Reed Diffuser Bases × The Two-Base Scorecard
Clarity is a gate, not a score. Throw, life, reed condition and cost per day are scores, weighted by what your product needs. Write the weights first, run both bases identically, and call a small difference a tie.
₹4,674.80
CSI materials for a two-base comparison — Softness and Lift 500 ml, British Rose, ten 120 ml bottles, black fibre reeds · CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I compare two reed diffuser bases fairly? Change only the base. Same oil, load, bottle, fill, reeds, room and flip time; four bottles per base plus a base-only blank.

Is clarity part of the score? No — it is a gate. A base that hazes with your oil is out, whatever its throw. Score only the bases that pass.

How do I compare cost? Per day, not per bottle: liquid ₹ ÷ days of life (fill ÷ g/day). Two bases at one ₹/ml can differ per gram if their densities differ — weigh 100 ml of each.

What does the comparison cost? ₹4,674.80 in CSI materials for Softness vs Lift with British Rose in ten 120 ml bottles. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Gate both bases on clarity (0 h, 48 h, 7 days, a cool night), then score throw, life, reed condition and cost per day on 0–5 scales, weight them as you decided beforehand, and add up. Differences inside your bottle-to-bottle spread are ties.
Why: Each criterion is measured differently; cost per bottle means little without days of life; and a hazy base must never win on throw. CSI publishes no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base.
Method: Two arms of four 120 ml bottles plus a blank each, 25% by weight, 7 reeds; weights on days 0–14, blind room scores on days 1, 7, 14, reed photos on days 3, 7, 14.
Two bases, five criteria: one gate and four weighted scores Same oil, load, bottle, reeds and room · weights are an example — set yours before day 0 Criterion How it is measured Base A Base B Clarity must pass to be scored GATE · pass or fail 0 h · 48 h · 7 d · cool night ✓ / ✗ ✓ / ✗ Throw weight 35% blind room score, 0–5 days 1, 7, 14 at 1 m and 3 m 0–5 0–5 Evaporation / life weight 25% fill ÷ g/day vs target weights days 0–14 0–5 0–5 Reed compatibility weight 15% tips, stickiness, flip response photos days 3, 7, 14 0–5 0–5 Cost per day weight 25% liquid ₹ ÷ days of life your prices, your density 0–5 0–5 Weighted total = Σ (weight × score) for bases that passed the gate. The two-base scorecard. Clarity is a pass-or-fail gate; only bases that pass are scored on throw, evaporation and life, reed compatibility and cost per day, each weighted by figures you set before the test. The weights shown are an example.
Straight answer
How do I compare two reed diffuser bases using evaporation rate, fragrance throw, clarity, reed compatibility and cost per bottle?
Run both bases with everything else identical, gate them on clarity, and score the other four criteria on a weighted card you wrote before the test. Same oil, load by weight, bottle, fill, reeds, room and flip time; four bottles per base plus a base-only blank. Clarity is pass or fail — at 0 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night — and a base that hazes is out. Then: throw as a blind 0–5 room score on days 1, 7 and 14; evaporation as weighed grams per day, turned into days of life against your target; reed compatibility as a 0–5 grade from tip photographs, stickiness and flip response; and cost per day as liquid cost ÷ days of life. Multiply by your weights and add; a gap smaller than the spread between bottles of one base is a tie. Two CSI bases that both name rose — Softness Base and Lift Base, both ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml — make a fair pair; the kit is ₹4,674.80.
One line: clarity gates, the scorecard decides, a tie means buy either — or neither.
Two CSI bases both name rose on their pages — Softness Base (soft florals: lavender, jasmine, rose, peony) and Lift Base (florals, citrus, green, fruity, with rose listed) — and both cost ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml. That makes them a fair pair for a side-by-side, because the pages cannot separate them and the price cannot either. One 500 ml of each runs this whole comparison.

One scorecard, five criteria, decided before day 0

Comparing two bases is easy. Comparing them fairly means deciding what "better" means before you smell either.

Every criterion in your question can be measured with a scale, a camera, a room and a calculator — but they do not all count the same, and some are not scores at all. Clarity is a gate, not a score: a base that clouds with your oil is out, however well it diffuses, so it never enters the weighted total. Throw is a blind room score. Evaporation is grams lost per day, which turns into days of life against the life you want to sell. Reed compatibility is what happens at the reeds: how fast they wet, how the tips look and feel by day 14, whether flipping revives the room. Cost per bottle is arithmetic — but the version that matters is cost per day of fragrance, which needs the evaporation figure too.

So the straight answer is: run both bases with the same oil, load, bottle, reeds and room; gate them on clarity at 0 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night; then score throw, life, reed condition and cost per day on 0–5 scales, multiply by weights you wrote down before the test, and add them up. A difference smaller than the spread between bottles of the same base is a tie. This page builds that scorecard step by step, prices a two-base comparison in one pack of 120 ml bottles, and shows the scorecard arithmetic with illustrative figures for a Base X and a Base Y — deliberately not CSI bases, because CSI publishes no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base and we will not invent any.

What each criterion means on this page · measured by you · no CSI data exists for any of them
The five criteria, how each is measured, and what turns it into a score
Criterion Measurement When Becomes a score by
Clarity (gate) Blend and base-only blank against white and black cards 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days, after a cool night Pass or fail — not weighted
Throw Blind 0–5 room score at 1 m and 3 m, 30 minutes after entering Days 1, 7, 14 Average of all readings, already 0–5
Evaporation / life Bottle + reeds weighed at the same hour Days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14 Days of life (fill ÷ g/day) ÷ your target days × 5, capped at 5
Reed compatibility Time for tips to look wet; tip photos; stickiness; room score after a flip First 6 h; days 3, 7, 14 Your 0–5 reed grade (example below)
Cost per day Liquid ₹ per bottle ÷ days of life From the weights Cheapest ÷ this base's × 5
The CSI principle
A base that clouds is not a low score. It is a fail.
Gate first, then score. Mixing a pass/fail property into a weighted total lets a hazy base win on throw — which no customer looking at a clear glass bottle will forgive.

Set up a fair comparison

Fairness is about holding everything except the base still. Same oil, from one bottle. Same load by weight — here 25%, the "typical working blend" Pure Performance's page gives (75% base + 25% fragrance), within the 10–30% both candidate pages state; check the oil's IFRA limit for the category covering reed diffusers before selling at it. Same bottle and fill: an example 100 g in CSI's 120 ml bottle, so 25 g of oil and 75 g of base per bottle. Same reed type, count and batch: 7 black fibre reeds from one pack. Same room, same shelf, same flip schedule, same evaluators.

10 bottles · one pack of 120 ml · 100 g at 25% British Rose · 7 black fibre reeds per reeded bottle
Two arms, four reeded bottles and a blank each
Bottles Base Contents Purpose
A1–A4 Softness Base 25 g oil + 75 g base, 7 reeds Arm A
AX Softness Base 100 g base only, 7 reeds Base blank: clarity, odour, base-only weight loss
B1–B4 Lift Base 25 g oil + 75 g base, 7 reeds Arm B
BX Lift Base 100 g base only, 7 reeds Base blank

Four bottles per arm, rather than three, matters here because you are going to compare averages and you need to know how far bottles of the same base differ from each other. That spread is your noise. If A's four bottles lose between 1.5 and 2.1 g a day and B's lose between 1.7 and 2.3, the bases are not different on evaporation in any way you can claim. The base-only blanks do two jobs: they let you smell each base on its own, and their weight loss shows how much of each arm's loss is the carrier rather than the fragrance — the question liquid disappears quickly but the room still smells weak is built around.

1
Write the scorecard before you mixYour weights (example here: throw 35%, life 25%, reeds 15%, cost per day 25%), your target life (example 45 days), your house room-score scale and your reed grade. Sign and date it. Do not change it after you have smelled anything.
2
Mix each base's batch by weight and gate on clarityOn the Weighing Scale, 300 g base + 100 g oil per arm; stir; check against white and black cards at 0 h, 24 h and 48 h (the pages' rest). Pour the blanks. Any arm that hazes is out — record it and stop that arm.
3
Fill, reed, weigh: day 0100 g per bottle by weight, 7 reeds each, bottles numbered on the base. Note how long the reed tips take to look wet in each arm. Flip all reeds at one agreed time — the pages give "after the first hour" for Pure Performance and 2–3 hours for Longevity; for these two, pick one time and use it for both.
4
Weigh on days 1, 3, 7 and 14; score on days 1, 7 and 14Same hour, room temperature recorded. Blind scoring: a helper codes and places one bottle at a time; you score at 1 m and 3 m after 30 minutes, fresh air between bottles.
5
Photograph and grade the reeds on days 3, 7 and 14Lift one reed from each bottle, photograph the tip on a white card, feel for stickiness, put it back. On day 14 flip one bottle per arm and score the room again an hour later: a big jump after flipping means the reed surface had stopped releasing well.
Example reed grade — YOURS, not an industry standard
Turning reed observations into a 0–5 score
Grade Tips at day 14 Feel Flip response
5 Like day 3 Dry to the touch above the liquid Little change — release was steady
4 Slightly darker Dry Small rise
3 Visibly darker at the tip Faintly tacky Noticeable rise
2 Dark band spreading down Tacky Large rise — tips were blocking
1 Dark and glossy Sticky Large rise, then falls again within days
0 Crusted or blocked Sticky No response
The common mistake: changing two things because "each base has its own recommended load". It is tempting to run each base at the figure on its page. But Softness and Lift both state 10–30% and neither gives a single recommendation, and even when pages differ, comparing two bases at two loads tells you about neither. Fix: one load for both arms. If you want to know each base's best load, run a load ladder inside each base afterwards — comparing 18%, 20% and 22% loads shows how.

Cost per bottle — and why two bases at one price can differ

Softness and Lift are both ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml, so it is natural to assume they cost the same per bottle. Per millilitre they do: ₹2.20. But a recipe written by weight uses grams, and the grams in 500 ml depend on the base's density, which CSI does not publish. Weigh 100 ml of each. To show the effect with illustrative figures — not measurements of any CSI base — suppose Base X weighs 97 g per 100 ml and Base Y 103 g. Then X costs ₹2.27 a gram and Y ₹2.13; in this bottle the base share is ₹169.95 against ₹160.05, and one 500 ml fills 6.47 bottles of X against 6.87 of Y.

Liquid at production rates · 100 g at 25% · British Rose at its 1 kg rate ₹3.07/g · base ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml at ILLUSTRATIVE densities
Same price per ml, different cost per bottle
Base X (illustrative 0.97 g/ml) Base Y (illustrative 1.03 g/ml)
Base ₹ per g ₹2.27 ₹2.13
Base in bottle ₹169.95 ₹160.05
Oil in bottle ₹76.70 ₹76.70
Liquid per bottle ₹246.65 ₹236.75
+ 120 ml bottle and 7 black reeds ₹408.85 ₹398.95
Bottles per 500 ml of base 6.47 6.87

Then the step that changes the answer: divide by days of life. Suppose — again illustrative, to show the arithmetic — Base X's bottles average 1.6 g a day and Base Y's 2.4 g. X lasts 62.5 days and costs ₹3.95 a day in liquid; Y lasts 41.7 days at ₹5.68 a day. The cheaper-per-bottle base is not automatically the cheaper product, and the faster-evaporating base is not automatically the stronger one: that is why throw is scored separately. Comparing base prices per kg with density, load and yield goes further into price per kilogram; is a more expensive base worth it at a lower load? runs the version of this sum where the two bases are priced differently.

The base you choose fixes the load's cost too · Softness Base at the example 1.00 g/ml · British Rose 1 kg rate
Liquid per bottle at three loads in one base
Load Oil Base Liquid per bottle
20% 20 g 80 g ₹237.20
25% 25 g 75 g ₹241.55
30% 30 g 70 g ₹245.90

Putting it together: the weighted scorecard

Write the weights first. Add the numbers last. Argue about neither in between.

With every reading in, convert each criterion to 0–5 as the criteria table says, multiply by its weight and add. The worked example below uses the illustrative Base X and Base Y figures from the cost section plus illustrative room scores (3.4 and 3.9) and reed grades (4 and 3), with a 45-day target life. It is there to show the arithmetic; it is not a result for Softness, Lift or any CSI base.

ILLUSTRATIVE — Base X and Base Y are not CSI bases · weights and 45-day target are examples · both passed the clarity gate
Weighted scorecard, worked
Criterion Weight Base X reading X score Base Y reading Y score
Clarity (gate) — Pass — Pass —
Throw 35% 3.4 avg 3.40 3.9 avg 3.90
Life 25% 62.5 days 5.00 41.7 days 4.63
Reeds 15% grade 4 4.00 grade 3 3.00
Cost per day 25% ₹3.95 5.00 ₹5.68 3.47
Weighted total 100% 4.29 3.84

In that illustration the totals are 4.29 and 3.84: X wins on life, reeds and cost per day; Y wins on throw. Whether 0.45 is a real difference depends on your spread — score each bottle separately and see whether the ranges overlap. Change the weights and the winner can change, which is exactly why you write them down first: a maker selling small-room bedside diffusers might weight life and cost most; a maker selling hotel-lobby pieces might weight throw at 50%. The most economical fragrance percentage applies the same logic to load rather than base.

Decide what a tie means
Before you start, write: "a difference of less than ___ in the weighted total, or overlapping bottle ranges on throw, is a tie." When the bases tie, the decision moves to things outside the scorecard: which base you can reorder reliably, which one your other oils also pass in, and which one is simpler to stock. With two bases at the same price, a tie is a perfectly good result — it means you can buy either.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. If Softness and Lift tie on your scorecard, you need one of them, not both — and if the base you already use ties with either, you need neither. Do not buy a second 500 ml because a page says it is "for" your family. The page tells you what the base was designed for; the scorecard tells you whether that design shows up in your bottle.

The priced comparison kit

Listed, in-stock CSI packs only, with a 5% liquid allowance. Each base needs 420.0 g for four bottles and a blank — one 500 ml at any density above 0.840 g per ml. British Rose for eight bottles at 25% is 210.0 g, bought as the cheapest mix of its 15 g, 50 g and 100 g sizes.

If you are comparing a CSI base with the base you already sell, replace one base line with yours. If the comparison is Pure Performance Base against another base, its 100 g packs cut the cost of that arm: four bottles and a blank need 1 × 500 ml (₹1,099.00).

Choosing a base for Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026 or the November–February wedding season? The clarity gate takes 48 hours and the 7-day readings fit before Diwali; the 14-day reed grade is tight; a 30-day life test does not fit. If you must decide early, decide on the gate, the day-7 throw and the day-7 g/day, and keep weighing to confirm. The decision rule

Working decision rule · apply after day 7 (and 14) · one action per line
From the scorecard to a purchase
If this is true It means Do this
One base fails the clarity gate It is out Buy the other — if it passed
Both fail the gate Neither pairs with this oil at this load Don't buy yet — step down 5 points or try another base
One base leads by more than your tie margin and bottle ranges do not overlap A real winner on your weights Buy the winner in 500 ml (₹1,099.00)
Totals within your tie margin A tie Buy the one your other oils also pass in; or the one you already stock
The winner loses on throw but wins on cost per day A cheaper, quieter product Check the throw still meets your house pass; if not, it has not really won
Your current base ties with both No reason to switch Buy nothing new; file the scorecard

Keep the scorecard. It is the reference for every later change: a new lot of base, a new oil, a new load or a new supplier is scored against it. Testing a new base supplier before replacing your bestseller uses exactly this sheet with your current base as arm A; the 30-day performance test extends the life measurement; and clarity tests before buying 5 kg adds the deeper compatibility checks before a bulk order. The pillar for the base decision is which reed diffuser base to buy in India, and the section closes with the commercial base selection framework.

Gate on clarity. Score the rest. Write the weights down before anyone smells a bottle.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. A base seller could publish a comparison chart. This page publishes none, because CSI has no throw, evaporation or longevity measurements for any base; it builds your scorecard instead, uses deliberately non-CSI Base X/Base Y figures to show the arithmetic, and tells you that a tie means you need only one base.

Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, base-pack count, per-bottle liquid cost, kit total and cost per day on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; density and grams-per-day figures are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.

Bottle counts per arm, the clarity checkpoints, the weighing schedule, the room-scoring scale and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 100 g fill, the 25% load, the weights, the 45-day target, the reed grade, the 0.97/1.03 g/ml densities and every Base X/Base Y reading are illustrative examples, not CSI data. Frequently asked questions

How do I test a reed diffuser base?
Mix it with your oil by weight, check clarity at 0 h, 48 h and 7 days, fill several bottles, weigh them on a schedule to get grams per day, score the room blind on days 1, 7 and 14, and photograph the reed tips. Compare against a control base set up identically.
How do I measure reed diffuser evaporation rate?
Weigh the bottle with its reeds at the same hour on days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14. Grams per day = (day-0 weight − today's weight) ÷ days. Days of life = fill weight ÷ grams per day.
How do I compare reed diffuser throw?
Blind: someone else codes and places one bottle at a time in the same room; you score 0–5 at fixed distances after a fixed time, with fresh air between bottles. Average several readings over days 1, 7 and 14.
Are two diffuser bases at the same price the same cost per bottle?
Not necessarily. They may cost the same per ml but differ per gram if their densities differ, and they may last different numbers of days. Weigh 100 ml of each and compare cost per day of use.
How many bottles do I need to compare reed diffuser bases?
Four per base plus a base-only blank is a practical screen: enough to see the spread between bottles of the same base. If the bases are close, test more bottles before deciding.
What if two reed diffuser bases perform the same?
Call it a tie and decide on things outside the scorecard — which base your other oils pass in, which you can reorder reliably, which you already stock. You need one, not both.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The gate-then-score method, reed grade, tie rule and decision rule apply to any two bases from any supplier; the products named are CSI's. Base X and Base Y are illustrative and are not CSI products or CSI measurements.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Example fill 100 g per 120 ml bottle at 25% = 25 g oil + 75 g base; one 500 ml of each base covers its arm at 0.840 g per ml or more. Illustrative densities 0.97 and 1.03 g per ml; illustrative readings 1.6 and 2.4 g/day, room scores 3.4 and 3.9, reed grades 4 and 3; example weights throw 35%, life 25%, reeds 15%, cost per day 25%; example target life 45 days. Working practices: 4 reeded bottles + 1 blank per base, 7 reeds, 5% liquid allowance, weights on days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14, blind 0–5 scoring at 1 m and 3 m on days 1, 7 and 14, reed photographs on days 3, 7 and 14. Production-rate liquid costs use the 500 ml base rate and British Rose's 1 kg rate. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, start at 10%, maximum 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "slow diffusion", 10–30%; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%; all five say rest 24–48 hours and describe themselves as crystal clear. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; 6–8 reeds for a standard 50–100 ml bottle, more for stronger and faster diffusion, fewer for subtler and longer-lasting. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point, shelf life or SDS figure for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; and no IFRA limit for any oil. Any density on this page is a labelled example the reader replaces with a weighed figure; any g/day is a labelled example the reader replaces with a measured one. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
