How Do I Make a Reed Diffuser with 22% Fragrance Oil and Calculate the Raw-Material Cost per 120 ml Bottle?
Share
What does the bottle cost? ₹527.11: oil ₹135.52, base ₹222.39, bottle ₹106.20, reeds ₹63.00. Excludes labels, box, courier, labour, GST.
Is the oil the biggest cost? Not here. Base is ₹222.39 against ₹135.52 of oil; glass and reeds are 32.1% of the bottle.
Should I check 22% first? Yes — against the oil's IFRA certificate and in a 22%-versus-20% clarity and room check, ₹5,224.00. See the check.
Making it: 22% by weight, bottle by bottle and batch by batch
A 22% reed diffuser is one in which fragrance oil is 22% of the finished liquid's weight and base is the other 78%. That sits inside the 10–30% range every CSI base page gives and a little above the 20% that the Pure Performance page recommends as a working point. Before you can cost a bottle, you need two figures CSI cannot give you: how much liquid goes in it, and what that liquid weighs. The Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle's 120 ml is the listing's size, not a published fill line, and reeds displace liquid, so this page costs a labelled example fill of 110 ml and shows 100 ml and 120 ml alongside. No density is published for any CSI base or oil, so this page uses an example 1.00 g/ml and shows ±5%.
At those figures one bottle holds 110 g of blend: 24.2 g of fragrance oil and 85.8 g of base. Weighing that for every bottle is slow and invites small errors, so mix in batches. Ten bottles — one pack of Gold bottles — with a 3% working allowance for what stays in the vessel is 1,133.0 g of blend: 249.3 g of oil and 883.7 g of base, weighed onto a tared vessel, stirred until uniform, and rested 24–48 hours as the base pages ask before you fill by weight. Calculating a 120 ml diffuser at 20% by weight walks through the per-bottle weighing in detail, and why weight beats volume explains why the batch sheet should never say millilitres.
| Fill (example) | Blend | Fragrance oil (22%) | Base (78%) | 10-bottle batch with 3% allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 ml | 100 g | 22.00 g | 78.00 g | 226.6 g oil + 803.4 g base |
| 110 ml | 110 g | 24.20 g | 85.80 g | 249.3 g oil + 883.7 g base |
| 120 ml | 120 g | 26.40 g | 93.60 g | 271.9 g oil + 964.1 g base |
The raw-material cost per 120 ml bottle
The cost formula is the one used throughout the series: liquid cost = fill grams × (load × oil ₹ per g + (1 − load) × base ₹ per g), plus the bottle and the reeds. Base is sold by the 500 ml, so its rupees per gram need the density: Longevity Base at ₹1,296.00 for 500 ml is ₹2.59 per ml, which is ₹2.59 per gram at the example 1.00 g/ml. Bergamot Amber costs ₹5.60 per gram at the 100 g pack — the size a small workshop is most likely to buy for a run of ten to twenty bottles.
| Line | Quantity | Rate | Cost | Share of bottle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bergamot Amber (100 g pack) | 24.2 g | ₹5.60 per g | ₹135.52 | 25.7% |
| Longevity Base (500 ml) | 85.8 g = 85.8 ml | ₹2.59 per g | ₹222.39 | 42.2% |
| Liquid | 110 g | ₹3.25 per g of blend | ₹357.91 | 67.9% |
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml | 1 bottle | pack of 10 ÷ 10 | ₹106.20 | 20.1% |
| white fibre reeds | 7 reeds | ₹9.00 each (50 and up) | ₹63.00 | 12.0% |
| Raw materials per bottle | ₹527.11 | 100% |
Two things surprise most makers when they see this table. First, at 22% the base, not the fragrance oil, is the larger liquid line: ₹222.39 against ₹135.52, because 78% of the blend is base and Longevity is ₹2.59 a gram at the example density, while this oil is ₹5.60 a gram for only 22% of it. A cheaper oil makes the gap wider; a dearer one closes it. Second, the bottle and reeds together are 32.1% of the total. Saving a few grams of oil moves the bottle cost far less than the choice of reed colour or pack size. The total excludes labels, a box, a reed sleeve or stopper (CSI does not list these), courier, labour and GST — add your own quotes as labelled lines.
What moves the cost, one line at a time
The diagram above shows six single changes against the base case. Each table below takes one of them in more detail, so you can see which decisions are worth agonising over and which are not.
| Bergamot Amber pack | Per gram | Oil per bottle | Bottle total | Versus 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹7.00 | ₹169.43 | ₹561.03 | +₹33.91 |
| 50 g | ₹5.60 | ₹135.52 | ₹527.11 | +₹0.00 |
| 100 g | ₹5.60 | ₹135.52 | ₹527.11 | +₹0.00 |
| 500 g | ₹5.44 | ₹131.55 | ₹523.14 | −₹3.97 |
| 1 kg | ₹5.44 | ₹131.58 | ₹523.17 | −₹3.94 |
For this oil the real price step is between the 15 g and the 50 g: the 50 g and 100 g are the same ₹5.60 per gram, and the 500 g and 1 kg are ₹5.44 and ₹5.44 — a saving of under ₹3.95 a bottle. That pattern is typical on CSI's catalogue: per-gram breaks above 100 g are rare, and buying bigger mostly buys convenience and stock security rather than a lower rate. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published.
| Change | Blend per bottle | Oil | Base | Liquid | Bottle total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Density 0.95 g/ml | 104.5 g | ₹128.74 | ₹222.39 | ₹351.14 | ₹520.34 |
| Density 1.00 g/ml | 110.0 g | ₹135.52 | ₹222.39 | ₹357.91 | ₹527.11 |
| Density 1.05 g/ml | 115.5 g | ₹142.30 | ₹222.39 | ₹364.69 | ₹533.89 |
| Fill 100 ml | 100.0 g | ₹123.20 | ₹202.18 | ₹325.38 | ₹494.58 |
| Fill 120 ml | 120.0 g | ₹147.84 | ₹242.61 | ₹390.45 | ₹559.65 |
| Load 20% | 110.0 g | ₹123.20 | ₹228.10 | ₹351.30 | ₹520.50 |
| Load 25% | 110.0 g | ₹154.00 | ₹213.84 | ₹367.84 | ₹537.04 |
Density changes the liquid cost less than you might expect, because a heavier blend means more grams of both oil and base in the same 110 ml, but the base is priced per millilitre, so its line barely moves; the oil line moves by about 5%. Fill matters more: going from 110 ml to 120 ml adds ₹32.54 a bottle. And the load — the number most makers argue about — moves the bottle by ₹6.62 between 20% and 22%, and by ₹9.93 between 22% and 25%, with this oil. Comparing 18%, 20% and 22% by room throw, consumption and cost per day is where to decide whether 22% earns that money back in performance.
| Oil | Base | Oil ₹ per g | Oil per bottle | Base per bottle | Bottle total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | Softness | ₹3.42 | ₹82.81 | ₹188.59 | ₹440.60 |
| Bergamot Amber | Longevity | ₹5.60 | ₹135.52 | ₹222.39 | ₹527.11 |
| Santal Noir | Longevity | ₹9.19 | ₹222.40 | ₹222.39 | ₹613.99 |
Oil choice is the one lever that can move a 22% bottle by a large amount. From British Rose in Softness to Santal Noir in Longevity, the bottle cost spans ₹440.60 to ₹613.99. That is a range set by the oils' listed prices, not by any claim about how they perform — CSI publishes no diffuser throw or longevity data for any oil. Choose the fragrance your customer wants; then cost it honestly.
| Reeds | Per reed | 7 per bottle | Versus white 50+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| White, pack of 25 | ₹10.60 | ₹74.20 | +₹11.20 |
| White, 50 and up | ₹9.00 | ₹63.00 | +₹0.00 |
| Black, pack of 25 | ₹9.44 | ₹66.08 | +₹3.08 |
| Black, 50 and up | ₹8.00 | ₹56.00 | −₹7.00 |
Before you price it: a 22% compatibility check
Costing a formula that clouds or separates is wasted arithmetic, so check that 22% holds in your base with your oil before you put a price on it. The Longevity page itself warns that "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases" and says to reduce the percentage and retest if clouding occurs. A one-variable check against a 20% control — the load the Pure Performance page recommends as a working point — answers the question in a week, using one pack of Gold 120 ml bottles.
| Arm | Bottles | Load | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control | C1–C3 reeded, C4 capped | 20% | Clarity at 0 h, 24–48 h, 7 days (white and black card); daily weight with reeds in; blind room score days 1, 3, 7 |
| Test | T1–T3 reeded, T4 capped | 22% | Same |
| Spare | S1–S2 | — | Breakage, or a cool-night clarity check on one capped bottle of each |
The capped bottles are the clarity test: any haze, layering, droplets or sediment at 24–48 hours or 7 days, against a white card and a black card, means the formula is not stable at that load in that base. A cool-room night is a useful extra check — record the temperature, it is a labelled example condition, not a specification. The reeded bottles give you grams per day (weight lost ÷ days, reeds in) and a blind room score on your house scale. If the 22% bottles stay clear, lose weight at a similar rate and score above the 20% control, the extra ₹6.62 a bottle is buying something. If they score the same, the 20% formula is the honest product. Can I increase from 20% to 30%? covers the higher end of the range, and does more oil always mean a stronger diffuser? covers why it often does not.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |

| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml | 8 filled + 2 spare | 1 pack of 10 | ₹1,062.00 |

The decision rule
| If this is true | Do this | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| The oil's IFRA certificate gives a Category 10A limit below 22% | Do not sell at 22%; reformulate at or below the certificate's limit | Nothing until reformulated — see 7957 |
| Capped 22% bottles haze, layer or show droplets | Not stable at 22% in this base | Step down to 17–20%, or test the base the page assigns to the family |
| 22% scores no better than 20% in your room | The extra oil is not buying performance | Price and sell the 20% formula |
| 22% clear and scores clearly better | The load earns its cost | Price at ₹527.11 + your own costs; buy production packs |
| The bottle cost is too high for your price | Look at fill, reeds and oil choice before load | Recost — 7983 works back from the selling price |
For a whole-range view rather than one SKU, the most economical fragrance percentage compares loads by cost per day of use, standardising load or optimising each SKU covers different oils at different loads, and what a 100 ml diffuser costs to make in India gives the 100 ml version of this table.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The page tells you that the oil is not the biggest line in this bottle, that a 1 kg pack of this oil saves only ₹3.94 a bottle, and that if 22% does not beat 20% in your room you should sell the cheaper formula.
Diffuser base, reed, bottle, beaker, scale and mixer prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every gram, millilitre, pack count, per-bottle cost and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; ml ↔ g conversions use labelled example densities with a ±5% sensitivity, because no density is published for any CSI base or oil.
Bottle counts per arm, rest and hold checkpoints, weighing schedules, room-scoring scales, filling-loss allowances and pass lines are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none is published for reed diffusers. The 110 ml fill, the 1.00 g/ml density, the 7 reeds, the 3% batch allowance and the eight-bottle check are labelled examples you replace with your own. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)). Reader's figures: 22% load, 120 ml bottle. Labelled examples: 110 ml fill (100 and 120 ml shown), density 1.00 g/ml with ±5%, 7 reeds per bottle, 3% batch allowance, eight filled bottles in the check with a 7-day hold. Bottle cost = pack of 10 ÷ 10; reeds at the 50-and-up rate unless stated. What CSI's diffuser-base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base is a crystal-clear "Professional Reed & Car Diffuser Base" with a 10–30% fragrance range and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling. Pure Performance — neutral, for all families, 20% recommended, typical 75% base + 25% fragrance, example 75 ml + 25 ml for 100 ml at 25%; Longevity — oriental, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand, avoid light florals, citrus and aquatics, "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases"; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand. CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ (₹1,499.00) is out of stock. Reed page: length 20.3 cm and "6–8 reeds" for a standard 50–100 ml bottle; reed diameter not published. Gold bottle: neck diameter, fill line and any reducer not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base, no density or IFRA percentage for any fragrance oil, and no diffuser throw, consumption or longevity data for any base, oil or reed. Every density on this page is a labelled example, every load above the page range is excluded, and every pass line is the reader's labelled house standard. IFRA: reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A in current IFRA amendments as commonly summarised by suppliers' IFRA guides — confirm against the category descriptions on your oil's certificate; the lower of the base page's 30% and the certificate's limit applies.
