Scaling · Buy by demand
When ten scents out of thirty carry three-quarters of your sales, buying every oil in the same pack size is the most expensive habit in your business. It starves your bestsellers and feeds your slow sellers. The fix is arithmetic: candles sold, then grams a month, then the pack that covers about six weeks.
₹29,304.00
cash released in the worked example by buying 30 oils by demand instead of 500 g each · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How should I change purchase quantities when 10 of 30 scents sell? Split scents into three tiers by candles sold. Buy the top 10 in 500 g or 1 kg, sized to about six weeks of use; the next 10 in 100 g multiples; the last 10 in 50 g while you decide whether to keep them. In our example this frees ₹29,304.00.

How do I turn candle sales into grams of oil? Candles sold a month × oil per candle × a wastage allowance. A 200 g candle at 8% holds 16 g, so 40 candles a month is 665.6 g of oil with a 4% allowance (a working assumption; plan 3–5%).

Is the 1 kg cheaper per gram for my bestsellers? Sometimes. British Rose is ₹3.07/g at 1 kg against ₹3.42/g at 100 g, a real saving. Jasmine's 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g packs. Buy the kilo for cover, not for price, unless the oil is one of the 24 with a real break.

What about my slow scents? Buy them in 50 g. The 50 g and 100 g cost the same per gram for most oils (median difference 0.0%), so the small pack costs you nothing extra and stops 15 months of oil sitting on a shelf. See the B and C tiers.
The short answer
Method: Rank by candles sold (90 days) → grams a month = candles × 16 g × 1.04 → order ≈ 1.5 months of use → round to a listed pack.
Example: 400 candles a month, 30 scents: equal 500 g buying ties up ₹78,600.40 in 15.0 kg of oil; buying by demand ties up ₹49,296.40 in 9.9 kg.
Price breaks: Per gram, 1 kg is within ±1% of 100 g for 52 of 91 oils; 24 oils save 5% or more. The step that always matters is 15 g → 50/100 g.

Thirty scents, one month of sales — and the pack each tier should be bought in A · top 10 · 295 candles (73.75%) B · next 10 · 84 (21.00%) C · last 10 · 21 (5.25%) Buy 500 g or 1 kg · ~6 weeks per order Buy 100 g multiples Buy 50 g · review to cut Example month: 400 candles of 200 g at 8% (16 g oil each). Bar height = candles sold per scent.
The sales split is an example, not CSI data: 400 candles across 30 scents, with the top ten selling 295. Replace the bars with your own last 90 days. The shape is what matters. Almost every multi-scent range has a steep head and a long flat tail, and each part of the curve needs a different pack size.
Straight answer
I have 30 candle fragrances but most sales come from 10 — how should I change my fragrance oil purchasing quantities?
Stop buying every scent in the same size. Rank all 30 by candles sold over the last 90 days, then convert each scent's monthly sales into grams: candles × 16 g (a 200 g candle at 8%) × 1.04 for pour loss and test burns. Buy the top ten in 500 g or 1 kg packs, sized to roughly six weeks of use. Buy the middle ten in 100 g multiples, and buy the bottom ten in 50 g while you decide which to drop. In our worked example of 400 candles a month, buying 500 g of every scent ties up ₹78,600.40 and still leaves Lavender short after about three weeks. Buying by demand ties up ₹49,296.40, frees ₹29,304.00 and puts the stock where the sales are. The small packs cost you almost nothing extra. For most CSI oils, 50 g, 100 g and 1 kg cost within about 1% per gram, so the unequal plan is cheaper in cash and no dearer per candle. Re-rank every month, and treat a scent that falls into the bottom ten for a second quarter as a candidate for discontinuing cleanly.
One line: match each scent's pack to its sales, not to the pack you bought last time.
Your top scent is the one that should never run out. At 40 candles a month, Lavender uses about 665.6 g of oil. The 1 kg at ₹5,221.00 covers about six weeks at ₹5.22/g, against ₹5.40/g for the 100 g. British Rose is the rare oil where the kilo is also cheaper: ₹3,068.00 for 1 kg (₹3.07/g), 10.3% below its 100 g rate.

Rank the 30 by candles, not by feel

Every candle maker knows which scents sell. Most of them are wrong about the order after the top three.

The reason is memory. You remember the scent a customer praised, the one you reordered in a panic and the one you love pouring. None of that is demand. The only reliable signal is finished candles sold per scent, counted from your order records over the last 90 days and divided by three. Ninety days is long enough to smooth out one big gifting order and short enough to reflect this season's taste. If you sell through several channels, add them together before you rank. A scent that is quiet online can be the backbone of your market stall.

Here is the example we use throughout this page. It is illustrative, not CSI sales data: a maker producing 400 candles a month across 30 scents, all in a 200 g container at an 8% load. The top ten sell 295 candles between them, the next ten 84 and the last ten 21. Your split will differ. Almost everyone's has the same shape, though: a short head that carries most of the volume and a long tail that carries most of the SKUs.

Example month · 400 candles · 200 g at 8% · illustrative sales, replace with yours
The three demand tiers
Tier Scents Candles a month Share of candles Oil a month (16 g × 1.04) Buying rule
A — head Ranks 1–10 295 73.75% 4,908.8 g 500 g or 1 kg, ≈ 6 weeks per order
B — middle Ranks 11–20 84 21.00% 1,397.8 g 100 g multiples, ≈ 6 weeks per order
C — tail Ranks 21–30 21 5.25% 349.4 g 50 g, review every quarter
Total 30 400 100.00% 6,656.0 g —

The tier boundaries do not have to fall at ten and twenty. Draw them where the sales curve bends. A useful test is to ask, for each scent, whether its monthly oil use is closer to a 1 kg pack or to a 50 g pack. Anything using more than about 330 g a month behaves like a production scent. Anything using less than about 50 g a month is still behaving like a test. The middle is where most indecision lives, and 100 g is the size that suits indecision.

Count lost sales too
If a scent was out of stock for two weeks of the 90 days, its sales figure is too low. Scale it up by the days it was available (for example, 60 candles in 76 selling days is about 71 in 90). Otherwise a bestseller you kept running out of will look like a middle-tier scent, and you will under-buy it again. That loop is how makers end up placing emergency orders, which I'm Constantly Placing Emergency Raw-Material Orders — How Do I Calculate Minimum Stock Levels for Wax, Fragrance, Wicks and Jars? deals with directly.

From candles to grams to packs

Once a scent has a monthly figure, the purchase is arithmetic. Multiply candles by the oil in one candle. At 200 g and 8% that is 16 g, the working load for this series. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%, so 8% sits comfortably inside both. Add a wastage allowance, and plan 3–5% for pour loss and test burns as a working assumption. We use 4%. Then decide how many months one order should cover. We use about six weeks (1.5 months), which keeps one order in hand while the next is on its way without parking a season of oil on the shelf. Round up to the nearest listed pack:

Roasted Coffee 20 332.8 g 499.2 g 500 g ₹1,890.00 1.50 months 1.50 months

Read the last two columns together. Under the old habit of buying 500 g of everything, the top four scents ran dry in less than a month. Lavender lasted 0.75 of a month, about three weeks. That is where the emergency orders come from. Under the demand plan, every A-tier scent gets between one and just under two months of cover. The four biggest move to the kilo and the next six stay at 500 g. The ten A-tier packs cost ₹30,778.40, against ₹22,970.40 for ten 500 g packs. You spend more on the head, and you should.

Spending more on your bestsellers is not overbuying. It is buying what you already know you will pour.

Does the kilo save money on these oils? Mostly it saves trips, not rupees. Using CSI's listed prices: Lavender's 1 kg is ₹5,221.00 against ₹5,240.00 for two 500 g packs, a ₹19.00 difference. British Rose's is ₹3,068.00 against ₹3,186.00, which saves ₹118.00. For Fresh Strawberries the two routes cost exactly the same, ₹3,540.00. Jasmine's kilo, at ₹3,923.00, is ₹1.00 dearer than two 500 g packs at ₹3,922.00. The real price step on the catalogue is at the other end. The 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram over the same oil's 100 g. Above 100 g, most oils are priced in a straight line. For a top-five-only version of this decision, I Have 20 Fragrances but Only Five Are Bestsellers — Should I Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oils Only for Those Five and Keep Smaller Quantities of the Rest? goes deeper.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more 1 kg packs if we told you to put every scent on the kilo. Do not. A 1 kg of a scent that sells two candles a month is 30 months of oil. It is cash you cannot spend on the scent that is actually running out. For most of our oils the kilo is not cheaper per gram anyway: 52 of 91 oils that list both sizes are within 1% of the 100 g rate. Buy the kilo only where your own sales use it within about two months.

What equal buying really costs

Now price the whole range both ways. For the A tier we use the real CSI prices above. For the B and C tiers we use the catalogue medians rather than naming twenty more oils: the median in-stock 500 g is ₹2,781.50, the median 100 g ₹629.00 and the median 50 g ₹342.20. These are medians across different sets of oils, so treat them as an order-of-magnitude figure for the tail rather than a quote for any one scent.

Worked example · A tier at real prices, B and C tiers at catalogue medians · 24 September 2026
Equal 500 g buying against demand-based buying
Equal buying (500 g × 30) Demand-based buying Difference
A tier (10 scents) ₹22,970.40 · 5.0 kg ₹30,778.40 · 7.0 kg ₹7,808.00
B tier (10 scents) ₹27,815.00 · 5.0 kg ₹15,096.00 · 2.4 kg (24 × 100 g) -₹12,719.00
C tier (10 scents) ₹27,815.00 · 5.0 kg ₹3,422.00 · 0.5 kg (10 × 50 g) -₹24,393.00
Total ₹78,600.40 · 15.0 kg ₹49,296.40 · 9.9 kg -₹29,304.00

The demand plan holds 9.9 kg of oil instead of 15.0 kg and releases ₹29,304.00. More important is where the oil sits. Under equal buying, a C-tier scent selling two candles a month gets 500 g, which is 15 months of stock. That oil ages on the shelf while your Lavender customers wait. Under the demand plan the same scent gets 50 g, about six weeks, and the rupees go to the scents that turn over.

Your own total will not match ours, because your tail oils are not the medians. The direction will match, though. The money you free is roughly the price of the oil you were buying for scents that could not use it. If you want to know how much of that freed cash to keep as cash rather than put into wax or jars, Should I Keep More Money in Cash or Use It to Buy Larger Quantities of Candle Raw Materials at Better Prices? and My Candle Business Is Growing but All My Cash Keeps Going Back into Wax, Fragrance Oils and Jars — How Much Raw-Material Inventory Should I Actually Hold? work through the holding decision.

The CSI principle
Every scent earns its pack size every month.
A pack size is not a permanent attribute of a fragrance. It is a monthly decision based on the last 90 days. Lavender earns the kilo because it pours 40 candles a month. The day it pours 12, it goes back to 100 g, with no sentiment involved.

The B and C tiers

The middle tier is where most of the judgement lives. These scents sell steadily but slowly: in our example 6 to 12 candles a month, or roughly 100 g to 200 g of oil. Six weeks of that is 150 g to 300 g, so two or three 100 g bottles per order. Why not a 500 g pack? At 6 candles a month, 500 g lasts five months. At 12 a month it still lasts two and a half. The 500 g would lower the price per gram only for the minority of oils with a real break above 100 g, and it would triple the time the oil waits.

Buying 100 g multiples also keeps a door open. If a B-tier scent climbs into the top ten, the next order moves up a size. If it slides into the tail, you have not already bought three months of it. Several bottles of the same batch also let you open one at a time, so the rest stay sealed. That is a sensible habit with any fragrance oil, though CSI does not publish a shelf-life figure. Check the oil's product page or ask on WhatsApp if you plan to hold stock for a long period.

The tail is simpler. A scent selling one to three candles a month uses 16.6 g to 49.9 g of oil. Buy the 50 g, which costs the same per gram as the 100 g for most oils (median difference 0.0%), or the 15 g where a scent sells about one candle a month and a 15 g is listed. The 15 g costs more per gram, a median 23.1% premium over 100 g. At one candle a month, though, paying ₹20 or so extra per bottle is cheaper than holding oil you may never pour.

Months of cover from one pack · oil per candle 16 g + 4% allowance
Why the tail should never be bought in 500 g
Candles a month Oil a month 50 g lasts 100 g lasts 500 g lasts 1 kg lasts
1 16.6 g 3.0 months 6.0 months 30.0 months 60.1 months
2 33.3 g 1.5 months 3.0 months 15.0 months 30.0 months
3 49.9 g 1.0 months 2.0 months 10.0 months 20.0 months
6 99.8 g 0.5 months 1.0 months 5.0 months 10.0 months
12 199.7 g 0.3 months 0.5 months 2.5 months 5.0 months
20 332.8 g 0.2 months 0.3 months 1.5 months 3.0 months
40 665.6 g 0.1 months 0.2 months 0.8 months 1.5 months
The quiet mistake: dropping a scent without looking at the tail as a group. Individually, each C-tier scent looks harmless. Two candles a month, a 50 g bottle, a few hundred rupees. Together, ten of them are a third of your shelf space, a third of your labels and a third of your photography for 5.25% of your candles. Hold them to a rule. A scent that stays in the bottom ten for two consecutive quarters goes to the discontinuation plan, unless it has a job, such as a seasonal scent or a scent a stockist insists on.

Seasonal scents are the main exception. A cinnamon or pumpkin profile might sit in the tail from March to August and then jump to the head in October. Rank seasonal scents against their own season, not against the whole year. If you are planning festive quantities now, My Candle Sales Double During Diwali — How Early Should I Start Increasing Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Before the Season? works back from Diwali on 8 November 2026 to the dates each order has to be placed.

The monthly re-rank

The plan only works if the ranking moves with your sales. Once a month, which can be the day you do your accounts, run this routine. It takes about half an hour with a spreadsheet, and it replaces most of the guesswork in your fragrance purchasing.

1
Pull 90 days of candles sold per scentCount finished candles, not orders. A gift set with three scents counts once for each scent inside it. Adjust for any days a scent was out of stock, as shown in the tip above.
2
Convert to oil per monthCandles ÷ 3 × oil per candle × 1.04. If you sell more than one size, work in grams of oil rather than candles. A 100 g candle at 8% uses 8 g, not 16 g. I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production? shows how to keep every material on the same unit.
3
Re-draw the tiersSort by oil per month. Mark the point where the curve flattens. Anything above about 330 g a month is an A-tier scent, anything below about 50 g is C-tier, and the rest is B-tier.
4
Set each scent's order sizeOrder ≈ 1.5 months of use, rounded up to a listed pack. A tier gets 500 g or 1 kg, B tier 100 g multiples, C tier 50 g or 15 g. Check each oil's product page for in-stock sizes first. A pack that is out of stock is not an option.
5
Check whether the kilo is cheaper for this oilIf the oil is one of the 24 with a 1 kg saving of 5% or more (British Rose, Jasmine, Mango Coconut and Cinnamon Vanilla are among them), the kilo becomes attractive a little earlier. For oils priced flat, choose the size that fits the cover.
6
Flag moversAny scent that changed tier gets its next order at the new size. Any scent that has been C-tier for two quarters gets a decision. Any scent over about 1 kg a month is ready for a production quote on WhatsApp, because CSI's listed packs stop at 1 kg per oil.

Setting the order size is not the same as setting the point at which you reorder. The re-rank tells you how much to buy. When to buy depends on how fast each scent falls and how long delivery takes, and fast and slow scents need different trigger levels. The rest of the candle does not care which scent it is. Wax, wicks and jars are shared across all 30 scents, so buy them against total candles, not per scent. In the example that is 400 candles a month: 73.6 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 184 g each, 400 Eco Candle Wicks and 400 White Matte Glass Jars. That is why Should I Buy Wax in Bulk Before Fragrance Oil Because Wax Is Used Across Every Candle While Individual Fragrances Sell at Different Rates? argues for buying wax ahead of individual oils.
If a scent is using more than a kilo a month, the listed packs have run out of road for it. Several kilos of one oil, or a mixed order across your A tier, is quoted on WhatsApp. No volume discount figure is published, so send your scents and monthly grams and ask. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, so festive A-tier quantities are worth pricing now.

When your sales data lies

A ranking is only as honest as the sales behind it, and candle sales have four ways of misleading you.

Stockouts hide demand. A scent you could not sell for three weeks looks weaker than it is. Adjust for selling days before you rank, or your best scent can fall to the middle and be under-bought again.

One big order distorts a quarter. A 60-candle corporate order in one scent can lift a tail scent into the top ten for three months. Strip one-off bulk orders out of the ranking and buy for them separately. A Customer Wants 500 Custom Candles — How Much Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Should I Buy Before Starting Production? covers the order-specific purchase.

New launches have no history. A scent launched six weeks ago has half a data set. Give new scents their own provisional tier and buy them in 100 g until they have a full 90 days. I'm Launching New Fragrances Every Month — How Do I Prevent Fragrance Oil Inventory from Becoming Too Fragmented as the Catalogue Grows? sets out the launch discipline that stops this becoming 40 scents instead of 30.

Gift sets blur the signal. If most of a scent's sales come inside a mixed box, it may be riding on the set rather than pulling its own weight. Count it, but look at its single-candle sales before promoting it to the kilo.

Thirty scents is a catalogue. Ten scents is a business. Buy each group like what it is.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The convenient advice for a supplier would be to put every scent on the kilo. This page tells you to buy most of your range in smaller packs. It also shows that the 1 kg of several popular oils saves nothing, or even costs a rupee more, against two 500 g packs.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Medians for the 50 g, 100 g and 500 g packs are across all oils in stock at that size. Grams, months of cover and totals are arithmetic on those prices and are shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The sales split, the 4% wastage allowance, the 1.5-month order size and the tier boundaries are working assumptions for illustration. Frequently asked questions

how much fragrance oil to buy for each candle scent
Candles sold per month × oil per candle × about 1.04, multiplied by how many months one order should cover. A 200 g candle at 8% holds 16 g. At 30 candles a month that is 499.2 g a month, and about 750 g for six weeks. Round up to a listed pack.
should I buy all candle fragrances in the same quantity
No. Equal buying overstocks slow scents and starves bestsellers. In our example, 500 g of each of 30 scents tied up ₹78,600.40, left the top scent short after three weeks and gave slow scents 15 months of stock. Buying by demand tied up ₹49,296.40.
when to buy 1 kg fragrance oil instead of 100 g
When your own sales use about a kilo within two months, roughly 30 or more 200 g candles a month at 8%. For most CSI oils the kilo is within 1% of the 100 g per gram, so it buys cover, not a discount. The exceptions include British Rose, Jasmine and Mango Coconut.
how to identify best selling candle scents from sales data
Count finished candles per scent over 90 days, add all channels, adjust for days out of stock, and remove one-off bulk orders. Rank by oil used per month, not by revenue, because that is the number your purchasing needs.
what to do with slow selling candle fragrances
Move them to 50 g or 15 g, which costs about the same per gram as 100 g for most oils. If a scent stays in the bottom tier for two quarters, plan its exit. I Want to Discontinue a Slow-Selling Candle — How Do I Use the Remaining Fragrance Oil, Wax, Jars and Packaging Without Wasting Inventory? covers how to use up the oil, jars and packaging without waste.
how many candle scents should a small business stock
As many as your sales can keep moving. The tier method will show you. When the bottom ten scents together make about 5% of your candles, you have more scents than your demand needs, and cutting several will free cash and shelf space.

Non-price figures and assumptions: The 30-scent sales split is an illustrative example, not CSI sales data. Oil per candle assumes a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g). The 4% wastage allowance sits within the 3–5% working range, and the 1.5-month order size and the tier cut-offs are working assumptions. Price-break statistics: 15 g vs 100 g median premium 23.1% (55 oils); 50 g vs 100 g median 0.0%; 1 kg within ±1% of 100 g for 52 of 91 oils; 24 oils with a 1 kg saving of 5% or more. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
