Quick answers — read this first
What is the difference between a maximum load and a best-performing load? A maximum is how much oil the wax can hold in solution — a formulation limit, stated by the wax maker. A best-performing load is how much oil your candle performs best with, which is almost always lower, and which only a cured, scored burn test can find. One is a boundary you must not cross. The other is a result you have to produce.

Where do I find each number? The maximum is on the product page: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks "up to 13%", CSI 468 "Up to 13%", CSI 464 "Up to 10%". The best-performing load is on your own score sheet, and it is different for each wax-and-oil pair you sell.

Is the maximum ever the best-performing load? Sometimes, and it is a legitimate answer — but it is the least likely single value in the range, because it is the most expensive one and the one closest to sweating. Treat "the ceiling won" as a conclusion that needs the same evidence as any other.

What is the difference worth in money? Two percentage points across a year of 6,000 × 200 g candles is 24 kg of extra oil. On Lavender at 1 kg pricing that is ₹1,25,304, less ₹12,177.60 of wax you no longer buy — a net ₹1,13,126.40 riding on one number you can settle with twelve votive jars.
The short answer
The maximum belongs to the materials; the optimum belongs to the candle: a ceiling describes a wax's capacity. A best-performing load describes an outcome produced by a wax, an oil, a wick, a vessel, a cure and a room acting together.
Your working ceiling is the lower of two published figures: the wax's and the oil's. Your search space is everything underneath it, down to a floor you choose — and the best-performing load is somewhere in that band.
Find it with three loads, two burn days and a score sheet: twelve 70 g votives, ₹1,643.30 of materials, one variable, gates before scores, and the lowest load that nobody can separate from the best one wins.
The ceiling is published. The best-performing load is somewhere in the solid band. Chunks + Cinnamon Vanilla ? ceiling 11.5% CSI 464 + Lavender ? ceiling 9.09% CSI 468 + Sandalwood ? ceiling 10% 0% 2% 4% 6% 8% 10% 12% 14% Outlined bar: everything the pair's lower published figure permits. All three ceilings are the lower of the two figures published for that pair, converted to a share of the finished candle where a page phrases its figure as a share of total wax weight. Floors are the lower end of the oil page's own stated band where it gives one (Lavender 6–10% of total wax weight) and 8% where the page says "Start at 8-10%" (Cinnamon Vanilla). Nothing here is a test result.
Straight answer
What is the difference between the maximum fragrance load and the best-performing fragrance load?
The maximum is a statement about the wax. It describes how much fragrance oil that specific formulation will hold in solution, and it is published by whoever made it: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state "up to 13% fragrance load capacity", Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 "Fragrance Load Up to 13%", Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". Cross it and the surplus stops dissolving. The best-performing load is a statement about your candle — this oil, in that wax, on that wick, in that vessel, after that many days of cure, judged in a room of that size. It cannot be published, because four of its six inputs are yours. So the two numbers do different jobs: the maximum tells you where the search stops, and the search tells you where to stand inside it. In practice your working ceiling is the lower of two published figures — the wax's and the oil's, which is why Sandalwood's "Up to 10% for soy wax" caps a 13% wax at 10% — and your search space is the band from a floor you can defend up to that ceiling: 16 g to 23 g of oil in a 200 g candle on Chunks with Cinnamon Vanilla, 11.32 g to 18.18 g on CSI 464 with Lavender. Three loads inside that band, four jars each, two burn days, gates before scores, and a rule written down before you smell anything: the lowest load nobody can separate from the best one wins. One line: the maximum is published and describes the wax; the best-performing load is unpublished and describes your candle — so obey the first and go and measure the second.

Two numbers, two authorities

One of these numbers is handed to you. The other one you have to earn, and nobody can earn it on your behalf.

Most load arguments in maker groups are really this confusion in disguise. Somebody says "soy takes 10%", somebody else says "I run 6% and mine are stronger", and both are talking about different things: the first about a capacity, the second about an outcome. Set them side by side and the argument dissolves.

The last row is the one to internalise. A ceiling is not a target and it is not a quality grade. A wax stated to 13% is not "better" than one stated to 10% — it has more capacity, which is useful if your oil and your candle want it, and irrelevant if they do not. 10% is a ceiling on one CSI wax and a recommendation on another, which is exactly why the number on its own settles nothing.

The mistake: reading "up to 13%" as "use 13%". Capacity language is descriptive. The Chunks page says "up to 13% fragrance load capacity", gives a recommended band of "8% to 13% of total wax weight", and then — in the same description — states "10% Recommended". A maker who reads only the first phrase pours 13%, pays for it forever, and never discovers that their own candle could not be told apart from the same recipe at 9%. Read the whole page, then run the test. And if a page states nothing at all — eleven of CSI's fifteen wax pages do not state a load — you have no ceiling to work under, so hold a conservative figure and establish behaviour before you climb.

What an IFRA line is, and what it is not
IFRA — the International Fragrance Association — publishes usage standards for fragrance materials by product category, and an IFRA document for a blend states the maximum concentration for those categories. That is a safety-and-compliance framework for the material, not a performance rating and not a candle recipe. CSI pages use many different phrasings: 32 say "IFRA compliance Yes - skin-safe within category limits", 13 carry a bare IFRA specification row whose value is simply "Yes", 26 add "IFRA compliant within these limits" under their own usage table — and 36 of the 107 pages never mention IFRA at all. No page publishes a certificate number, an amendment number, a category number or a date, so this guide does not either, and you should not infer a document exists for a given oil. If documentation matters to your buyer, ask: CSI supplies MSDS and IFRA documentation on request on WhatsApp. None of it will tell you your best-performing load.

Your search space, in grams

Before you test, define the band. The top is the lower of your two published figures — that half of the arithmetic is worked through in does adding more fragrance oil improve hot throw. The bottom is a floor you can defend: the low end of the oil page's own band if it gives one, or a figure you are willing to sell at if it does not. Everything between them is where the answer lives, and expressing it in grams rather than percentages is what makes it testable.

Worked out above: oil in a 200 g candle = 200 × the load read as a share of the finished candle. Where a page phrases its figure as a share of total wax weight, it is converted the conservative way: 13% of wax weight = 13 ÷ 113 = 11.504% of the candle = 23.0088 g; 10% of wax weight = 10 ÷ 110 = 9.0909% = 18.1818 g; 6% of wax weight = 6 ÷ 106 = 5.6604% = 11.3208 g. Rounding down is always the safe direction near a ceiling. Prices used in the test below: CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 (₹0.5074/g) and Lavender 1 kg ₹5,221 (₹5.221/g). The two conventions themselves are unpicked in how to calculate fragrance load for candles.

Notice the fourth row. When the wax page is silent, your only published figure comes from the oil, and a single-sided ceiling deserves more caution: run the low and middle arms first, and only pour the top arm once you have seen how the wax behaves with oil in it at all. A blank on a page is not permission.

The three-load test, designed to be scored

A test that produces an opinion is a waste of wax. A test that produces a row of numbers with a decision rule attached is an asset you keep.

The design below is deliberately small — twelve 70 g votives — because the expensive part of establishing a house load is not the materials, it is the four weeks. Keep it small, keep it honest, and write the decision rule down before you pour, so that your conclusion cannot drift towards whichever jar you enjoyed most.

Fix the five things you are not testingOne wax, one oil, one wick, one vessel, one cure length. For this worked example: CSI 464, Lavender, Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1), Clear Glass Votive Jars at a stated 70 g fill, and day 14. Write the five on the sheet. If any of them changes later, the house load you establish today expires with it.

Choose three loads spaced by at least a point and a halfYour pair's band is 5.66% to 9.09% of the finished candle, so run 6%, 8% and 9%. Per 70 g votive that is 4.2 g oil + 65.8 g wax, 5.6 g + 64.4 g and 6.3 g + 63.7 g. Do not space them closer: two loads a single point apart are hard to separate and you will spend four weeks producing a shrug. The top arm sits just inside the ceiling, never on it.

Pour four jars per arm, in one session, with the same melt disciplineTwelve jars: two per arm for day 7 and two per arm for day 14, so a disappointing day-7 result never tempts you to abandon the test. Weigh everything on a Candle Making Weighing Scale — load is a weight percentage and oils differ in density, so millilitres will not do. Follow the wax page: CSI 464 states a melting point and a pour temperature of 80–90°C, so record the readings you actually take with a Pen Thermometer.

Cure all twelve identically, and label on the baseLids on, one closed carton, room temperature, out of sunlight. Identical treatment is what makes the three arms comparable; a jar left on a sunny windowsill is not in the experiment any more. Labels go underneath so that somebody else can present the jars to you without giving the game away.

Run the gates before you run the scoresAt day 7 and again at day 14, before anything is lit: look for beading or a wet film on the surface, check the top for frosting or pits, and weigh one jar to confirm it holds what you intended. Any arm that fails a gate is out, whatever it smells like — a candle that sweats is not a candidate however good the throw. This is the step that keeps a load test from quietly becoming an argument for the highest arm.

Score one candle per session, blind, and apply the rule you wrote downOne jar lit at a time in the same closed room; a helper lights it and hides the label. Record pool width at 60 and 120 minutes with a steel rule, and intensity 1–5 at 30, 60 and 120 minutes from about 2.5 m. Air the room twelve hours between sessions. Then the rule: among arms that passed every gate and burned cleanly, choose the lowest load whose scores nobody can reliably separate from the best arm's. That is your best-performing load, and it is now a line on a recipe card rather than a feeling.

Write the decision rule before the first jar is lit
"Choose the lowest load whose 120-minute intensity score is within one point of the best arm's, provided it passed every gate." Sign it and date it. A rule written afterwards is not a rule, it is a justification — and it will always, quietly, favour the arm you already liked. Four shapes your result can take

A three-load ladder can only come out four ways. Deciding in advance what you will do in each case is what turns a pile of jars into a decision — and it stops you re-running the test because you did not like the answer.

The failure that wastes the whole four weeks: two variables. If the 9% arm also got a thicker wick "because it needed one", the test is void — you no longer know whether the winner won on load or on pool area. The same goes for pouring one arm a week later, curing one arm in a different room, or scoring one arm at night and the others in the morning. If you realise mid-test that a second variable crept in, stop and re-pour. The CSI principle
A ceiling is given to you. An optimum is earned, and it is earned once per recipe — not once per workshop.
Change the oil and you owe yourself a new test. Change the jar diameter, the wick or the wax and you owe yourself a new test. That sounds expensive until you price it: twelve votives against a load decision that rides on every candle you will sell this year.

What the answer is worth

The gap between a ceiling and an optimum is not a philosophical distinction. It is a line in your accounts, repeated every batch.

Put a number on it. A small brand pouring 500 × 200 g candles a month makes 6,000 candles a year, which is 1,200 kg of finished candle. At an 8% load that consumes 96 kg of fragrance oil; at 10% it consumes 120 kg. The difference is 24 kg of oil a year. On Lavender at its listed 1 kg price of ₹5,221 that is ₹1,25,304, against which you save the 24 kg of wax you no longer buy — ₹12,177.60 at CSI 464's listed ₹507.40 per kg. Net, the two percentage points cost ₹1,13,126.40 a year.

That is the sum the test is up against, and the comparison is not close: ₹1,643.30 of votives and four weeks of calendar, against ₹1,13,126.40 a year of oil that may or may not be doing anything. Run it the other way round and the logic is even plainer — if the ladder shows that 8% is indistinguishable from 9%, the test has paid for itself sixty-eight times over in its first year. And if it shows the opposite, you now hold something better than a saving: a load you can defend to a wholesale buyer who asks why your candle costs what it costs.

Two honest caveats. First, listed per-kilogram prices are the ceiling of what you pay, not a quote: for recurring volumes at this scale, pricing, GST invoicing and documentation are handled directly on WhatsApp, and this page will not pretend to know what a quote would be. Second, a load decision interacts with pack sizes. At 96 kg a year you are buying oil in 1 kg bottles regularly, so a change of 24 kg is a change in how many bottles arrive — worth planning against your festive calendar, with Diwali on 8 November 2026 the fixed point most Indian brands work back from.

Three oils to establish a house load on

If you are going to spend four weeks establishing a number, spend it on an oil you intend to keep selling, and preferably one whose page publishes a band so your search space has a defensible top and bottom. These three each publish a candle figure, and they are deliberately different in what else they publish — which is itself worth noticing.

Up to 6% for paraffin wax". That gives you a clean search space of 12 g to 20 g in a 200 g candle and an add temperature you can reason about rather than guess at. Its profile is stated as a single note — "Sweet, floral, and exotic jasmine" with a "Subtle musk" undertone — rather than a three-tier pyramid. Ignore the page's own line calling it one of the most technically reliable oils in the range; that is copy, not evidence. The flash point and the vanillin figure are the evidence.

Worth establishing a load on because it is a repeat-order scent for Diwali, Christmas and winter gifting, so the number you settle will be used thousands of times. Its page states "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48 to 72 hours" and "6-8% for paraffin wax", with a pyramid of "Juicy apple, spicy cinnamon" on top, "Baked goods, nutmeg" in the middle and "Vanilla, warm amber" at the base. It also states "Vanillin content Present - test in white wax", which means it can yellow pale wax over time — a gate for your score sheet, not a surprise for your customer. No flash point is published. One CSI customer, PREETHI PRASATH, writes that a customer's visitors noticed the scent on entering the home.

The convenient version of this page would say "pour at the ceiling" — we sell the oil, and two extra percentage points on 6,000 candles is 24 kg of it. Instead the page tells you to run a test whose most likely outcome is that you buy less oil than the ceiling permits, because a maker with a load they can defend keeps making candles, and a maker quietly over-buying fragrance eventually decides candles do not pay.

Every price, pack size and stated specification comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing and specification always take precedence. Maximum loads are quoted only where a page states them — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468, up to 10% for CSI 464 — and they are wax formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Where a page states nothing, this guide says so: eleven of the fifteen wax pages state no load, 56 of the 107 oil pages state no flash point, and no page anywhere publishes a best-performing load. Nothing here is a burn-test result. Frequently asked questions

Is the maximum fragrance load the same as the recommended one?
No. A maximum is a capacity; a recommendation is somebody's suggested starting point. CSI's Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page publishes both — "up to 13% fragrance load capacity" alongside "10% Recommended" — and it is the only one of the fifteen wax pages that gives a recommendation at all. Neither figure is a best-performing load, because neither can know your wick, your vessel diameter, your cure length or the room the candle ends up in. Read the maximum as a boundary and the recommendation as a sensible first arm in your test.
How do I find the best fragrance load for my candle?
Fix the wax, oil, wick, vessel and cure length; choose three loads at least a point and a half apart inside the band your two product pages permit; pour four jars per arm and cure them identically; apply pass-or-fail gates for sweating, surface finish and clean burning before you score anything; then score cold impression, time to a full pool and hot intensity at 30, 60 and 120 minutes, blind. Adopt the lowest arm nobody can separate from the best arm. Twelve 70 g votives cost ₹1,643.30 of materials.
Can the best-performing load be the maximum?
Yes, and if your test says so then adopt it — but treat it as the least likely single answer in the band rather than the default. It is the most expensive point, it is the closest to the wax's capacity, and it is the point at which a wick that was correct at a lower load may stop coping. If the top arm wins, re-verify the wick at that load and re-run your gates on the next production batch: separation and sweating usually appear during cure rather than on day one.
Do I need a separate test for every fragrance oil?
Strictly, yes — a best-performing load belongs to a recipe, not to a workshop, and oils differ in what they are built from. Practically, most brands run the full three-load ladder on their two or three highest-volume scents, adopt a house default for the rest, and re-test whenever a scent graduates into volume. A default is a decision to stop varying one thing, which is defensible as long as you know it is a default: 8% is the one figure almost every published band contains, which is why it is the usual choice.
What if my wax page states no fragrance load at all?
That is the position with eleven of CSI's fifteen wax pages, including Natural Soy Pearl Wax, Soy Pillar Wax and the paraffins. You then have only one published figure — the oil's — and a single-sided ceiling deserves extra caution. Run your low and middle arms first, keep the top arm modest, watch the gates closely during cure, and never borrow a ceiling from a different wax because it sounds similar. If you need a wax with a published figure to work under, CSI 464 states up to 10% and Chunks state up to 13%.
How much money is riding on getting this number right?
Two percentage points across 6,000 × 200 g candles a year is 24 kg of fragrance oil. At Lavender's listed 1 kg price that is ₹1,25,304, less ₹12,177.60 of wax you stop buying — a net ₹1,13,126.40. The test that settles it costs ₹1,643.30 of materials plus four weeks of calendar.
