Business Economics · 100 kg Wax Orders
A better per-kilo price on 100 kg is only a saving if the wax turns into candles before the cost of holding it eats the discount. That happens faster than most makers expect. The answer is a number of months, and you can calculate it in one line.
25–35 kg
of wax a month — the use at which a 100 kg order sits inside a three-to-four-month practical cap · break-even maths below uses a labelled example holding rate
Quick answers — read this first
How many months of wax use should 100 kg be? As a working rule, no more than three to four months, which means using 25–35 kg a month or more. Beyond that, storage, cash and the chance of changing your formula outweigh most discounts, even when the maths says the saving still wins.

How do I calculate the break-even? Maximum months of cover = 1 + 2 × discount ÷ monthly holding rate. With a 6% discount and an example holding rate of 2.5% a month, that is 5.8 months. The holding rate is yours to set: your cost of money plus storage and risk.

Does CSI sell 100 kg of wax? The listed wax packs stop at 10 kg, except Natural Soy Pearl Wax, which is listed at 50 kg for ₹21,240.00. Anything larger is quoted on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published.

Is the listed bulk wax cheaper per kilo? CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.00 (₹599.90 at 10 kg). Natural Soy Pearl drops 5.6% from 5 kg and stays at ₹424.80 through 50 kg.
The short answer
Formula: Break-even cover (months) = 1 + 2d ÷ h, where d = discount on the big order and h = your monthly holding rate (cost of money + storage + risk). Divide 100 kg by it for the minimum monthly use.
Worked example: 30 kg a month of CSI 464, a hypothetical 6% off on 100 kg: saving ₹3,044.40, example holding cost ₹1,391.12, net ₹1,653.28 over 3.3 months.
Practical cap: Keep a single wax order within about three to four months of use, whatever the formula says: storage, cash for festive stock and formula changes all argue against more.
How long 100 kg of wax lasts at different monthly use — and where the example break-even sits 10.0 mo 10 kg / month 5.0 mo 20 kg / month 3.3 mo 30 kg / month 2.5 mo 40 kg / month 2.0 mo 50 kg / month 1.3 mo 75 kg / month example break-even 5.8 months (6% off, 2.5%/month holding) practical cap ~4 months Black = 100 kg within the practical cap · grey = pays on paper only · light = does not pay at the example rates.
Bars show how many months 100 kg lasts at each monthly use (capped at 10 months on the chart). The upper dashed line is the break-even cover for a hypothetical 6% discount at an example holding rate of 2.5% a month; the lower is the practical four-month cap. Both rates are examples — replace them with your own.
Straight answer
I'm getting better wholesale prices on 100 kg of wax — how many months of consumption should I have before ordering that much?
Order 100 kg only when it is no more than about three to four months of your use — roughly 25–35 kg a month or more — and when the per-kilo saving beats the cost of holding it. The break-even is one line: maximum months of cover = 1 + 2 × discount ÷ monthly holding rate. The holding rate is your own: your cost of money plus storage and risk. With a hypothetical 6% off and an example holding rate of 2.5% a month, 100 kg pays on paper up to 5.8 months of cover, so at least 17.2 kg a month. At 30 kg a month of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹507.40 a kilo), a 6% discount saves ₹3,044.40 on 100 kg against an example holding cost of ₹1,391.12. Then apply the practical cap, because storage space, cash needed for Diwali stock and the chance of changing your wax all bite before the formula does. For reference, CSI's listed wax stops at 10 kg; Natural Soy Pearl Wax is listed to 50 kg (₹21,240.00, ₹424.80 a kilo, the same rate as its 5 kg). Anything larger is quoted on WhatsApp, with no published discount.
One line: divide 100 kg by your monthly use; if the answer is more than four, the discount has to be very large to be worth it.
If you are pricing a 100 kg order, start from the listed rate you would otherwise pay. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, so 100 kg in ten 10 kg bags is ₹50,740.00. Any quote for 100 kg should be compared with that figure, not with the 1 kg sticker.
See CSI 464

The break-even in one line

A discount is paid once. Holding cost is paid every month the wax sits. The question is how many months before the second catches the first.

Suppose you normally buy one month of wax at a time. Your stock runs from a full month down to zero, so on average you hold half a month. If you instead buy 100 kg, your stock runs from 100 kg down to zero over 100 ÷ your monthly use months, and on average you hold 50 kg. The extra stock you carry is (100 − monthly use) ÷ 2 kg, for the whole time the order lasts. Its cost each month is that extra stock's value × your holding rate.

Set the one-off saving equal to the total extra holding cost and the arithmetic simplifies neatly. If d is the discount on the big order and h is your holding rate per month, the order pays as long as the months of cover M satisfy:

The CSI principle
M ≤ 1 + 2d ÷ h
M is months of cover (100 kg ÷ monthly use), d the discount as a fraction, h the monthly holding rate as a fraction. Minimum monthly use for 100 kg = 100 ÷ (1 + 2d ÷ h). Buying one month at a time is the baseline; the formula measures the extra cost of holding more than that.

The holding rate is the one number you must choose yourself, and it is where most makers go wrong by leaving it out. It has three parts. Cost of money: what the cash would earn or save elsewhere — the interest on a loan you could repay, or the margin on festive stock it could fund. Storage and handling: space, sacks, moving bags around, a dry shelf. Risk: wax spoiled by damp or heat, a formula change that strands the old wax, a price drop you miss. This page uses an example of 1.5% a month for money plus 1.0% for storage and risk, a total of 2.5% a month. Replace both with your own figures; they are illustrations, not market rates.

Break-even cover and minimum monthly use for a 100 kg order · discount is the reader's hypothetical · holding rates are EXAMPLES to replace
How far a discount stretches at three example holding rates
Hypothetical discount on 100 kg Holding 1.5% / month Holding 2.5% / month Holding 3.5% / month
2% off 3.7 months · 27.3 kg/month 2.6 months · 38.5 kg/month 2.1 months · 46.7 kg/month
4% off 6.3 months · 15.8 kg/month 4.2 months · 23.8 kg/month 3.3 months · 30.4 kg/month
6% off 9.0 months · 11.1 kg/month 5.8 months · 17.2 kg/month 4.4 months · 22.6 kg/month
8% off 11.7 months · 8.6 kg/month 7.4 months · 13.5 kg/month 5.6 months · 17.9 kg/month
10% off 14.3 months · 7.0 kg/month 9.0 months · 11.1 kg/month 6.7 months · 14.9 kg/month

Two things jump out. First, small discounts do not stretch far. A 2% discount at a 2.5% holding rate justifies only 2.6 months of cover — you would need to use 38 kg a month before 100 kg made sense. Second, the holding rate matters as much as the discount. The same 6% stretches to 9.0 months if your money is cheap and storage is free, but only 4.4 months at 3.5%. That is why two makers can receive the same quote and both be right to answer differently.

Use your real alternative for the cost of money
If you are carrying a business loan or paying a supplier on credit, the interest rate is your floor. If the cash would otherwise fund Diwali stock that sells at a healthy margin, the cost of money is that margin, which is usually far higher than any interest rate. Should I Keep More Money in Cash or Use It to Buy Larger Quantities of Candle Raw Materials at Better Prices? covers the cash-versus-inventory choice in general.

100 kg against your monthly use

Here is the formula applied to a range of monthly wax use, pricing the wax as Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo and assuming a hypothetical 6% off for the 100 kg order (₹476.96 a kilo). The holding cost uses the example 2.5% a month. The candle column converts monthly wax into 200 g candles at 184 g of wax each.

CSI 464 at ₹507.40 / kg · hypothetical 6% off on 100 kg · EXAMPLE holding rate 2.5% a month
Does a 100 kg order pay at your monthly use?
Monthly wax use Candles a month (184 g) 100 kg lasts Discount saved Extra holding cost Net Order 100 kg?
10 kg 54 10.0 months ₹3,044.40 ₹5,365.76 -₹2,321.36 No
20 kg 109 5.0 months ₹3,044.40 ₹2,384.78 ₹659.62 Maths yes, practice no
30 kg 163 3.3 months ₹3,044.40 ₹1,391.12 ₹1,653.28 Yes
40 kg 217 2.5 months ₹3,044.40 ₹894.29 ₹2,150.11 Yes
50 kg 272 2.0 months ₹3,044.40 ₹596.19 ₹2,448.20 Yes
75 kg 408 1.3 months ₹3,044.40 ₹198.73 ₹2,845.67 Yes

At 10 kg a month, 100 kg is ten months of wax: the ₹3,044.40 discount is swamped by ₹5,365.76 of holding cost. At 20 kg a month the maths turns positive, but five months of wax on the floor is more than most workshops should hold. From about 30 kg a month the order is both profitable on paper and inside the four-month cap. At 50 kg a month and above it is comfortably worth taking, provided the wax is one you are not planning to change.

The scenario this page is built around sits at 30 kg a month, about 163 candles. A 100 kg order lasts 3.3 months. The discount saves ₹3,044.40. The extra holding cost at the example rate is ₹1,391.12, leaving ₹1,653.28 — real, but smaller than the headline discount suggests. At a 3.5% holding rate the net would be ₹1,096.83.

The mistake that looks like a bargain. A maker using 12 kg a month takes a 100 kg order for a 5% discount because "wax doesn't go off". The discount is ₹2,537.00. The wax lasts more than eight months, ties up about ₹24,101.50 on average, and needs a dry corner for ten bags. By month five the maker has changed to a different jar and wants a different wax blend. The saving was real; the decision was not. My Supplier Gives Better Prices for Larger Orders but I'm Worried About Dead Stock — How Do I Decide the Maximum Inventory Worth Holding? covers setting a maximum inventory to prevent this.

Why the practical cap is lower

The formula prices money and storage. It does not price the things that make old wax the wrong wax.

Formula change. Most small brands adjust their wax, load or jar within their first year. Every such change strands wax bought for the old formula. The longer your cover, the more of it gets stranded. A four-month cap limits the damage to one order.

Storage conditions. Wax stores well when it is sealed, dry, and kept away from heat and sunlight, as a matter of general practice. Ten 10 kg bags in a warm room through an Indian summer is a different proposition from one bag on a shelf. Wax shelf life is not published in our data, so ask the supplier — including CSI on WhatsApp — before planning to hold any wax for many months, and use it first-in, first-out.

Seasonal cash. Wax is the largest single cash item in a candle order by weight. The cash tied up in a 100 kg order in September is cash not available for Diwali fragrances and jars, and Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. A discount on wax that leaves you short of festive stock is a bad trade. My Candle Sales Double During Diwali — How Early Should I Start Increasing Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Before the Season? covers how early to build seasonal inventory.

Price movement. A big order locks today's price. That protects you if prices rise and costs you if they fall. The formula assumes prices stay flat, which is the neutral assumption; if you have reason to expect movement either way, adjust the holding rate rather than guessing.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A supplier quoting 100 kg would rather you ignored the holding cost, and so would we if we were quoting it. At 30 kg a month the net saving on a hypothetical 6% is about half the discount headline, and at 15 kg a month it turns slightly negative. If your use is below about 25 kg a month, keep buying 10 kg bags of a flat-priced wax like CSI 464: the per-kilo price is the same as it will be in any 10 kg bag, and you hold a quarter of the stock.
Divide the order by your monthly use. If the answer is bigger than four, the discount must be very large.

Compare the quote with the listed packs

Before you run the formula, make sure the discount is real. A "wholesale price on 100 kg" is only a discount against what you would otherwise pay, which may already be a bulk rate. On CSI's listed packs:

So if you already buy Natural Soy Pearl Wax in 5 kg bags, a 100 kg order from the listed packs gives you no further per-kilo saving: ₹424.80 at 5 kg, 10 kg and 50 kg. If you buy 1 kg packs of it, moving to 5 kg captures the full 5.6% without any 100 kg commitment. For CSI 464 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the listed rate is flat, so any 100 kg discount would have to come from a quote. Ask for one on WhatsApp with your monthly use, and remember that no volume discount figure is published; do not plan around one until you have it in writing.

One last check. The formula compares a big order with buying monthly. If you already hold two months of safety stock for good reasons — long delivery times, a festive peak — the baseline is two months, not one, and a 100 kg order adds less extra stock than the formula assumes. In that case, measure M from the stock you would hold anyway. The principle is unchanged: count every month the wax sits, and charge each one at your holding rate.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A wax supplier benefits when customers buy big orders, so we have every incentive to skip the holding-cost side of this calculation. We have put it in, with a formula you can check, and we say plainly that CSI's listed wax prices do not fall above 1 kg for CSI 464 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, and that Natural Soy Pearl's break arrives at 5 kg, not 50 kg.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Per-kilo figures, 100 kg totals and the break-even table are plain arithmetic on those prices and on the formula shown. The 6% discount is a hypothetical standing in for the reader's quote; CSI publishes no volume discount.

The holding rates (1.5% a month for money, 1.0% for storage and risk, 2.5% in total) are examples to replace with your own, not interest rates or market data. The four-month cap is a working judgement. For quotes above the listed packs, GST invoicing or MSDS documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much wax should I buy at once for my candle business?
Enough to cover your use until the next delivery plus a buffer, and rarely more than three to four months. For a large discounted order, use M ≤ 1 + 2 × discount ÷ monthly holding rate, where M is months of cover. I'm Using 10 Kg of Soy Wax Every Month — How Much Should I Order at Once so I Save on Cost Without Holding Unnecessary Inventory? works through a 10 kg-a-month business.
Is it worth buying 100 kg of soy wax?
Only if 100 kg is within about three to four months of your use (roughly 25–35 kg a month or more) and the per-kilo saving beats your holding cost. At 10 kg a month even a 6% discount loses money at a 2.5% monthly example holding rate.
What is holding cost for candle raw materials?
The monthly cost of keeping stock: the return your cash could earn elsewhere, plus storage, handling and risk of loss or obsolescence. It is specific to your business; this page uses 2.5% a month purely as an example.
Does soy wax expire if I store 100 kg?
A shelf life is not published in our data. In general practice, wax keeps best sealed, dry and away from heat and sunlight, used first-in, first-out. Ask the supplier — CSI on WhatsApp — before planning to hold any wax for many months.
What is the biggest soy wax pack CSI sells?
Natural Soy Pearl Wax is listed at 50 kg for ₹21,240.00. CSI 464, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 are listed up to 10 kg. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp.
How do I compare a 100 kg wax quote with smaller packs?
Compare landed per-kilo prices, including delivery, against the rate you pay in the pack you actually buy — not the 1 kg sticker. Then run the break-even formula with your own holding rate. The 6% discount is the reader's hypothetical. Holding rates of 1.5%, 2.5% and 3.5% a month are illustrative examples, not market rates. Candles per month assume 184 g of wax per 200 g candle at an 8% load. The three-to-four-month cap is a working judgement. Wax shelf life is not published in our data. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
