Fragrance Oil Testing Kit for Candle Makers

The tools, and what each one is for

The oils get the attention, but the tools decide whether your results mean anything. Two pots poured at different temperatures, or loaded by eye, are not a comparison between two oils. They are a comparison between two accidents. The table lists what a fragrance testing bench needs, what each item does in a test, and whether you can manage without it.

The first three rows are the ones people skip, and they are the ones that make testing worth doing. A scale matters most, because load is the single number you are trying to learn. At 8%, a 50 g pot takes 4 g of oil; an extra half gram makes it 9%, and suddenly one oil looks stronger than another for a reason that has nothing to do with the oil. A thermometer matters because oil added too hot can flash off part of the scent and oil added too cool may not bind well; follow the temperatures on your wax's product page. Centring devices matter because a pool that is lopsided releases less scent from one side.

Two benches, fully priced

Most makers need one of two benches. The Essentials bench tests scent and load in small pots and is enough to rank oils before you buy production stock. The Full bench adds production-size jars, two more wick types and a second wax, so you can run a proper trial batch on the oils that pass. Both assume you already have a heat source and a pot for melting.

The Essentials bench tests six oils in 18 pots of 50 g at 8% (three per oil), using 828 g of the kilo of wax, and 18 of the 20 wicks. Test pots themselves are not priced: use small heat-proof containers of one size, or pour the first round into the jars from the Full bench. The Full bench's ten jars let you run a three-candle trial on three oils with one jar spare. Both totals exclude freight and GST. Check that each wick suits your pot or jar diameter on the wick page before pouring.

Setting up the bench for the first round

The six oils to start with

A testing kit's oils should cover the families you are likely to sell, so the bench teaches you how different kinds of oil behave in your wax. The six below span floral, exotic floral, fresh citrus, fruity, gourmand and woody, all at 15 g and all with every larger size in stock on the pull date. If you already know your families, swap freely; the discovery set for businesses goes to 10–12 oils, and the tiered sample pack spreads five across price tiers.

Choosing the test wax

The Essentials bench uses Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, rated up to 13% fragrance load, which gives plenty of room above the 8% working default. The Full bench adds Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, rated up to 10%, as a comparison. Both ratings are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. If you have not chosen a production wax yet, pour the same oil at 8% in both and compare; if you have, test only in that wax.

What a round costs once the bench is built

After the first order, the tools are paid for, and every later round costs only consumables. For one oil tested in three 50 g pots at 8%, that is the 15 g bottle, 138 g of wax at ₹599.00 a kilo (₹82.66) and three Thin C1 wicks (₹17.70). The table shows the consumable cost per oil for the six oils in this kit, and how the one-off tools spread across rounds.

Spread over five rounds of six oils, the tools add ₹27.53 to each oil tested, which is why they are worth buying properly at the start. The consumable cost is dominated by the oil, so the fastest way to cut testing spend is to test fewer, better-chosen oils rather than cheaper tools.
