My Reed Diffuser Base Costs ₹400 per kg and My Fragrance Oil Costs ₹1,500 per kg — How Do I Calculate the Liquid Cost of a 120 ml Diffuser at 20% Fragrance Load?
Aktie
What if my density is different? At 0.95 g/ml it is ₹70.68; at 1.05 g/ml, ₹78.12. Weigh 100 ml of your blend to know.
What does the whole bottle cost? ₹244.60 with CSI's 120 ml Gold bottle and eight black fibre reeds — before label, box, labour, courier and GST.
Is CSI cheaper? No. Lift Base is about ₹2,198.00/kg at 1.00 g/ml, and CSI's cheapest oil at 1 kg is ₹2,832.00/kg. See the honest comparison.
The calculation, step by step
Your prices are per kilogram, so the calculation has to run in grams. That is also the right way to make the product: CSI's base pages, like most, state the fragrance load as a share of the total blend, and weighing is the only way to hit that share exactly. The one thing you must supply that is not on your invoices is the density of your blend — the grams that 120 ml of it weighs. Until you weigh it, this page uses 1.00 g/ml as a labelled example and shows what happens at 0.95 and 1.05.
The 20% in your question is the subject of the load pillar how much fragrance oil to add to 100 ml of base, and the step after this calculation — pricing and selling — is in the business pillar how to start a profitable reed diffuser business in India.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Prices per gram | ₹400 ÷ 1,000 · ₹1,500 ÷ 1,000 | base ₹0.40/g · oil ₹1.50/g |
| Weight of 120 ml | 120 ml × 1.00 g/ml (example) | 120 g |
| Oil | 120 g × 20% | 24 g |
| Base | 120 g × 80% | 96 g |
| Oil cost | 24 g × ₹1.50 | ₹36.00 |
| Base cost | 96 g × ₹0.40 | ₹38.40 |
| Liquid cost | oil + base | ₹74.40 |
| Blend price per gram | 20% × ₹1.50 + 80% × ₹0.40 | ₹0.62 per g · ₹620.00 per kg |
The last line is the shortcut worth remembering: at 20%, your blend costs ₹620.00 per kilogram, so any fill is simply its grams × ₹0.62. Notice how the two halves compare. The oil is a fifth of the liquid by weight but 48% of its cost; the base is four-fifths of the weight and 52% of the cost. With your prices the two lines are close — which means a change to either one moves the total noticeably.
What moves the answer: density, fill, load, freight
| Change | Fill | Oil g | Base g | Liquid cost | vs base case |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base case: 1.00 g/ml, 120 ml, 20% | 120 g | 24 g | 96 g | ₹74.40 | — |
| Density 0.95 g/ml | 114.0 g | 22.8 g | 91.2 g | ₹70.68 | -₹3.72 |
| Density 1.05 g/ml | 126.0 g | 25.2 g | 100.8 g | ₹78.12 | ₹3.72 |
| Fill 100 ml (your bottle's real fill) | 100 g | 20 g | 80 g | ₹62.00 | -₹12.40 |
| Fill 110 ml (your bottle's real fill) | 110 g | 22 g | 88 g | ₹68.20 | -₹6.20 |
| Load 15% | 120 g | 18 g | 102 g | ₹67.80 | -₹6.60 |
| Load 25% | 120 g | 30 g | 90 g | ₹81.00 | ₹6.60 |
| Load 30% | 120 g | 36 g | 84 g | ₹87.60 | ₹13.20 |
| + ₹30/kg freight on each (example) | 120 g | 24 g | 96 g | ₹78.00 | ₹3.60 |
The fill matters as much as the density. A "120 ml" bottle is usually not filled to the brim; CSI's own 120 ml Gold bottle publishes no fill line, so 120 ml is your figure, and if you actually fill 110 ml your liquid is ₹68.20. Each 5 points of load costs ₹6.60 at your prices — small, because your oil is cheap relative to most. And if your per-kg prices are ex-works, add freight: an example ₹30 per kg on each adds ₹3.60 a bottle. Check whether your two prices include GST and delivery before you compare them with anyone else's.
From liquid cost to the cost of a bottle
The liquid is only part of the diffuser. Add the bottle and the reeds — here CSI's 120 ml Gold bottle at ₹106.20 and 8 black fibre reeds at ₹8.00 each — and your 120 ml diffuser carries ₹244.60 in materials before label, box, labour, courier and GST. With your liquid prices, the glass and reeds (₹170.20) cost more than twice the liquid.
| Line | Cost | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Oil (your ₹1,500/kg) | ₹36.00 | 15% |
| Base (your ₹400/kg) | ₹38.40 | 16% |
| 120 ml Gold bottle | ₹106.20 | 43% |
| black fibre reeds × 8 | ₹64.00 | 26% |
| Materials | ₹244.60 | 100% |
And the liquid's real job is time. If your bottle loses an example 3.0 g a day — a number for the arithmetic, not a measurement of any base — 120 g lasts 40 days and the liquid costs ₹1.86 per day of use. Your own figure comes from weighing the bottle, with its reeds, on a fixed schedule. Comparing loads on room throw, liquid use and cost per day and the full 100 ml cost sheet build on this.
The same bottle with CSI's prices — honestly compared
CSI does not sell base by the kilogram. Lift Base — whose page names floral, citrus, green and fruity families — is ₹1,099.00 per 500 ml, ₹2.20 per ml, which at an example 1.00 g/ml is ₹2,198.00 per kg: about 5.5 times your ₹400. CSI's cheapest fragrance oil at its 1 kg size is Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832.00 per kg; Eucalyptus Spearmint, a green note for the same base, is ₹3,068.00 — both above your ₹1,500. We will not pretend otherwise.
| Combination | Oil | Base | Liquid per bottle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your oil + your base | ₹36.00 | ₹38.40 | ₹74.40 |
| Your oil + CSI Lift Base | ₹36.00 | ₹211.01 | ₹247.01 |
| CSI Citrus Lemon + your base | ₹67.97 | ₹38.40 | ₹106.37 |
| CSI Citrus Lemon + CSI Lift Base | ₹67.97 | ₹211.01 | ₹278.98 |
| CSI Eucalyptus Spearmint + CSI Lift Base | ₹73.63 | ₹211.01 | ₹284.64 |
On price alone, your materials win, and by a wide margin on the base. What the table cannot tell you is whether the two liquids are the same product. A per-kg price says nothing about clarity with your oil, how quickly the liquid travels up the reeds, how strong the room smells, or how long the bottle lasts — and CSI publishes no such data for its own bases either, so we cannot claim ours does better. If your ₹400 base passes your clarity hold and your blind room test and the bottle lasts as long as you want, it is the right base for your product. If it does not, the comparison that matters is cost per day of fragrance, not cost per kilogram. Cheap base, weak throw: does a better base pay? is the post for that question, and comparing base prices per kg with density and yield covers comparing quotes.
If you want to check your base: a two-by-two swap
Keep everything yours except the base: your ₹1,500 oil, your bottles, your fill, your room. Two bottles in your base are the control; two in Lift Base are the test. If you have no 120 ml bottles to spare, CSI's are listed below.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Y1 | Yours, ₹400/kg | Yours, 20% | ₹74.40 | Control |
| Y2 | Yours | Yours, 20% | ₹74.40 | Control repeat |

The decision rule: what to do with the number
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| You have not weighed 100 ml of your blend | ₹74.40 is an example | Buy nothing. Weigh, re-run the formula |
| Your formula passes clarity and your room test | Your materials work at this cost | Keep them; price from the full bottle cost |
| Your blend clouds or fades and Lift does not, at equal score | The base is the problem | Consider Lift; it adds ₹172.61 a bottle — check your price carries it |
| Lift and yours score the same | No case to switch | Keep your base |
| You fill less than 120 ml | Cost is lower than calculated | Use your real fill in the formula |
| Prices are ex-works or ex-GST | Landed cost is higher | Add freight and tax before comparing suppliers |
The section hub starting a reed diffuser business with ₹10,000 shows a first purchase, pricing a 120 ml diffuser at ₹799 shows how this liquid cost fits a selling price, and the pillar how to start a profitable reed diffuser business in India covers the whole business. A 22% formula costed per 120 ml bottle and calculating a 120 ml formula at 20% by weight are this page's formulation siblings; the load pillar is how much fragrance oil to add to 100 ml of base.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The tempting answer for a base seller is to question a ₹400 per kg base. This page uses your figures exactly, shows that CSI's listed base and oils cost more, and says plainly that if your base passes your tests you should keep it.
Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ is out of stock and appears only as such. Every gram split, unit count, per-bottle cost and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it.
Bottle counts per arm, hold times, fill volumes, example densities, example grams-per-day figures, scoring scales and allowances are labelled working practices or examples, not industry standards. ₹400/kg, ₹1,500/kg, 120 ml and 20% are the reader's figures. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)). Reader's figures: base ₹400 per kg, oil ₹1,500 per kg, 120 ml, 20%. Labelled examples: 1.00 g/ml blend density with 0.95/1.05 sensitivity; fills of 100, 110 and 120 ml; 0.95 g/ml oil and 1.05 g/ml base in the volume-recipe example; ₹30 per kg freight; 3.0 g/day for cost per day; 8 reeds; 5% allowance in the kit. CSI per-kg figures use the Lift 500 ml rate at the example density and oils at their 1 kg size. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base gives a 10% starting load, 20% recommended, 30% maximum, of total blend, and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance adds a typical working blend of 75% base + 25% fragrance and the example "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil" (by volume); Longevity says to avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, and "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest". The reed pages give a 20.3 cm length and "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds"; reed diameter is not published. The bottle listing's text says "50 and 100ml" while its variants are 50 ml and 120 ml; neck size, fill line and any reducer are not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, no IFRA percentage for any oil, and no diffusion, throw or longevity measurement for any base, oil or reed. Every ml-to-gram conversion here uses a labelled example density with ±5% sensitivity; every grams-per-day figure is a labelled example for the arithmetic, never a measurement. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
