Oud and Leather-Style Fragrance Oils for Masculine Candles

Five kinds of oud, and what leather means in wax

Oud (agarwood) is, in our judgement, among the most prestigious notes in masculine and unisex perfumery across India and the Gulf, and a note many candle brands borrow. In fragrance oils it almost never appears alone: it is framed by something that makes it wearable, and that frame decides what the candle smells like. Plain woods (cedar, sandalwood, vetiver and the woody oud that bridges into them) are sorted in Woody Masculine Fragrance Oils for Candle Making. Here we deal with oud as a style, with smoke, and with leather.

Woody oud — the dry entry point

Oud framed by other woods and patchouli, with little sweetness. CSI's Woody Oud Fragrance Oil is "citrus and spice top notes opening into rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk", with a stated load of 6–10% for candles. It is the least expensive oud per gram and the natural bridge between a woody range and an oud range.

Sweet or gourmand oud — the crowd-pleaser

Oud softened with vanilla, amber and warm spice. It reads rich rather than challenging, which in our judgement makes it the most approachable oud for people who think they do not like oud. CSI's version is Dark Vanilla Oud: "opening with vanilla and spicy cardamom, deepening into exotic oud and deep amber, and settling into warm musk and woody cedar".

Rose-saffron oud — the polished one

A structure widely associated with modern Middle Eastern-style perfumery: saffron and rose around oud, over sandalwood and ambergris. It reads refined and a little formal. CSI has one: White Royal Oud, with a stated candle load. Its nearest relative in the fine-perfume range, Royal Oud Fragrance Oil, is a rose oud without saffron: its page lists bergamot, pink pepper, oud, rose, cedarwood, sandalwood, ambergris and musk, and states no candle load.

Smoky bakhoor — the incense end

Bakhoor is the tradition of scenting a home with smouldering resin-soaked wood chips. Fragrance oils in this style put incense, resin and smoke around oud. CSI has three in its bakhoor-style set (Sultan's Smoke, Midnight Bakhoor Royale, Smoked Rose Royale) plus Sacred Sandal Ember, which puts incense smoke around sandalwood. The Sultan's Smoke page says it is "inspired by traditional Middle Eastern bakhoor": a style, not a brand. None of these pages states a candle load.

Amber oud — the opulent top tier

Oud buried in resins, spice and golden amber, the heaviest and most expensive oud style. Amber Oud Royal "opens with rich resins and spices, unfolds into smoky oud and lush florals, and lingers with golden amber, creamy sandalwood, and dark musk". Lavender Oud is a lighter, aromatic cousin (lavender, bergamot, clary sage over oud). Both sit in the fine-perfume collection and state no candle load.

Leather — suede, not saddle

Leather in perfumery runs from soft suede (powdery, floral, a little sweet) to hard birch-tar leather (smoky, like a new saddle or boots). CSI's only leather-style oil is the soft kind: its page describes "warm, aromatic cardamom", "a supple suede-leather heart softened by jasmine sambac and powdery violet" and a dry-down of "patchouli, amber, and moss". No CSI oil is listed as a birch-tar or smoky leather on 24 September 2026 (one perfume-grade inspired listing has a smoky birch heart, but its page presents it as a fruity chypre, not a leather). If your customers mean saddle and smoke when they say leather, the nearest you can get is a smoky bakhoor oil, and that is a substitute, not a leather.

Every CSI oud by price tier

Three things decide the tier: per-gram price, whether the page states a candle load, and which sizes you can actually buy today. One more oud product sits in the fine-perfume collection: Pure Hindi Oud Oil 1 g at ₹7,000.00. It is sold by the gram as an oud oil, not as a candle fragrance oil, so it is left out of this table and the tiers.

Three pricing facts to act on

1. Lavender Oud's 500 g is dearer per gram than its 100 g and 1 kg. The 500 g is ₹6,200.00 (₹12.40/g); the 100 g is ₹1,200.00 (₹12.00/g), so five 100 g packs cost ₹6,000.00, ₹200.00 less than one 500 g. The 500 g is 3.3% dearer per gram.

2. The bakhoor-style trio is priced almost flat. Sultan's Smoke, Midnight Bakhoor Royale and Smoked Rose Royale are ₹799.00 for 100 g, ₹3,999.00 for 500 g and ₹7,999.00 for 1 kg: ₹7.99 to ₹8.00 per gram whichever you buy. There is no bulk saving, so buy the size you will use.

3. Royal Oud has no small size in stock. Its 100 g is out of stock on 24 September 2026, so the smallest buy is 500 g at ₹3,300.00. The 1 kg is 3.0% cheaper per gram than that. If you want to test it before committing, ask on WhatsApp when the 100 g returns, and test White Royal Oud meanwhile.

Ranked by what we can show: whether a candle load is stated, which sizes are in stock, per-gram price and how clearly the stated notes express each facet. Leather: the honest reality

We would rather you knew this before you print labels. CSI's leather coverage is a single perfume-grade listing, and only its smallest size is in stock. At 8% in a 150 g candle, 50 g makes four candles; a proper three-load test (6%, 8%, 10%) uses 36 g and leaves one retest candle. That is enough to decide whether you like it. It is not enough to launch a leather candle, and there is no second leather oil to fall back on.

What to do if you need leather at scale

First, ask on WhatsApp when the 100 g and 1 kg are expected back; do not assume a date. Second, if you launch before then, launch leather as a numbered limited edition of a few candles rather than a core scent, so a stock gap does not become a customer complaint. Third, if the brief is really "dark, smoky, masculine" rather than "leather" specifically, test Midnight Bakhoor Royale or Sultan's Smoke instead: smoky, resinous and in stock at 100 g to 1 kg. They are not leather, and your label should not call them leather.

Smoky bakhoor oils compared

Four CSI oils put smoke and incense at the centre. They are priced almost identically, none states a candle load, and they differ in what the smoke is wrapped around.

Testing oud without buying 500 g blind

Most ouds here are sold from 100 g or larger, and several state no candle load, so the test has to be economical and has to work inside the wax's own ceiling. Two whole candles, worked example

Dark Vanilla Oud at 8% in a 150 g candle: 12 g of oil at the 1 kg price (₹68.29) + 138 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at the 10 kg price (₹87.91, i.e. ₹0.64 per gram) + one Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) from the pack of 20 (₹94.40) + one Thin (C1) Eco Candle Wick (₹5.90) = ₹256.50. The same candle with the leather-style oil at the 50 g price is ₹348.29, ₹91.79 more. Both figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
