Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil goes in a candle? Take the finished candle's weight and multiply by the load. At 8%, a 200 g candle takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax; a 150 g jar takes 12 g; a 100 g candle 8 g; a 70 g votive 5.6 g. At 6% those become 12 g, 9 g, 6 g and 4.2 g; at 10%, 20 g, 15 g, 10 g and 7 g.

What load should I start at? 8% on every CSI soy wax. It sits inside every stated band on the store — the bottom of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' stated 8–13%, comfortably below CSI 464's stated 10% ceiling, and inside the "6-10%" most CSI oil pages print for soy.

What is the maximum? Whatever your wax states, and nothing more. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: up to 13%. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468: up to 13%. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464: up to 10%. Eco Soy CSI 400 states no load at all — treat 8% as its working figure until your own burn test says otherwise.

Does more oil mean a stronger candle? Up to a point, then no. Wax holds only so much oil in solution, and the surplus sweats, separates and drowns the wick. The mechanism is in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker.
The short answer
The sum: oil in grams = finished candle weight × load ÷ 100. Wax is the rest. A 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax — weigh both, never measure by volume.
The two limits that decide your number: the ceiling stated on your wax (13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468, 10% on CSI 464) and the band stated on your oil's page (most CSI candle oils print 6–10% for soy). Use the overlap.
Where to start: 8%, one scent, one wick, two identical jars. Cure a fortnight, burn both, and only then decide whether to move to 10% — or down to 6%.

Bar length is the oil in grams at an 8% load, drawn to one scale, so the jump from a 200 g candle to a 500 g candle is 2.5× the oil in the same jar count. The bracketed pair is the same candle at 6% and at 10%. Every figure is finished-candle weight × load ÷ 100.

How many grams of fragrance oil should go into one candle?
Multiply the finished candle's weight by the load and weigh that out. At the series' working load of 8%, a 200 g candle takes 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax; a 150 g jar takes 12 g; a 120 g jar 9.6 g; a 100 g candle 8 g; a 70 g votive 5.6 g; a 500 g three-wick 40 g. Start at 8% because it is the only figure that sits inside every stated band CSI publishes: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8% to 13% with 10% recommended, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states up to 13%, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%, and most CSI candle-oil pages print a soy band of 6-10%Citrus Lemon and Roasted Coffee both do. Your working number is the overlap of those two statements, taken at its lower end and then earned upward by testing. Money-wise, 16 g of oil is ₹45.31 on Citrus Lemon at 1 kg pricing and ₹122.34 on Dark Vanilla, so one percentage point on a 200 g candle is worth between ₹5.66 and ₹15.29 — small per candle, ₹566 to ₹1,529 per hundred. Weigh it on a ₹354 scale; millilitres will not give you a repeatable load.
One line: candle weight × load ÷ 100 = grams of oil — start at 8%, never pass the ceiling printed on your wax, and let a cured burn test decide the rest.
Two things make a load repeatable rather than approximate: a Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354 and a Pen Thermometer at ₹354, because the load only counts if the oil goes in at the temperature your wax page states.

What the percentage is a percentage of

Two makers can both pour "8%" and put different amounts of oil in the jar. The percentage is not the problem — the base is.

A fragrance load is a weight percentage, and the number you multiply matters. This series, like CSI's own guide to throw, takes load as a share of the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% contains 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, and the two add up to the weight printed on your label. The other convention in common use is a share of the wax: weigh 184 g of wax and add 8% of that, which is 14.72 g. Both are legitimate and the gap is small in the middle of the range — but it is not zero, and it is worth knowing which one you are using before you compare your recipe with anybody else's. CSI's own product pages show both phrasings, which is a useful reminder that neither is a standard. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states its recommendation as "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight" with "10% Recommended". The CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages simply state "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Fragrance Load Up to 13%". Read on the wax basis, 13% of 174 g of wax would be 22.62 g rather than 26 g — so when you are deliberately working near a ceiling, the finished-candle figure is the more conservative of the two, which is why this guide uses it throughout.

The mistake: adding oil "on top" of a full jar of wax. If you fill the vessel with wax first and then stir in the oil, the candle is heavier than you planned and the load is lower than you think — and the jar may overflow on the pour. Work backwards instead: decide the finished weight the vessel holds, subtract the oil, melt only that much wax. A jar whose page states a 120 gm capacity, such as the Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹47.20 each, needs 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil at 8% — not 120 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil.

A note on vessels: most in-stock CSI jars state capacity in millilitres, not grams, and wax is lighter than water, so 200 ml is not 200 g of candle. Where a page states a gram fill — the 70 gram votives, the 120 gm amber jar, the 150 gram jars — plan from that. Where it states millilitres, pour one, weigh the finished candle, and use that weight from then on.

This is the table to print and stick above the melter. Oil is the finished candle weight × load; wax is the remainder. The last column is the number of that candle one 100 g bottle of oil will scent at 8%, which is the figure that tells you what size bottle to buy.

Worked out above: oil = candle × load ÷ 100; wax = candle − oil. So 200 × 0.08 = 16 g oil and 184 g wax; 120 × 0.08 = 9.6 g and 110.4 g; 500 × 0.13 = 65 g and 435 g. Bottle counts are 100 ÷ oil per candle, rounded down: 100 ÷ 16 = 6 candles of 200 g, 100 ÷ 9.6 = 10 jars of 120 g, 100 ÷ 4 = 25 tins of 50 g. Vessel weights shown are finished-candle weights, not jar volumes.

Two things fall out of the table. First, the 13% column is not 5% more oil than the 8% column — it is 62.5% more: 26 g against 16 g on a 200 g candle. Percentage points are small words for real quantities of a bought liquid. Second, oil goes furthest in small vessels: one 100 g bottle scents six 200 g candles or seventeen 70 g votives. Test a new scent in the smallest vessel you intend to sell.

Weigh, never measure
Fragrance oils differ in density, so a spoon, a cap or a measuring jug will not reproduce a load — and a load you cannot reproduce is not a recipe. Tare the container on a Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354), pour the oil in until the display reads the gram figure from the table, and write the actual number down rather than the one you intended. On a 100 g candle at 8%, half a gram either way is a 6% error in your load.

What your wax allows — the ceiling, not the target

The maximum is not a general candle-making fact; it is a property of the wax in your bag, stated by the wax maker, describing how much oil that wax holds in solution. Four in-stock CSI waxes publish a figure. The rest publish nothing, which is information too: it means your own burn test is the only evidence you will have, so start low. The table below is every candle wax CSI lists in a soy, coconut-soy or paraffin form, with what its page actually says.

A ceiling is a formulation limit, not a regulatory one — and not a recommendation. "Up to 13%" describes the most oil that wax has been formulated to carry. It does not say the candle smells best there, and it says nothing about the safety of any particular oil in any particular product, which is a matter for your fragrance supplier's documentation and your own testing. Two practical consequences: never exceed the figure printed on the wax you actually bought, and never carry a load across waxes. A 13% recipe proven in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is 3 percentage points over the stated ceiling the moment you pour it into CSI 464.

What the oil's own page says — the second half of the answer

Makers read the wax page and stop. The oil page is often more specific, and occasionally it disagrees.

Most CSI candle-oil listings publish a usage band of their own, and a few go further and tell you what the low end and the high end are for. This is the most under-used information on the store, because it is written per scent rather than per wax: a light citrus and a dense gourmand are not the same job at the same number. Every quote below is the wording on that product's own page.

Notice the Autumn row. Its page prints 7-11% for candles, which is higher at the top than the usual 6-10%, and 11% is above the ceiling stated for CSI 464. That is exactly the situation the overlap rule is for: in CSI 464 your maximum is 10%, whatever the oil page allows; in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 you could go to 11% because both waxes state 13%. The lower of the two stated numbers always wins, and there is no version of this where you take the higher one because it suits you.

What "IFRA" on a page does and does not tell you about your load
Many CSI oil pages carry IFRA wording; some do not mention it at all. An IFRA standard governs maximum use levels by product category for consumer safety — it is not a throw rating and it is not the same thing as your wax's formulation ceiling. Treat the wax's stated load as the formulation limit, the oil page's band as the supplier's usage guidance, and your burn test as the performance evidence. Where to start, in five steps

This is the whole method, and it takes one afternoon plus a fortnight of waiting. It is written for two jars because two jars is the smallest test that can tell you anything: one load, one wick, two burn dates.

Fix the finished weight of the candle, not the volume of the jarPour one jar of plain wax to the fill line you like, let it set, and weigh it. That number — 118 g, 206 g, whatever it is — is the base for every calculation afterwards. Jars whose pages state a gram fill save you this step: the Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram at ₹31.86 each and the Amber Shiny Glass Jar at 120 gm are stated in grams.

Read both ceilings and take the lower oneWax page first: 13%, 10%, or nothing stated. Oil page second: usually 6-10%, sometimes 6-9%, 7-11% or 8-10%. Your permitted maximum is the lower of the two. Write both quotes on the recipe card with the product names, because in three months you will not remember which wax the 13% belonged to.

Pour your first pair at 8%Weigh the wax and the oil separately: for two 200 g candles that is 368 g of wax and 32 g of oil. Melt, and add the fragrance in the band the wax page states — 80–90°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Eco Soy CSI 400, which also specifies stirring for two minutes. Stir the full two minutes by the clock; oil that is dispersed rather than dissolved is the commonest cause of a load that "does nothing". Pour at the stated pour temperature and log what the thermometer actually read.

Cure before you judge — this is where most load decisions go wrongThe Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Standard practice for soy containers is 14–21 days, with citrus and fresh blends settling earliest and woody, gourmand and oriental oils still improving at three weeks. Lids on, in a carton, out of sunlight. A candle judged weak on day two is not a candle that needs more oil; it is a candle that has not finished. Burn one jar, then decide the direction — up, down or holdBurn for three hours in a closed room with nothing else scented in it. Record minutes to a full melt pool, throw at 30 and 120 minutes, and any soot, sweating or oily film. Full pool, clean burn, throw you would pay for: hold at 8%. Clean burn but quiet at two hours: step to 10% if both your wax and your oil allow it, and re-test. Change one number at a time. The temptation after a quiet first burn is to raise the load, change the wick and swap the wax together. Do that and a better candle teaches you nothing you can repeat. Load is the easiest variable to isolate because it costs nothing but oil: pour two jars at 8% and two at 10% from the same melt batch, the same wick and the same day, and burn them side by side after the same cure. How much oil to buy for the candles you plan to pour

Once the grams are settled, the purchase is arithmetic. Each card below shows every size the oil ships in, the price per kilo at each, and how many 120 g jars at 8% — 9.6 g of oil each — a pack will scent. The three are chosen for what their pages state about load rather than for being the cheapest: one fresh citrus, one gourmand and one earthy Indian direction with unusually specific dosing guidance.

The cheapest per gram of the single-note candle oils CSI lists in a full size ladder, and the page is unusually clear about what the ends of its band do: strength is described as "Strong - vibrant at lower loads, lively and full at higher", with stated notes of "Zesty lemon, lime" over "Bright grapefruit, orange" and a "Tangy mandarin" base. The page also states a soy load of 6-10%, a paraffin load of 6-8%, approximately 0% vanillin — so no discolouration risk in white wax — and a cure of 48–72 hours before burn testing. At 8% in a 200 g candle you are spending ₹45.31 on fragrance, which makes it the sensible oil to run your first load comparison on.

Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil
A base-weighted gourmand, which is the profile that survives soy's cooler melt pool best: stated notes are "Fresh coffee beans" over "Dark chocolate, rich espresso" with "Vanilla, caramel" underneath. Its page states Soy Wax 6-10% and Paraffin Wax 6-8%, and describes the strength as something to dose deliberately — "use a small amount for subtle, more for robust". One CSI buyer, Arminder Kaur, writes that the "Coffee fragrance is quite strong and feels like yummy", which is a reasonable hint that this is a scent to start at the bottom of its band rather than the top.

The clearest dosing instruction on any CSI oil page, and the reason this post exists: "Use 6-7% for a subtle, grounding earth note in the background, or increase to 9-10% for a bolder petrichor presence." That is a supplier telling you the load changes the role of the scent, not just its volume. Stated notes are "Fresh rain, soft soil" over "Earthy patchouli" and "Damp woods, light musk". It is the most expensive oil on this page per gram, which makes the choice of load a real cost decision: 6% in a 200 g candle is ₹107.52 of oil, 10% is ₹179.20. One CSI customer, Renu, called the Gilli Mitti and Pumpkin Spice scents "amazing and authentic".

What each percentage point actually costs

A load is a scent decision and a cost line at the same time. On a 200 g candle, one percentage point is 2 g of oil — trivial as a weight, and anything from ₹5.66 to ₹15.29 depending on which bottle it comes out of. Across a hundred candles that same point is ₹566 to ₹1,529, which is usually the difference between a comfortable margin and an awkward one.

The 13% column carries a caution: two of those five oil pages state a soy load of up to 10%, so 13% is off the table for them whatever the wax permits. The two limits are independent and you need both to say yes. Where both do allow it, remember what you are buying — on Dark Vanilla, 8% to 13% adds ₹76.46 per candle, ₹7,646 per hundred, for a step no customer has yet told you they can smell.

How much fragrance oil do I put in a 200 g candle?
16 g of oil and 184 g of wax at an 8% load. At 6% it is 12 g of oil, at 10% it is 20 g, and at 13% — permitted only on a wax that states 13%, such as Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 — it is 26 g. Weigh both parts rather than measuring the oil by volume, because oils differ in density. If your jar is stated in millilitres, pour one, weigh the finished candle and use that weight as your base.
How much fragrance oil per kilo of soy wax?
Because the load is a share of the finished candle, the oil for a given weight of wax is wax × load ÷ (100 − load). One kilo of wax takes 63.83 g at 6%, 86.96 g at 8%, 111.11 g at 10% and 149.43 g at 13%. A 100 g bottle therefore covers a kilo of wax at 8% with a little to spare, and a 500 g bottle covers about 5.75 kg. Is 10% fragrance oil too much for soy wax?
Not on a wax that states it. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8% to 13% with 10% recommended, CSI 468 states up to 13%, and CSI 464 states up to 10% — so 10% is inside all three, and is CSI 464's ceiling. It is too much for a wax whose page states nothing until your own cured burn test says otherwise, and it is too much for an oil whose page stops at 9%, such as Fresh Strawberries. Check both pages, take the lower figure, and test before you commit a batch.
How much fragrance oil for a 100 g candle?
8 g at 8%, with 92 g of wax — or 6 g at 6% and 10 g at 10%. Small candles are the cheapest place to test a load: one 100 g bottle of oil scents twelve 100 g candles at 8%, so two loads across two scents fit inside a single bottle. At this size half a gram of error is a 6% swing in the load, so weigh on a scale that reads to 0.1 g rather than 1 g. Can I use less fragrance oil than the wax's recommended load?
Yes. A ceiling is a maximum, not a minimum, and several CSI oil pages explicitly describe the low end as a legitimate choice rather than a compromise — Chocolate Fudge says "Use 6-7% for a subtle chocolate warmth" and Gilli Mitti says 6-7% gives "a subtle, grounding earth note in the background". Lower loads suit bathrooms, bedsides, small rooms, and gift sets where several candles burn together. What you cannot do is go under and expect the same throw in a large room.
How do I know if my fragrance load is too high?
The candle tells you, usually within the cure. Watch for an oily film or beading on the surface, oil pooling around the wick, a wick that struggles to stay lit or drowns in its own pool, and a melt pool that never reaches the glass. Those are signs the wax cannot hold what you added, and adding more makes them worse, not better.
