CSI Wick Buying · Stepping Down a Rung
A pool that is full in minutes and keeps getting deeper is heat you didn't ask for. Test one rung down at six candles, approve on the full life, and know where CSI's range ends.

saved per candle stepping from Eco C2 to C1: real, small, and never the reason · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My candle reaches a full melt pool very quickly and the wax gets very deep. Should I test a smaller wick? Yes, once the confounders are ruled out: a warm room, a draught, a relit candle, or a shallow fill. A fast, full pool together with a deep pool, a tall flame or a hot jar is the pattern most commonly linked to over-wicking. Test one rung down at three candles, plus a three-candle replicate.

What do I buy? On Eco C2, the rung down is Eco C1: the 20-pack, ₹118.00 (the 10-pack is out of stock). On Cotton Braided, it is an Eco C2 10-pack, ₹94.40. Each covers six candles with spare.

Does a smaller wick save money? A little: C2 → C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle, Cotton Braided → C2 ₹2.56. At 200 candles a month that is ₹708.00 or ₹512.00. But the reason to step down is the deep pool and the heat, not the saving.

What if C1 is still too hot? Then you are at the bottom of CSI's tabbed range. The only other CSI wick described for a small diameter is the untabbed Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch), sold by length, with tabs to source yourself. Beyond that, another supplier's smaller wick, and we will say so.
The short answer
Buy: the rung below, six wicks (three confirm + three replicate) from the smallest in-stock pack: C1 20 (₹118.00) from C2; C2 10 (₹94.40) from Cotton Braided.
Why: a pool that is full in a fraction of the rule-of-thumb time and well past about 1 cm deep, with a tall flame or a hot jar, is a heat problem. Heat is a safety question first.
The money: C2 → C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle (₹708.00 a month at 200 candles); Cotton Braided → C2 saves ₹2.56 (₹512.00). A welcome side effect, never the reason.
The floor: below C1 CSI has no sized, tabbed wick, only the untabbed Loose 2-inch at about ₹6.66 per 8.0 cm cut before tabs, or another supplier.
Stepping down a rung: what it saves, and where CSI's range ends Wick cost per single-wick candle, bars to scale (30 px per rupee). CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Flat per wick in every pack for C1, C2 and Cotton Braided. The order is CSI's rungs, not measured heat; the Loose wick's heat relative to C1 is not stated. Cotton Braided top tabbed single ₹12.00 Eco C2 tabbed ₹9.44 Eco C1 smallest tabbed ₹5.90 Loose 2-inch, 5 m untabbed, 8 cm cuts ₹6.66 + tabs Loose 2-inch, 10 m untabbed, 8 cm cuts ₹5.66 + tabs saves ₹2.56 saves ₹3.54 CSI's sized, tabbed range ends at C1 At 200 candles a month: C2 → C1 saves ₹708.00; Cotton Braided → C2 saves ₹512.00. Real money, but small next to the reason to step down: a pool past about 1 cm deep, a tall flame or a hot jar. Loose cuts: 8.0 cm each (judgement) from ₹82.60 a metre at 5 m or ₹70.80 at 10 m. Not CSI burn data.
The wick cost per single-wick candle on each CSI rung, with bars drawn to scale. Each step down saves a little: ₹2.56 from Cotton Braided to C2 and ₹3.54 from C2 to C1. Below C1, CSI's sized, tabbed range ends. The untabbed Loose 2-inch wick, cut to a 8.0 cm length (judgement), costs about ₹6.66 a cut from 5 m and ₹5.66 from 10 m before you add tabs, and its page doesn't state how its heat compares with C1.
Straight answer
My candle reaches a full melt pool very quickly and the wax becomes extremely deep. Should I test a smaller wick?
Yes, test one rung down, after a short check that the speed isn't coming from the room or the candle rather than the wick. A pool that reaches the glass in a fraction of the usual time and keeps deepening well past about 1 cm, especially with a tall flame, carbon on the wick or a jar that runs hot near the end, is the pattern most commonly linked to a wick that is too large. Buy six of the rung below: three to confirm and three for a replicate from a second pour. On Eco C2 that is an Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00); on Cotton Braided, an Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40). Approve the smaller wick only when all six candles burn to about 1 cm left without tunnelling. A step down can trade a deep pool for a ring, and the full life is where you find out. The step down does save money, ₹3.54 a candle from C2 to C1 and ₹2.56 from Cotton Braided to C2, but that is a side effect: the reason is heat. If you are already on C1 and it is still too hot, you have reached the bottom of CSI's tabbed range. The only other CSI wick described for a small diameter is the untabbed Loose 2-inch wick, sold by the metre, with tabs you would have to source; otherwise another supplier.
One line: fast and deep, confounders cleared: buy six of the rung below, approve on the full life, and know that below C1 we have no tabbed wick to sell you.
The down-rung order: Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026) if you are on C2, or an Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40) if you are on Cotton Braided. Both in stock on 1 October 2026.
Eco C1 20-pack — ₹118.00

The down-rung order, by the wick you are on

Going down a rung is one of the cheapest purchases in this cluster. It still deserves six candles.

The worked example: three 100 g candles in CSI's Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid, about 5.3 cm inside on our wall assumption. Each is at 8% Jasmine (8 g of oil + 92 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, load as a percentage of total weight) on Eco C2. All three reach the glass in about 40 minutes, roughly 31% of the very rough one-hour-per-2.5-cm guide (about 2.1 hours for this jar), and by the end of a three-hour session the pool is well past 1 cm deep, with a tall flame. Example B, for scale: a reader's own 8 cm jar on Cotton Braided showing the same pattern.

Item When Count needed Smallest in-stock pack Price Per unit Left over
Eco C1 (from C2) Now 3 confirm + 3 replicate = 6 20 (10-pack out of stock) ₹118.00 ₹5.90 14
Eco C2 (example B, from Cotton Braided) Now 6 10 ₹94.40 ₹9.44 4
Jasmine If your bottle is empty 48 g 50 g (100 g for margin) ₹230.00 (₹430.00) ₹4.60 per g 2 g (52 g)
CSI 468 If your bag is empty 552 g 1 kg (500 g is short) ₹650.00 ₹0.65 per g 448 g
Black Shiny Glass Jar If you have none left 6 Pack of 5 + pack of 1 ₹283.20 ₹47.20 none
Eco Candle Wicks Loose Only if C1 also runs hot 6 cuts at 8.0 cm 5 m ₹413.00 ₹6.66 per cut, before tabs 452 cm

From nothing, the C1 arm costs ₹1,281.20 in cash: the wicks, a 50 g bottle, a 1 kg bag and six jars. A 50 g bottle covers six candles with only 2 g to spare, so one spilled pour means a second bottle. The 100 g costs ₹200.00 more and leaves 52 g: ₹1,481.20 in all. Choose by how steady your pouring hand is. Each C1 candle is ₹102.50 in materials before the jar; the C2 one was ₹106.04.

Don't buy the big pack: the C1 100 (₹590.00) costs exactly ₹5.90 a wick, the same as the 20. A down-step that looks right at burn 3 can still tunnel later, or leave a ring in the final third, and then you own 94 spare C1 for a jar that needs something in between. Argued against our own interest: six wicks is the test; the 20-pack is the smallest that holds them.

When fast and deep earns a purchase

Speed alone is a clue. Speed plus depth plus flame is a pattern.

A fast full pool isn't proof of anything by itself. A warm afternoon, a ceiling fan, a candle relit while still warm, a shallow fill or a softer wax can all speed a pool up. Those confounders, and a fifteen-minute pool timeline that checks them one by one, are the subject of the 8 cm full-pool-in-45-minutes post. How to read a 1 cm deep pool against flame height and session length is the 7.5 cm deep-pool heat post. This page doesn't repeat either method. It sets the point at which they release a purchase.

Down-rung purchase · released when…
Three candles, same pour, centred, trimmed to about 5–6 mm, still air, room at its usual temperature · thresholds are our judgement or labelled rules of thumb
Signal Reading Purchase?
Full pool well under the rule-of-thumb time, on a first burn from cold, all three candles Fast, and not explained by a warm relight Not yet on its own
Plus pool depth well past about 1 cm (a common rule of thumb is about 0.5–1 cm) by the end of a normal session Too much heat for the jar Yes: one rung down
Plus a tall flame (beyond the 2.5–5 cm many makers use), mushrooming or soot Over-wicked, commonly Yes: one rung down
Fast pool, depth within range, calm flame Fast but not hot No: check the room and the fill, then keep burning
Deep pool only in the last third Late heat, a different symptom See the late-heat post

Why depth carries more weight than speed: a fast pool in a small jar is often just a small jar. A deep pool is heat staying in the wax, and in a container that heat goes into the glass. The CSI 468 page states a melting point of 50°C–53°C; a softer wax commonly pools faster on the same wick, so if you have recently moved from CSI 464 to CSI 468, re-run the old wick in the new wax before blaming the wick. Late-life depth has its own map in the deep-near-the-bottom post.

Judge the glass by eye, never by hand
The 6 cm jars state no heat figure, and the jar listings that do ("Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" on some 150 g jars) are describing pouring, not burning. Watch how close the flame and the deep pool come to the glass in the final third. CSI lists no non-contact thermometer; if you use one from elsewhere, record the reading rather than chasing a number nobody has set for your jar.

The honest money case: real, small, and not the reason

Stepping down saves money. That is the worst reason to do it.

Because C1, C2 and Cotton Braided are each priced flat per wick in every pack, a rung down saves the same amount on every candle at any volume.

What a rung down saves · worked example
Per single-wick candle · monthly at 200 candles · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · all figures declared
Step down Per candle 200 a month 12 months Six-candle test to earn it
Eco C2 → Eco C1 ₹3.54 ₹708.00 ₹8,496.00 ₹898.20 including jars (Jasmine at the 50 g price)
Cotton Braided → Eco C2 ₹2.56 ₹512.00 — ₹1,058.41 (example B: six 200 g candles in CSI 464, before jars)
Cotton Braided → Eco C1 (two rungs; test C2 first) ₹6.10 — — not a single step

In the worked example, the C2 → C1 saving is 2.3% of a C2 candle with its jar (₹153.24 down to ₹149.70). The six-candle test pays for itself after about 254 production candles. That arithmetic is real, and it is why we print it. But read it the right way round. If a deep pool and a tall flame were costing you nothing in safety, the step down would still be worth ₹3.54 a candle. Because they can cost you a cracked jar or a scorched surface, the step down is worth doing even if it saved nothing.

Mistake: stepping down "to save on wicks" on a candle that burns well. Why it fails: a candle that reaches the glass in a sensible time with a calm flame and a pool around 0.5–1 cm deep has the right heat. One rung down can leave a ring, and a ring wastes far more than ₹3.54 of wax and oil per candle. Fix: step down only on the heat pattern above, and approve on the full life.

Running the down-rung test

The step down has to prove two things: less heat, and still reaching the glass.
1
Keep the C2 candles burningThey are the control and they are evidence. Their final third tells you how bad the heat gets. Never leave them unattended.
2
Pour three C1 from the same lot24 g of Jasmine and 276 g of CSI 468, mixed once. The CSI 468 page states "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C"; the jar states no heat figure, so pre-warm it (judgement).
3
Cure the same timeThe Jasmine page says "Up to 10% for soy wax with a cure time of 48-72 hours"; give both arms the same cure.
4
Burn from cold, in still air, with a logTime to the glass, pool depth at the end of the session, trimmed flame height. Sessions of at least about 2.1 hours for this jar (judgement).
5
Screen at burn 3, replicate, then full lifeIf C1 reaches the glass by burn 2–3 with a shallower pool and a calmer flame, pour three more on another day. Approve when all six burn to about 1 cm left with no ring and no heat or flame failure in the final third.

C1 candles show… Reading Next purchase
Reach the glass by burn 2–3, pool within range, clean full life C1 approved; C2 was too much C1 for production, by the formula
Calmer, but leave a ring that doesn't shrink The answer sits between C1 and C2 No sized, tabbed wick between them at CSI: ask us, or another supplier
Still fast, deep and tall-flamed C1 is too much for this jar too The floor section below

A temporary step down that looks fine early still needs the later burns; why is set out in the one-size-down change-control post. And once C1 is approved, you may be holding C2 you no longer need. Whether to move it to other products, use it in tests or write it off is the wicking-down transition post.

The bottom of CSI's range: below C1

C1 is the smallest sized, tabbed wick we sell. Past it, we will tell you what we have and what we don't.

Small jars, like the 6 cm listings, the 50 g heart jars and tealight cups, sit at the bottom of any wick range. If C1 is still too hot in your jar, these are the honest options, in order of cost:

Options when C1 is still too hot · honest ranking
CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · tabs are not sold separately in the catalogue data we captured
Option What it costs What you know What you don't
Check trim and session length first Nothing An untrimmed C1 makes a bigger flame; long sessions deepen any pool —
A fuller or wider-based jar A jar change More wax around the flame changes the heat balance It's a new configuration; retest
Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch) ₹413.00 for 5 m; ₹6.66 per 8.0 cm cut before tabs Page: "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters" (about 5.08 cm) How its heat compares with C1; no tabs listed with it
Another supplier's smaller tabbed wick Theirs A properly sized step below C1 It is a new wick: full retest

The Loose wick is the only CSI wick whose page names a diameter smaller than our 6 cm jars, so it earns a test, but treat it as a different construction rather than "C0". It is sold untabbed by length. At a 8.0 cm cut (jar height plus 1.5 cm, our judgement), 5 m makes 62 wicks at ₹6.66 each, more per wick than C1's ₹5.90. The 10 m pack makes 125 at ₹5.66, slightly less. Both figures are before tabs, which CSI does not list separately. Argued against our own interest: for a range of very small candles, a supplier with a sized, tabbed wick below C1 may simply be the better buy. Message us your jar and we will tell you plainly whether we can help.

Don't buy the 10 m Loose pack first: it is cheaper per metre (₹70.80 against ₹82.60), but 10 m is 125 cuts of a wick you haven't burned in your jar. Six cuts use 48 cm of the 5 m, leaving 452 cm. Buy the 5 m, cut six, and move to 10 m only after the full life passes.

After approval: switching production to the smaller wick

A smaller approved wick is a new production SKU. Order it on the formula, not on the saving.

When all six C1 candles pass the full life: wicks to buy = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), 5% being our worked-example allowance.

Production worked example · 200 candles a month · C1 approved in the 6 cm jar
Wicks = 200 × 1 × 1.05 · flat per-wick pricing · all figures declared
Line Monthly need Cost How to buy it
Eco C1 210 ₹1,239.00 two 100 + one 20 = 220 wicks, ₹1,298.00
What C2 would have cost 210 ₹1,982.40 the saving is ₹708.00 a month at 200 candles

Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock: about 7 a day here, so with a 7-day lead time and five days of safety stock (your figures; CSI publishes no lead times or stock depth), reorder at about 84. If you still hold C2 from before the switch, say 70 left from a 100-pack (₹660.80 at the flat per-wick price), don't pour it into this jar to use it up; the transition post covers where it can go instead. And if the down-step was driven by mushrooming rather than depth, the per-candle comparison across every construction is the mushrooming cost post.

Don't jump to the 1,000-pack: a C1 1,000-pack (₹5,900.00) is ₹5.90 a wick, exactly the 20-pack's price, and at 210 a month it is nearly five months of a wick approved in one jar with one oil. A new oil in the same jar can need a different rung; see the cluster hub for why a single burn never decides that.

Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1)
The down-rung order for a candle that is too hot on C2: six C1 for three confirm candles and a three-candle replicate. C1 is the smallest sized, tabbed wick CSI lists; there is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2. The page describes wicks of "natural fibers like cotton and paper" and states no length, width or jar range in the text we captured. Stock on 1 October 2026: the C1 10-pack is out of stock, so the 20-pack is the smallest you can buy. Per wick it is ₹5.90 in every pack. Argued against our own interest: the 20, not the 100. A down-step that passes burn 3 can still fail the full life by tunnelling.

wick · small-diameter, untabbed, below the tabbed range
Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch diameter)
The honest bottom of CSI's range. The page says it is "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters", about 5.08 cm, so it is the only CSI wick whose page names a diameter smaller than this jar. It is sold by length (5 m or 10 m) and, in the text we captured, says nothing about tabs; CSI lists no separate wick tabs (the only tabs in the catalogue are the 100 bundled with the Braided Wick Roll). The page also doesn't say how its heat compares with C1, so it is a test option, not a known smaller rung. Money: at 8.0 cm a cut, a 5 m pack makes 62 wicks at ₹6.66 each before tabs, more than C1's ₹5.90; the 10 m makes 125 at ₹5.66. Buy it only after C1 has failed high.

The oil this page is costed on. The page says "Up to 10% for soy wax with a cure time of 48-72 hours", so 8% is inside it and inside CSI 468's 13%; the lower 10% governs. 8% of total weight is 8.70% of wax weight. Notes as listed: "sweet, floral, and slightly musky with a timeless luxurious aroma". The page states "0% vanillin - no discolouration" (the page's claim; vanillin is one cause of discolouration, not the only one). A lighter floral is a fair case here, because heavy oils are the ones more often linked to needing a bigger wick, not a smaller one. That is a tendency, not data. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The page states "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C", "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C" and "Fragrance Load Up to 13%", with "minimal frosting", "low soot output" and "Excellent hot and cold throw" as its own claims. Its stated melting point is lower than the pour range on CSI 464's page, and a softer wax commonly pools faster and deeper on the same wick. That is a tendency, and one reason a fast, deep pool can be the wax as much as the wick; the 45-minute-pool post lists that confounder with the others. Keep the wax the same across both arms. Change it only as its own test.

The page gives "Capacity: 120 gm" and "6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height", without saying whether the diameter is inside or outside, and gives no heat rating. On our labelled 0.35 cm wall it is about 5.3 cm inside, 22.06 cm². The 100 g fill is the series' labelled worked example for 6 cm jars. Step down for heat, not for rupees.
A fast, deep pool with a tall flame earns six wicks of the rung below. The ₹3.54 a candle is a bonus; the full life is the approval; and below C1, we will say when the right wick isn't ours.
"A deep pool is heat you didn't ask for. Take it out one rung at a time."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, wax and jar named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that C1 is the smallest sized, tabbed wick we sell, that our Loose wick is untabbed and costs more per wick than C1 at 5 m, that another supplier may suit very small candles better, and that bigger tabbed packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, such as the jar's heat rating or the Loose wick's tabs, we say so.

The 40-minute pool, the release signals, the 8.0 cm cut length, the 100 g fill, the 0.35 cm wall, the 200-candle month and the 5% allowance are our judgement or worked examples. Melt-pool times, depths and flame heights are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data, and CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

What does it mean if my candle melts to the edge too fast?
On its own, possibly nothing: a warm room or a relit candle speeds things up. Together with a pool well past about 1 cm deep, a tall flame or carbon on the wick, it most commonly means the wick is too large for the jar.
How deep should a candle melt pool be?
A common rule of thumb is about 0.5–1 cm. A pool well beyond that at the end of a normal session is heat staying in the wax, and in a container that heat goes into the glass.
What is the smallest wick CSI sells?
Eco C1 is the smallest sized, tabbed wick. Below it, CSI lists only the untabbed Eco Candle Wicks Loose, described for "2 inch diameters", sold by length, with tabs not listed separately.
Does using a smaller wick save money?
A little: C2 to C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle and Cotton Braided to C2 saves ₹2.56, the same at any volume because the prices are flat per wick. Step down for heat, not for the saving.
How many wicks should I buy to test a smaller size?
Six: three confirm candles and three replicate candles from a second pour. The C1 20-pack (₹118.00) or the C2 10-pack (₹94.40) covers that.
Can a smaller wick cause tunnelling?
Yes. That is why a step down is approved only after all six candles burn to about 1 cm left without a ring. If C1 tunnels and C2 runs hot, the answer sits between two CSI rungs, and we will tell you so.
Full pool fast, wax very deep
Six of the rung below: C1 20 for ₹118.00, or C2 10 for ₹94.40.
Rule out the room and the relight, step down one rung, approve on the full life, and switch production on the formula. If C1 is still too hot, tell us the jar and we will say honestly what we can and can't offer.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on wick symptoms → purchase decisions (5541–5560). It covers the down-rung purchase for a candle whose pool is full very fast and very deep: when the signals release it, the six-wick order by starting rung, the honest money case (C2 → C1 and Cotton Braided → C2 per candle and per month), the test, the bottom of CSI's range below C1, and the production switch.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Candle Dye Liquid, Eco Candle Wicks, Jasmine Fragrance Oil, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles, Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Arminder Kaur, Subhankar Roy, Antara Srinivas Iyer, Thenirvaofficial. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (100 g at 8% = 8 g oil + 92 g wax; example B uses 200 g at 8% = 16 g + 184 g). The jar page gives "6 cm diameter" without saying inside or outside; 5.3 cm inside uses a labelled 0.35 cm wall; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 468 up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Jasmine up to 10% for soy): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about an hour per 2.5 cm), depths (about 0.5–1 cm) and flame heights (about 2.5–5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. The 40-minute pool, the cut length, the 200-candle month, the lead time and the 5% allowance are worked examples and editorial judgement. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
