My Candle Burns Through Wax Much Faster Than Expected — Should I Investigate Wick Size Before Changing the Wax Formula?
Aktie
How do I measure "too fast"? Weigh the candle before lighting and again once it has set, and divide the loss by the hours burned: grams per hour. Use full 4-hour sessions, the same scale and candles from one batch. CSI publishes no consumption figure, so "expected" has to be your own baseline: an approved candle, an earlier batch, or a target you set.
What is the test? Your current wick against one and two CSI rungs down, three candles each, grams per hour logged every session. If consumption falls clearly with each step while the pool still reaches the glass, the wick was the cause.
What does it cost? From Cotton Braided, a C2 10-pack and a C1 20-pack, ₹212.40; the weighing scale is ₹354.00 if you don't own one.

"Faster than expected" needs a number: setting your baseline
Your symptom, restated: the candle uses its wax much faster than you expected. Perhaps the jar empties sooner than an earlier batch did, or a customer said so, or the wax level drops visibly in a single evening. The flame may be large, or it may look normal. The first job is to turn "expected" into a figure, because CSI publishes no consumption figure for any wax or wick, and nor does any wax page we sell. Your baseline has to come from your own candles.
| Your expectation came from | Trust it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An approved candle of the same formula, weighed the same way | Yes: the best baseline | Everything but the problem is identical |
| An earlier batch that "lasted longer" | Partly: weigh a retained candle if you kept one | Wick lot, oil lot, fill or pour may have changed (6912) |
| A different jar, wax or wick | No | Any of them changes consumption |
| Another brand's burn-time claim | No | Unknown wax, wick, fill and test method |
| Your label's burn-time claim | Only if it was measured | That is a label question: 6911 |
If you have no approved candle, the ladder test below creates your baseline: the right-sized wick's grams per hour becomes the number future batches are checked against. That is also why consumption belongs on your batch sheet alongside wick lot and wax lot.
How to weigh consumption so the numbers mean something
Grams per hour = (weight before − weight after) ÷ hours burned. Everything that leaves the jar counts: wax burned at the flame, fragrance evaporated from the pool, a little carbon. That is fine, because you are comparing candles of the same formula, so the fragrance share is the same in each.
Seven reasons a candle eats wax, ranked
The ranking is our judgement for a candle that consumes wax faster than your baseline, ordered so the free checks come first and the wax comes last.
| Cause | What you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Long wick or mushroom (burning: trimming) | Big flame from lighting; higher g/h on untrimmed sessions | Trimmed session against an untrimmed one, same candle | Trim before every burn | Nothing |
| 2. Draught (burning: room) | Flicker, lopsided pool, higher g/h with fan or AC on | Repeat in still air | Placement; care instructions | Nothing |
| 3. Long sessions, hot room (burning: context) | g/h higher on 6-hour burns or hot afternoons | Same session length; log room temperature | Compare like with like; advise sessions of about 4 hours | Nothing |
| 4. Oversized wick (making: wick size) | High g/h trimmed in still air; big flame; deep pool; warm jar | Ladder: three candles per CSI rung, weighed every session | Step down to the slowest rung that still reaches the glass | ₹212.40 (C2 + C1 from Cotton Braided) |
| 5. Wick drifted off centre (making: placement) | One side melting faster; flame leaning to the glass | Check centring before pouring; compare centred candles | Centring device; re-pour | ₹118.00 (pack of 5) |
| 6. Fragrance load or oil (making: formula) | Higher loss in scented than unscented on the same wick | Same wick, scented beside unscented (6907 has the design) | Load within both ceilings, then re-check the wick | Wax only |
| 7. The wax (making: wax) | Fast on every rung; changed when you changed wax | Only after the wick is right: same wick, old wax against new | Formula change, with a new wick test | From ₹260.00 (CSI 464, 500 g) for a comparison |
Cause 4 sits at the top of the making causes because it is a common cause and the cheapest to test: a ₹212.40 wick order against a wax change that means a new formula. Cause 7 is last not because wax never matters, but because judging it while the wick is wrong gives you the wrong answer: every wax looks "fast" under an oversized wick. The trimmed-but-still-large post (6904) uses grams per hour as one of its confirmations; this post makes it the main measurement.
The ladder test, the decision rule and approval
The worked example, labelled: your candle is the series default 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax, here in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (page: "up to 13% fragrance load capacity"), on Cotton Braided. The ladder is Cotton Braided → C2 → C1, three candles each, 9 in total. If you are on C2 now, the ladder is C2 → C1 → a C1 pair, in case single C1 doesn't reach the glass.
| If you see | Verdict | Next |
|---|---|---|
| Real drop one rung down, and that rung reaches the glass from burn two and burns clean | The wick was oversized | Take that rung to full life; it becomes your baseline |
| Real drop at both steps, and the bottom rung still reaches the glass | Strongly over-wicked | Choose the slowest rung that passes every limit |
| Real drop, but the smaller rung doesn't reach the glass | No single CSI rung fits | A pair of smaller wicks, a formula change, or ask us |
| No real drop between rungs | The wick isn't driving consumption | Check sessions, room, load, then the wax (next section) |
In the illustrative example, consumption falls 24.5% from Cotton Braided to C2 and 21.1% from C2 to C1, both above a 15% threshold. If C1's pool fails to reach the glass by the end of the session from burn two, C2 is the answer: the slowest rung that still melts properly. The slowest candle on the shelf is not the goal; a candle that lasts longer by tunnelling is a different fault.
When it is the wax: what to change after the wick is right
If the ladder shows no real drop between rungs, or your right-sized wick still burns faster than you want, the wax is now a fair suspect. Three honest points before you change it. First, no CSI wax page states a consumption or burn-rate figure (the Premium Coconut Soy Wax page claims "extended burn times compared to traditional paraffin wax", a comparison without a number), so we can't tell you which of our waxes will burn slower in your jar; only a side-by-side test can. Second, any wax change resets the wick: a different wax melts and feeds the wick differently, so you run a fresh ladder in the new wax. Third, check the cheaper suspects first: session length, room temperature, and a fragrance load past the lower of the wax's and the oil's stated maximum.
Wax facts you can use for the comparison, as the pages state them: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks "up to 13% fragrance load capacity"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, up to 13%. A softer, lower-melting wax commonly liquefies more readily around the same wick, a tendency rather than a CSI measurement. The Vybar page claims it "enhances wax hardness and burn quality" at "0.5%-2% of total wax weight"; that is the page's claim, it is more commonly associated with paraffin work (our judgement), and results vary by wax, so test it like any other formula change. Pillar wax is for pillars, not containers.
Buying for the ladder: the CSI list, and production
CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. One rung down is Cotton Braided → C2, C2 → C1, or a C2 pair → a C1 pair. There is no sized, tabbed wick between those rungs, no smaller one than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. If C2 still burns faster than you want and C1 won't reach the glass, the step you need is one we don't sell; tell us on WhatsApp and we will say so plainly, or take the adjustment in the formula.
| You burn now | Ladder | Pack and price | Per wick | Left after the test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided | CB → C2 → C1 | C2 10 ₹94.40 + C1 20 ₹118.00 = ₹212.40 | ₹9.44 / ₹5.90 | 7 C2, 17 C1 |
| C2 single | C2 → C1 → C1 pair | C1 20 ₹118.00 (9 used) | ₹5.90 | 11 C1 |
| Performance Wooden | Wood → C2 → Cotton Braided (no narrower wood) | C2 10 ₹94.40 + Cotton Braided 10 ₹120.00 | ₹9.44 / ₹12.00 (wood is ₹49.56 more a candle in 10s) | 7 of each |
| C1 single | Nothing smaller and tabbed | Check sessions, room and load; then ask us | — | — |
| Item | Need | Buy | ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wicks: C2 and C1 | 3 + 3 | C2 10-pack + C1 20-pack | ₹212.40 |
| Wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (or your own) | 1,656 g | 4 × 500 g (344 g spare; two 1 kg would cost ₹2.00 more) | ₹1,196.00 |
| Fragrance: your oil | 144 g | From stock | — |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | 1 | If you don't own one | ₹354.00 |
| Centring | 9 holders | Wick Centering Device × 2 packs | ₹236.00 |
| Kit total | ₹1,998.40 |
Argued against our own interest: if your own wax, holders and jars are on the shelf, the test is ₹566.40 including the scale. And a slower-burning candle does not cut your wax bill: each candle still holds 184 g of wax. What changes is what your customer gets for it. Stepping from Cotton Braided to C2 saves ₹2.56 a candle in wicks, ₹640.00 a month at 250 candles, a side effect, never the reason.
The step to production quantity
Once a rung passes full life, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 250 candles a month with a 2% allowance is 255 C2 wicks; 100 + 100 + 50 + 10 = 260 cost ₹2,454.40 and leave 5. The same month needs 46.00 kg of wax at 184 g a candle. C2 is flat per wick, so the 500-pack saves nothing. Write the approved grams per hour onto your batch sheet: it is the quickest check that a new wick lot, wax lot or oil lot has not changed the burn (6906 shows how to time the pool just as carefully). CSI publishes no lead times; set your reorder point with one you confirm on WhatsApp.

Skip for now: a new wax "that burns slower" before the ladder test; Vybar or any additive while the wick is unresolved; and any 500- or 1,000-wick pack before the chosen rung passes the bottom third. A candle that uses wax faster only in later burns is the later-burns post.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, scale and accessories named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you to change the wick before buying a new wax, that a slower burn won't lower your wax bill, that no CSI wax page states a burn rate, that our bigger wick packs cost no less per wick, and that we have no half-sizes between C1, C2 and Cotton Braided.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Chunks page's "up to 13% fragrance load capacity" and "Clean burning with minimal soot", the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke", the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm" and the Vybar page's claims.
The 5–6 mm trim, the 2.5–5 cm flame band and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The consumption figures, the 412.6 g weigh-in, the 15% threshold, the 20% session band, 250 candles a month and the 2% allowance are labelled examples or our judgement. Wax and fragrance effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
