | ₹0.00 |
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2.83/g | ₹104.62 | ₹104.62 (Lift) | ₹0.00 |
| Blue Ocean | ₹4.96/g | ₹123.73 | ₹123.73 (Lift) | ₹0.00 |
| Woody Oud | ₹4.53/g | ₹119.91 | ₹134.09 (Longevity) | +₹14.18 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹3.74/g | ₹112.77 | ₹112.77 (Depth) | ₹0.00 |
So a decision to split is not a price decision except for the woody/oud SKU, and even there the ₹14.18 difference is smaller than a single reed. The real costs of splitting sit elsewhere: in testing (each base-and-oil pairing is a formula to qualify), in stock (each base needs its own reserve), in rounding (five half-used bottles instead of one), and in consistency (each base is a separate lot to track). Standardising one load or optimising each SKU is the twin of this decision on the fragrance side, and the same logic applies there.
The two-arm screen for five fragrances
The screen pairs each fragrance with the universal base and with its page-assigned base. Load, fill, bottle, reed count, reed pack, room and schedule are identical. The load is 20%, the figure CSI's Pure Performance page recommends and inside the 10–30% every base page states. Three bottles per cell is a labelled working practice for a screen. Thirty bottles sounds a lot; in 50 ml bottles it is three packs of ten and well under a litre and a half of liquid.
| Cell | Bottles | Oil | Base | Per bottle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–3 | Lavender | Pure Performance | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 2 | 4–6 | Lavender | Softness | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 3 | 7–9 | Citrus Lemon | Pure Performance | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 4 | 10–12 | Citrus Lemon | Lift | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 5 | 13–15 | Blue Ocean | Pure Performance | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 6 | 16–18 | Blue Ocean | Lift | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 7 | 19–21 | Woody Oud | Pure Performance | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 8 | 22–24 | Woody Oud | Longevity | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 9 | 25–27 | Roasted Coffee | Pure Performance | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| 10 | 28–30 | Roasted Coffee | Depth | 9 g oil + 36 g base |
| Measure | Arm 1 (Pure Performance) | Arm 2 (assigned base) | Which arm wins on this line? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity at 0 h / 48 h / 7 days / cool night | ___ / ___ / ___ / ___ | ___ / ___ / ___ / ___ | A haze is a fail for that arm |
| Mean blind score, day 1 / 7 / 14 / 30 | ___ / ___ / ___ / ___ | ___ / ___ / ___ / ___ | Win = higher by your stated margin at day 14 and 30 |
| Mean g/day over 30 days | ___ | ___ | Neither: report it; it sets cost per day |
| Projected days of life (fill g ÷ g/day) | ___ | ___ | Longer is better only if the score holds |
| Reed tips at day 30 (photo): colour, stickiness | ___ | ___ | Darker, sticky tips flag a heavy residue |
| Liquid cost per bottle | (from the cost table) | (from the cost table) | Cost per day of use = cost ÷ days |
Decide the winning margin before the first score — for example, that the assigned base must beat the universal one by at least half a point on your scale at both day 14 and day 30, with every bottle clear, and with cost per day of use no worse. A tie goes to the universal base, because it keeps your stock simpler. Comparing two bases on evaporation, throw, clarity, reed compatibility and cost per bottle goes deeper on the two-base comparison, and the compatibility tests to run before buying 5 kg covers the clarity side.
The priced screen
Listed, in-stock CSI packs only, with a 5% working allowance on liquids. Base volumes are converted from grams at the example density of 1.00 g per ml. If your budget only stretches to one arm now, run the universal arm first — it is the arm you hope will win — and add the assigned bases only for fragrances that disappoint.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|

| Depth Base | 113.4 ml | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,099.00 |

| Blue Ocean | 56.7 g | 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹340.22 |
| Woody Oud | 56.7 g | 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹364.62 |
| Roasted Coffee | 56.7 g | 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹323.22 |
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 50 ml | 30 bottles | 3 × pack of 10 | ₹2,478.00 |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (White) | 180 + 6 spare | 2 × pack of 100 | ₹1,800.00 |
| Full two-arm screen | ₹12,723.50 | ||
| Universal arm only (15 bottles) | ₹6,404.50 |
The base lines dominate because every specialist base comes only in 500 ml and the screen uses barely a fifth of each bottle. That leftover is not waste if the base wins — it becomes the first production lot — but it is money tied up if it loses. That is the honest cost of finding out, and it is the main reason to run the universal arm first if cash is tight. The Pure Performance 100 g at ₹325.00 is the only smaller base size CSI lists; at this fill a three-bottle cell needs 108 g of base, so the 100 g is too small for a full cell and the 500 ml is the practical screen size.
What splitting does to monthly stock
Suppose each fragrance sells an example 100 bottles a month — your figure goes here, not ours. At 36 ml of base per bottle, the five SKUs use 18,000 ml of base a month. Bought as one base, that is 36 bottles of 500 ml. Split across the page-assigned bases, the same volume becomes 39 bottles across 4 bases, because each one rounds up separately.
| Line | One base (Pure Performance) | Split across 4 bases | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base used per month | 18,000 ml | 18,000 ml | Nothing |
| 500 ml bottles to buy | 36 | 8 Softness + 15 Lift + 8 Longevity + 8 Depth = 39 | +3 bottles from rounding |
| Monthly base spend | ₹39,564.00 | ₹44,437.00 | +₹4,873.00 |
| Leftover after the month | 0 ml | 1,500 ml | Tied-up stock, partly opened |
| Minimum on hand (1 open + 1 sealed reserve per base — example practice) | ₹2,198.00 | ₹9,186.00 | +₹6,988.00 of reserve stock |
| Lots to track, retain and reorder | 1 | 4 | Separate retained sample and record per base |
The spend difference is mostly rounding: 3 extra bottles bought because each base rounds up on its own, leaving 1,500 ml opened or spare at month end, plus ₹1,576.00 for Longevity's higher price on the woody SKU. Leftover carries into next month, so rounding is chiefly cash tied up rather than money lost. The stock and record-keeping difference is not: 4 bases means 4 reorder points, 4 reserves, 4 retained samples and 4 chances of running out of the base one fragrance depends on. CSI publishes no lead times, so a reserve is your protection, and every base multiplies it. Calculating monthly wholesale requirements against sales and lead times turns this into a reorder plan, and 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg of base deals with buying size — remember CSI lists 500 ml (and 100 g for Pure Performance) only; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp with no published discount.
The decision rule, fragrance by fragrance
Apply it separately to each SKU after day 30, then count how many bases you actually need.
| If this is true for a fragrance | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Universal arm passes clarity and meets your score line | One base works for it | Keep it on Pure Performance |
| Universal arm hazes; assigned arm stays clear | A compatibility difference | Move that SKU to its assigned base |
| Both clear; assigned arm wins by your stated margin at days 14 and 30 | A performance difference | Move that SKU, if the margin is worth a second base |
| Both clear; scores tie | No reason to split | Keep the universal base |
| Both arms haze at this load | Load, not base | Load ladder for that fragrance — 20% vs 30% |
| Both pass but score below your line | Formula or reeds | Diagnose — the weak-throw hub |
Then count. Zero exceptions: one base, bought in 500 ml bottles to your monthly need. One or two exceptions that share an assigned base: two bases. Exceptions that point to three different bases: run a second round before you commit, because a range of five fragrances on four bases is a stock-control problem you will feel every month. And if one fragrance is the only reason for a whole extra base, ask whether that fragrance belongs in the launch at all — the three-fragrance trial batch makes the case for a smaller first range.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the TOTAL blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). No density is published for any CSI base or oil, so every ml ↔ g conversion uses a labelled example density with its ±5% sensitivity; weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours. Labelled examples: 45 ml fill in the 50 ml Gold bottle, density 1.00 g/ml, 20% load (the Pure Performance page's recommended figure), 6 white fibre reeds per bottle, three bottles per cell, 5% liquid allowance, 100 bottles per SKU per month, one open plus one sealed 500 ml reserve per base. Base-to-family assignments are quoted from CSI's product pages. What CSI's product pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all fragrance families, start at 10%, up to a maximum of 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours before bottling, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand families, avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, slower "cold diffusion", reduce the percentage if clouding occurs; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand; all four 10–30% with a 24–48 hour rest. Reed pages: 20.3 cm long; "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance" (the page's guidance, not a test result). CSI does not publish the composition, viscosity, density, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life of any diffuser base; no throw, longevity or evaporation data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; no IFRA percentage for any oil; no lead times and no bulk base price. No CSI base is ranked above another on this page: the pages differ in what they say each base is FOR, and those statements are claims to test. CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan, and does not sell DPG, Augeo, perfumer's alcohol or IPM. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
