Buyer question · Soy candle business
You have the wax question half-answered and a wish list of forty scents. This page cuts it to ten, spread across the families customers actually ask for and across three price tiers, and prices the whole first order: testers, test pots, wax, wicks and the first production bottles.
₹990.72
ten 15 g testers across seven fragrance families · the full screening set for a soy candle launch · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which 10 fragrance oils should a new soy candle business buy first? Our suggested starting ten: Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Citrus Lemon, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Apple Cinnamon and Jasmine. They cover herbal, floral, gourmand, fresh, woody, citrus and spice, and sit at the top of CSI's best-selling sort. See the ten, priced.

How much does it cost to test all ten? ₹990.72 for ten 15 g testers. The full screening kit with wax, 30 test pots, wicks, a scale and a thermometer comes to ₹4,123.72 with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks.

Should I buy 15 g or 100 g first? 15 g first for every oil, then 100 g only for the ones that pass. The 15 g costs more per gram (Citrus Lemon ₹5.43 vs ₹3.00), but it is the cheapest way to find out an oil is wrong for you.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 464? Both are container soy waxes. Chunks are rated up to 13% fragrance load, CSI 464 up to 10%. At an 8% load in a 200 g candle, CSI 464 saves ₹16.85 of wax per candle. See the wax decision.
The short answer
The ten: Lavender · British Rose · Roasted Coffee · Dark Vanilla · Blue Ocean · Sandalwood · Citrus Lemon · Japanese Cherry Blossom · Apple Cinnamon · Jasmine — seven families, three price tiers, all with an in-stock 15 g and 100 g.
Stage costs: Screening: ₹990.72 of oil (₹4,123.72 with wax, pots, wicks and tools). First production if all ten pass: ₹4,764.24 of oil, ₹16,554.24 for 60 finished 200 g candles' materials.
Per candle: 16 g of oil in a 200 g candle at 8%, priced at 100 g rates: ₹48.00 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹126.40 (Dark Vanilla). Material cost ₹234.92–₹313.32 with Chunks, wick and jar.
The two-stage buy: ten 15 g testers first, 100 g only for the oils that pass Stage 1 · 10 × 15 g ₹990.72 in oil 3 pots per oil: 50 g at 6% · 8% · 10% 3 g + 4 g + 5 g = 12 g 30 pots · 3 g spare each Score & cut cure 7–14 days cold + hot throw, pool, soot cost per candle drop anything that fails one Stage 2 · 100 g each ₹4,764.24 if all 10 pass 200 g jars at 8% 16 g oil per candle 6 candles per bottle 4 g left per bottle The 15 g tester costs a median 23.1% more per gram than 100 g. You pay that premium once, on ten oils, to avoid paying for 100 g of a scent that fails. CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · pots, loads and cure times are working assumptions
Stage 1 buys every oil at 15 g, the size where the tester premium sits, and runs each through three 50 g pots at 6%, 8% and 10%. That uses 12 g of each bottle. Stage 2 buys 100 g only of the oils that pass. At 16 g per 200 g candle, one 100 g bottle makes six candles with 4 g to spare. Both stages are priced below, and nothing in them assumes a volume discount.
Straight answer
I'm starting a soy candle business. Which 10 fragrance oils should I buy first, and how should I buy them?
Buy ten oils that cover different jobs, not ten versions of the scent you like. Our suggested set is Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Citrus Lemon, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Apple Cinnamon and Jasmine. That is seven families (herbal, floral, gourmand, fresh, woody, citrus, spice) across value, mid and premium price tiers, and all ten sit at the top of CSI's best-selling sort on the pull date. Buy each as a 15 g tester first: all ten cost ₹990.72. Each 15 g runs three 50 g test pots at 6%, 8% and 10%. Keep only the oils that pass your cure-and-burn test, then buy those in 100 g, which makes six 200 g candles at an 8% load. If all ten pass, that second order is ₹4,764.24. For wax, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (up to 13% load) or CSI 464 (up to 10%, cheaper per kilo) both suit container candles. Skip the 1 kg until a scent is reordering; for most oils it is not cheaper per gram. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so the test decides, not this list.
One line: ten testers for ₹990.72, then 100 g only of what survives your own burn test.
The screening set, priced today: ten 15 g testers — Lavender ₹105.02, British Rose ₹94.40, Roasted Coffee ₹93.22, Dark Vanilla ₹130.00, Blue Ocean ₹93.22, Sandalwood ₹93.22, Citrus Lemon ₹81.42, Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹104.00, Apple Cinnamon ₹93.22 and Jasmine ₹103.00. Total ₹990.72. CSI does not sell these as a pack; you add each 15 g to the cart yourself, or ask us to put the order together on WhatsApp.

The ten, priced

A first range is not a list of favourites. It is ten bets on ten different customers, placed as cheaply as possible.

Every oil in this set has an in-stock 15 g and an in-stock 100 g on 24 September 2026, so both stages of the plan can actually be bought. The table shows the tester price, the production price, the premium you pay per gram for the tester, and what 16 g of the oil costs inside a 200 g candle at the 100 g rate. The last two columns add wax, wick and jar, first with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and then with Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464.

Material cost means oil, wax, wick and jar only. It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. With Chunks the fixed base is ₹186.92 per candle (184 g of wax at ₹599.00 a kilo is ₹110.22, plus an Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80). With CSI 464 the base is ₹170.06. The oil then adds between ₹48.00 and ₹126.40. The average across the ten is ₹76.23 of oil per candle, so a range built from this set has a spread of ₹78.40 per candle from its cheapest to its dearest scent. That spread is the first pricing decision your business makes.

Look at the premium column too. British Rose and Citrus Lemon carry the biggest tester premium in the set, above 80% per gram, because their 100 g prices are low. Dark Vanilla carries the smallest, under 10%. That does not change the plan — you still test in 15 g — but it tells you that the cheap oils become much cheaper per candle the moment you move them to 100 g, and the premium oils barely move.

All ten have a real 15 g on the shelf today
Fifty-one of the 93 oils in the collection have an in-stock 15 g. Many newer and inspired-by oils start at 50 g or 100 g. We chose a starting ten where the tester actually exists, so the screening stage costs about ₹100 an oil instead of ₹250–₹800. If you swap an oil for one without a 15 g, its smallest listed size becomes its tester, and your screening bill rises accordingly.

Why these ten, and how to swap

The ten are chosen on three rules. None of them is a claim about throw. First, cover the families. A new brand does not yet know whether its buyers want fresh, floral or gourmand, so the first range should let them tell you. Second, cover the price tiers. Four value oils (British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Citrus Lemon and Jasmine), five mid-tier and one premium give you candles you can sell at different prices without redesigning the range. Third, start where the catalogue is proven to move. These ten are the first ten in the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on the pull date. That is the store's own sort order, not a sales figure, but it is a better starting signal than guessing.

What these rules do not tell you is how any oil throws in your wax, your jar and your room. We have not published throw measurements for any oil in the catalogue, and a ranking by "strength" would be invented. The test in stage 1 is where you find that out, and it is why stage 1 exists. For the method itself — scoring hot throw side by side — see Which Fragrance Oils Give the Best Hot Throw in Soy Wax?.

Six swaps that keep the same shape

If one of the ten does not suit your brand, swap it for an oil that does the same job in the range. Each alternative below also has an in-stock 15 g and 100 g.

Alternatives with in-stock 15 g and 100 g · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Swaps that keep the family and tier spread
Alternative Swap 15 g 100 g Oil per candle (16 g at 100 g rate) Why
Woody Oud in place of Sandalwood ₹93.22 ₹453.12 ₹72.50 a darker woody for an evening range
Eucalyptus Spearmint in place of Blue Ocean ₹68.44 ₹354.00 ₹56.64 a spa-fresh profile at the cheapest 15 g in the catalogue
Mango Coconut in place of Citrus Lemon ₹93.22 ₹500.00 ₹80.00 a tropical fruit profile with a 20.7% 1 kg saving
Cinnamon Vanilla in place of Apple Cinnamon ₹106.20 ₹483.80 ₹77.41 a festive gourmand-spice for Diwali gifting
Bergamot Amber in place of Dark Vanilla ₹105.02 ₹560.00 ₹89.60 an amber for a premium tier that is not a vanilla
Fresh Strawberries in place of Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹113.28 ₹377.60 ₹60.42 a sweet fruit with a 6.3% 1 kg saving

Two of those swaps have a real 1 kg saving later, which matters once a scent is reordering: Mango Coconut at 20.7% and Fresh Strawberries at 6.3%. Among the original ten, British Rose (10.3%), Jasmine (8.8%) and Citrus Lemon (5.6%) also save at the kilo. Most other oils in the set cost about the same per gram at 100 g and at 1 kg.

The common mistake: ten oils from one family. A maker who loves florals buys rose, jasmine, gardenia, cherry blossom, ylang ylang, tuberose and four more. The range looks full, but a customer who wants a coffee or a fresh scent leaves with nothing, and you learn nothing about what the other buyers want. Keep at most two or three from any one family in the first ten. Best Fragrance Oils for Soy Candle Making in India covers the full soy shortlist if you want to look wider before you choose.

Stage 1 — screening in 15 g

Fifteen grams is not enough to make a candle you will sell. It is exactly enough to find out whether you should.

At an 8% load, 15 g scents 187.5 g of finished candle — roughly one 200 g jar. A single jar tells you very little, because you have nothing to compare it with. Split the same 15 g across three 50 g test pots at 6%, 8% and 10% instead. That uses 3 g, 4 g and 5 g, 12 g in all, and leaves 3 g spare for a re-pour. You now learn how the oil behaves across the range you might sell at, from the same bottle. Both soy waxes in this plan allow 10%: CSI 464 is rated up to 10% and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%. Those are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.

Per oil · three 50 g pots · working test design
What each 15 g tester is used for
Pot Load Oil Wax Total
A 6% 3 g 47 g 50 g
B 8% 4 g 46 g 50 g
C 10% 5 g 45 g 50 g
Spare — 3 g — for a re-pour

For ten oils that is 30 pots, 120 g of oil and 1,380 g of wax. A 50 g pot needs a real container; the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar is listed at a 50 g wax capacity, ₹450.00 for 10, so three packs cover the 30 pots. Wicks are Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, ₹5.90 each. Wick size for a given diameter is not something we publish, so treat your first three pots as a wick check before the other 27.

1
Weigh everythingLoad is a percentage of the finished weight. For pot B: 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax. A weighing scale (₹354.00) is not optional for a business; spoons and eyeballing make the test meaningless.
2
Add oil at a consistent temperatureUse the pen thermometer (₹354.00) and follow the wax's product page for its add-and-pour temperatures. The point is that every one of the 30 pots is made the same way, so the only difference is the oil and the load.
3
Label and cureWrite oil, load and pour date under every pot. Soy is commonly cured for one to two weeks before judging. Smell each pot cold at day 3, day 7 and day 14 and note when it stops changing.
4
Burn in the same room, one oil at a timeBurn each pot for at least two hours, long enough for a full melt pool. Score the scent at the door and at the far side of the room at 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Note soot, tunnelling and any wet spots or frosting.
5
Cost itPut each oil's per-candle cost from the table above next to its score. An oil that scores well but needs 10% to do it uses 25% more oil per candle than it would at 8%.
6
CutDrop any oil that fails on throw, burn or cost. A range of six strong performers beats ten average ones. The survivors go to stage 2.
Stage 1 bill · ten oils · CSI live pricing, 24–25 September 2026
Everything the screening stage costs
Item Quantity Luxury Soy Wax Chunks route CSI 464 route
Ten 15 g testers 150 g of oil ₹990.72 ₹990.72
Wax (1,380 g needed) 1 kg + 500 g ₹898.00 ₹767.40
Heart Cutout Velvet Jar, 50 g 3 × pack of 10 ₹1,350.00 ₹1,350.00
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 30 wicks (20 + 10) ₹177.00 ₹177.00
Weighing scale + pen thermometer one each ₹708.00 ₹708.00
Total ₹4,123.72 ₹3,993.12

The oil is less than a quarter of that bill. The test pots are the biggest single line, and the scale and thermometer you only buy once. If you already own tools, stage 1 drops by ₹708.00. You could also reuse test containers you already have, as long as all 30 are the same size and shape. Plan 3–5% extra wax for pour loss as a working assumption; the 1.5 kg of wax above already leaves 120 g over.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could suggest you skip the testers and buy ten 100 g bottles straight away; it is a bigger order for us. It is also a worse plan for you. Ten 100 g bottles cost ₹4,764.24. Ten testers cost ₹990.72. If three oils fail — and in any honest first test some will — the 100 g route leaves you with roughly 300 g of oil you will not use. The testers cost more per gram, and that is the premium you pay to find out cheaply.

The wax decision: Chunks or CSI 464

Both waxes are CSI container soy waxes, and both carry a published fragrance-load ceiling, which is why this plan uses them. Every other wax in the catalogue — coconut soy, soy pearl, pillar soy — has no ceiling in our data, so if you choose one of those, check the product page or ask on WhatsApp before you set a load. The two differ on price and headroom.

Base per candle with wick and jar ₹186.92 ₹170.06
Saving per candle vs Chunks — ₹16.85
Saving on 60 candles — ₹1,011.26

If your range will run at 8% or less, CSI 464 is the cheaper wax and its 10% ceiling is not a constraint. If you want the option to test above 10% for a scent that seems faint, only Chunks allows it, up to 13%. Neither ceiling is a target. More oil than a candle can burn cleanly does not reliably buy more scent, and it costs money on every candle. The load question in depth, including when 6% is enough, is in Fragrance Oils for Soy Candles at 6–8% Fragrance Load.

The CSI principle
Choose the wax once, before stage 1.
Oils behave differently in different waxes. If you screen in Chunks and produce in CSI 464, your stage 1 scores no longer describe your product. Pick the wax first, screen in it, produce in it. Change wax later only with a fresh side-by-side test.

Stage 2 — first production in 100 g

The 100 g bottle is where a tester becomes a product: six candles you can put a price on.

Once an oil passes, move it straight to 100 g. For most oils this is also where the per-gram price stops falling: 50 g and 100 g are usually the same rate, and above 100 g most oils are priced linearly. At 16 g per candle, 100 g makes six 200 g candles with 4 g spare, enough for a small launch batch of each scent. Here are three of the ten showing the three buying situations you will meet.

1
Value floral · biggest drop from tester to 100 g
British Rose Fragrance Oil
The tester costs ₹6.29 a gram and the 100 g ₹3.42, the steepest fall in the set. Past 100 g the 1 kg still saves 10.3% per gram, one of the 24 oils in the catalogue where buying bigger genuinely lowers the rate.
Pack Price Per gram 200 g candles at 16 g
15 g ₹94.40 ₹6.29 0.94

2
Fresh / aquatic · flat above 50 g
Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil
The fresh slot in the range. From 50 g upward Blue Ocean is priced at about ₹4.95 a gram at every size, so there is no rate reason to buy the 1 kg early. Buy the kilo when reorders make the 100 g inconvenient.
Pack Price Per gram 200 g candles at 16 g
15 g ₹93.22 ₹6.21 0.94
50 g ₹247.00 ₹4.94 3.12

₹79.20 of oil per candle at 100 g Buy Blue Ocean
3
Premium gourmand · the dearest of the ten
Dark Vanilla Fragrance Oil
The premium slot. At ₹126.40 of oil per candle, Dark Vanilla belongs in a range priced for it. Its tester premium is small, under 10%, so testing it costs almost the same per gram as producing it.
Pack Price Per gram 200 g candles at 16 g
15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.67 0.94
50 g ₹410.00 ₹8.20 3.12
100 g ₹790.00 ₹7.90 6.25
500 g ₹3,840.00 ₹7.68 31.25
1 kg ₹7,646.00 ₹7.65 62.50
₹126.40 of oil per candle at 100 g Buy Dark Vanilla

If all ten oils pass, stage 2 is ten 100 g bottles, 60 candles. You need 60 jars (₹4,248.00 for twelve packs of five White Matte Glass Jars), 11,040 g of wax plus a working 3–5% allowance (12 kg of Chunks as two 5 kg and two 1 kg packs, ₹7,188.00), and 60 wicks (₹354.00 as a 50-pack and a 10-pack). Buying the 5 kg Chunks rather than the 10 kg is deliberate: the 5 kg works out at ₹599.00 a kilo and the 10 kg at ₹599.90.

The full first order

Here is stage 2 priced both ways. If fewer oils pass, the oil, jar, wax and wick lines fall roughly in proportion; the per-candle figure stays about the same.

Stage 2 · 60 × 200 g candles at 8% · CSI live pricing, 24–25 September 2026
First production run if all ten oils pass
Item Quantity Chunks route CSI 464 route
Ten 100 g bottles 1,000 g of oil ₹4,764.24 ₹4,764.24

White Matte Glass Jar 12 × pack of 5 ₹4,248.00 ₹4,248.00
Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 60 (50 + 10) ₹354.00 ₹354.00
Total 60 candles ₹16,554.24 ₹15,455.04
Average material cost per candle ₹275.90 ₹257.58

Add stage 1 and your entire launch material spend, tools included, is ₹20,677.96 with Chunks or ₹19,448.16 with CSI 464. The average per-candle figure in stage 2 is higher than the per-candle table earlier because it includes the spare wax you bought as allowance. Labour, packaging, labels, freight and GST are on top of every figure here.

The expensive shortcut: the 1 kg of your favourite. New makers often buy one 1 kg of the scent they love most, on the assumption that the kilo is the cheap way to buy. For Lavender the 1 kg is ₹5.22 a gram against ₹5.40 at 100 g — a saving of ₹2.86 per candle. For Sandalwood there is no saving at all. Meanwhile ₹5,000 is locked in a single scent before a customer has bought one. Move to 1 kg when a scent reorders every month. Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oil for Soy Candle Making covers exactly when the kilo makes sense.
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. If your first range has to be on sale for the festive season, stage 1 needs to start now: a one-to-two-week cure plus a production run leaves very little slack. Send your ten oils and target quantities on WhatsApp and we will check stock on every size before you commit, and quote anything beyond the listed packs.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A starter page is the easiest place to oversell: bigger bottles, more oils, a kilo of everything. This plan does the opposite. It starts at 15 g, moves to 100 g only for oils that pass, and says plainly that for most oils the 1 kg is not cheaper per gram.

Every oil and wax price here comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar, test-pot and tool prices are from the 25 September 2026 pull and Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026. All ten oils have an in-stock 15 g and 100 g on the pull date. Per-gram, per-candle and bill totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The ten oils are a suggested starting spread based on family, price tier and position in the best-selling sort, not a ranking by performance; we have not published throw measurements. The 50 g test pots, 6/8/10% ladder, 200 g candle and cure times are working assumptions. For stock checks, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oils should I start with for a soy candle business?
Start with ten oils across different families rather than ten similar scents. Our suggested set is Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Citrus Lemon, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Apple Cinnamon and Jasmine. All have an in-stock 15 g and 100 g at CSI, and together cost ₹990.72 as testers.
How many fragrances should a new candle business launch with?
Screen ten and launch with the ones that pass, often five to eight. A smaller range of oils that perform well in your wax is easier to stock and reorder than ten average ones. The cost of screening all ten is ₹990.72 of oil.
How much fragrance oil do I need for my first soy candle batch?
At 8% in a 200 g candle, 16 g per candle. One 100 g bottle makes six candles with 4 g spare. Ten scents × six candles is 60 candles and 1,000 g of oil.
Is CSI 464 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks better for beginners?
Both are container soy waxes. CSI 464 is cheaper (₹507.40 a kilo, up to 10% load); Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo and allow up to 13%. At 8%, CSI 464 saves ₹16.85 per 200 g candle. Pick one and do all your testing in it.
Should I buy 1 kg fragrance oil when starting a candle business?
Not at the start. For most oils the 1 kg costs about the same per gram as the 100 g. Buy 1 kg when a scent reorders regularly, or when it is one of the 24 oils with a real kilo saving, such as British Rose (10.3%) or Jasmine (8.8%).
Does CSI sell a fragrance starter pack for soy candles?
No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack or starter set. You build your own from the 15 g sizes — the ten suggested here cost ₹990.72 — and we can help assemble the order on WhatsApp. The candle-making kits on the store are separate products and their fragrance contents are not published here.
Screen first, then produce
Ten 15 g testers, one wax, thirty pots. Then 100 g of whatever survives.
Ten starter oils for ₹990.72, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from ₹299.00, CSI 464 from ₹260.00, Eco wicks from ₹59.00 and White Matte Glass Jars at ₹354.00 for five. Send us your list and we will check every size is in stock before you order.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), one Eco Thin C1 wick and one White Matte Glass Jar, and exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. The 15 g premium is the 15 g per-gram price over the 100 g per-gram price. The three-pot 6/8/10% test ladder, one-to-two-week cure and 3–5% wax allowance are working assumptions, not specifications. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. "Best-selling" refers to the collection's best-selling sort order on the pull date; no sales figures are implied. No throw measurements are published for any oil. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
