Buyer question · testing 20 fragrances
CSI does not sell a fragrance sample pack or testing kit. You build your own from the smallest listed size of each oil. For most oils that is a 15 g tester; for six of the twenty on this page it is 50 g or 100 g, and those six cost more than the other fourteen together.
₹4,175.66
20 oils at their smallest in-stock size, 560 g in total · a full two-round burn test with wax, wicks and jars ₹11,181.66 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What sample size should I order to test a candle fragrance? 15 g wherever it is listed and in stock; 51 oils have one. 15 g scents three 50 g test pots at 8% with 3 g spare. Where an oil starts at 50 g or 100 g, that size is its tester.

Does CSI sell a sample pack or testing kit? No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack, testing kit or discovery set. You build one from the individual sizes. Send your list on WhatsApp and we will help you assemble it.

How much does it cost to test 20 fragrances? ₹4,175.66 for the twenty samples on this page. With wax, wicks, jars, top-ups for round two and two basic tools, the full protocol costs ₹11,181.66 (₹10,473.66 if you own a scale and thermometer).

Which oils do not come in 15 g? Of 86 oils with stock, 30 start at 50 g, four at 100 g and one at 500 g. Many are inspired-by or newer oils. In this list: Sage and Cedarwood, Love Spell, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, Royal Apricot, Vanilla Orange Blossom (50 g) and Midnight Bakhoor Royale (100 g).
The short answer
Sample sizes: 14 oils × 15 g = ₹1,726.66 · 5 oils × 50 g = ₹1,650.00 · 1 oil × 100 g = ₹799.00 · total ₹4,175.66 for 560 g.
All-15 g swap: Replace the six with 15 g oils of similar families and the 20 samples cost ₹2,310.76. Small fragrance samples for candle testing lists every 15 g.
Protocol: Round 1: 3 × 50 g pots per oil at 8% (12 g). Round 2: six finalists × 2 full 200 g candles (32 g). Full cost ₹11,181.66.

The five grey tiles start at 50 g and the black tile at 100 g. Those six are not optional extras: if they are on your list, they set the budget. Decide whether each is worth its entry price before you order.
Straight answer
I want to test 20 candle fragrances before launching my brand — what sample sizes should I order?
Order the smallest in-stock size of each oil: 15 g wherever it exists, otherwise 50 g or 100 g. CSI does not sell a sample pack or testing kit, so you build the set yourself. Fifty-one oils have an in-stock 15 g, and 15 g is exactly enough for three 50 g test pots at an 8% load (4 g each) with 3 g spare. For the twenty oils on this page, fourteen come in 15 g (₹1,726.66 together), five start at 50 g (₹1,650.00) and Midnight Bakhoor Royale starts at 100 g (₹799.00). Total ₹4,175.66. Those six larger samples cost more than the other fourteen combined, so check each is worth its entry price, or swap it for a 15 g oil of the same family (the all-15 g version costs ₹2,310.76). Before you order, also check each oil's next sizes: Chocolate Fudge's 100 g is out of stock, and Royal Apricot, Roasted Coconut and Vanilla Orange Blossom have no 500 g listed. Test in two rounds: three 50 g pots per oil to screen all twenty, then two full-size candles in your production jar for six finalists. With wax, wicks, jars and top-ups the full test costs ₹11,181.66.
One line: 15 g where it exists, the smallest listed size where it does not, and a check of the next size before you fall in love with a scent.
There is no pre-made sample set, so here is the build. The fourteen 15 g testers on this list cost ₹1,726.66, from Roasted Coconut at ₹93.00 to Tangerine at ₹199.00. Start with the Saffron Cedarwood 15 g at ₹103.84 — its ladder has an unusual quirk worth knowing, covered below.

The sample size for each of 20 oils

Twenty oils is a serious test. It is enough to find a range, and enough to waste real money if the samples are the wrong size.

The twenty oils below span woods, florals, gourmands, fruits, spice and resin, with a few inspired-by-style profiles. They are a working example: swap in your own candidates, but keep the method. For each oil, order the smallest size in stock. Then look along the row to the right, at the sizes you would buy if the scent wins. A test is only useful if the winner can be bought again in production quantities.

Total, 20 oils 560 g ₹4,175.66

The fourteen 15 g testers average ₹123.33 each. The five 50 g oils average ₹330.00, and the 100 g of Midnight Bakhoor Royale is ₹799.00 on its own. Across CSI's in-stock catalogue, 30 oils start at 50 g, four at 100 g (Smoked Rose Royale, Grapefruit Oleo, Midnight Bakhoor Royale and Sultan's Smoke) and one, Sacred Sandal Ember, has only its 500 g in stock. Most of the 50 g starters are inspired-by or newer oils, which is why a test list full of designer-style profiles costs far more than one built on classic scents.

Six oils ₹2,449.00 ₹584.10 ₹1,864.90

The swaps save ₹1,864.90, but they are not like-for-like scents. Woody Oud is not Sage and Cedarwood, and Mango Coconut is certainly not Midnight Bakhoor Royale. Swap only where the family matters more than the specific scent. If you are building a range around a smoky resin or a tobacco gourmand, pay the 50 g or 100 g entry price; the extra oil is not wasted, as round two shows.

The 50 g starters carry their own round two
A 50 g sample holds enough for round one (12 g) and a full round two (32 g for two 200 g candles), with 6 g spare. A 15 g tester does not: a 15 g finalist needs a 50 g top-up before round two. So the dearer entry size partly pays for itself if the oil makes the final.

Check the ladder before you test

Testing a scent you cannot reorder at production sizes is a wasted test. On the pull date, several oils in this list have gaps in their ladder that you should know about before you spend a week burning them.

Ladder gaps in the 20-oil list · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
What happens if one of these wins
Oil Gap What it means for production
Chocolate Fudge 100 g out of stock Produce from 50 g (₹3.96/g) or 500 g (₹1,982.40); ask on WhatsApp for a restock date
Roasted Coconut No 500 g listed Jump from 100 g (₹495.00) to 1 kg (₹3,999.00); the kilo is ₹4.00/g against ₹4.95
Royal Apricot No 15 g or 500 g listed Test at 50 g; produce at 100 g or 1 kg, flat at about ₹3.67/g
Vanilla Orange Blossom No 15 g or 500 g listed Test at 50 g; produce at 100 g or 1 kg (₹8,294.00)
Saffron Cedarwood 500 g cheaper per gram than 1 kg 500 g is ₹5.17/g, 1 kg ₹6.87/g: two 500 g cost ₹5,168.40 against ₹6,867.60
Tangerine Joint-dearest 15 g in the catalogue ₹12.00/g at 1 kg = ₹191.98 of oil per 200 g candle; cost it before you test it

The Saffron Cedarwood row is worth dwelling on. It is the kind of quirk that only shows up when you price every size, and it is good news for a winner: at 500 g it costs ₹5.17 a gram, among the lower rates for a woody spice. Sage and Cedarwood has the same ladder. The Tangerine row is the opposite warning. It may test beautifully, but at ₹191.98 of oil per candle it belongs only in a range priced for it. Choosing a supplier for 100 g tests and 1 kg reorders covers ladder continuity in more depth.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more if you tested all twenty and then ordered whatever you liked. But a scent that costs ₹191.98 per candle, or whose next size is out of stock, is not a launch scent for most brands. Cut those from the test list before you pay for them, unless you have a premium range in mind. A shorter list tested properly beats a long list tested quickly.

The two-round burn test

Round one tells you which scents are worth a second look. Round two tells you which ones are worth a launch.

Round one screens all twenty cheaply. Each oil gets three 50 g test pots at an 8% load: 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax per pot, 12 g of oil per scent. Three pots let you do a cold-throw check, a first burn and a second burn without reusing a candle. Round two takes the best six and pours two full-size 200 g candles each in the jar you will actually sell, at 8%, so you judge the scent as a customer will meet it.

1
Pour all twenty on the same day, in the same waxUse the wax you will produce with. Scent throw differs between waxes, so a test in a different wax tells you little. Record the oil, load, pour temperature and wick for every pot.
2
Label every pot with a code, not a nameNumber the pots and keep the key elsewhere. Blind testing removes the pull of a scent's name or price.
3
Cure before you judgeLeave the pots to cure for the same period — a week is a common working minimum for soy, longer is often better. Judge all twenty at the same age.
4
Score cold throw, then hot throwCold throw from the unlit pot. Hot throw after one hour and after two hours of burning, in the same room with the door closed. Use the scoring sheet below.
5
Cut to six on the scoresTake the top six by combined hot-throw score, then check each finalist's ladder and per-candle cost before confirming it.
6
Round two in your real jarTwo 200 g candles per finalist at 8%. Burn one for a full first burn to a full melt pool; hold the other back and retest after a longer cure. If a finalist is weak, test a pot at 10% (within CSI 464's 10% and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' 13% stated maximums) before dropping it.

Why 8% and not the maximum? Because 8% is the working load for costing throughout this series, and a scent that only performs at the ceiling is a scent that costs more per candle than you planned. Test at 8% first. If a scent you love is weak, a second pot at 10% tells you whether load is the fix, or whether the wick or the cure is. Never push load to rescue a wick that is too small. How to sample fragrance oils before a wholesale order goes further on the method.

The mistake that looks thorough. Pouring each 15 g tester into one full-size candle so the test "looks real". You get one candle per scent, no second burn, no retest at a different load, and nothing left to compare side by side after cure. Three small pots per scent give three observations for the same oil. Save the full-size candle for the six finalists, where it answers a different question: how the scent performs in the jar you will sell.
The CSI principle
Test in the wax, jar and load you will sell.
A scent judged in a different wax, a different container or at a load you will not use is a different candle. The cheapest test is the one whose result you can act on.

What the whole test costs

Samples are only part of the cost. Here is the full two-round protocol for the twenty oils, with the six finalists assumed to be Saffron Cedarwood, Spicy Raspberry, Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon, Love Spell, Sage and Cedarwood and Midnight Bakhoor Royale. Your finalists will differ; the method will not.

Wax is the second-largest line. Round one uses 2,760 g (20 oils × 3 pots × 46 g) and round two 2,208 g (6 finalists × 2 × 184 g), 4,968 g in all, so 5 kg alone leaves only 32 g for pour loss and a re-pour. Plan 3–5% extra as a working assumption; the extra 1 kg covers it. Of the three 15 g finalists, each has 3 g left after round one and needs a 50 g top-up. The three larger-sample finalists already hold enough: Love Spell and Sage and Cedarwood have 38 g left, Midnight Bakhoor Royale 88 g.

Spread across twenty oils, the full test costs ₹559.08 per scent tested (₹523.68 without tools). Set that against the cost of a wrong launch scent: a 500 g of Santal Noir that does not sell is ₹4,599.00 of stranded oil. Testing is cheap insurance, as long as the test is sound.

Testing now for Diwali on 8 November 2026? A two-round test with a one-week cure takes two to three weeks, which leaves little margin for festive production. If Diwali is the goal, test fewer scents, focus on festive profiles and order finalists' production sizes as soon as round one ends. We can help you shortlist on WhatsApp.

Scoring and deciding

A score sheet turns impressions into a decision you can defend. Use the same sheet for every pot and, if you can, ask two or three other people to score blind as well.

Scoring sheet · 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) · working method
What to score for each test pot
Criterion When How to judge Weight
Cold throw Before lighting Lid off, from 30 cm 1×
Hot throw, 1 hour Burning, door closed Walk in from outside the room 2×
Hot throw, 2 hours Burning, door closed Same room, same walk-in 2×
Scent true to name Throughout Does it smell like what the label says? 1×
Burn quality After first burn Full melt pool, no heavy soot, even surface Pass/fail
Cost per candle Before round two ₹/g at your production size × 16 g Check

Weighted hot throw decides round one. Burn quality is pass or fail: a scent that soots or tunnels in your wax at 8% needs a wick change, not a higher score. Cost per candle is a gate, not a score. A scent that wins on throw but costs twice what your range can carry goes into a premium line or off the list.

Wax for testing should be your production wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00 a kilo, ₹2,995.00 for 5 kg, rated up to 13% fragrance load), Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹507.40 a kilo, up to 10%) and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (₹650.00 a kilo) are all in the Candle Wax collection. Load maximums are the wax makers' stated formulation limits, not regulatory ones. For wicks, see Candle Wicks.

Once you have six finalists, the next decision is quantity. The 10-fragrance launch guide shows how to tier launch quantities and set reorder triggers, and the ₹5,000 first order shows a smaller launch built the same way. If you want to test more broadly first, the 20 fragrance oil combo and fragrance oil testing kits explain how to assemble a set from listed sizes.

Twenty samples cost less than one wrong kilo. Test in the wax you sell, at the load you cost, and check the next size before you fall for a scent.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. CSI does not sell a fragrance sample pack, testing kit or discovery set, and this page does not pretend otherwise. It shows how to build a test set from listed sizes, flags oils whose production sizes have gaps, and advises cutting scents that cost too much per candle before you pay to test them.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every sample size recommended was in stock on the pull date; out-of-stock sizes are labelled. Totals, per-gram figures and gram counts are arithmetic, shown so you can check them.

The 50 g test pot, 8% load, three pots per oil, the six finalists and the one-week cure are working assumptions for a sound test, not a guarantee of any oil's performance. For help assembling a test order, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What size fragrance oil sample is best for testing candles?
15 g where it is listed. It holds enough for three 50 g test pots at 8% (12 g) with 3 g spare, or one candle of about 187 g at 8%. Where an oil starts at 50 g, the 50 g is enough for both test rounds.
How much fragrance oil do I need to test a scent?
About 12 g for a first screen (three 50 g pots at 8%) and another 32 g for a full-size test (two 200 g candles at 8%). A 15 g tester covers round one; a 50 g covers both.
Does CSI have a fragrance sample kit?
No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack, trial pack, discovery set or testing kit. Build one from the 15 g and 50 g sizes; we can help on WhatsApp. Candle fragrance oil sample packs explains the build.
How long should I cure a test candle before judging the scent?
Cure every test pot for the same period before scoring; a week is a common working minimum for soy wax, and longer often improves throw. Judge all your tests at the same age.
Why do some fragrance oils not come in 15 g?
Many newer and inspired-by oils are listed from 50 g, and a few from 100 g. On the pull date, 30 in-stock oils start at 50 g, four at 100 g and one at 500 g. For those, the smallest listed size is the tester.
How many fragrances should I test before launching?
Twenty is thorough; ten to fifteen is enough for most small brands. Test roughly twice as many scents as you plan to launch, so the final range is chosen rather than accepted.
Build the test set yourself

Non-price figures and assumptions: Test pots are 50 g at an 8% load (4 g oil + 46 g wax); round two candles are 200 g at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax). Three pots per oil, six finalists, two round-two candles each and a one-week minimum cure are working assumptions. Test-pot containers are not costed. Wastage allowance of 3–5% is a working assumption. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.
