Freeze the fragrance before the bulk oil and the bulk wicks, because both follow the formula. Standard wax does not, so it can come whenever your cash and shelf allow.

Quick answers — read this first
Must the custom fragrance be finalised before I buy bulk wax and wicks? The fragrance must be frozen before the bulk oil and the bulk wicks; the bulk wax can come earlier. The oil quantity follows the load and the split follows the ratio, so both must be final. The wick size depends on the final oil and load, so buy small test packs now and the 1,000s after. Standard CSI 464 is reusable and costs the same per kilo in any bag size, so buying it early is a cash decision, as long as the wax type is settled first.

What does “finalised” mean? Written and signed: blend ratio in grams, load %, wax, wick, jar and fill, with a version number. In the worked example that is day 27, about 3.9 weeks after the brief.

What is at risk if I buy too early? In the worked example (1,000 × 200 g, rose–jasmine–sandalwood), a load that moves from 8% to 6% leaves 4.242 kg of blend (₹15,764.37); a 1,000-pack of the wrong wick is ₹9,440.00; a pre-mixed blend is up to ₹61,257.40 of client-specific oil.

What do the tests cost? 28 candles and ₹7,635.80 of CSI materials, 4.5% of the ₹1,70,903.00 bulk that follows.
The short answer
Oil: frozen first. Buy component oils for the tests only; buy the bulk after the freeze, and mix the blend per melt, never as one pre-mixed batch before sign-off.
Wicks: test packs of every bracket rung now (C1 20, C2 20 + 10, Cotton Braided 10); the 1,000s for the winning wick after the freeze.
Wax: type fixed before testing (the blend is tested in it); quantity can be bought any time, because CSI 464 is standard and the same ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg.
The settling number: freeze on day 27; test kit ₹7,635.80; bulk ₹1,70,903.00 (₹170.90 per saleable candle before jars, labour and GST).
What can you buy before the formula is frozen? Worked example: 1,000 × 200 g wedding candles in a rose–jasmine–sandalwood blend. ₹ = what you would be holding if bought before the freeze (CSI live pricing). depends on the final formula: low → high reusable if the order changes: low → high BUY ANY TIME (CASH DECISION) TEST PACKS NOW, BULK AFTER BUY NOW: CHEAP TESTS AFTER THE FREEZE ONLY Bulk CSI 464, 196 kg ₹99,450.40 Test oils, wax, wicks ₹7,635.80 Component oils, bulk quantity follows load C2 1,000-pack ₹9,440.00 Pre-mixed blend ₹61,257.40 Freeze = blend ratio, load, wick and wax written down and signed (day 27 in the worked example). Load moved 8% → 6% after buying: 4.242 kg of blend surplus, ₹15,764.37 (worked example). Positions are judgement; ₹ figures are CSI catalogue arithmetic, excluding jars, labour and GST.
Each purchase placed by how much it depends on the final formula and how reusable it is if the order changes. Wax sits top left (buy any time), test packs bottom left (buy now), bulk oils and wick 1,000s top right (after the freeze), a pre-mixed blend bottom right (never before the freeze). Positions are judgement; rupee figures are CSI catalogue arithmetic.
Straight answer
I need 1,000 wedding candles in a custom fragrance — should the fragrance formula be completely finalised before I buy bulk wax and wicks?
Finalise the fragrance before the bulk oil and the bulk wicks; the bulk wax does not have to wait. The oil is the most formula-dependent purchase you will make: the frozen load sets how many kilograms (in the worked example 16.968 kg of blend at 8%, but 4.242 kg less at 6%) and the frozen ratio sets how they split between the components, and a blend mixed before sign-off belongs to one client. The wick is next: a custom blend with a woody base, at a load you have not settled, may need a different wick from the one your jar uses for other scents, so buy test packs of each rung (Eco C1, Eco C2, Cotton Braided) now and the 1,000s only for the winner. The wax is different: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is a standard, reusable material, the blend is being tested in it anyway, and CSI prices it at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, so buying it early costs nothing per kilo and is a cash and storage decision. In the worked example (1,000 × 200 g, a rose–jasmine–sandalwood blend), the tests are 28 candles and ₹7,635.80; the freeze lands on day 27; the bulk after it is ₹1,70,903.00.
One line: the oil and the wick follow the formula, so they wait for the freeze; the wax does not, so it can come whenever your cash and shelf allow.
The test stage, priced: British Rose 2 × 100 g + 50 g (₹896.80), Jasmine 100 g + 50 g (₹660.00), Sandalwood 500 g (₹2,513.40), six 1 kg bags of CSI 464 (₹3,044.40) and wick test packs (₹521.20): ₹7,635.80 for 28 test candles. In stock on 7 October 2026.

Your order as numbers

One thousand candles in a scent that does not exist yet. The quantity is fixed; the recipe is not.

The title gives the quantity and the fact that the fragrance is custom. It gives no fill or recipe, so the page uses the series default (200 g at 8% in your own jar) and a worked-example blend of three CSI oils, British Rose 50%, Jasmine 30% and Sandalwood 20%, all of whose pages state a candle maximum of 10% in soy, the same as CSI 464’s stated ceiling. For a blend, the load applies to the whole blend, and the lowest stated maximum among its components is the conservative limit (a judgement): here 10% either way, and the ladder stops there.

What “completely finalised” has to mean

A formula is final when someone else could make the candle from the paper.

“The client likes the blend” is not a final formula; it is a liked smell. A frozen formula has six lines, each written down: the blend ratio in grams per kilogram of blend, the load as % of total candle weight, the wax, the wick, the jar and fill, and the cure before judging or shipping. It has a version number (F-03, say), the date, the client’s signature on a physical sample made from exactly that version, and your own full burns of that version finished cleanly. Anything changed after that is a new version, tested as one; the 4801–4900 change-control posts exist because “only 10% of the blend” is still a change (the 10%-of-the-blend post).

Getting to the freeze · worked example · day 0 = the brief
Test bottles on the bench by day 3 (confirm dispatch on WhatsApp) · throw checked at day 3 and day 7 after each pour; durations are planning judgements
Stage Candles · blend What it fixes Day
Ratio screen: 3 ratios at 8% on C2 6 · 96 g The ratio (50/30/20 leads in this example) 3 → 10
Load ladder at the leading ratio: 6/8/10% 6 · 96 g The load 10 → 17
Wick bracket at that load: C1, C2, Cotton Braided × 3 9 · 144 g The wick (judged on first burns, confirmed by full burns) 17 → 20
Confirmation: 2 full burns, 3 client samples, 2 retains 7 · 112 g The client’s approval of version F-03 20 → 23
Freeze: signature + your full burns ended — Bulk oil and wicks may now be bought 27

That is 28 candles and 448 g of blend before any bulk oil. How much development time a new fragrance adds to a large order, and how to quote it, is the development-time post; how much oil to buy first for testing is the test-quantity post. This page is about what the result of that testing unlocks, purchase by purchase.

Why the oil is frozen before the bulk oil

The oil is the only line whose quantity, split and identity all come from the test.

The load sets the quantity. At 8% the order needs 16.968 kg of blend. If the ladder lands on 6%, 4.242 kg of that is surplus (₹15,764.37 at the blend’s average 3.72 a gram); if it lands on 10%, you are 4.242 kg short and buying again, possibly from new lots, mid-order. The ratio sets the split. A move from 50/30/20 to 40/40/20 leaves 1.6968 kg of rose surplus (₹5,205.78) and a jasmine shortfall of the same weight. The blend is client-specific. Rose, jasmine and sandalwood are common oils you could use in your range; a 17 kg tank of their mixture is one couple’s scent.

Argued against our own interest: we sell the kilograms, and the honest advice is still to buy ₹896.80 of rose, ₹660.00 of jasmine and one 500 g sandalwood now, and nothing more until the freeze. Even after the freeze, buy component oils and mix the blend per melt, weighed, rather than pre-mixing the whole 16.968 kg: a component left over goes back into your range, a mixed blend does not. Sandalwood’s small sizes being out of stock on 7 October 2026 is the one place the test costs more than it should (₹2,513.40 for 89.6 g of use); if the couple are undecided between woods, test that question first.

Blend maths after the freeze is simple and must be weighed, not poured: grams of each component per melt = melt kg × load × share. A 10 kg melt at 8% takes 400 g rose, 240 g jasmine and 160 g sandalwood. Changing one component later, even for a stock-out, is a retest: read the replaced-one-oil-in-a-blend post before you substitute.

Why the wick waits for the oil

A wick is proven for a jar, a wax, an oil and a load together. Change one and it is a guess.

Heavier, woody or resinous oils commonly change how a wick burns: more carbon on the wick, a smaller or sootier flame, sometimes a need to step up; higher loads can do the same. A blend is its own oil for the wick’s purposes, not the average of its components (the reasoning is in the blended-oil wick post). So the wick you use for rose alone in this jar is a starting rung, not an answer, and the load you have not frozen yet changes the answer again (the load-change wick post).

CSI’s tabbed range is short: Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided, with no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2, and the pages state no jar-diameter ranges for the Eco wicks. Cotton Braided’s page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". That makes the bracket easy to buy and honest to describe: three rungs, three candles each, at the frozen-candidate load, judged on melt pool, flame, soot and jar heat through to the end. If none of the three is right, ask on WhatsApp rather than pretend a finer step exists.

Wick purchase · before and after the freeze
Flat price per wick at every pack size (C1, C2, Cotton Braided) · 1,050 pours + 2% defects = 1,071 · C1 10-pack out of stock on 7 October 2026
Wick Test pack (now) Test ₹ Bulk if it wins Bulk ₹ Bought too early and wrong
Eco C1 20 (smallest in stock) ₹118.00 1,000 + 50 + 2 × 20 ₹6,431.00 a slow-moving 1,000-pack
Eco C2 20 + 10 ₹283.20 1,000 + 50 + 20 + 10 ₹10,195.20 ₹9,440.00 for 1,000
Cotton Braided 10 ₹120.00 1,000 + 50 + 3 × 10 ₹12,960.00 ₹12,000.00 for 1,000

Because all three are flat per wick, there is no saving to chase by buying the 1,000-pack early: the 20-pack costs exactly the same per wick. The only thing early bulk buying gives you is a box of wicks you may not use for this order.

Why the wax can come early

Wax is the one bulk line the formula does not move, once the wax type is settled.

The quantity barely depends on the formula: at 6% the order needs a little more wax than at 8%, at 10% a little less (4.24 kg either way in the worked example). The type does depend on it: the blend is tested in CSI 464 and must stay within its stated "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"; if the testing pushed you to another wax, every result so far would need repeating. So decide the wax before the ratio screen, test in it, and then the bulk purchase is free to happen whenever suits you.

There is no price reason to buy early, which is worth saying plainly: CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo in 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg bags, and CSI lists no larger wax pack for it. The reasons to buy early are stock certainty, a single lot for the whole order (ask; it is not promised), and one less delivery to wait for after the freeze. The reasons not to are cash tied up and shelf space for 195.13 kg. Splitting it into tranches costs nothing per kilo; the trade-offs are the buy-at-once-or-split post.

Use the early wax for the tests
If you buy the bulk wax early, take the six test kilograms from the same lot. The blend, load and wick are then proven in the exact wax the order will use, which removes one lot question from the freeze.

The decision rule and what protects you

Wax when you like. Oil and wicks after the signature. Never a pre-mixed blend before it.
1
Settle the wax type firstTest everything in the wax the order will use (CSI 464 here). Buy its bulk now if cash and space allow, ideally from one lot, and take the test kilograms from it.
2
Buy the test stage onlyComponent oils in test sizes, wick test packs of every rung, test jars: ₹7,635.80 in the worked example.
3
Fix ratio, then load, then wickIn that order: the load depends on the ratio and the wick on both. Write each decision down with the candle numbers that proved it.
4
Freeze and signVersion number, six lines, a physical sample signed by the client, your full burns ended: day 27 in the worked example.
5
Buy the bulk oil and wicks₹61,257.40 of component oils and ₹10,195.20 of C2 in the worked example; confirm stock, lots and dispatch on WhatsApp first.
6
Mix the blend per meltWeigh each component into each melt from the frozen card. Keep a sealed sample of each component lot with the retains.

The settling numbers are day 27 for the freeze, ₹7,635.80 before it and ₹1,70,903.00 after it. If the wedding date leaves less time than the freeze plus your production and cure days, the honest options are a proven scent, a smaller custom order (the head table, the favours) with the rest in a proven scent, or a later date; not a bulk purchase made in hope.

Commercial protection (practical judgement, not legal or financial advice): a custom fragrance is client-specific the moment it is mixed. Put the frozen version number on the written approval with the sample, quantity and date; ask for an advance that covers the bulk oils before you buy them (₹61,257.40 here); state how many blend revisions are included and what further rounds cost (when to stop buying without another payment); and agree that a change after the freeze is a change to the order, priced as one (the approved-then-switched post). The list of what the client must approve before bulk purchase is the approvals post.
This page is for you if the fragrance is a custom blend still being finalised and you are deciding what to buy now. Read elsewhere if the fragrance is a single oil you have never used (6341), or custom colour and packaging run alongside it (6358).

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The one bulk line you can buy before the freeze without risk, provided the wax type is settled: the blend must be tested in this wax and stay within its stated "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, so six 1 kg bags for the tests (₹3,044.40) and 196 kg for the order (₹99,450.40) cost the same per kilo. Buying early gives you stock certainty, not a discount: ask on WhatsApp about one lot and tranches.

Wedding season is commonly November to February; 30 November 2026 is 54 days from 7 October 2026. A custom fragrance on 1,000 candles needs about 3.9 weeks to the freeze in this example, before production and cure. Message us on WhatsApp for the test oils and wicks today and a bulk quote with GST invoice for after the freeze; we will confirm what we can supply, from which lots and when, and what we can’t promise.

The CSI principle
Buy each material when the formula stops changing it.
The wax stops changing when its type is chosen; the oil and the wick stop changing at the freeze. In the worked example: ₹7,635.80 before day 27, ₹1,70,903.00 after it.
"A custom scent is finished when it is a number on paper and a signature on a candle, not when it smells right on a strip."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wax and wicks named here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy our oils in bulk or our wicks by the thousand until the formula is frozen, that our wicks cost the same per wick in a 20-pack as in a 1,000-pack, that buying our wax early earns no discount, and that our Sandalwood’s small sizes are out of stock.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, size by size; every item offered here is in stock on that date, and the out-of-stock Sandalwood 15 g, 50 g and 100 g and Eco C1 10-pack are not offered. Stock depth, dispatch dates and lot continuity for bulk quantities are not shown on product pages and are confirmed on WhatsApp.

The blend, 200 g fill, 8% load, test-stage sizes, day counts, 10 planned extras, 4% loss, 1% heel and 2% wick buffers are labelled worked examples or planning judgements; the 1,000 candles and the custom fragrance are yours. This is practical judgement, not legal or financial advice. For bulk pricing, stock and lot confirmation, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should I finalise a custom candle fragrance before buying bulk materials?
Before the bulk oil and the bulk wicks, yes: the oil quantity and split come from the frozen load and ratio, and the wick size depends on both. Standard wax can be bought earlier, once the wax type is settled, because it is reusable.
Can I buy wax before the fragrance is finalised?
Yes, if it is the wax you are testing in and you would use it anyway. CSI 464 costs ₹507.40 a kilo in any bag size, so there is no discount for buying early; the benefits are stock certainty and one lot for the tests and the order.
Do I need a new wick test for a fragrance blend?
Yes. A blend behaves as its own oil for the wick, and its load changes the answer again. Buy small packs of each rung (here C1, C2 and Cotton Braided), bracket at the candidate load, and buy the 1,000s for the winner only.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 1,000 candles of 200 g?
At 8%, 16 kg of blend for 1,000 candles; with 10 extras, a 4% loss buffer and a 1% heel, about 16.968 kg. At 6% it would be 4.242 kg less, which is why the load is frozen before the oil is bought.
Should I pre-mix a custom fragrance blend in bulk?
Not before the formula is frozen and signed, and preferably not at all: weigh each component into each melt from the frozen card. Leftover components go back into your range; a leftover blend belongs to one client.
What does a frozen candle formula include?
The blend ratio in grams, the load as % of total weight, the wax, the wick, the jar and fill, and the cure, with a version number, a date, a signed physical sample of that version and your own full burns of it.

About this guide: part of CSI’s cluster "Wedding orders & customisation" (6341–6360) in the series on bulk corporate and wedding candle orders × raw materials. It covers whether a custom fragrance must be finalised before bulk wax and wicks are bought: what “finalised” means, why oil and wicks wait for the freeze, why standard wax can come earlier, a risk table in rupees and a two-stage purchase sheet.

Non-price figures: 1,000 candles and the custom fragrance are the reader’s figures (title). The 50/30/20 blend and the ratio variants, the 200 g fill and 8% load (total-weight basis: 16 g oil + 184 g wax), test-stage sizes, day counts, 10 planned extras, 4% loss, 1% heel and 2% wick buffers are labelled worked examples or planning judgements. The blend ceiling uses the lowest stated maximum among the components as a conservative judgement. Wax and oil ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%; each component up to 10% in soy): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. The wedding season is a commonly cited pattern, not data. Costs are CSI materials only and exclude your jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
