Candle Fragrance Oil Safety Guide for Professional Candle Makers
What should I get from my supplier for every oil? The SDS and, where you need it, IFRA documentation — both supplied by CSI on request via WhatsApp — plus whatever the product page states about load, cure, temperature and discolouration, saved as it read on the day you poured.
What goes on a candle besides the scent name? A batch or lot code, the net weight, and plain care information: burn on a heat-resistant surface, trim the wick before each burn, do not leave a burning candle unattended, keep away from children, pets and draughts, and stop burning while wax remains in the base. That is ordinary good practice in the trade, not a claim about any regulation.
What does a documented bench cost? ₹1,044 for a thermometer, a scale, stirring sticks, wick stickers and a wick holder — less than one 1 kg bottle of most fragrance oils.
Handling and decanting
Fragrance oil arrives concentrated. In a 200g candle at 8% it will be a sixteen-gram passenger; in the bottle it is the whole thing. Concentrated aromatic material is worth handling with the same unhurried care you would give to any strong liquid: over a surface you can wipe, in a container you can close, with your hands clean and your sleeves out of the way. It is not a dangerous job. It is a job that punishes hurry.
The habits below are ordinary trade practice rather than requirements, and every one of them costs nothing. Keep bottles closed, upright and labelled, away from heat sources, direct sunlight and any open flame — which in a candle workshop means away from the very thing you are making. Decant over a tray, not over the bench. Use one stirring stick per scent in a batch so you are not carrying last week's oud into this week's rose; Bamboo Stirring Sticks are ₹118 for five and ₹1,888 for a hundred, which makes one-per-scent affordable. Weigh into a tared vessel on a scale rather than pouring to a line. Wear gloves and eye protection if you prefer to, and keep food, drink and smoking out of the room as a matter of course. Wipe spills at once, because an unwiped spill is both a slip and a smell that will contaminate the next batch's assessment.
On storage, be careful about what you claim and what you assume. No CSI fragrance page states a shelf life or a storage specification, and this guide will not invent one. What is sensible general practice — cool, dark, closed, upright, decanted as little as possible — is sensible general practice, not a stated figure. Write the date you opened each bottle on the bottle, because that single act turns a vague worry about age into a fact you can check against your own test records.
Ventilation and the workspace
A candle workshop concentrates smells by design. That is fine for an hour and tiring for six, and a tired nose is a business problem as well as a comfort one: you cannot assess a cold throw, judge a cure or catch a wrong dose if you have been breathing the same scent all afternoon. Treat airflow as a working instrument rather than a nicety.
Practical general practice, none of it expensive. Work where air can cross the room — two openings rather than one, or an extractor fan positioned to pull away from you. Keep the melting station away from your assessment station, so the place where you smell a cured candle is not the place where 5 kg of wax is steaming. Take a break every hour on a long pour day and step outside; your nose resets faster than you expect. Keep one scent per session where the schedule allows, because two hot oils in one small room make both assessments unreliable. And if you have an open flame in the room for any reason, keep it and the fragrance bottles at opposite ends.
Equipment helps more than willpower here. A Mini Electric Wax Melter (1 litre) at ₹2,360 holds a controlled temperature in a closed vessel, which means less steam in the room and fewer minutes spent standing over it; one CSI buyer, Mohabatti Ki Dukaan, describes it simply as "Highly recommended for candle making. A Hot Air Gun at ₹531 fixes surface imperfections without a second full melt, which is one less heat cycle in the room per batch — Niharika S has been using hers "for the past 3 years". Neither is a safety device and neither is being sold here as one; they simply reduce the number of minutes you spend near hot, open wax.
Temperature discipline
Temperature is where fragrance handling, safety and product quality converge, and it is the one area where you should work strictly to published numbers rather than to feel. Every CSI wax page that states a band states it for a reason, and the bands differ enough that a habit learned on one wax will be wrong on another.

Then there is the oil's side of the argument, which needs handling precisely. A flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air under defined test conditions. It is a handling and classification figure. It is not a "burn-off" temperature, not a quality score and not a load limit. Across CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages, 18 publish a measured value, 32 carry only the line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" — a threshold for alcohol-based products, not a measurement of that oil — and 56 state nothing at all. So the professional position is straightforward: work to the wax page's stated band; where an oil page states a figure and an instruction, follow the page; where it states nothing, ask CSI for the SDS figure and file it rather than estimating.
Two real examples make the rule concrete. Gardenia Fragrance Oil states "Flashpoint 98°C" and then "This is a lower flashpoint than many fragrance oils - ensure you add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C" — a page telling you to let the wax fall before the oil goes in. Jasmine Fragrance Oil states "Flashpoint 185°C", comfortably above any candle-making temperature, and its page draws the conclusion that it is "one of the most technically reliable oils in the CSI range". Same range, same supplier, two different instructions. That is why the figure belongs on your spec sheet rather than in your memory. The pour-day routine
A routine is what stops safety from depending on how your day is going. Six steps, the same every time, whether you are pouring six candles or six hundred.
Labelling and candle-care information
Two different things belong on a finished candle: identification, so you and the customer know what it is, and care information, so it is used the way you tested it. The list below is ordinary trade practice, widely used by candle makers, and it is what we would put on our own candles if we made them. It is not a statement about what any law or standard requires of you, and you should confirm your own obligations for your own market with someone qualified.

Two things to avoid on a label, both of them tempting. Do not put a flash point on a candle: it is a handling figure for the raw oil, it is meaningless on a finished product, and on most oils you would be guessing. And do not describe your range with a compliance phrase you cannot evidence. If you want to say something about documentation, say what is true — that you hold the supplier's documentation for the fragrances you use and can produce it on request. That sentence is defensible, and it is more impressive to a serious stockist than any badge.
Testing as a safety practice
Everything above is preparation. A burn test is the only step that observes the actual product doing the actual thing, which is why it belongs in a safety guide and not only in a quality one. A candle is a small open flame in somebody's home, and the question "does this combination behave?" cannot be answered by any document — not the fragrance page, not the SDS, not the IFRA paperwork, not a review.
The unit under test is the combination: this wax, this wick, this fragrance, at this load, in this vessel. Change any one of the five and you have a new candle to observe. What you are watching for is a pool that reaches the glass in roughly two to three hours without the flame climbing, the glass overheating or the wick mushrooming — and then, separately, that the scent is what your label promises after a proper cure. Judge on soy at 14 to 21 days; the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and "ideally 1-2 weeks" before you even begin.
Three practices make a test worth the wax. Pour a control — an unscented jar, or the recipe you already sell — in the same batch, so you can tell the oil's effect from the day's. Burn in the conditions a customer will: a normal room, a normal surface, no fan pointed at it. And write it down on a sheet, one per jar, because a test you cannot read back in three weeks is a test you will run again. The nine records
Here are the nine in full, with where each comes from and what it saves you. Three come from your supplier, three from your bench and three from your shelf and your customers. A ruled notebook is enough to start; a spreadsheet is easier to search; neither costs anything today.
