Can Changing Fragrance Oil Change the Way a Candle Burns?

What has to be re-tested? Wick size, pool time, flame height, colour over three weeks, and throw at day 14. Those five. Everything else — wax, jar, add temperature, pour temperature, cure schedule — carries over unchanged if you genuinely changed only the oil.
How different can two oils be on paper? Very. Japanese Cherry Blossom states 6–13% for candles; Jasmine Fragrance Oil states up to 10% for soy and up to 6% for paraffin; Pink Crush states 8–10% in soy wax; and Gardenia tells you to add it below 98°C because its stated flash point is 98°C.
What does re-testing cost? A five-jar swap test on 120 g jars comes to ₹1,184.45 of materials — about 1% of a 500-candle production run at 150 g, which is ₹1,20,530 of materials on the same recipe.

What the oil is actually doing in the flame
The picture most makers carry is that wax is the fuel and fragrance is a passenger. It is a useful simplification for planning and a misleading one for troubleshooting. A lit candle works as a small pump: heat from the flame melts a shallow pool, capillary action draws that liquid up the wick, the heat at the top of the wick vaporises it, and the vapour burns. Everything in the pool goes up the wick together. At 8% load, 16 g of every 200 g candle is fragrance oil, and at the 13% ceiling some pages publish it is 26 g. The wick is lifting a mixture, and you changed the mixture.
Fragrance oils differ from each other in ways that matter to that pump. They differ in viscosity, which affects how readily the wick draws them. They differ in solubility in soy wax, which is why a load that sits happily in one oil sweats or separates in another. They differ in how much of their mass is volatile top-note material that leaves the pool early versus heavy base material that stays; the same 16 g can behave like more or less fuel depending on that split. And they differ in what they do to the wax's structure as it sets, which shows up as frosting, wet spots or a soft top rather than in the flame.
None of that is exotic chemistry and none of it needs measuring. It is simply the reason a change that looks like swapping one label for another produces a candle that reaches a full pool in ninety minutes instead of a hundred and fifty, or mushrooms at the ninety-minute mark when the old one never did. The mechanism also explains why the fix is almost never the load: it is usually the wick, because the wick is the component you sized for the old mixture.
What carries over and what does not
This is the table that saves you money, because most makers re-test either nothing or everything. Neither is right. If the only thing you changed is the fragrance oil, the left-hand column of your recipe is still valid and you should not spend a single jar re-proving it.

You do not have to take the mechanism on trust, because the suppliers' own pages already publish the consequence. If fragrance oils were interchangeable at a fixed percentage, every page would state the same number. They do not. Below are stated candle loads, quoted verbatim, from in-stock CSI oils — and the spread across them is the reason a swap changes the arithmetic of your candle before it changes anything else.

Notice what the right-hand columns mean in practice. Swapping an oil whose page allows 13% for one that allows 8% does not just cap your options — it changes the wax fraction of the candle from 174 g to 184 g. That is 10 g more wax and 10 g less oil in an identical jar. The candle is denser in wax, the pool holds a different mixture, and the wick that suited the first candle is now sized for a fuel blend that no longer exists. The percentage on the batch card looks like a small edit. The jar is a different product.
Why the wick is the thing that breaks first
A wick has one job: keep a melt pool of roughly the vessel's diameter, no deeper than it needs to be, without overheating. Pool area grows with the square of the radius, so diameter dominates everything. A vessel with a stated 6 cm diameter — the Amber Shiny Glass Jar states 120 gm capacity and 6 cm — asks the wick to hold a pool of about 28 cm². At 8 cm that becomes about 50 cm², nearly 1.8 times the area, for the same flame.

This is why the wick, not the load, is the first dial to touch after a swap. CSI lists Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each, which means testing one step up and one step down costs about ₹15.34 per jar. The five-jar swap test, costed
This is a re-test, not a full qualification: everything except the oil and the wick is held fixed, and two of the five jars are a control poured with the oil you are replacing. Total materials, using Japanese Cherry Blossom as the incoming oil and 120 g jars: ₹1,184.45, plus whatever remains of the old bottle you already own.
Three good reasons to change an oil, and one bad one
Because a swap costs a real test, it is worth being clear about when it is worth doing. Three reasons justify the ₹1,184.45 immediately. One very common reason does not.

The cost comparison at the heart of that table is worth stating plainly. A five-jar swap test is ₹1,184.45. Five hundred 150 g candles built on the same recipe — 138 g of wax and 12 g of oil each, in a ₹94.40 jar with a ₹5.90 wick — come to ₹1,20,530 of materials at ₹241.06 a candle. The test is a hundredth of the run. Nobody insures a lorry by weighing the driver, but every maker who has reworked five hundred candles has done the arithmetic once and never skipped a swap test again.

What to write down so the next swap is cheap
The first swap costs ₹1,184.45 and a fortnight. The fifth should cost less, because by then you should know how your wax and your jar behave when the oil moves. That only happens if each test leaves behind a comparable record. Keep it to one line per jar, in the same order every time, so two tests six months apart can be read side by side.
The line needs the incoming oil and its bottle size, the load and the base it was calculated on, the wax and its pack, the add and pour temperatures actually read, the wick and its size, the jar and its stated diameter, the pour date, the burn date, minutes to a full pool, flame height, soot, and throw at 30 and 120 minutes. Then one more field that most makers omit and everyone needs: what the control jar did. A number with no control is an anecdote.
