Commercial Fragrance · Strong Jar Candles
Makers search for the strongest oil and then pour it into a jar with the wrong wick, judge it after two days and burn it in a hall. The oil is one of six things that decide how strong a jar candle smells. This page covers all six, names the oils worth testing first, and prices a fair test.
₹1,504.26
a four-oil, three-load screening kit: 12 mini jars, wax, wicks and four 15 g testers · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oil is strongest for jar candles? We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so we will not rank them. Oils worth testing first include Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cinnamon, Blue Ocean and Dark Vanilla, each for a stated reason. Your wax, wick, jar and cure decide the result. See the candidates.

How do I make my jar candle smell stronger? Check in this order: a full melt pool (wick), a proper cure, the load within your wax's ceiling, then the oil. Most weak jars are a wick or cure problem, not an oil problem.

What fragrance load gives the strongest jar candle? Not the highest. Test 6%, 8% and 10% side by side. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%. Past the point the candle can burn cleanly, extra oil is wasted and can seep.

How do I test oils for throw? Screen four oils at three loads in 50 g mini jars (illustrative fill) — 12 g of oil per oil, so one 15 g tester each — then confirm the best two in your sales jar. The screening kit costs ₹1,504.26. See the protocol.
The short answer
Honest position: No measured hot-throw or cold-throw data exists for any individual CSI oil. Candidates are named as worth testing, with the reason, never as ranked winners.
What drives strength: Load within the wax's ceiling · a full melt pool · cure time · oil formulation · room size and airflow · jar opening.
Screening kit: Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cinnamon, Blue Ocean, Dark Vanilla 15 g (₹397.86) + 15 mini jars ₹389.40 + 1 kg Chunks ₹599.00 + 20 Eco wicks ₹118.00 = ₹1,504.26.
Same oil, same load, three wicks — why the melt pool decides how strong a jar candle smells Too small a wick Narrow pool, tunnel down the centre Little scent released Right wick Full pool reaches the glass Most scent released Too large a wick Fast, hot, may soot Scent burnt off fast Dark = liquid wax pool. Wick sizes by jar diameter are not published — the burn test finds the right one.
A jar candle releases scent from its liquid pool. A wick too small for the jar leaves a narrow pool and a tunnel, and even a strong oil smells weak; a wick too large burns hot and fast. The right wick is found by burn test in your own jar — CSI does not publish wick sizes by diameter, and neither should anyone who has not tested your jar.
Straight answer
Which fragrance oils make the strongest scented jar candles?
No oil is strong in every jar, and we have not published throw measurements for any oil, so this page does not rank them. What makes a jar candle fill a room is a chain: the load within your wax's ceiling (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%), a full melt pool from the right wick, a proper cure, the oil's own formulation, the room and the jar opening. Break any link and the best oil smells weak. For the oil link, test candidates side by side. Good first candidates are Eucalyptus Spearmint (a family makers commonly choose for projection, and the cheapest 15 g at ₹68.44), Cinnamon (warm spice for festive rooms), Blue Ocean and Dark Vanilla (both near the top of the best-selling sort). Screen all four at 6%, 8% and 10% in 50 g mini jars — one 15 g tester per oil covers it — for a kit costing ₹1,504.26, then confirm the best two in the jar you sell.
One line: fix the wick and the cure first; then let a fair test, not a label, tell you which oil is strong.
Four oils worth screening first, each at 15 g: Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹68.44, Cinnamon ₹106.20, Blue Ocean ₹93.22 and Dark Vanilla ₹130.00. That is ₹397.86, and each bottle covers three 50 g test jars at 6%, 8% and 10% (12 g) with 3 g to spare.

What makes a jar candle strong

"Strong oil" is a shortcut for a result that six things produce together. Only one of them is in the bottle.

When a customer says a candle is strong, they mean they could smell it across the room while it burned, and often that they could smell it through the lid in the shop. Those are hot throw and cold throw. Both depend on the whole candle. The table sets out the six drivers, what each does, and what you control. It is general candle-making practice, not measured CSI data.

General candle-making practice · not measured data for any individual oil
The six drivers of scent strength in a jar
Driver What it does What you control How to check it
Load within the wax's ceiling More oil in the wax, up to the point the wax can hold and release it Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%; test 6%, 8%, 10% Oily surface or seepage means past what the candle can use
Full melt pool Scent leaves the liquid wax; a wider pool releases more Wick choice for your jar diameter — set by burn test Pool should reach the glass on a full-length burn
Cure time Oil and wax settle together after pouring A fixed cure period before any judging Never compare candles of different ages
Oil formulation Some profiles are built to project, some to sit close Which oil you test Side-by-side scoring, same room, same day
Room and airflow A large or draughty room dilutes any candle Where you test and where you tell customers to burn it Test in a closed room of a known size
Jar shape A narrow opening limits how much scent escapes the jar Which container you choose Compare the same oil in two jars

Notice how many of those are about the candle rather than the oil. A maker who changes oil five times without touching the wick or the cure is testing the same broken candle five times. The order in which to fix things is roughly the order of the table, bottom three aside: get the load into a sensible range, get the pool to the glass, cure properly, and only then compare oils.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easy sale would be to label a handful of our oils "strongest" and let you buy them. We have not measured throw for any oil, and a strength label with no test behind it would send you chasing the wrong fix. The honest answer is a short list of oils worth testing, the reason each is on it, and a test you can run yourself for ₹1,504.26.

The melt pool comes before the oil

Scent leaves a container candle from its pool of liquid wax. A wider pool at the right temperature releases more. That is why the wick matters so much in a jar: a wick too small for the diameter makes a narrow pool that tunnels down the centre, leaves a wall of unmelted wax, and wastes both oil and customer goodwill. A wick too large makes a hot, fast pool that can soot and burns through the candle quickly.

CSI sells Eco Candle Wicks in Thin C1 (₹5.90 each) and Thick C2 (₹9.44 each), Cotton Braided Wicks at ₹12.00 each and Performance Wooden Wicks from ₹590.00 for 10. Wick sizes are not published by jar diameter, and we will not invent them. Pour a test jar with each candidate wick, burn it for a full session, and look at the pool: it should reach, or nearly reach, the glass without soot or a tall, flickering flame. That test is worth more than any chart.

200 g jar · Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3.54/g and Dark Vanilla ₹7.90/g at the 100 g rate
Load, oil and what the wax allows
Load Oil in 200 g Eucalyptus Spearmint Dark Vanilla Chunks (up to 13%) CSI 464 (up to 10%)
6% 12 g ₹42.48 ₹94.80 Yes Yes
8% 16 g ₹56.64 ₹126.40 Yes Yes
10% 20 g ₹70.80 ₹158.00 Yes Yes
12% 24 g ₹84.96 ₹189.60 Yes No — above 10%
13% 26 g ₹92.04 ₹205.40 Yes No — above 10%

Raising the load from 8% to 12% adds 8 g of oil to a 200 g jar: ₹28.32 with Eucalyptus Spearmint and ₹63.20 with Dark Vanilla. If the candle was weak because of a narrow pool, that extra oil does very little. If the pool is full and the candle still sits quietly at 8%, the higher load is worth a test. The ceiling is the wax maker's stated maximum — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464 — and it is a limit, not a target. For coconut soy waxes, strong oils for coconut soy candles covers the same question.

One variable per test
If you change the oil and the wick in the same test, you cannot tell which change worked. Fix the wick first using one oil, then keep that wick for the oil comparison. Write the wick, load, pour temperature, pour date and cure length on the base of every test jar.

Oils worth testing first

These are candidates, not champions. Each is on the list for a reason you can check, and none has a throw score, because none has been measured.

The list mixes families on purpose. A fair test shows you which profile carries best in your wax and your customers' rooms, and that is often not the one you expected. The reasons given are the reasons to test, drawn from the family, the position in the collection's best-selling sort on the pull date, and the price tier.

Smallest in-stock size, CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · screen = 12 g per oil (6%, 8%, 10% in 50 g jars)
Six candidates and why each is worth a test
Oil Family Why test it first Smallest in-stock size Oil cost of the screen
Eucalyptus Spearmint Mint and eucalyptus A family makers commonly choose for projection; cheapest 15 g in the collection; near the top of the best-selling sort 15 g · ₹68.44 ₹54.75
Cinnamon Warm spice Spice profiles are commonly chosen for festive rooms; a 10.0% saving at 1 kg if it passes 15 g · ₹106.20 ₹84.96
Blue Ocean Fresh aquatic Near the top of the best-selling sort; a fresh profile for larger living spaces 15 g · ₹93.22 ₹74.58
Dark Vanilla Gourmand Near the top of the best-selling sort; tests whether a sweet base carries in your room 15 g · ₹130.00 ₹104.00
Lemongrass and Lime Citrus-green Bright top notes; tells you how a citrus holds up after cure 15 g · ₹116.52 ₹93.22
Mahogany Teakwood (BBW Inspired) Woody, inspired-by A popular woody profile; starts at 50 g, so the screen costs more 50 g · ₹440.00 ₹105.60

Mahogany Teakwood is on the list because a woody profile belongs in any test, but it starts at 50 g (₹440.00), so screening it costs more than the others and leaves 38 g over. If budget is tight, screen the four oils with a 15 g size first and add a woody oil in a second round; Sandalwood at ₹93.22 for 15 g is the lower-cost woody option. Inspired-by oils such as Mahogany Teakwood are listed under the store's own names in the BBW Inspired collection.

A fair two-stage test

Testing in full-size jars is slow and expensive. Screening in small jars first, then confirming the winners at full size, gets you a fair answer for far less oil. The Mini Glass Jars are ₹129.80 for 5; their fill weight is not published, so this protocol uses an illustrative 50 g fill. Weigh yours and adjust the grams.

1
Fix the wick with one oilPour two or three mini jars with the same oil at 8% and different wicks. Burn them and keep the wick that gives a full pool without soot. That wick stays fixed for the whole screen.
2
Screen four oils at three loadsPour each oil at 6%, 8% and 10%: 3 g, 4 g and 5 g of oil in 50 g jars, 12 g per oil. Twelve jars, one wax, one wick. Label every base.
3
Cure all twelve togetherPour on the same day and cure for the same fixed period before judging. Do not test any jar early.
4
Score in one room, one sessionBurn in a closed room of a known size. Score each jar on the sheet below, near and far, at one hour and at three hours. Have a second person score blind if you can.
5
Confirm the best two at full sizePour the top two oils at their best load in the jar you sell, for example two White Matte jars each (16 g of oil per 200 g jar at 8%). A 50 g of each covers both jars with 18 g to spare. The confirmation costs ₹976.40 if the winners are Eucalyptus Spearmint and Dark Vanilla.
6
Re-test when anything changesA new wax, jar, wick or supplier batch means a new test. A result is only true for the candle it was measured on.

If a different wick type suits your jar better, swap it in; the point is that the wick is fixed across the oil comparison. Buying three 5-packs of mini jars (₹389.40 for 15) is cheaper for this test than the 25-pack at ₹634.25. The Thin C1 20-pack is ₹118.00, which matches ₹5.90 a wick. For a soy-only version of this test, see which oils give the best hot throw in soy wax.

The test that proves nothing. A maker pours four oils, each in a different jar from a different batch of wax, lights them on different evenings and picks the one that "seemed strongest". Every variable moved at once, so the result says nothing about the oil. Same wax, same wick, same jar, same cure, same room, same session — or it is not a test.
Festive jars need their scent settled before Diwali on 8 November 2026. If you want to screen oils in October and produce in time, order the test kit now and ask us on WhatsApp for a quote on the winners in 500 g or 1 kg, with MSDS and IFRA documentation.

Room, jar and the customer's promise

Strength is also a promise you make on the label. A 50 g mini jar will not fill a large living room, whatever oil is in it, and a customer who expects it to will be disappointed. Match the candle to the room: small jars and tins for bathrooms, desks and bedrooms; 200 g jars for living rooms; wide multi-wick jars for large, open spaces. Large three-wick jars covers the wide format, including why no three-wick jar is currently listed at CSI.

The jar opening matters too. A narrow-mouthed jar can hold scent in, while an open tin or tumbler lets it out. If you are choosing between two containers for a strong-scented range, pour the same oil at the same load in both and score them in the same session. The Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g fill, ₹360.00 for 12) and the Salsa jar (₹200.60 for 5) are an easy pair to compare.

Finally, describe strength honestly. "Fills a small room" is a promise you can test and keep; "strongest candle ever" is not. The customers who reorder are the ones whose candle did what the label said. For the family shortlist, see the container candle hub; for a luxury range where scent character matters as much as strength, see premium oils for luxury jar candles.

The CSI principle
Strength is a property of the candle, not the bottle.
The same oil can be weak in one jar and bold in another. Fix the wick, cure and load, then compare oils fairly. The oil that wins that test in your jar is your strong oil — whatever anyone else's list says.

Once you have a winner, the other posts in this cluster take it into production. Buying oils for jar candle making prices a pilot order; a luxury container collection shows how strong and quiet scents balance in a range; I'm Making Large Three-Wick Candles — Do I Need Different Fragrance Oils Than I Use in Smaller Jars? covers whether big candles need different oils; and where to buy professional oils for jar candles covers the paperwork a buyer will ask for.

Before you change the oil, look at the pool. A tunnel is not a fragrance problem.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We do not publish hot-throw or cold-throw measurements for any oil, and this page does not pretend otherwise. The oils named are candidates to test, each with a checkable reason, and the method is one you can run on any supplier's oils.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Container prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026 and wick prices on 25 September 2026. Every kit total and per-jar figure is arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals. "Near the top of the best-selling sort" refers to the collection's best-selling sort order on the pull date and is not a sales or performance figure.

The six drivers of scent strength are general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements. The 50 g mini-jar fill is illustrative. Load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax maker's stated maximums. Wick sizes are not published by jar diameter; set them by burn test. For help setting up a test, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What is the strongest smelling fragrance oil for candles?
There is no measured answer for CSI's oils; we have not published throw measurements. Test candidates side by side in your own jar and wax. Eucalyptus Spearmint, Cinnamon, Blue Ocean and Dark Vanilla are good first candidates for the reasons given on this page.
Why does my jar candle not smell when burning?
Most often the melt pool is too narrow (wick too small for the jar), the candle was not cured long enough, or the load is low. Check those before changing the oil. A candle burned in a large, draughty room will also seem weak.
Does more fragrance oil make a candle stronger?
Only up to a point. Stay within your wax's stated maximum — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464 — and test 6%, 8% and 10% side by side. Extra oil the candle cannot burn off is wasted and can seep.
How long should I cure a jar candle before testing throw?
Use one fixed cure period for every test and never compare candles of different ages. Your wax's product page or CSI on WhatsApp can advise on the wax you use. Judging a candle the day after pouring is the most common testing mistake.
Which wick gives the best hot throw in a jar?
The one that gives a full melt pool in your jar without soot. CSI does not publish wick sizes by jar diameter, so pour test jars with two or three wicks, burn them, and keep the best. Eco Thin C1 wicks cost ₹5.90 each.
Is cold throw the same as hot throw?
No. Cold throw is how the candle smells unlit; hot throw is how it fills a room while burning. A candle can be strong in one and quiet in the other, so score both on the sheet.
