Quick answers — read this first
What does an 8% fragrance load mean? Eight grams of oil in every 100 g of finished candle — so 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax in a 200 g candle, 9.6 g and 110.4 g in a 120 g jar, 5.6 g and 64.4 g in a 70 g votive. Measured against the wax it is 86.96 g of oil per kilogram.

Why is 8% the usual default? Because it is the load every published band agrees on. It is the bottom of the stated range on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (8% to 13%), comfortably inside CSI 464's "Up to 10%" and CSI 468's "Up to 13%", and inside every candle range CSI's oil pages state — 6-10%, 7-10%, 6-9% and 8-10% all contain it.

What does it cost? ₹45.31 to ₹142.38 of oil in a 200 g candle across the eight oils costed here, and ₹13,867.36 to ₹23,574.56 of materials per hundred candles poured in CSI 464.

Where is 8% the wrong number? On paraffin: 14 CSI oil pages state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax", which puts 8% above their stated figure. And on Chunks, 8% is the floor of the range, not its recommendation — that page says "10% Recommended".
The short answer
Treat 8% as a constant, not an opinion: 16 g into 184 g for a 200 g candle, weighed on a scale and written on a card. A default only earns its keep if every batch is dosed identically.
Buy in the right packs: a hundred 200 g candles need 1.6 kg of oil and 18.4 kg of wax, or 1,664 g and 19,136 g with a 4% planning allowance. One 1 kg bottle plus a 500 g and a 100 g covers it.
Change one variable at a time: with the load fixed at 8%, wick size, cure length, vessel and oil choice become testable. Makers who move the load and the wick together never learn which one worked.

At 8% the oil requirement is exactly 8% of the finished weight of the run, so it scales in a straight line: 16 g per 200 g candle, 1.6 kg per hundred, 8 kg per five hundred. Bottles do not scale so neatly — CSI lists oils up to 1 kg, so past four bottles the conversation moves to the bulk line.

What is an 8% fragrance load, and why does almost every recipe start there?
An 8% fragrance load is eight grams of oil in every hundred grams of finished candle: 16 g of oil with 184 g of wax in a 200 g candle, 12 g with 138 g in a 150 g jar, 5.6 g with 64.4 g in a votive. Against the wax alone it is 86.96 g per kilogram, using oil = wax × 8 ÷ 92 — the two bases are separated in how to calculate fragrance load for candles. It is the default because it is the one figure nothing in the CSI range argues with. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight", so 8% is its published floor; CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and CSI 468 "Up to 13%", so 8% sits inside both with room to spare; and every candle range printed on CSI's oil pages — "6-10%", "7-10% (start at 7%)", "6-9%", "8-10%" — contains it. At scale that means 1.6 kg of oil and 18.4 kg of wax per hundred 200 g candles, which costs between ₹13,867.36 and ₹23,574.56 in materials depending on the oil. The one place 8% does not belong is paraffin, where 14 oil pages state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax". Fix it, document it, and then change one thing at a time.
One line: 8% is 16 g in a 200 g candle and 1.6 kg per hundred, it is inside every band CSI publishes for soy, and its real value is that it holds still while you test everything else.
Pouring a hundred candles at 8%? That is 18.4 kg of wax and 1.6 kg of oil — two 10 kg bags of CSI 464 at ₹5,074 each, or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 10 kg at ₹5,999, plus a 1 kg bottle, a 500 g and a 100 g of your scent.

16 g, 184 g and the recipe card

A default load is only a default if every person at your bench weighs the same two numbers. Print them.

Load in this series is a share of the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% weighs 200 g and holds 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Some pages phrase the same idea as a share of wax weight — the Chunks page says "8% to 13% of total wax weight" — and the difference is worth knowing once: 8% of 184 g of wax is 14.72 g, which is 7.41% of the finished candle. Neither convention is wrong. Mixing them inside one batch is.

The mistake: dosing 8% against the jar's capacity in millilitres. Most CSI jars state a fill in grams or millilitres, and the two are not interchangeable. If a jar states 200 ml, you weigh 16 g of oil because "8% of 200", and the jar then takes only 159 g of wax up to your fill line, the candle weighs 175 g and carries a 9.1% load you did not choose. Fill one jar with wax to your intended line, weigh it, and build the recipe from that number. Then the card reads "184 g + 16 g" and nobody has to think again.
Write the card in grams, per vessel, with the wick on it
A usable recipe card names five things: wax and grams, oil and grams, the add temperature from the wax page, the wick size, and the cure date. For a 120 g jar in CSI 464 at 8% that is "110.4 g CSI 464, 9.6 g oil, add at 80–90°C, Thin C1 Eco wick, burn on day 14". Every number on that card is one you can audit later when a batch behaves differently.

Why every published band contains 8%

The reason 8% became the industry's habit is not folklore — it is arithmetic on the published figures. CSI's waxes and oils state loads in several different phrasings, and 8% is the only one of the three common loads that falls inside all of the soy and container bands at once. Six per cent sits below the Chunks range; ten per cent sits exactly on CSI 464's stated ceiling. Eight is the only one of the three with headroom left on every wax that publishes a figure.

Two things follow. First, 8% is a defensible default rather than a compromise: on every CSI container wax that publishes a figure, an 8% candle is inside the range the wax was characterised in, which means the wax maker's guidance still applies to your batch. Second, the exceptions are specific and knowable — paraffin, and the occasional oil with a narrower band. Check the two pages, take the lower ceiling, and you are done. These are formulation figures, not regulatory limits, and nothing here recommends going above the lower of the two.

8% is a floor on one wax and a mid-point on another
Worth holding in mind when a recipe travels. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 8% is the bottom of the stated range and the page separately recommends 10%; on CSI 464 it is two points below the maximum. The same 16 g therefore means different things about headroom in the two waxes — which is why a wax swap is a reason to re-test, even when the load has not changed.

8% at production scale

The number that matters on order day is not 8%. It is how many kilograms of oil 8% turns into.

Because the load is a share of the finished weight, a batch's oil requirement is simply total finished weight × 0.08. A hundred 200 g candles is 20 kg of finished candle: 1.6 kg of oil and 18.4 kg of wax. The table adds the planning allowance and the packs that cover it, and it is the sheet to work from before you message anyone about pricing.

Worked out above: oil = candles × candle weight × 0.08; wax = candles × candle weight × 0.92. For 100 × 200 g: 100 × 16 g = 1,600 g of oil and 100 × 184 g = 18,400 g of wax. The allowance column is × 1.04. Wax packs: CSI 464 is listed at 500 g ₹260, 1 kg ₹507.40, 5 kg ₹2,537 and 10 kg ₹5,074 — a flat ₹507.40 a kilogram at every size, so 19.14 kg is two 10 kg bags with wax to spare. CSI does not list a fragrance pack above 1 kg, and no 25 kg soy pack is listed either, so larger runs are combinations of listed packs or a quote on the bulk line.

The honest part of that table is the last column. At a hundred candles you are buying three bottles instead of one, and on some oils the combination costs a little more than the same weight bought as one kilogram: 1.6 kg of Citrus Lemon as 1 kg + 500 g + 100 g is ₹4,552 against ₹4,531.20 at the flat kilogram rate — ₹20.80 of difference. On Apple Cinnamon the listed price per kilogram is identical at 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg, so the combination costs exactly ₹7,589.76 either way. Check the per-kilogram column before assuming the big bottle is cheaper.

The mistake: ordering oil for the wax weight instead of the candle weight. A maker planning a hundred 200 g candles sometimes orders 8% of 20 kg of wax — 1.6 kg — and then pours 20 kg of wax plus 1.6 kg of oil, producing 21.6 kg of candle and 108 candles at a 7.41% load. Nothing breaks, but the batch is no longer the recipe on the card and the candle count is wrong on the invoice. Decide the finished weight first, then split it 92:8.

What 8% costs across the price range

At a fixed load, the only variable left in your material cost is which oil you chose — and CSI's range spans more than a threefold spread at 1 kg pricing. The table prices the same 16 g in eight oils, from the cheapest kilogram in the candle range to one of the dearest, then adds the wax to give a materials cost per hundred candles in CSI 464.

Read the gap between the first and last rows: at the same load, in the same jar, with the same wick, the oil choice moves your materials cost by ₹9,707.20 per hundred candles. That is far more than any load decision available to you — the 8%-to-10% step on these oils is worth a quarter of the oil line, as costed in candle fragrance oils for an 8–10% fragrance load. Fixing the load and choosing the oil carefully is the more powerful pair of decisions.

Two oils to run your 8% default on

An 8% house load wants oils whose pages actually publish a candle figure, so that your default is inside somebody's stated range rather than only inside your own habit. Both of these do, and they sit either side of the middle of the price range.

Useful in this guide for what its page does not allow. It states "Candle usage rate 6-9% of total wax weight" — a narrower band than most, which means 8% is available and 10% is not. Locking 8% as a house default

A default is worth having because it turns a variable into a constant. That only works if the 8% in your third batch is the same 8% as in your first, which takes a scale, a log and one rule. Five steps, run once per scent.

Fix the finished weight of each vesselFill one jar to your intended line with wax only, weigh it, and record that as the vessel's finished weight. Split it 92:8 and write both grams on the card. A Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354 is the whole equipment requirement.

Prove repeatability over three batches before you call it a defaultPour three batches of the same recipe on three different days. Weigh a finished candle from each: if they differ by more than a gram or two, your dosing or your fill line is drifting, not your oil. Three identical batches are what makes the next test meaningful.

Settle the wick at 8%, then leave both aloneBurn-test wick sizes with the load held at 8% until one reaches the glass without sooting or mushrooming. From that point the pair — 8% and that wick — is your baseline, and every future question is asked against it. Change one variable per test, and cure before judgingNew oil, new vessel, new wax, new load — one at a time, with 14 days of cure before scoring. The whole value of a default is that the answer to "what changed?" is always exactly one thing. Why your candle needs a 14-day cure explains why the fortnight is not optional.
The mistake: raising the load because a batch disappointed. When an 8% candle reads weak, the load is the least likely cause and the most expensive fix. Cure length, wick size, pool coverage and the room all move throw further than two percentage points do, and the load change costs money on every candle afterwards. Work through the cheaper levers first — CSI sets them out in how to make candles smell strong without exceeding the safe fragrance load — and if you do decide to move, move once and test it properly against 8% rather than replacing your default on a hunch.
The CSI principle
A default load is not a claim that 8% is best. It is a decision to stop varying one thing so you can find out what else matters.
Fix it at 8%, write it on the card, and spend the next three months learning your wick, your cure and your oils. The maker who changes the load every batch has a year of data that proves nothing.

There is a fifth case that is not about the wax at all: a much larger vessel. A 300 g two-wick or a 500 g three-wick opens a far bigger pool than a 200 g jar, and the same 8% may read differently in it. That is a vessel question rather than a load question, and the honest answer is to re-run your comparison in the bigger jar rather than assume the percentage carries across. Why is 8% the standard fragrance load for candles?
Because it is the one figure every published band contains. It is the floor of the stated range on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (8% to 13%), sits two points under CSI 464's stated "Up to 10%" and five under CSI 468's "Up to 13%", and falls inside the 6-10%, 7-10%, 6-9% and 8-10% candle ranges printed on CSI's oil pages. That makes it defensible on paper as well as convenient in practice.
Is 8% enough for a candle that smells strong?
Often, yes — but load is not the main lever. Cure length, wick size and pool coverage move perceived throw more than two percentage points do, and a poorly wicked 10% candle will read weaker than a well-wicked 8% one. Give soy containers 14 to 21 days, confirm the wick reaches the glass, and judge in a closed room after stepping out and returning. Then, if you still want more, test 10% properly rather than adopting it.
How much fragrance oil do I order for 500 candles at 8%?
For 500 × 200 g candles, 8 kg of oil and 92 kg of wax — 8,320 g and 95.68 kg with a 4% planning allowance. CSI lists fragrance oils up to 1 kg, so that is eight bottles of one scent, and the sensible route for a run that size is a quote on the bulk line. CSI 464 and Chunks are listed to 10 kg, so 96 kg is ten bags. Nothing above those pack sizes is published, and no quote exists until you ask.
Which CSI waxes and oils allow an 8% load?
All three container waxes that publish a figure: CSI 464 "Up to 10%", CSI 468 "Up to 13%" and Chunks "8% to 13%". On the oil side, the 20 pages stating "6-10%", the 26 stating "7-10% (start at 7%)", the 14 stating "Up to 10% for soy wax" and narrower cases such as Fresh Strawberries at "6-9%" all include 8%. The exception is the paraffin line: 14 pages state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax".
Is 8% too much fragrance oil for paraffin candles?
By the figures CSI's oil pages publish, yes. Fourteen pages state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" alongside "Up to 10% for soy wax", and Citrus Lemon states "6-8% for paraffin wax". CSI's Semi Refined Paraffin Wax page states a melting point of 80–90°C but no load, so the oil page is the figure to follow. Work to the lower of the two published numbers, always.
My 8% candle smells weak — should I move to 10%?
Not first. Check the cure (14 days minimum for soy), then the wick — a flame that never opens a full pool cannot release what is in the wax — then the room size against the vessel. If all three are sound and you still want more, test it: three jars at 8% and three at 10%, cured together and scored blind, before you change the recipe card. On CSI 464, 10% is the stated ceiling rather than a step on the way up.
