How Much Reed Diffuser Base to Buy
CSI sells its bases in 500 ml (and Pure Performance in 100 g), at the same price per unit whether you buy one or fifty. So the real question is how many months of base a small business should hold — and for most starting out, that is about two units.
₹2,198.00
≈ 1 kg of Pure Performance Base (2 × 500 ml at a 1.00 g/ml example) — about 31 bottles of 50 ml at 20% · CSI live pricing, 14 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Does CSI sell 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg of base? No. Bases are listed in 500 ml (₹1,099.00 for Pure Performance) and Pure Performance also in 100 g (₹325.00). Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount is published.

How many 500 ml units is that? About 2, 10 and 50 at an example 1.00 g/ml; 3, 11 and 53 at 0.95 g/ml. Weigh 100 ml of your base to know.

Which should a small business buy? About 1 kg (₹2,198.00) — 31 bottles of 50 ml, 1–2 months at 20–30 bottles a month. Move to 5 kg at 50–100 a month.

Is bigger cheaper? Not on listed prices: every 500 ml unit costs the same. The only size step is 100 g → 500 ml, which saves ₹33.62 per bottle of liquid here. See the stage ladder.
The short answer
Answer: For a small business starting out, about 1 kg — two 500 ml units, ₹2,198.00 of Pure Performance. CSI does not list 1, 5 or 25 kg; it lists 500 ml (and 100 g) at the same per-unit price at any quantity.
Why: With no per-unit saving and no published shelf life, the deciding numbers are months of cover and whether every fragrance already works in that base.
Method: Convert kg to 500 ml with your measured density, divide into bottles, divide by monthly sales for months of cover, and run a fresh/opened/sealed storage check before holding more than a month or two.
How long 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg of base lasts a small business Months of cover · 50 ml bottles at 40 g (example) · 20% load = 32 g base per bottle · example sales rates 20 bottles / month 50 bottles / month 100 bottles / month 250 bottles / month 1 kg of base ≈ 2 × 500 ml · 31 bottles 1.6 months 0.6 months 0.3 months 0.1 months 5 kg of base ≈ 10 × 500 ml · 156 bottles 7.8 months 3.1 months 1.6 months 0.6 months 25 kg of base ≈ 50 × 500 ml · 781 bottles 39.1 months 15.6 months 7.8 months 3.1 months under 1.5 months 1.5–6 6–12 over 12 months CSI publishes no shelf life for any base. Until you know yours, the darker cells are stock you are betting will not change in storage — and money that is not buying bottles, reeds or new fragrances. Pick the pale-to-mid cells for your sales rate.

Straight answer
Should I buy 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg of reed diffuser base when starting a small fragrance business in India?
For a small business starting out, about 1 kg — and on CSI that means two 500 ml units. CSI lists its reed diffuser bases in 500 ml, and Pure Performance Base also in 100 g; there is no 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg listing. At an example density of 1.00 g/ml, 1 kg ≈ 2 units (₹2,198.00), 5 kg ≈ 10 (₹10,990.00) and 25 kg ≈ 50 (₹54,950.00) — and the per-unit price is the same at every quantity on the listed catalogue; larger orders are quoted on WhatsApp with no published discount. So decide by months of cover: in a 50 ml bottle at 40 g and 20%, 1 kg fills about 31 bottles, 5 kg about 156 and 25 kg about 781. At 20 bottles a month, 25 kg is 39 months of stock with no published shelf life. Test with 100 g, start selling on 1 kg, move to 5 kg at 50–100 bottles a month after a storage check, and ask for a 25 kg quote only at 250+.
One line: same price per unit at every size — so buy by months of cover, and start with two units of 500 ml.
CSI does not list 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg of base. Pure Performance Base comes in 100 g (₹325.00) and 500 ml (₹1,099.00); the other bases in 500 ml only. So "1 kg" is about two 500 ml units, "5 kg" about ten and "25 kg" about fifty at an example 1.00 g/ml — and for a small business starting out, the 1 kg-equivalent (₹2,198.00) is usually the right first stock.
See Pure Performance Base

First, translate kilograms into what CSI actually sells

You asked in kilograms. The base is sold in millilitres. The bridge between them is a number nobody has published.

CSI's Reed & Car Diffuser Base collection lists every in-stock base in 500 ml, and Pure Performance also in 100 g. There is no 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg listing. To compare your three quantities with what you can order, convert kilograms to millilitres with the base's density — which CSI does not publish for any base. With a labelled example of 1.00 g/ml, one kilogram is 1,000 ml, two units of 500 ml. If your base turns out lighter, a kilogram takes more millilitres; heavier, fewer.

Which base to hold is the base pillar which reed diffuser base to buy in India; how base stock fits a growing business is the pillar how to start a profitable reed diffuser business in India. This page answers only how much to hold.

1 kg, 5 kg and 25 kg in 500 ml units
You asked for At 0.95 g/ml At 1.00 g/ml At 1.05 g/ml Listed-pack price at 1.00 g/ml
1 kg 1,053 ml → 3 × 500 ml 1,000 ml → 2 × 500 ml 952 ml → 2 × 500 ml ₹2,198.00
5 kg 5,263 ml → 11 × 500 ml 5,000 ml → 10 × 500 ml 4,762 ml → 10 × 500 ml ₹10,990.00
25 kg 26,316 ml → 53 × 500 ml 25,000 ml → 50 × 500 ml 23,810 ml → 48 × 500 ml ₹54,950.00

Two things follow. First, buying "5 kg" from CSI means ordering about ten 500 ml units at the listed price — ₹10,990.00 — and "25 kg" about fifty, ₹54,950.00. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no volume discount is published, and we will not invent one. Second, the per-unit price does not change between one unit and fifty on the listed catalogue. So the question you are really asking is not "which size is cheaper per kilo" — on listed prices they are the same — but how much base should a small business hold. That depends on your stage, your sales rate and what you know about how the base keeps.

The one place size changes the price
Pure Performance's 100 g costs ₹3.25 a gram; its 500 ml costs ₹2.20 a millilitre. Without the density you cannot compare them per gram, but you can find the break-even: the 500 ml is cheaper per gram for any density above 0.676 g/ml. At the 1.00 g/ml example it is ₹2.20 a gram — about a third less than the 100 g. Buy the 100 g to test, the 500 ml to sell.

What each quantity makes, in bottles

Quantities only mean something in bottles. This page uses a 50 ml Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle filled to 40 g (a labelled example — the bottle's fill line is not published) at 20% load: 8 g of oil and 32 g of base per bottle. If your bottle or fill is different, divide your base grams per bottle into the quantities the same way.

32 g of base per bottle · 20% load · 40 g fill · example
Bottles per quantity of base
Base Bottles at 20% Bottles at 25% Oil needed alongside (20%)
100 g (Pure Performance) 3.1 3.3 25.0 g
1 kg (≈ 2 × 500 ml) 31 33 0.25 kg
5 kg (≈ 10 × 500 ml) 156 167 1.25 kg
25 kg (≈ 50 × 500 ml) 781 833 6.25 kg

A kilogram of base fills about 31 bottles of this size; five kilograms about 156; twenty-five kilograms about 781. Each also needs the oil beside it — 6.25 kg for the 25 kg — and that oil is bought separately, in its own sizes, with the same rule that above 100 g most CSI oils are priced almost linearly per gram. A 25 kg base decision is really a 780-bottle decision, with bottles, reeds and several kilos of oil attached. Base for 100 bottles of 100 ml at 20% walks through the bottle-to-base sum in detail.

Months of cover: the number that should decide

A kilogram is not a size. For a business, it is a number of months — and the months are what you are really buying.

Divide bottles per quantity by bottles sold per month and you get months of cover. The rates below are labelled examples — put in your own. The diagram above shows the same grid shaded by how long the stock would sit.

Months of cover · example sales rates · 50 ml bottles at 20%
How long each quantity lasts
Base 20 / month 50 / month 100 / month 250 / month
1 kg 1.6 months 0.6 months 0.3 months 0.1 months
5 kg 7.8 months 3.1 months 1.6 months 0.6 months
25 kg 39.1 months 15.6 months 7.8 months 3.1 months

Read your row honestly. At 20 bottles a month — a realistic start for many small makers — 5 kg is 7.8 months of base and 25 kg is 39 months: over three years. At 250 bottles a month, 25 kg is 3.1 months, and holding it starts to make sense. Between those, 5 kg suits roughly 50–100 bottles a month. Nobody can tell you the right cover; but a business that cannot say how many bottles it sells per month is not ready for 25 kg.

The CSI principle
Buy base by months of cover, not by kilograms.
The kilogram number is the same price per unit at every size on CSI's listed catalogue. The months number tells you how long your money and your formula are locked in.

What nobody has told you: how the base keeps

CSI publishes no shelf life for any base, and no page says how a base behaves once opened. That is the real reason to be careful with 25 kg. If a base changes in storage — picks up moisture, changes colour, behaves differently with your oil — a month's stock is a small loss and two years' stock is a large one. We do not know that it does; we do not know that it does not. Ask CSI on WhatsApp whether a technical data sheet or SDS is available for the base you choose; we will not promise one.

You can, however, find out for your own base in your own store room, cheaply, before you commit to holding more. The test below compares blends made from the same base kept two ways for the time it takes you to use a unit: opened and used daily, and sealed. It changes one thing — storage — and keeps everything else fixed.

If W and S match C within the spread C1 and C2 show between themselves, your base kept for a month opened and sealed in your conditions, and 5 kg-equivalent stock at a month or two of cover is a reasonable bet. If W drifts and S does not, the base is fine but your storage is not — smaller units, tighter caps, a cooler place. If both drift, do not hold more than you use in a few weeks until you understand why. Testing reed diffuser performance over 30 days gives a fuller measurement plan.

The common mistake: buying 25 kg before the formula is fixed. A maker buys a large base stock, then finds that two of their five fragrances cloud in it, or that a different base suits their best seller. The base is now a cost with nothing to go into. Fix: hold large stock only of a base that has passed with every fragrance you will make in it, and only after a storage check.

The stage ladder: 100 g, then 1 kg, then 5 kg, then talk

How much base to hold at each stage

2 — steady Selling ~50–100 bottles a month ≈ 5 kg (10 × 500 ml) ₹10,990.00 Storage check passed; formula unchanged for two months
3 — volume Selling ~250+ bottles a month ≈ 25 kg (50 × 500 ml) — ask for a quote ₹54,950.00 at listed prices You can forecast monthly use and a supplier confirms availability

For a small business starting out — your words — the honest answer is stage 1. The 1 kg-equivalent costs ₹2,198.00, makes about 31 bottles of this size, and leaves cash for the things that sell a diffuser: bottles, reeds, more fragrances, labels. Move to 5 kg when you are reordering 1 kg every month or so and the storage check has passed. Consider 25 kg when your monthly use and your reorder time both say so — monthly wholesale requirements with lead times is the post for that calculation, and what to ask CSI before buying for commercial manufacturing covers the availability questions.

One more cost of a big base order: it fixes the base. If you hold 25 kg of Pure Performance, every new fragrance has to work in Pure Performance. Its page calls it neutral, with "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all fragrance families — which is exactly why it is a sensible stock base. The family bases — Lift, Longevity, Depth, Softness — are better held in smaller quantities alongside it, for fragrances that need them. Five fragrances: one base in bulk or several weighs that choice.

Does buying more base lower the bottle cost?
Stage Base rate Oil rate Liquid per bottle

1–3 — Pure Performance 500 ml + Blue Ocean 1 kg ₹2.20 / g at 1.00 g/ml ₹4.96 / g ₹109.98

The step from stage 0 to stage 1 saves ₹33.62 a bottle — almost all of it from moving the base from 100 g to 500 ml. From stage 1 to stage 3 the listed price does not move at all. That is the clearest sign that 25 kg is a stock decision, not a price decision, unless a WhatsApp quote changes the picture. Comparing base prices per kg shows how to compare such a quote with the listed 500 ml fairly.

On CSI's listed catalogue, 25 kg of base costs the same per unit as 1 kg. What changes is how long your money sits on a shelf.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A 25 kg order is fifty units — ₹54,950.00 at listed prices — and we would be glad to quote it. For a business selling twenty bottles a month it is about three years of base with no published shelf life behind it. Buy two units now. Ask us for a quote on twenty-five kilos when your monthly numbers justify it.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Frequently asked questions

How much reed diffuser base should I buy to start?
For most small starts, about 1 kg — two 500 ml units of CSI base (₹2,198.00 for Pure Performance), enough for about 31 bottles of 50 ml at 20%. Test first with 100 g.
Is reed diffuser base cheaper in bulk?

How many ml is 1 kg of reed diffuser base?
It depends on the base's density, which CSI does not publish. At an example 1.00 g/ml it is 1,000 ml; at 0.95 g/ml about 1,053 ml. Weigh 100 ml of your base to find out.
What is the shelf life of reed diffuser base?
CSI publishes no shelf life for any base. Ask on WhatsApp whether a technical sheet is available, and run your own storage check before holding more than a month or two of stock.
How many reed diffusers can I make from 5 kg of base?
About 156 bottles of 50 ml filled to 40 g at 20% load, at an example density. For 100 ml fills at 20%, about 62.
Does CSI sell reed diffuser base in 25 kg drums?
No 25 kg listing exists. Fifty 500 ml units is the listed equivalent; ask on WhatsApp for a quote on larger quantities.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)). Reader's figures: 1 kg, 5 kg, 25 kg. Labelled examples: 1.00 g/ml base density with 0.95/1.05 sensitivity; 40 g fill in a 50 ml bottle; 20% load; 6 reeds; 20, 50, 100 and 250 bottles a month; a 28-day storage interval; stage thresholds; 5% allowance in the kit. The Pure Performance break-even density is ₹1,099 ÷ 500 ml ÷ ₹3.25 per g = 0.676 g/ml. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base gives a 10% starting load, 20% recommended, 30% maximum, of total blend, and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance adds a typical working blend of 75% base + 25% fragrance and the example "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil" (by volume); Longevity says to avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, and "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest". The reed pages give a 20.3 cm length and "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds"; reed diameter is not published. The bottle listing's text says "50 and 100ml" while its variants are 50 ml and 120 ml; neck size, fill line and any reducer are not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, no IFRA percentage for any oil, and no diffusion, throw or longevity measurement for any base, oil or reed. Every ml-to-gram conversion here uses a labelled example density with ±5% sensitivity; every grams-per-day figure is a labelled example for the arithmetic, never a measurement. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
