How Do I Test Reed Diffuser Performance Over 30 Days Using Liquid Weight Loss, Fragrance Intensity, Reed Condition and Room Temperature?
Share
How often? Weigh on days 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 30; score on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 30; photograph reeds on days 0, 14, 30; temperature daily.
How many bottles? 3 per formula for a decision test, plus one capped no-reed bottle to check the scale and caps.
What does it cost? ₹4,320.00 in CSI materials for two formulas (₹4,674.00 with a scale). See the kit.
What a 30-day test has to prove
Every shorter test in this section screens one variable: reed count, flip behaviour, reed size, season, consumption, clarity. A 30-day test is different. It is the confirmation you run on the formula you intend to sell, against a control, before you print a life claim or send a bottle to a corporate client. It has to answer four questions together: does the room score hold over the month, does the bottle lose liquid at a rate that delivers the life you want, what state are the reeds in by the end, and is the liquid still clear. A formula that wins three of the four has not passed.
Room temperature runs underneath all four. A passive diffuser responds to its room, and a month can include warm days, cool nights, a monsoon spell or the first cold week of winter. You do not correct for temperature with a formula — CSI publishes no temperature behaviour for any base, and no simple correction is reliable — you record it, and you keep a control bottle in the same room so that both formulas meet the same weather. Temperature changes the absolute numbers; the control keeps the comparison fair.
The example is a two-formula comparison because that is the most common reason to run 30 days: two candidate bases for one oil. Lift Base's page lists jasmine among its florals; Softness Base's lists jasmine among its soft florals. Both are ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml. Neither page is evidence about how jasmine will behave in it, and CSI publishes no diffuser throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed. Comparing two bases on evaporation, throw, clarity, reed compatibility and cost sets out the comparison logic; this page is the measurement protocol behind it.
| Measurement | How | Unit or scale | What it proves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid weight loss | Bottle weighed with reeds in, cap off, same scale, same time of day — on days 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 30 | grams; g/day per interval | Life and consumption pattern |
| Fragrance intensity | Blind room score on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 30 | Your written house scale (example 0–5) | Whether scent holds across the month |
| Reed condition | Photograph reed tops against a white card on days 0, 14, 30; grade them | Example 0–3 reed grade | Darkening, stickiness, residue |
| Room temperature | Min/max room thermometer (not a CSI item), read daily | °C min / max / at reading | Context for every other number |
| Clarity | Liquid against white and black cards on days 0, 7, 14, 30 | C clear · H haze · L layers · D droplets · S sediment | That the liquid stays single-phase |
Setting up: bottles, room and rules
Three bottles per formula is the labelled working practice for a decision test (two is enough for a screen, as elsewhere in this section; a launch decision deserves three). Add one capped bottle filled with either blend and no reeds: it should not lose weight, and weighing it first each session checks both the scale and the caps. All seven bottles from one pack, one room, one shelf height, out of direct sun, away from fans, AC outlets, windows and doorways.

| Grade | What you see | What it may mean (commonly described) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Same as the dry reed apart from wetness | Clean delivery |
| 1 | Tips slightly darker than the stem | Normal build-up at the evaporating end |
| 2 | Tips clearly darker; slightly tacky to touch | Heavier components or residue collecting |
| 3 | Dark, sticky tips; liquid line visible well below the top | Delivery likely restricted — see dark, sticky reeds |
Then do the arithmetic for each bottle. Interval rate = (earlier weight − later weight) ÷ days between them. Liquid left at any reading = that reading − the bottle's empty weight − the dry reeds − the liquid the reeds hold (estimate it once by weighing a saturated spare bundle at day 2). Projected life = liquid left ÷ the average rate of the last two or three intervals. Here is the arithmetic with invented numbers, chosen only to show it and not a measurement of any CSI base: a bottle that weighed 650.00 g on day 2 and 578.44 g on day 30 lost 71.56 g in 28 days — 2.56 g/day — which from a 115 g fill projects to 45 days.
Reading thirty days of numbers
Plot each bottle's interval rate against the day, with the room's mean temperature underneath. Three shapes are common. A roughly steady rate after day 2 means the formula and reeds are delivering consistently; the average is a fair life estimate. A rate that falls steadily through the month while temperature stays level points at the reeds — tips loading up, delivery slowing — and usually shows as a rising reed grade. A rate that rises and falls with the thermometer means the room's weather is driving it; the comparison between formulas is still fair, because both met the same weather, but your life claim needs the season in it.
Intensity has its own shape. A score that is high in week one and drifts down is commonly described for many oils as lighter components leave first; strong for three days, then weak covers the early part of that curve. What matters for the decision is where the score sits from day 14 to day 30, because that is the product your customer lives with. Compare the two formulas on their day-14 to day-30 means, and on the spread between their three bottles — a formula whose three bottles disagree widely is less predictable even if its mean is higher.
| Line | Example pass rule (yours to set) | Lift | Softness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scent held | Mean score from day 14 to 30 at or above your pass line; no bottle below it | Pass / Fail | Pass / Fail |
| Life on target | Projected life at day 30 at or above your target (45 days in this example) | Pass / Fail | Pass / Fail |
| Reeds acceptable | Reed grade 2 or better at day 30 on all three bottles | Pass / Fail | Pass / Fail |
| Liquid clear | C at every clarity check | Pass / Fail | Pass / Fail |
| Consistent | The three bottles' day-30 rates within a spread you accept (example: ±15% of their mean) | Pass / Fail | Pass / Fail |
If both pass, choose on what remains: scent character your panel prefers, cost (identical here) and the reed grade. If one passes and one fails, the choice is made. If both fail on the same line, the base was not the variable that mattered — look at reeds, load or the oil, using the shorter screens in this section: reed count, flip dependence, excessive consumption and clarity. Comparing loads by throw, consumption and cost per day applies the same 30-day thinking to load.
Turning the result into cost per day
At production rates — Jasmine at ₹3.92 per g (1 kg) and either base at ₹2.20 per g (both are ₹1,099.00 per 500 ml; example density 1.00 g/ml) — the 115 g fill costs ₹292.44 in liquid in Lift and ₹292.44 in Softness. With the ₹106.20 120 ml Gold bottle and 6 black reeds at ₹8.00, the bottle is ₹446.64 in materials, before labels, box and labour. Divide by the projected life from your sheet and you have the materials cost per day of use.
| Projected life | Average loss that implies | Materials per day | Liquid per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 days | 3.83 g/day | ₹14.89 | ₹9.75 |
| 40 days | 2.88 g/day | ₹11.17 | ₹7.31 |
| 45 days | 2.56 g/day | ₹9.93 | ₹6.50 |
| 60 days | 1.92 g/day | ₹7.44 | ₹4.87 |
Because both bases cost the same here, the 30-day result decides on performance alone, which is the cleanest comparison you can run. Where two bases differ in price — Longevity is ₹1,296.00 per 500 ml against ₹1,099.00 for the other four — the cost per day of use is the fair way to compare them, because a dearer base that lasts longer can be cheaper per day. Is a more expensive base worth it? runs that comparison.

The decision rule
Apply on day 30, from the top. Stop at the first true line.
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| The capped check bottle lost weight | Scale or cap problem | Buy nothing. Fix it and re-run |
| Something changed mid-test | The month is not a fair comparison | Buy nothing. Restart |
| One formula passes all four lines; the other fails one | Clear winner | That base in 500 ml production quantity; print the life from the projection |
| Both pass | Either works | Choose on panel preference and reed grade; keep the other as a backup |
| Both fail the same line | The base is not the variable | Back to the screens: reeds, load, oil |
| Rates track temperature strongly | Season drives life | Print a seasonal life range; repeat in the opposite season |
Keep the sheet with the product file, keep one retained bottle of the winning batch sealed, and repeat a shorter check whenever a material changes. The systematic method for a weak diffuser uses this protocol as its final stage, and a reed diffuser quality-control checklist turns its lines into release checks. For the season, winter and summer show how to measure the swing.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer for a base seller is to quote a life figure. This page publishes none, because we have none: it gives you the protocol to measure your own, compares two of our bases that cost the same so the test decides on performance alone, and says plainly that we publish no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed.
Diffuser bases, fibre reeds, Gold bottles and measuring tools are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026; fragrance oils are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, ml-to-gram conversion, per-bottle cost, cost per day and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it, and every density used is a labelled example with its ±5% sensitivity.
Bottle counts per arm, weighing schedules, rest and hold checkpoints, room-scoring scales and allowances are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed-diffuser performance. The 115 ml fill, the 1.00 g/ml density, the 45-day target, the reed-grade and score scales, the pass lines and the invented day-2/day-30 weights are labelled examples. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)). Example formula: 115 ml fill in the 120 ml Gold bottle (labelled example) at an example blend density of 1.00 g/ml (±5% shown) = 115 g; at 20% = 23.0 g oil + 92.0 g base. Working practices: 3 bottles per formula plus one capped check bottle, 5% filling allowance, weighing on days 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 30, blind scores on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, reed photos on days 0, 14, 30, clarity on days 0, 7, 14, 30, daily min/max temperature (thermometer not a CSI item). The day-2 and day-30 weights in the worked arithmetic are invented. Per-bottle costs use Jasmine's 1 kg rate, 500 ml base prices at the example density, ₹106.20 per bottle and ₹8.00 per black reed. What CSI's product pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every reed & car diffuser base page gives a 10–30% fragrance range of the total blend and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance adds "20% recommended", a "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance" and "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity says to allow 2–3 hours before the first flip, to keep the bottle away from strong air currents, and that "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases". The fibre-reed pages state a length of 20.3 cm and that "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance", with more reeds for stronger throw and faster diffusion and fewer for subtler, longer-lasting results. The Gold bottle's variants are 50 ml and 120 ml (its text also says "50 and 100ml"); neck diameter and fill line are not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or SDS figure for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; and no IFRA percentage for any oil — ask on WhatsApp for the oil's IFRA certificate and read its Category 10A limit (reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A as commonly summarised in suppliers' IFRA guides; confirm on the certificate). The lower of the base page's 30% and the oil's Category 10A limit always wins. CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan, and does not sell DPG, Augeo, perfumer's alcohol, IPM, reducers or stoppers. Material costs exclude labour, labels, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
