Fibre vs Rattan × Consistency
Consistency is how little your bottles disagree with each other. CSI sells fibre reeds and publishes no consistency data, so this page does not declare a winner — it shows you how to measure the spread for both, in your own base and oil.
₹2,974.00
CSI materials for the reed comparison — two packs of 120 ml Gold bottles and 50 each of black and white fibre reeds, with your own base, oil and rattan · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Are fibre reeds more consistent than rattan? Not proven by any data we publish. Manufactured reeds can be more uniform than natural stems, and are often marketed that way. Measure it with four bottles of each.

How do I measure consistency? Coefficient of variation: the standard deviation of grams per day across bottles in one arm, divided by the mean. Do the same for room scores.

Does CSI sell rattan reeds? No. CSI sells black and white fibre reeds, 20.3 cm long. Use your own rattan as the comparison arm.

What does the test cost? ₹2,974.00 in CSI materials with your own base, oil and rattan (₹6,523.60 with everything bought). See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Whichever reed gives the tighter bottle-to-bottle spread in your base and oil is the more consistent one. Natural rattan can vary from stem to stem; manufactured fibre reeds can be more uniform; neither claim is a measurement. Test four bottles of each with everything else fixed.
Why: Consistency is spread, not average: two reed types can average the same release while one scatters bottle lives widely — which is what customers and label claims feel.
Method: One ready-made base and oil, twelve 120 ml bottles: four with CSI black fibre reeds, four with CSI white, four with your own rattan. Weigh on days 3–28, compute the CV of g/day and room score, and run a one-hour reed-to-reed climb test in a glass.
Consistency is a spread, not an average Illustrative weighings for two unnamed arms (X, Y) — not results for fibre or rattan · same mean, very different products 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 grams per day, one dot per bottle Arm X mean 1.95 CV 6.6% Arm Y mean 2.00 CV 30.3% Coefficient of variation (CV) = standard deviation ÷ mean of g/day across bottles in one arm. Arm X: 108 g lasts 51–60 days across its bottles. Arm Y: 42–83 days. Almost the same average, very different promise. Compare reed types on CV of g/day, CV of room score and the reed-to-reed spread of climb height in a glass — with at least four bottles per arm, same base, oil, bottle, fill and shelf.
Why consistency is a spread: two illustrative arms (not fibre or rattan results) with almost the same mean release but coefficients of variation of 6.6% and 30.3%, so the same 108 g fill lasts 51–60 days in one and 42–83 days in the other.
Straight answer
Should I use fibre reeds or natural rattan reeds with a ready-made diffuser base for more consistent fragrance performance?
Use whichever gives the tighter bottle-to-bottle spread in your own base and oil — and measure it, because no published data settles it. Natural rattan is a plant stem whose channels and treatment can vary between stems and suppliers, which is commonly cited as its main source of variation. Fibre reeds are manufactured, can be more uniform, and are often marketed that way; CSI sells black and white fibre reeds, 20.3 cm long, but publishes no consistency, wicking or diameter data, and does not sell rattan. Consistency is a spread, not an average: two reed types can release the same on average while one scatters bottle lives widely. So hold a ready-made base and oil constant, make four 120 ml bottles with each reed — CSI black fibre, CSI white fibre, your own rattan — weigh them on days 3 to 28, and compare the coefficient of variation of grams per day and of room scores. A one-hour climb test of ten reeds of each type in a glass shows the cause. The comparison costs ₹2,974.00 in CSI materials with your own base, oil and rattan.
One line: consistency is the spread between bottles — weigh four of each reed type with the base held still and let the CV decide.
CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan — so the honest test pits ours against yours. You need a 50-pack each of black fibre reeds (₹400.00) and white fibre reeds (₹450.00) and two packs of 120 ml Gold bottles (₹2,124.00), with your own rattan, base and oil.

"More consistent" is a measurable claim — measure it

We sell fibre reeds. That is exactly why this page will not tell you they are more consistent than rattan. It will show you how to find out.

Start with what each reed is. Natural rattan is a plant stem cut into lengths; liquid travels through its natural channels, and because it is a natural material, channel structure, density and any surface treatment can vary from stem to stem and from supplier to supplier — that is commonly cited as the main source of variation in rattan diffusers. Fibre reeds are manufactured: CSI's listing calls them "Premium Quality Engineered for Fragrance", sells them in black and white, gives a length of 20.3 cm, and suggests 6–8 reeds for a 50–100 ml bottle. A manufactured reed can be more uniform than a natural one, and fibre reeds are often marketed that way. But "can" and "often marketed" are not measurements. CSI publishes no wicking rate, diameter, residue behaviour or consistency data for its reeds, and we have not measured yours.

Consistency also means two things that are easy to mix up. One is bottle-to-bottle consistency: if you make twenty identical diffusers, how similar are their release rates and room scores? That is what a customer experiences, and what you need if your label says how long a bottle lasts. The other is reed-to-reed consistency: within one pack, do the reeds draw liquid at similar rates? It is the cause of the first. This page measures both, against a ready-made base held constant — Pure Performance Base with British Rose at 20% in 120 ml Gold bottles, 8 reeds each — so that any difference belongs to the reeds. If you are still choosing a base, which reed diffuser base to buy and making a 100 ml diffuser with a ready-made base are the pillars.

The CSI principle
Consistency is the spread between bottles, not the average of them. Compare reed types on how much they vary, with the base held still.
Four bottles per arm, the same base, oil, bottle and shelf, weighed on the same days. The reed with the tighter spread is the more consistent one — in your liquid.

How to measure consistency: the coefficient of variation

Averages hide the problem you are trying to solve. Two arms can average the same grams per day while one arm's bottles all sit close together and the other's are scattered from slow to fast. The simple statistic that captures this is the coefficient of variation: the standard deviation of the values divided by their mean, usually written as a percentage. Work it out for grams per day across the bottles in each arm, and again for room scores. A spreadsheet does it with STDEV and AVERAGE; a calculator with a standard-deviation key will too.

ILLUSTRATIVE weighings for two unnamed arms — not results for fibre, rattan or any CSI product; they show the arithmetic only
Same mean, different consistency
Arm X (illustrative) Arm Y (illustrative)
g/day, four bottles 1.8, 2.0, 1.9, 2.1 1.3, 2.4, 1.7, 2.6
Mean 1.950 2.000
Standard deviation 0.129 0.606
Coefficient of variation 6.6% 30.3%
Life of a 108 g fill across the bottles 51.4–60.0 days 41.5–83.1 days

That last row is why consistency matters commercially. If you print "lasts about six weeks" on a label, every bottle needs to get there, not the average one. A wide spread forces you to promise the weakest bottle's life or accept complaints from the fastest bottles' customers. Decide your acceptance line before you test — for example, "CV of g/day under 15% across four bottles" (a labelled working choice; no industry figure exists) — and judge both reed types against the same line.

The reed-to-reed glass test
Stand 10 reeds of each type, straight from the pack, in an open glass of your blend. After one hour, mark how far the darkened band has climbed on every reed, and measure each in millimetres. Work out the mean and the CV of climb height for each type. A pack whose reeds climb to very different heights will make bottles that behave differently — this is the cause, and it takes an hour.

The common mistake: comparing one rattan bottle with one fibre bottle. One bottle of each tells you nothing about consistency — it is a single draw from each spread, and the lucky one wins. Fix: at least four bottles per arm, reeds taken blind from the pack, positions rotated. Report the spread, not the winner.

What each reed costs per bottle — and what inconsistency costs

At CSI rates the 108 g of liquid costs ₹263.82 per bottle (21.6 g of British Rose at ₹3.42/g and 86.4 g of Pure Performance at ₹2.20/g at an example 1.00 g/ml; ₹273.82 to ₹254.78 across ±5% density), plus ₹106.20 for the bottle. The reed line is the only one that changes between arms.

Per bottle · 120 ml Gold · 8 reeds · CSI reeds at the 50-pack rate · rattan price is a LABELLED EXAMPLE, replace with your quote
Reed cost and bottle total
Reed Per reed 8 reeds Liquid + bottle + reeds
CSI fibre, black ₹8.00 ₹64.00 ₹434.02
CSI fibre, white ₹9.00 ₹72.00 ₹442.02
Rattan (example price) ₹6.00 (example) ₹48.00 ₹418.02

On these numbers, the difference between reed types is a few rupees per bottle against a liquid cost of ₹263.82. That puts the decision where it belongs: not on reed price, but on whether one reed type gives you a tighter spread of release and room score. A reed that saves ₹16.00 a bottle but forces you to promise the slowest bottle's life — or replace the fastest bottles' customers — is not cheaper. Equally, if your own rattan's CV is as tight as ours in your liquid, there is no consistency case for switching.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell the fibre reeds and not the rattan, so the comfortable thing to write would be that fibre is more consistent. We do not publish data that shows it, and we have not tested your own rattan. If the rattan arm comes out with a CV of release as tight as our fibre reeds', keep your own rattan. If they do not, you have the evidence — not our product description — for switching.
A consistent reed is one whose bottles disagree with each other least. Weigh four of each and let the spread decide.

The 50-reed packs are the per-reed sweet spot for both colours — from 50 up there is no further break. British Rose is one of the CSI oils with a real per-gram saving at volume (₹3.42/g at 100 g, ₹3.07/g at 1 kg), but three 100 g packs are the cheapest way to cover a test.

Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. If you are changing reed supplier for festive stock, a four-week consistency test will not finish in time; the one-hour reed-to-reed glass test and a 14-day weighing will. Use them to decide whether to switch now or after the season. Send us your own rattan details on WhatsApp if you want help planning it; larger reed quantities are quoted there, with no published volume discount beyond the listed packs.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. We sell fibre reeds and not rattan, so the easy line would be "fibre is more consistent". This page refuses it: CSI publishes no consistency data for its reeds, the illustrative spread is deliberately not attached to either reed type, and the decision rule says to keep your own rattan if it measures as well.

Base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every gram of oil and base, every millilitre-to-gram conversion, per-bottle liquid cost and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it. Densities used for conversions are labelled examples — none is published for any CSI base or oil.

Bottle counts per arm, rest periods beyond the base pages' 24–48 hours, weighing days, room-scoring scales and evaluator panels are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffuser throw. The 108 g fill, the 1.00 g/ml density, the ₹6.00 rattan price and the illustrative weighings are labelled examples you replace with your own figures; the CV acceptance line is your own choice. Frequently asked questions

Are fibre reeds better than rattan reeds?
Neither is better in general. Fibre reeds are manufactured and can be more uniform; rattan is natural and can vary by stem and supplier. Test both in your base and oil, four bottles each, and compare the spread of release and room scores.
Do fibre reeds last longer than rattan?
There is no published comparison for CSI's reeds. Compare both over four weeks: weigh the bottles for release rate and refresh some reeds at day 28 to see whether either type slows more.
Does CSI sell rattan diffuser reeds?
No. CSI sells fibre diffuser reeds in black and white, 20.3 cm long, in packs of 25, 50, 100 and 500. Some base pages mention rattan; that is a page inconsistency.
How many reeds should I use in a 120 ml reed diffuser?
CSI's reed page suggests 6–8 for a 50–100 ml bottle; for 120 ml, test a count against a control and weigh both. Keep the count fixed when you compare reed types.
Why do some of my reed diffusers smell stronger than others from the same batch?
Variation in reeds, fill weight, position and temperature are common causes. Measure the spread across bottles and test reeds from the same pack in a glass to see how evenly they climb.
Can I mix black and white fibre reeds in one diffuser?
You can, but if you are standardising a product, test the two colours separately first. If they behave differently in your liquid, mixing them adds variation.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)), as the base pages put it, "of total blend". Rattan price ₹6.00 per reed is a labelled non-CSI placeholder. Illustrative weighings X = [1.8, 2.0, 1.9, 2.1] and Y = [1.3, 2.4, 1.7, 2.6] g/day are not tied to any reed type and show the CV arithmetic only (sample standard deviation). Working practices: 4 bottles per arm, 10 reeds per type in the climb glass, reeds taken blind from the pack, positions rotated, 3% mixing allowance, weighing on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, blind 0–5 house scale; any CV acceptance line is the reader's choice. Rattan variability is described from general industry knowledge. CSI's Pure Performance page states: neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all fragrance families; start at 10%, up to a maximum of 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance; rest 24–48 hours before bottling; "flip reeds after the first hour". CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any reed diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; and no neck size or fill line for the Gold bottles. The five base pages are differentiated only by the fragrance families they say they are for — that is a starting point for a test, not a ranking. CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan. No IFRA percentage for any oil is stated here: the Category 10A limit on the oil's own IFRA certificate (ask CSI on WhatsApp) applies alongside the base page's 30% maximum, and the lower of the two wins. Costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
