A 5 mm wider jar adds a thin ring at the wall and 13.8% more pool. That is a triage, not a re-bracket: retest one representative per group and every oil that only just reached the wall, screen the hot ones, carry the rest with a check.
+13.8%
pool area, 7.5 cm to 8 cm internal · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Is 5 mm enough to justify retesting? Yes, but not every fragrance. Going from 7.5 to 8 cm inside adds a 2.5 mm ring at the wall and 13.8% more pool area (44.18 → 50.27 cm²). That is too much to carry the old approvals over untested and, in our judgement, too little to re-bracket the whole list.

Which fragrances should I retest? One representative per behaviour group, plus every combination your 7.5 cm records marked borderline on the side the wider jar threatens: oils that only just reached the edge. Borderline-hot oils get a short screen. The rest carry over on their group's evidence, with one candle from the first production batch burned to full life.

How many candles? In our twelve-oil worked example: 14 test candles (6 oils × 2 to full life, 1 oil × 2 screened), against 24 to check every oil and 72 to re-bracket them all.

What does it cost? ₹2,988.49 of oil, wax and wicks for the triage (your jars excluded; CSI lists no 8 cm jar), against ₹4,796.33 to check every oil.
The short answer
The verdict: retest by group, not by list. A 13.8% pool-area change is moderate; it calls for triage, not a full re-bracket and not a free pass.
The triage (judgement): group representatives and borderline-under oils → full life on the current wick; borderline-over → a screen; comfortable non-representatives → carry over with a production check.
The direction: a wider pool asks more of the same wick. Oils that barely reached the wall at 7.5 cm are the ones at risk; oils that ran hot may simply calm down.
The honest limit: CSI lists no 7.5 cm or 8 cm jar in stock, and its next rung above C2 is Cotton Braided, described for candles "exceeding 8 cm". There is no sized wick in between.
5 mm wider: a thin ring, and 13.8% more pool Inside diameters, to scale (3.6 px per mm). Bands on the right are our judgement for setting retest scope, not an industry standard. Triage counts are for the twelve-oil worked example below. 7.5 cm inside 44.18 cm² wick to wall 3.75 cm 8 cm inside: 50.27 cm² +6.09 cm² (+13.8%) dark ring: 2.5 mm of extra wax at the wall Pool-area change sets the scope 0% 5% 10% 15% 20% reps triage by group new system 7.5 → 8 cm: 13.8% 8.0 → 8.1 cm lot drift: 2.5% · 7 → 8 cm: 30.6% Triage of 12 approved oils 6 retest to full life, 2 candles each 3 group reps + 3 borderline under 1 screen, burns 1–3, 2 candles borderline over (British Rose) 5 carry over first production batch: 1 candle to full life 14 test candles in all vs 24 checking every oil, 72 re-bracketing 1 cm at this scale
The 7.5 cm pool (dashed) inside the 8 cm pool at true scale: the change looks like a thin ring, yet it is 13.8% more surface for the same wick to melt. The band bar is our judgement for how far a retest should reach; the triage counts belong to the twelve-oil worked example below.
Straight answer
I want to change my jar from 7.5 cm to 8 cm internal diameter. Is a 5 mm difference enough to justify retesting every fragrance?
It is enough to justify retesting, not enough to justify retesting every fragrance from scratch. The extra 5 mm adds a 2.5 mm ring of wax at the wall and raises the pool area by 13.8%, from 44.18 to 50.27 cm². The same wick now has more wax to melt and a wall 6.7% further away, so combinations that only just reached the glass at 7.5 cm are the ones most likely to tunnel at 8 cm, while combinations that ran hot may simply calm down. So let the area change set the scope and your old records choose the candles. Retest through full life one representative per behaviour group and every combination your 7.5 cm notes marked borderline on the under side; screen the borderline-hot ones over three burns; carry over the comfortable rest on their group's evidence, confirmed by burning one candle from each first production batch to full life. In our twelve-oil worked example that is 14 test candles instead of 24 or 72. If a representative fails, its whole group is retested.
One line: 13.8% more pool is a triage, not a re-bracket: retest the group representatives and the borderline-under oils, screen the hot ones, carry the rest with a check.
For the triage in our worked example: one Eco C2 50-pack (₹472.00) covers the 14 retest candles; a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) covers the contingency arm only if a borderline-under oil fails. Oils and wax come from your production stock.
Eco C2 50 — ₹472.00

What 5 mm does to the pool

Half a centimetre across is a thin ring at the wall. Spread over the whole surface, it is about a seventh more wax.

Your title gives internal diameters, so we use them directly; if your figures came from a listing, measure the inside at the rim, the middle and about 1 cm above the base first. Pool area is π r² on the inside radius; the figures below are geometry, not burn predictions. The general maths of a 5 mm change, across diameters, is the 5 mm post; here we only need this one step.

7.5 cm vs 8 cm internal · geometry
π r² on the inside radius · single centred wick · all figures declared
Measure 7.5 cm inside 8 cm inside Change
Pool area to the glass 44.18 cm² 50.27 cm² +6.09 cm² (+13.8%)
Centre wick to wall 3.75 cm 4.00 cm +2.5 mm (+6.7%)
Rough first-burn time (about 1 h per 2.5 cm, rule of thumb) about 3.0 h about 3.2 h a fifth of an hour more
Fill to the same line 200 g (worked example) about 227.6 g our worked example pours 225 g
At 8% of total weight 16 g oil + 184 g wax 18 g oil + 207 g wax 2 g more oil per candle

For scale: a 1 mm difference between two lots of the same 8 cm jar changes the pool by about 2.5%; going from 7 cm to 8 cm, as in the 7 to 8 cm post, changes it by 30.6%. The 7.5 → 8 step sits between those, which is why it gets its own scope rather than either answer. Drift between lots of what is meant to be the same jar is the incoming-lot post.

CSI does not list either jar
No CSI listing in stock states 7.5 cm or 8 cm. Two bamboo-lid jars give a "width" of 7.5 cm and both are out of stock on 29 September 2026; a width is not an inside diameter anyway. Your 7.5 and 8 cm jars are your own supplier's. CSI's part in this retest is wicks, wax and oil.

The pool-area change sets the level of risk

Decide how far the retest reaches before you look at a single candle. Otherwise the result you hope for sets the scope.

Set your bands in advance and write them down. Ours, labelled as judgement for a soy container range on one wick system:

Retest scope by pool-area change · our judgement
Same wax, load, wick and fill height · inside diameters measured · not an industry standard
Pool-area change Typical cause Scope
Under about 5% Lot variation of a millimetre or two Screen the group representatives; carry the rest; log it
About 5–15% A deliberate small jar change, like 7.5 → 8 cm (13.8%) Triage by group: representatives and borderline-under oils to full life; borderline-over screened; comfortable oils carried with a production check
Over about 15% A different jar (7 → 8 cm is 30.6%) Treat as a new candle system: re-bracket per group, full life for every approved oil

At 13.8% you are near the top of the middle band. That is a reason to be strict inside the triage, for instance by counting "edge on burn 3" as borderline rather than comfortable, not a reason to jump bands. Anything else that changes with the jar moves you up a band whatever the area says: a thicker base, a strong taper, a different glass, a new fill height or a wick count change. If the new jar is also taller, the final third sits lower and burns longer; treat it as a new system.

Mistake: deciding scope from how similar the jars look. What happens: a 5 mm step reads as "the same jar" on the shelf, the old approvals are carried over, and the vanilla that only just reached the wall at 7.5 cm tunnels at 8 cm in customers' homes. Fix: compute the area change from measured inside diameters and let the pre-written band set the scope.

Sort the approved list by group and margin

Your 7.5 cm notes already know which oils are at risk. Read them before you pour.

For each approved oil you need two things from the old records: its behaviour group (oils that behaved alike on the house wick) and its margin, how far it was from failing and in which direction. A useful margin note is the burn on which the pool first reached the wall, plus the trimmed flame height. Our worked example is twelve oils, all approved at 7.5 cm on Eco C2 in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8% (CSI 464's page: "Fragrance Load Up to 10%").

How the representatives were picked: in each group, the non-borderline oil whose 7.5 cm pool was slowest, with ties broken by base-note weight (our reading of each page's stated notes). So Lavender ("soft musk base") speaks for the light group, Bergamot Amber for the fresh/fruity group and Woody Oud for the heavy group. Borderline oils are not representatives; they are retested in their own right. All loads sit inside both ceilings at 8%; Fresh Strawberries' page states "6-9%", the lowest maximum here, and 8% is inside it.

No margin notes? Then you have no triage
If your 7.5 cm approvals only say "pass", you cannot tell borderline from comfortable, and the honest scope is a full-life check of every oil on the current wick (24 candles here). Start logging edge-burn and flame height now; the next jar change will be cheaper. Grouping oils as a house standard is the behaviour-group post.

The triage table: retest, screen or carry

Spend the candles where the change can hurt. A wider jar hurts the oils that were already short of heat.
Triage rules for a 7.5 → 8 cm move · our judgement
Same wick, wax, load and fill line · 2 candles per test · full life = to about 1 cm left, glass watched, never touched
Category Who Test at 8 cm Pass means Worked example
Representative One per group: the slowest comfortable oil Current wick, 2 candles, full life Edge by burn 2–3, depth about 0.5–1 cm, flame in your range, no carbon growth, flame clear of the glass to the end Lavender, Bergamot Amber, Woody Oud
Borderline under Edge only on burn 3, a ring at burn 2, or carbon at 7.5 cm Current wick, 2 candles, full life As above; if not, run the contingency rung Apple Cinnamon, Dark Vanilla, Vanilla Bean
Borderline over Fast pool, flame near the top of your range at 7.5 cm Current wick, 2 candles, burns 1–3 Flame and depth inside your range; the wider pool usually eases it (tendency); full life only if not British Rose
Carry over Comfortable, not a representative No test candles; 1 candle from the first production batch burned to full life Matches its group representative's 8 cm result Citrus Lemon, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Blue Ocean, Fresh Strawberries, Roasted Coffee

Running the triage

1
Measure the new jar lot firstInside diameter at the rim, the middle and about 1 cm above the base on several jars. If it is not 8 cm where the pool will live, recompute the area change before anything else.
2
Pour all 14 test candles on one dayOne wax bag, the same load and the same fill line, each oil from the lot you will produce with. Label bases by oil and candle.
3
Cure them identicallyThe Apple Cinnamon and Bergamot Amber pages state "cure 48-72 hours" for soy; many makers wait about a week. One cure length for all 14.
4
Burn with the old log sheetStill air, within sight, trimmed to about 5–6 mm, sessions of 3–4 hours for an 8 cm jar (judgement). Log the same lines you logged at 7.5 cm, so the two records compare line for line.
5
Read the screen after burn 3British Rose either sits inside your flame and depth limits or moves to full life. Never judge the glass by touch; watch how close the flame runs to it.
6
Finish the full-life candles before carrying anythingThe five carried oils go into production only after their group representative has reached about 1 cm left and passed.

The carry-over check is not a formality. A carried oil goes into production on its group's evidence, and the first batch's full-life candle is the moment that evidence is confirmed for that oil. If it disagrees with its representative, stop pouring that oil and retest it as borderline. The scheduling of a retest like this across a whole range, with more oils than candles, is the same logic as the grouping post.

Three ways to retest, costed

Re-bracketing everything feels safe. It is mostly money spent where nothing changed.

All three plans use 225 g candles at 8% (18 g oil + 207 g wax), oils at their 500 g per-gram prices (the stock you already hold for production), CSI 464 at the 10 kg price and CSI's flat per-wick prices: C1 ₹5.90, C2 ₹9.44, Cotton Braided ₹12.00. Jars are excluded because they are yours; count them as one per candle.

Retest plans · twelve oils · worked example
Materials only · CSI live pricing, 29 September 2026 · excludes jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST
Plan Candles Oil Wax Wicks Cost
Re-bracket every oil (C1, C2, Cotton Braided × 2) 72 1,296 g (108 g each) · ₹6,147.01 14,904 g · ₹7,562.29 24 + 24 + 24 · ₹656.16 ₹14,365.46
Full-life check of every oil on C2 24 432 g · ₹2,049.00 4,968 g · ₹2,520.76 24 C2 ₹4,796.33
Triage by group (this page) 14 252 g · ₹1,385.88 2,898 g · ₹1,470.45 14 C2 · ₹132.16 ₹2,988.49
Contingency, only if needed: Cotton Braided arm for the three borderline-under oils up to 6 36 g each 1,242 g 6 Cotton Braided up to ₹1,425.92

The triage uses 42% fewer test candles than checking every oil and 81% fewer than re-bracketing, and saves ₹1,807.84 in materials against the full check. The bigger saving is burn time: every full-life candle in an 8 cm jar is many sessions of supervised burning, and the triage puts those hours on the six oils where a failure is plausible.

Argued against our own interest: the triage sells fewer wicks and less wax than either alternative, and we still recommend it. Equally, if your old records have no margin notes, buy for the full check instead: a triage built on guesses is cheaper only until the first tunnelling complaint.

Reading the retest: when a representative fails

One failure widens the retest to its group. It does not widen it to the whole list.
Outcomes and next steps · our judgement
CSI rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided · no sized, tabbed wick between C2 and Cotton Braided
Result Reading Next step
All representatives and borderline-under oils pass; British Rose screens clean The 5 mm step stays inside the current build's margin Approve the 8 cm builds; carry the rest with their production checks
A borderline-under oil fails under (ring persists, carbon) That oil was already short of heat at 7.5 cm Run the Cotton Braided arm for it (2 candles to full life); its page wording "exceeding 8 cm" puts 8 cm on the border, so test, don't assume
A representative fails under The group as a whole is short of heat at 8 cm Retest every oil in that group, current wick and Cotton Braided, 2 each; other groups unaffected
Cotton Braided passes the ring but runs hot late in the jar The answer sits between C2 and Cotton Braided, where CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick Check centring, fill height and load; ask us on WhatsApp; another supplier's in-between size may be the honest answer
British Rose still runs hot at 8 cm Over-wicked even with more pool Bracket one rung down (C1) in the 8 cm jar, 2 candles, full life

The vanilla case has its own deep-dive at 8 cm, a one-rung-up comparison judged in the lower third: the 8 cm vanilla post. The two-burn catch-up logic that makes "edge on burn 3" a borderline note rather than a fail is the 7.5–8 cm hub. If several groups fail together, the problem is the system, not the oils; the diagnostic for a lot that is only a few millimetres wider is the few-millimetres-wider diagnostic.

Mistake: fixing a failed representative with more oil. What happens: more load commonly makes a flame smaller or sootier, the opposite of what a wider pool needs, and at 10% you are at CSI 464's stated ceiling. Fix: keep the load fixed through the retest; change the wick rung, one step at a time.

Buying for the retest

Four items, chosen on page wording, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results; oil yields are counted at 18 g per 225 g candle.

1
wick · the house wick, retested in the new jar
Eco Candle Wicks — Thick (C2), 50-pack
In the worked example every oil was approved on C2 at 7.5 cm, so the retest runs C2 at 8 cm against the old records. The 50-pack covers the 14 triage candles with 36 left. The page states no size or jar range in the text we captured. Argued against our own interest: do not restock production C2 for the new jar until the representatives pass; the price per wick is ₹9.44 whenever you buy.

wick · the contingency rung for the heavy group
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The one rung up from C2 in CSI's range. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", so an 8 cm inside diameter is the border of its own wording: a reasonable arm to test if a borderline-under oil fails on C2, not a default for the new jar. Flat ₹12.00 a wick in every pack; a 10-pack covers the whole contingency arm.

Contingency arm: up to 6 wicks from a ₹120.00 10-pack. Buy 10 — ₹120.00
3
fragrance oil · gourmand · a borderline-under retest
Dark Vanilla Fragrance
The worked example's heaviest borderline oil: edge only on burn 3 at 7.5 cm, with light carbon. The page states "candles (6-10%)", "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax" and notes of "rich vanilla and spice opening into deep caramel and cream, settling into dark amber and warm musk". Vanillin-rich oils commonly need more wick (a tendency, not CSI data), which is why a wider pool threatens this oil first. Two 225 g retest candles use 36 g; a 100 g bottle leaves 64 g, or 28 g if the Cotton Braided arm runs too. All sizes in stock on 29 September 2026.

fragrance oil · herbal · the light group's representative
Lavender Fragrance Oil
Chosen as the light group's representative because its 7.5 cm record had the slowest pool in that group (edge on burn 2), tie broken by its "soft musk base". The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" and "fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base". If Lavender passes at 8 cm, Citrus Lemon and Eucalyptus Spearmint carry over on its evidence. The 50 g bottle covers the two retest candles with 14 g left; the 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram.
Size Price Per gram 225 g candles at 8%

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days from 29 September 2026. The CSI principle
Let the area change set the scope; let your records pick the candles.
A 5 mm wider jar is a triage: retest the group representatives and the oils that only just reached the wall, screen the hot ones, and carry the rest with a production check.
"The jar got wider for every oil. It only got harder for the ones that were already struggling."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax and oils named here and does not sell finished candles. This page recommends the retest that uses the fewest of our wicks, says plainly that we list neither a 7.5 cm nor an 8 cm jar, and that our range has no sized wick between C2 and Cotton Braided.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026, with stock checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack and the 7.5 cm-width bamboo-lid jars are out of stock on that date. Load, vanillin, notes and cure wording are quoted from the product pages.

The scope bands, triage rules, representatives, margins, the 225 g fill and the twelve-oil records are our judgement or worked examples; flame, depth and first-burn times are commonly cited rules of thumb, and CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Does a 5 mm wider candle jar need a different wick?
Sometimes. From 7.5 to 8 cm inside the pool area rises 13.8%, so combinations that only just reached the wall may tunnel. Retest those and one representative per fragrance group before deciding; comfortable combinations often carry over.
Do I have to retest every fragrance when I change jar size?
Not for a small change, if your records note margins. Retest group representatives and borderline oils through full life and carry the rest with a production check. Without margin notes, check every oil on the current wick.
How do I calculate the melt pool area of a candle jar?
π × r² using the inside radius: 7.5 cm inside gives 44.18 cm², 8 cm gives 50.27 cm². Measure the inside at the rim, middle and near the base, because many jars taper.
Which fragrances are most affected by a wider jar?
Usually the ones that were already short of heat: vanilla-rich, coffee, oud and other heavy oils that reached the wall late in your earlier tests (a common tendency, not a rule). Light florals that ran hot may calm down in a wider jar.
What wick should I try if my candle tunnels in the wider jar?
One rung up from your current wick, tested beside it through full life. With CSI wicks that means Eco C2 to Cotton Braided, whose page describes it for candles exceeding 8 cm, so at 8 cm it is a border case to test, not a sure answer.
Should I increase fragrance load in a bigger jar?
Not to fix a wick problem. Keep the load fixed while you retest; more oil commonly makes a flame smaller or sootier, and CSI 464's page states a 10% ceiling.

Compute the area change from measured inside diameters, sort your approved list by group and margin, and spend the candles on representatives and borderline-under oils. Send us your list on WhatsApp and we will help you triage it.

About this guide: part of CSI's commercial wick-matrix cluster (4281–4300): retest scope for a 7.5 → 8 cm internal jar change, set by the pool-area change (declared) and applied by group and margin, with a triage table, three costed retest plans and the follow-up when a representative fails.

Non-price figures: diameters are internal as the question states; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Load is a percentage of total candle weight (225 g at 8% = 18 g oil + 207 g wax; 200 g = 16 g + 184 g). The 200 g and 225 g fills, the twelve-oil records, groups, margins, representatives and scope bands are worked examples or judgement. CSI 464 up to 10%; oil-page loads as quoted. First-burn time (about one hour per 2.5 cm), depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and flame ranges are commonly cited rules of thumb. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
