CSI Wick Diagnosis · Construction or Formula
One wick size is too large and the next too small. Before you rebuild the candle, try another wick construction: it changes one thing, costs less to test and finishes sooner. Here is what that honestly means at CSI, both paths priced, and the cost that follows you into production.
₹1,296.82
Performance Wooden Wicks 10 + Braided Wick Roll: the path A wicks · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
One wick size is too large and the next too small. Should I try another wick series before I change the formula? Usually yes. Testing a different wick construction changes one part of the candle and leaves the scent, colour, wax and cost sheet alone; rebuilding the formula changes all of them and takes longer. In our worked example the construction test costs ₹3,511.62 and about 11 days; the formula rebuild ₹4,763.00 and about 22 days.

What counts as "another series" at CSI? Honestly, not much: Eco C1 and C2, Cotton Braided, the Braided Wick Roll and Eco Braided cut to length, the loose 2-inch Eco wick, and one wooden wick with no widths. Between C1 and C2 the real candidates are the wooden wick and the braided roll. Cotton Braided is the rung above C2, not a sideways step.

What if no construction fits? Then change the formula in the smallest step first: dye, then load, then the oil, and the wax last. A one-point load drop is a formula change, but a small one; the hub ranks it first for that reason.

What do I buy? Performance Wooden Wicks 10 (₹590.00) and the Braided Wick Roll (₹706.82): ₹1,296.82, beside three candles of your current C2.
The short answer
The answer: try another construction first. It is one variable, it is cheaper to test, and it doesn't reopen scent, colour and cost.
The catch: CSI's range is short. Between C1 and C2 you have two sideways options (wood, the braided roll), and both are unknowns that need a full test of their own.
The money: path A (construction) ₹3,511.62 for 9 candles; path B (rebuild) ₹4,763.00 for 18. But a wooden pass costs ₹31.86 more per candle than C2 for as long as you make the candle.
If nothing fits: dye → load → oil → wax, one step at a time, with the C2 you already know.
Change the wick, or change the candle? Worked example, 200 g candles at 8%. CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026. C2 too large, C1 too small after trim, still air and full sessions Path A · another construction the formula stays as it is Candles 9 Arms C2 · wooden · roll New wicks ₹1,296.82 Wax (CSI 464) ₹1,014.80 Oil (Dark Vanilla) ₹1,200.00 Test total ₹3,511.62 Days, cure to verdict about 11 Re-opens scent, colour, cost? no Path B · rebuild the formula new wax + a 6/8/10% ladder Candles 18 Arms C1, C2 × 3 loads New wicks ₹118.00 Wax (CSI 468) ₹2,275.00 Oil (Dark Vanilla) ₹2,370.00 Test total ₹4,763.00 Days, cure to verdict about 22 Re-opens scent, colour, cost? yes Same gate for both: 3 candles per candidate, top, middle and bottom thirds all pass Path A finds nothing? Change the formula in the smallest step first: dye → load → oil → wax.
Two ways out of a gap between two wick sizes, priced for a worked example of 200 g candles at 8% with Dark Vanilla. Path A keeps the formula and tests two other wick constructions against your current C2. Path B rebuilds the formula (a new wax and a 6/8/10% ladder on C1 and C2), which doubles the candles and re-opens throw, colour and cost. Both end at the same approval gate. Prices are CSI live pricing on 7 October 2026; days are a labelled worked example.
Straight answer
If one wick size is too large and the next is too small, should I try another wick series rather than changing the whole candle formula?
In most cases, yes: test a different construction first. A wick change touches one part of the candle. A formula change (a new wax, a new oil, a big load change) touches the scent your customers know, the colour, the cure, the cost sheet and every wick result you already have, and it needs roughly twice the candles and twice the calendar. In our worked example the construction test is ₹3,511.62 and about 11 days against ₹4,763.00 and about 22 days. Be honest about the options, though. At CSI, "another series" between C1 and C2 means the one wooden wick or the Braided Wick Roll cut to length; Cotton Braided is the size above C2. Both sideways options are unknowns and need three candles each, to the end of the jar, beside your current wick. And count the cost that stays: a wooden wick that passes adds ₹31.86 a candle over C2 even in 100s. If neither construction passes, change the formula in the smallest step you can: dye first, then a point of load, then the oil, and the wax last. A tall, smoking flame during any of this means stop the burn.
One line: another construction first (wood, braided roll, ₹1,296.82 in wicks), three candles each beside your C2; only if both fail, the smallest formula step.
Path A, priced: Performance Wooden Wicks 10 (₹590.00) and the Braided Wick Roll (₹706.82), ₹1,296.82 together; your C2 is the control. Both in stock on 7 October 2026.

Your question, made precise

"Too large" and "too small" have to mean the same thing every time you say them.

Here is the situation in this page's terms. With the larger wick (we'll use C2, the common case at CSI) the candle shows the signs of too much wick: soot or a smoke trail during the burn, a flame that grows and flickers, a pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm by hour four (a rule of thumb), or glass that your own non-contact thermometer reads hotter than your written limit. With the next size down (C1) it shows too little: a pool that still hasn't reached the glass after the second full session, a collar of wax on the wall, a flame that shrinks or drowns. Both results come from candles trimmed to 5–6 mm and burned in still air, in 4-hour sessions. Unless your title gives one, the candle is the series default, labelled: 200 g at 8%, 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax, in your own jar.

The question is not "which of C1 or C2", because both have failed. It is which part of the candle to change next: the wick's construction, or the formula around it. This page owns that decision and its cost. The hub (6981) ranks all six ways across the gap and runs a 12-candle load-and-pair matrix; the sampling post (6984) buys every construction at once; 6983 covers a candle whose pool is perfect and only the soot is wrong.

Safety first, plainly: while you test, any candle with a tall smoking flame or a flame near the glass is stopped, set, trimmed and recorded as a fail; never "watched to see". Never judge glass heat by touch: use your own non-contact thermometer at fixed marked points (CSI lists none; our Pen Thermometer is for wax), and set your own limit rather than borrowing a number; the jar pages' "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" is a pour figure, not a burn rating. No construction makes a candle "safe" or "soot-free".

What "another series" honestly means at CSI

Our list is short. That makes this table quick to read and important to read carefully.

Wick makers elsewhere sell several numbered ranges in many sizes. CSI does not, and we won't pretend otherwise. Everything we sell is below, with what each page says in the text we captured and which gap it could honestly fill. "Unknown" means the page states no size you could place on the C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided ladder: you find out where it sits only by burning it.

CSI wick constructions · what the pages state · which gap each could fill
Page wording quoted · per-wick ₹ = pack price ÷ wicks (or tabs) · CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026 · "fills" is our judgement, not burn data
Construction Page states Per wick C1–C2 gap? C2–Cotton Braided gap?
Eco C1 / C2 (pre-tabbed) "minimal soot or smoke"; no length, width or jar range ₹5.90 / ₹9.44 These are the gap's edges C2 is the lower edge
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made (pre-tabbed) "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm" ₹12.00 No: it is above C2 The upper edge
Performance Wooden Wicks "less smoke and soot" (claim); one listing, no widths ₹59.00 (10s) to ₹41.30 (100s) Possible: unknown position Possible: unknown position
Braided Wick Roll (61 m, 100 tabs) "cut the wick to the desired length"; no braid size ₹7.07 a tab Possible: unknown braid Possible: unknown braid
Eco Braided Wicks (5 m / 10 m) "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars"; no size; tabs not mentioned by length Unlikely, on the page's own wording Possible: unknown position
Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch diameter) "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters"; untabbed by length Unlikely for most jars: about 5 cm No

So for the common gap (C2 too large, C1 too small) path A has two arms: wood and the braided roll. For the gap one rung up (C2 too small, Cotton Braided too large) it has three: wood, the braided roll and Eco Braided cut to length. Nothing on this list is a "C1½". If you need a sized step that we don't sell, we would rather tell you than sell you three packs that can't work: ask on WhatsApp.

One more honest point. Two wicks with similar names, lengths and thicknesses can burn differently (why a replacement that looks the same burns differently), so treat each construction as a new wick with no history, even though all of them are cotton or wood.

Before either path: causes, ranked

Both paths cost money. The first three rows cost nothing.

Before you change construction or formula, make sure both verdicts belong to the candle and not to how it was burned. The ranking is our judgement for "C2 too large, C1 too small"; signs are common observations, not CSI burn data.

Cause ranking · larger wick too strong, smaller too weak
User behaviour first (free to rule out), then formulation · ₹ from CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Long or capped wick on C2 (user) Big mushroom, flicker, soot that clears after a trim Trim to 5–6 mm, still air, 4 h Trim before every burn Nothing
2. Draught (user) One-sided soot and pool; worse with the fan on Repeat with fans and AC off Placement; care label Nothing
3. C1 judged on short burns (user) Collar after 1–2 h burns or a short first burn Fresh C1 candles, 4-hour sessions from burn one Re-judge C1 Nothing
4. Construction mismatch (formulation: wick) Both Eco sizes fail in clean conditions; pool and soot trade off with no middle Path A: wood and braided roll beside C2 Another construction ₹1,296.82
5. Dye load (formulation) Worse in the coloured version Undyed against dyed on C2, 3 each Less dye Nothing extra
6. Load or heavy oil (formulation) C2 fine in a light oil, sooty in vanilla, coffee or oud C2 at 8% against 7% (hub matrix) A point less load Less oil per candle
7. Wax or jar mismatch (formulation) Gap persists across oils, loads and constructions Path B, or a jar change Rebuild ₹4,763.00 in our example

Rows 5 and 6 sit below row 4 here for one reason: this page's question assumes you want to keep the formula. If you are happy to move one point of load, the hub's matrix tests that alongside a C1 pair and is cheaper still. Fragrance and dye effects are tendencies; no CSI oil or dye page gives soot or wick data in the text we captured.

Two paths, priced: test spend, days and the cost that stays

The cheaper test isn't always the cheaper candle. Price both, then decide.

The worked example: a 200 g candle in your jar, Dark Vanilla at 8%, C2 too large, C1 too small. Path A keeps the formula and burns three candles each of C2 (control), the wooden wick and the braided roll. Path B rebuilds the formula the way many makers do when a wick won't fit: it moves to a different wax (Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, whose page claims "low soot output" and states "Fragrance Load Up to 13%") and runs a 6/8/10% ladder on C1 and C2, because a new wax means new wick results. Oil grams follow the load: 12 g at 6%, 16 g at 8%, 20 g at 10%.

Path B costs ₹1,251.38 more in this example before you count its hidden work: a throw panel, a colour check on a new wax, a new pour temperature (CSI 468's page states "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C", against CSI 464's 80–90°C), and every label and cost line that names the old formula. That is why construction comes first.

The cost that follows you into production

Test spend is paid once. The per-candle difference is paid on every candle you make. Here the paths can swap places, and this is where we argue against our own interest.

Per-candle cost of each outcome, against your current C2
Declared calculations · wick prices at the pack named · wax at 10 kg prices for 184 g · labour not included
If this passes Per-candle change 250 candles a month Note
Wooden (100-pack) +₹31.86 +₹8,755.60 on 260 wicks bought as 2 × 100 + 50 + 10 The dearest outcome by far

Path B: CSI 468 instead of 464 +₹23.85 in wax +₹5,961.60 Before any load change

Argued against our own interest: the wooden wick is the dearest wick we sell, and if it passes it will cost you ₹8,755.60 more a month than C2 at 250 candles. If your customers don't want the look or the crackle, don't choose wood just to avoid a formula change; a one-point load step that passes is cheaper for ever. Equally, the braided roll's low per-tab price (₹7.07) is only cheap if your hands are cheap: cutting, tabbing and priming 250 wicks a month is labour that a pre-tabbed C2 doesn't need.

The construction test: arms, candles, approval

Three arms, nine candles, one variable: the wick.

Everything except the wick is identical: wax lot, oil lot, load, fill, pour temperature, cure and room. The control is your current C2, because a better arm only means something beside the arm it replaces. How many candidates to run side by side explains why three or four arms is usually the limit; here the CSI list sets it at three.

1
Prepare the roll wicks before pour dayCut nine lengths from the Braided Wick Roll a little longer than the jar is tall, crimp each into a tab, and prime them all the same way (many makers dip in melted wax and let them set straight; your method, written down). Measure and record the cut length: it becomes part of the specification if this arm wins.
2
Pour nine candles on one dayThree C2, three wooden, three roll. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C" and "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"; 8% Dark Vanilla is inside both its ceiling and the oil page's "candles (6-10%)". Centre every wick; seat the wooden wicks fully in their tabs.
3
Cure together, then burn in still airDark Vanilla's page asks for "at least 48-72 hours"; we use 3 days. Fans and AC off, candles well apart, room temperature written down.
4
Trim each construction its own way, the same way every timeCotton to 5–6 mm; wood to the length your own first session shows burns steadily. Write the trim on the sheet. A wick that only behaves at an unusual trim length is a wick your customers won't trim correctly.
5
Four-hour sessions to the end, thirds judged separatelyFlame height, white-card soot, pool width at 1, 2, 3 and 4 h; depth and weight loss each session. Worked example: at 7 g an hour a 200 g candle runs about 7 sessions to the 1 cm floor (a common rule of thumb).
6
Decide by the rule, then by the costOnly arms that pass the rule below go forward. If both wood and the roll pass, the per-candle table above decides, together with what your customers want to see.
The approval rule (ours, labelled)
A construction is approved for this jar, oil and load when all three candles meet your written limits in the top, middle and bottom thirds: no visible smoke trail and a soot card no worse than your reference; pool at the glass by the end of the second full session with no growing collar; a flame inside your band (about 2.5–5 cm is a common starting point) that grows no more than about 1 cm across a session; glass readings by your own non-contact thermometer inside your own written limit; wooden wicks that stay lit without relighting. One failed cell fails the construction. This is an in-house protocol, not an industry standard. Changing construction is a formula change for your records: what to revalidate when moving from cotton to wood.
Don't swap construction and formula in the same round. If you try the wooden wick in a new wax at a new load, a pass tells you nothing you can repeat, and a fail tells you nothing at all. Don't judge wood by its first evening: wooden wicks commonly need a session or two to show how they behave as the pool deepens (how to test wooden wicks properly). Don't let the braided roll become a mystery wick: if you can't write down the cut length, the priming and the tab, you can't reorder it. And don't buy a 100-pack of wood (₹4,130.00) before three candles pass.

If no construction fits: the smallest formula change first

A formula change isn't all or nothing. Take the smallest step that could work.

If wood and the braided roll both fail, the wick side of CSI's list is exhausted for that gap, and something in the formula has to move. Move it in this order, one step per round, with the C2 you already know as the wick:

Formula steps, smallest first
Each step is tested on C2 beside the unchanged control, 3 candles each, to the end · our judgement of order
Step Change What it re-opens Why this order
1 Less dye, or none Colour only Free, and heavy dye loading is a common soot contributor (tendency)
2 One point of load (8% → 7%: 16 g → 14 g) Hot throw, checked blind Inside the oil page's range; often enough when the wick is only slightly strong
3 Another oil in the same scent family Scent, throw, cost Some oils build more carbon than others (tendency); your customers may notice
4 Another wax Everything: wick results, pour, throw, colour, cost The biggest change; the whole of path B

Steps 1 and 2 are where the hub's matrix lives. If step 2 costs you some throw, the clean-burn, less-throw post explains how to judge whether that loss matters and how to win some back without a stronger wick. Step 4 is rarely the answer to a wick gap on its own; if you do change wax, every wick result you have is void and the test starts from the C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided ladder again.

The step to production quantity

Once one arm passes on three full-life candles, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 250 candles a month at 2% is 255 wicks. Wood: 2 × 100 + 50 + 10 = 260 for ₹11,210.00, slightly less than three 100-packs (₹12,390.00) and only wooden wicks get cheaper per wick in bigger packs (the 50-pack's "Save 25%" label works out at 20%, the 100-pack's at 30%). Braided roll: three rolls give 300 tabs for ₹2,120.46. The same 260 in C2 would be ₹2,454.40. Safety stock and lead time belong to the purchase-quantity formula; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. Before you order more than a month, see how many repeats to run.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. Path A (about 11 days) fits before it; path B (about 22 days) is tight. If a festive batch depends on closing the gap, start path A this week and message us the passing wick and count on WhatsApp so we can confirm stock and dispatch, with a GST invoice.

The construction most unlike the Eco wicks, so the most informative arm when two Eco sizes bracket your jar. The page says wooden wicks "tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks, with less smoke and soot" and mentions a "gentle crackling sound"; those are the page's claims, and your three candles decide them. One listing, no width options: if it is too strong or too weak there is no wooden size to move to. Dark Vanilla Fragrance
The kind of oil that commonly pushes a candle into a gap (a tendency): the page describes "rich vanilla and spice opening into deep caramel and cream, settling into dark amber and warm musk", states "candles (6-10%)" and "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax", and asks for a soy cure of "at least 48-72 hours". Heavy, vanilla-rich oils commonly build more carbon on a wick (a tendency, not CSI data). Argued against our own interest: test in the oil you sell. If yours is a light citrus that sits between C1 and C2, a dark vanilla tells you nothing about it.
Size Price Per gram 200 g candles at 8% (16 g) Oil per candle

Skip for now: Cotton Braided if C2 is already too large (it is bigger, not different); the Eco Candle Wicks Loose unless your jar is near 2 inches (about 5 cm); a new wax "while you're at it"; and any 100-pack of wood before approval.

Elsewhere: when one size seems slightly small and the next clearly large in a wide jar, the wide-jar between-sizes post; moving a working two-cotton-wick jar to wood, whether the whole burn test restarts; and a tall flame over a short pool that might be the wrong wick type rather than size, the wick-type question.

The CSI principle
Change the smallest thing that could close the gap, one thing at a time, and price what stays with you after the test.
Between C1 and C2: wood and the braided roll beside your C2 (₹1,296.82 in wicks), then dye, load, oil and wax, in that order.
"A new wick is one variable. A new formula is all of them."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every wick, wax and oil named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that our range has no half-sizes, that Cotton Braided is not a sideways step from C2, that our wooden wick is the dearest outcome, and that if path A fails your next test needs nothing new from us.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not offered; every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the wooden wick's "less smoke and soot", CSI 468's "low soot output" and the braided roll's "cut the wick to the desired length".

Path B's wax and ladder, the day counts, 250 candles a month, the 2% allowance and the approval limits are labelled worked examples or our judgement. Fragrance and dye effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change wick type or fragrance load if one wick is too big and the next too small?
Try another wick construction first if you want to keep the formula: it changes one thing. If none fits, drop the load by one point inside the oil page's range and test that on your current wick.
Are wooden wicks a good alternative when cotton wick sizes don't fit?
They can be, because they burn differently, but CSI sells one width only, so it either fits your jar or it doesn't. Test three candles to the end beside your cotton wick, and remember wood costs more per candle.
Is Cotton Braided bigger than C2?
On CSI's ladder, yes. Its page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", so it is the rung above C2, not a different series to try when C2 is already too strong.
Can I cut my own wicks from a braided roll to get an in-between size?
You can cut a length, not a thickness. The Braided Wick Roll's page states no braid size, so it is an unknown wick to test from scratch, not a half-size between C1 and C2.
Is it cheaper to change the wick or the candle formula?
To test, usually the wick: ₹3,511.62 against ₹4,763.00 in our worked example. In production it depends on what passes; a wooden wick adds ₹31.86 a candle over C2 even in 100s.
Do I need to redo all my wick tests if I change wax?
Yes. A new wax changes how every wick burns in it, so earlier wick results no longer apply. That is the main reason a wax change comes last.
One size too large, the next too small
Test another construction before you rebuild the formula, and price what stays with you after the test.
Wooden Wicks 10 and the Braided Wick Roll, ₹1,296.82, beside three candles of your current C2. If neither passes, your next step is a smaller formula change that needs nothing new from us.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster 6981–7000 on choosing, approving and buying wicks, in the series on large flames, soot, smoke, mushrooming and wick purchase. It covers what "another wick series" means at CSI, a cause-ranking table, a priced comparison of a construction test and a formula rebuild, a 9-candle construction test with an in-house approval rule, the order of formula steps if no construction fits, and the buy list and production step.

Non-price figures: "too large" and "too small" are the reader's results (title). The 200 g test candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax; 6% = 12 + 188 g; 10% = 20 + 180 g), load as a percentage of total weight, is the series default, labelled. Wax ceilings as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%; CSI 468 up to 13%), formulation limits, not regulatory ones; Dark Vanilla's page states "candles (6-10%)". Trim 5–6 mm, flame band about 2.5–5 cm, pool depth about 1–1.5 cm and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. Path B, the day counts, 7 g/h, 250 candles a month, the 2% allowance and the approval limits are labelled worked examples or judgement. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
