Reed Diffuser Pricing · Margin Ceiling
When the price is fixed, the cost is the variable. At ₹799 and an example 50% gross margin, after example packaging and labour, this is the most a 120 ml bottle's raw materials can cost — and the honest comparison with CSI's listed-pack prices.
₹309.50
maximum raw materials per 120 ml bottle at ₹799 and a 50% example margin · packaging ₹65.00 and labour ₹25.00 are labelled examples · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What is the maximum raw-material cost? ₹309.50 at a 50% example margin, after an example ₹65.00 of packaging and ₹25.00 of labour. At 30% it is ₹469.30; at 65%, ₹189.65.

What does a CSI 120 ml bottle cost? ₹445.86 to ₹552.80 for a 110 ml gourmand at 20% in Depth Base, 120 ml Gold bottle and eight black reeds — a 19.5%–32.9% margin at ₹799.

What closes the gap? Fill, reeds and load reach 39.0%. The 50 ml version costs ₹243.37 and needs ₹666.74 for 50%. See the levers.

Margin or markup? The Roasted Coffee bottle's 32.9% margin is a 49.1% markup. See the comparison.
The short answer
Answer: Price × (1 − margin) − packaging − labour = maximum raw materials: ₹309.50 at ₹799, a 50% example margin and example packaging. CSI listed packs put a 110 ml, 120 ml-bottle gourmand at ₹445.86–₹552.80, so ₹799 gives 19.5%–32.9%.
Why: At 88 g per bottle, the base alone costs ₹193.42 — more than the liquid ceiling — before the ₹106.20 bottle and ₹64.00 of reeds.
Method: Write the margin down, compute the ceiling, cost the real formula, then test the levers — lower load, fewer reeds, smaller fill, a 50 ml SKU — in a four-bottle round with blind scoring.
₹799 at a 50% margin leaves too little for the liquid 110 ml in a 120 ml Gold bottle · Depth Base · 20% · packaging ₹65.00 and labour ₹25.00 are labelled examples ₹799.00 Selling price −₹399.50 Margin 50% (example) −₹65.00 Pack (example) −₹25.00 Labour (example) −₹106.20 120 ml Gold bottle −₹64.00 8 black reeds ₹139.30 Liquid ceiling ₹275.66 Real liquid: Roasted Coffee The base alone (₹193.42 for 88 g) is more than the ₹139.30 liquid ceiling. On CSI's listed packs this bottle gives 32.9% at ₹799 with Roasted Coffee. A 50% margin needs a price of ₹1,071.72 — or a smaller bottle.
Working back from ₹799 at an example 50% margin. Packaging (₹65.00) and labour (₹25.00) are labelled non-CSI examples; the 120 ml Gold bottle (₹106.20) and eight black fibre reeds (₹64.00) are CSI prices. The dashed bar is what 110 ml of Roasted Coffee at 20% in Depth Base actually costs (₹275.66). CSI live pricing, 14 October 2026.
Straight answer
I want to sell 120 ml reed diffusers for ₹799 — how do I calculate the maximum raw-material cost while maintaining a healthy gross margin?
Work backwards: ₹799 × (1 − your margin target) is the most the bottle can cost; subtract packaging and labour, and what remains is your raw-material ceiling. At an example 50% margin, cost of goods can be ₹399.50; after an example ₹65.00 for label, box and sleeve and ₹25.00 of labour, raw materials can cost up to ₹309.50, and after CSI's 120 ml Gold bottle (₹106.20) and eight black fibre reeds (₹64.00), the liquid only ₹139.30. Honestly compared: a 110 ml fill of Roasted Coffee at 20% in Depth Base costs ₹445.86 on CSI's listed packs — a 32.9% margin at ₹799 — because the base alone is ₹193.42. Fill, reed count and load levers reach 39.0%; a 50 ml version at ₹666.74 reaches 50%. Remember margin is not markup, take GST and channel fees off first, and test the cheaper formula in four bottles (₹4,287.22) before buying stock.
One line: fix the margin, compute the ceiling, then let the arithmetic tell you whether the bottle size fits the price.
Honest answer first: on CSI's listed packs, a 110 ml gourmand diffuser in a 120 ml bottle costs ₹445.86 to ₹552.80 in raw materials — which at ₹799 and example packaging leaves a 19.5%–32.9% gross margin, not a healthy one. Below: the ceiling formula, the levers that move it, and a ₹4,287.22 four-bottle check before you buy stock.
See Depth Base

Work backwards from ₹799, not forwards from your materials

Most makers add up their costs and then ask what to charge. When the price is already fixed, run the sum the other way round — and be ready for what it says.

You have a price — ₹799 for a 120 ml reed diffuser — and you want a healthy gross margin. That gives you a ceiling: the most the bottle can cost you to make. Subtract the parts that are not raw materials, and what is left is the most you can spend on base, oil, bottle and reeds. Subtract the bottle and reeds, and what is left is the most you can spend on the liquid. Every one of those steps is one line of arithmetic, and none of them needs a guess except your own packaging quotes.

This is the pricing step of the business pillar how to start a profitable reed diffuser business in India. The two choices that set most of the cost — the base and the load — have pillars of their own: which reed diffuser base to buy in India and how much fragrance oil to add to 100 ml of base.

"Healthy" is your decision, not an industry number — none is published for reed diffusers, and the right margin depends on whether you sell direct, wholesale to shops, or through a marketplace. This page uses 50% as a labelled example target and shows 30% to 65% beside it. It treats ₹799 as the money you keep per bottle. If your ₹799 includes GST, take the GST out first at your applicable rate — your accountant confirms it — and run the same sums on what is left.

Your price: ₹799.00 · example margins · packaging ₹65.00 and labour ₹25.00 are labelled non-CSI examples · bottle and reeds CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026
The ceilings at four gross-margin targets
Gross margin target Max cost of goods Less packaging + labour (examples) Max raw materials Less bottle + reeds Max liquid
30% ₹559.30 ₹90.00 ₹469.30 ₹170.20 ₹299.10
40% ₹479.40 ₹90.00 ₹389.40 ₹170.20 ₹219.20
50% ₹399.50 ₹90.00 ₹309.50 ₹170.20 ₹139.30
65% ₹279.65 ₹90.00 ₹189.65 ₹170.20 ₹19.45

So at a 50% margin the bottle can cost ₹399.50 all in. Take away an example ₹12.00 label, ₹45.00 box, ₹8.00 reed sleeve and ₹25.00 of labour, and the raw-material ceiling is ₹309.50. Take away CSI's 120 ml Gold bottle at ₹106.20 and eight black fibre reeds at ₹8.00 each, and ₹139.30 is left for base and oil together — for 110 g of liquid. Replace the example packaging and labour with your own quotes; they move the ceiling rupee for rupee.

The CSI principle
Fix the margin first. The raw-material budget is what is left, not what you hope to spend.
Once the ceiling is written down, every fragrance, fill and bottle either fits under it or changes the price. There is no third option.

What a 120 ml bottle actually costs on CSI's listed packs

Now run it forwards with a real, buildable product. Three gourmands — Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco — in Depth Base, whose page names coffee, chocolate and spiced vanilla among its rich gourmands and says it "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils" (a claim to test). The fill is 110 ml in the 120 ml bottle — a labelled example; "120 ml" is the listing's size, not a fill line — at an example density of 1.00 g/ml: 110 g of liquid, 22 g of oil and 88 g of base at 20%. Oils are priced at their 1 kg rate, the base at its only listed size, 500 ml.

One bottle · 110 g at 20% · Depth 500 ml rate · oils at the 1 kg rate · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026
Three gourmands at ₹799
Oil Oil Base Bottle + reeds CSI raw materials Gross margin at ₹799 Price for a 50% margin
Roasted Coffee ₹82.24 ₹193.42 ₹170.20 ₹445.86 32.9% ₹1,071.72
Dark Vanilla ₹168.21 ₹193.42 ₹170.20 ₹531.84 22.2% ₹1,243.67
Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹189.18 ₹193.42 ₹170.20 ₹552.80 19.5% ₹1,285.60

None of the three reaches the example 50%; the cheapest, Roasted Coffee, gives 32.9%. Look at where the money goes: the base is ₹193.42 a bottle — more than the whole ₹139.30 liquid ceiling on its own — the bottle ₹106.20, the reeds ₹64.00. For coffee the oil (₹82.24) is one of the smaller lines; for the vanillas it is the one that moves. That is the honest result of pricing a ready-made base at its listed 500 ml retail price into a ₹799 product with a generous fill: the arithmetic does not leave room for a healthy margin.

The density example matters here as everywhere. At 0.95 g/ml your 110 ml weighs less and the Roasted Coffee bottle costs ₹441.75; at 1.05 g/ml, ₹449.97 — the base line is converted back to ml, so the change is mostly in the oil. Weigh 110 ml of your own blend once and use your figure. The 100 ml cost sheet walks through the line-by-line method, and the per-kg liquid-cost post shows the same formula when base and oil are bought by the kilo.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could have shown you a cheaper base price or a thinner fill and printed a 65% margin. We will not. On CSI's listed packs, a 110 ml fill of ready-made base in a ₹799 bottle does not make a healthy margin. Larger base quantities are quoted on WhatsApp, but no volume discount is published and we will not promise one. If ₹799 is fixed, the levers below are your real options — and one of them is a smaller bottle.

Margin and markup are not the same number

Gross margin is profit as a share of the selling price: (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. The Roasted Coffee bottle costs ₹535.86 all in and sells for ₹799.00: a 32.9% gross margin, but a 49.1% markup. Mixing the two is the most common way small makers think they are doing better than they are. "I add 50% to my cost" gives ₹803.79 on this bottle — a 33.3% margin, not 50%.

The same ceilings described two ways
Margin vs markup at a ₹799 selling price
Cost of goods Gross margin on ₹799 Markup on cost
₹559.30 30% 43%
₹479.40 40% 67%
₹399.50 50% 100%
₹279.65 65% 186%
₹535.86 (Roasted Coffee, as costed) 32.9% 49.1%
Write both on your cost sheet
Shops and distributors usually talk in margin; makers often think in markup. If you plan to sell wholesale later, a shop will want its own margin out of the shelf price, so a ₹799 retail product may sell to the shop for much less. Run the ceiling at the wholesale price too before you commit to a formula.

The levers that move the margin — and how far

Four things change the cost of this bottle. Only one of them changes it a lot.
Roasted Coffee in Depth Base · levers applied one after another · 1.00 g/ml example · packaging and labour examples unchanged
What each change does at ₹799
Configuration CSI raw materials Gross margin at ₹799 Price for 50% Needs a test?

Fill 100 ml instead of 110 ml ₹420.80 36.1% ₹1,021.60 No — but the bottle lasts fewer days
…and 6 reeds instead of 8 ₹404.80 38.1% ₹989.60 Yes — reeds change use and strength
…and 15% load instead of 20% ₹397.10 39.0% ₹974.20 Yes — blind room score at both loads
50 ml Gold bottle, 45 ml fill, 6 reeds — its own product ₹243.37 — ₹666.74 A new SKU, priced on its own

Stack all three formula levers and the 120 ml bottle reaches 39.0% at ₹799 — better, still short of 50%, and every step costs the customer something: less liquid, fewer reeds, a lighter fragrance. The lever that actually closes the gap is the price-to-size match. The same formula in a 50 ml bottle costs ₹243.37 in raw materials, and a 50% margin on it needs a price of ₹666.74 with the same example packaging. If your market will pay ₹799 for 120 ml, ask whether it would pay something close to that for less.

The base is the other lever, and the one we can least promise. To reach 50% with the as-costed Roasted Coffee bottle, the base would have to cost about ₹0.65 per ml — against ₹2.20 for Depth's 500 ml. That is a figure to put to any supplier, including us on WhatsApp for quantities beyond the listed packs; no volume discount is published, and the answer may simply be no. Comparing base prices per kg with density and yield shows how to compare such quotes fairly, and whether a better base pays for itself in repeat purchases looks at the opposite trade.

110 g fill · Depth Base at ₹2.20 per ml · 1.00 g/ml example · packaging and labour examples as above
The highest oil price the 120 ml bottle can carry
Margin target At 15% load At 20% load At 25% load
30% ₹5.67/g ₹4.80/g ₹4.28/g
40% ₹0.83/g ₹1.17/g ₹1.38/g
50% No room — the base alone exceeds the ceiling No room — the base alone exceeds the ceiling No room — the base alone exceeds the ceiling
65% No room — the base alone exceeds the ceiling No room — the base alone exceeds the ceiling No room — the base alone exceeds the ceiling

Only the lower targets leave any room for oil at this fill and base price. At 30% and 20%, oil up to ₹4.80 per gram fits — Roasted Coffee at ₹3.74 does; Dark Vanilla at ₹7.65 and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at ₹8.60 do not. At 40%, the allowance falls to ₹1.17 per gram. Lowering the load is worth testing, never assuming: the saving per 1,000 bottles from 25% to 20% and the most economical fragrance percentage weigh it against throw.

A margin target is a rule about every future fragrance, not a hope about this one.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

If you sell through a marketplace or a shop

₹799 is not always ₹799. If a marketplace or payment platform keeps a share — say an example 20%, which you replace with your real fee schedule — the money you receive is ₹639.20, and a 50% target gives a raw-material ceiling of only ₹229.60. Whether a fee belongs inside cost of goods or below the gross-margin line is an accounting choice; what matters is running the ceiling on the money you actually receive.

Same bottle, two channels · 50% example target · 20% example channel fee
Direct sale vs a fee-taking channel
Channel Money received per bottle Max raw materials at 50% Roasted Coffee bottle Gross margin
Direct (example) ₹799.00 ₹309.50 ₹445.86 32.9%
With an example 20% fee ₹639.20 ₹229.60 ₹445.86 16.2%

That second row is where a ₹799 120 ml product gets into real trouble. If marketplaces are your main channel, build the ceiling on the second row from the start, and test whether a smaller bottle at a lower price works better there.

Test the cheaper formula before you print a price

The ceiling tells you what you can afford. It does not tell you that a cheaper formula still works. Four bottles do: Roasted Coffee at 20% with eight reeds as the control, the same oil at 15%, the same oil with six reeds, and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at 20% to see whether the dearer oil earns a dearer product. Same 110 ml fill in all four, so only one thing changes per comparison.

Coffee Vanilla Tobacco has no 15 g size, so its 50 g is the smallest purchase. Six of the ten bottles and most of the base are left for production or a 50 ml trial. CSI publishes no IFRA percentage for any oil — before you sell, ask on WhatsApp for each oil's IFRA certificate and read its Category 10A limit; if it is lower than your load, it wins, whatever your margin says.

The common mistake: costing at the sample rate and pricing at the bulk rate — or the other way round. Roasted Coffee is ₹4.60 a gram in the 50 g and ₹3.738 in the 1 kg. If you set your price on the 1 kg rate while still buying 50 g bottles, your first months run below even the margin in the table. Fix: cost at the size you are buying now, and re-cost when you move up.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. A supplier would rather show you a margin that sells more base. This page shows that CSI's listed-pack prices do not give a healthy margin on a 110 ml diffuser at ₹799, names the base as the largest line, and points to a smaller bottle before a bigger order.

Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ is out of stock and appears only as such. Every gram split, unit count, per-bottle cost and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it.

Bottle counts per arm, hold times, fill volumes, example densities, example grams-per-day figures, scoring scales and allowances are labelled working practices or examples, not industry standards. The 30–65% margins, the 110 ml fill, the 1.00 g/ml density, the ₹12.00 label, ₹45.00 box, ₹8.00 sleeve, ₹25.00 labour and the 20% channel fee are labelled examples; ₹799 is the reader's figure. Frequently asked questions

What is a good profit margin for reed diffusers in India?
There is no published industry figure; it depends on your channel. This page uses 50% gross margin as an example target and shows 30–65%. Fix yours in writing before you choose a formula or a bottle size.
How do I calculate gross margin on a reed diffuser?
(Selling price − cost of goods) ÷ selling price. At ₹799 with ₹535.86 of cost of goods, the margin is 32.9%. Markup is the same profit divided by cost instead.
How much does a 120 ml reed diffuser cost to make?
With CSI's Depth Base, a gourmand oil at 20%, a 120 ml Gold bottle and eight black fibre reeds, ₹445.86 to ₹552.80 in raw materials at a 110 ml fill and 1.00 g/ml example density, on listed-pack prices.
Should GST be included when I calculate my margin?
Run the margin on the money you keep. If your ₹799 includes GST, remove it at your applicable rate first — your accountant confirms the rate — and calculate the ceiling on what is left.
What price should I charge for a 120 ml reed diffuser?
Price = cost of goods ÷ (1 − margin). For the Roasted Coffee bottle on this page, a 50% margin needs ₹1,071.72 with the example packaging; use your own costs.
Is a 50 ml reed diffuser more profitable than 120 ml?
Not automatically — it depends on price. The same formula in a 50 ml bottle costs ₹243.37 in raw materials and needs about ₹666.74 for a 50% margin with the same example packaging.
Ceiling first, formula second
Write the margin down. Cost the real formula. Match the bottle to the price.
Depth Base ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml, Roasted Coffee from ₹93.22 for 15 g, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹449.00 for 50 g, Gold bottles ₹1,062.00 for ten 120 ml or ₹826.00 for ten 50 ml, black fibre reeds ₹400.00 for 50. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)). Reader's figure: ₹799.00 per 120 ml bottle. Labelled examples: 50% target margin (30–65% shown); 110 ml fill (100 ml and a 45 ml/50 ml SKU in the levers); 1.00 g/ml density with 0.95 and 1.05 sensitivity; label ₹12.00, box ₹45.00, sleeve ₹8.00, labour ₹25.00 (non-CSI, same for both bottle sizes); 20% channel fee; 5% allowance in the kit. Costs use the 500 ml base rate, the 1 kg oil rate and the 50-plus reed rate. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base gives a 10% starting load, 20% recommended, 30% maximum, of total blend, and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance adds a typical working blend of 75% base + 25% fragrance and the example "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil" (by volume); Longevity says to avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, and "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest". The reed pages give a 20.3 cm length and "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds"; reed diameter is not published. The bottle listing's text says "50 and 100ml" while its variants are 50 ml and 120 ml; neck size, fill line and any reducer are not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, no IFRA percentage for any oil, and no diffusion, throw or longevity measurement for any base, oil or reed. Every ml-to-gram conversion here uses a labelled example density with ±5% sensitivity; every grams-per-day figure is a labelled example for the arithmetic, never a measurement. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
