What Jar Safety Tests Should a Small Candle Brand Complete Before Buying and Selling a New Container Commercially?
Aktie
How many jars and how long? Worked example: 20 jars inspected, 3 water-filled, 10 poured (3 burn-downs, 3 reserves, 2 couriered, 1 unlit control, 1 retained sample), in about four weeks including cure. Diwali, 8 November 2026, is 43 days away: tight but possible if you start now.
What does it cost? With the Clear 150 g jar and CSI 464: ₹4,625.20 including thermometer, scale and safety stickers; ₹3,917.20 if you already own the tools. Spread over your first 100 candles, ₹46.25 each.
Does a "safe for hot pour" listing let me skip it? No. Only seven CSI listings state a figure ("hot-pour up to 85°C"), it is page wording rather than test data, and CSI publishes no burn-down or breakage data. The programme is how you get your own evidence.
The eight tests, what each proves, and the pass line
This is the capstone of the glass-safety cluster: the minimum list, with the detailed method for each test in its own guide. The counts are our judgement of a sensible minimum for a small brand, not a standard; a brand selling thousands of units, or importing, should do more (the import approval guide).
| Test | What it proves | Minimum | Pass line | Method |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Paper check | What is claimed, and what is not | Listing wording dated; written supplier answers | Every claim you rely on is quoted and dated; unanswered questions are noted as unknown | Suitability hub, supplier claims |
| 2. Incoming inspection | No flawed glass enters production | Every jar | No chip, crack, sharp edge, deep scratch or open bubble | Reject policy |
| 3. Measurement and fill | Inside diameter, fill line, net quantity | 3 jars water-filled; inside diameter at 2 to 3 heights | Fill weight weighed, not assumed; headspace clears the lid | Fill-weight hub, external vs internal diameter |
| 4. Pour-and-cool | The jar survives your production pour | 10 jars, logged | No cracks; pour inside the lower of the two stated limits | Cooling cracks |
| 5. Burn-downs | The whole candle life, final third included | 3 candles to the stop line, 3 in reserve | Full pool without a flame reaching the glass; no crack; no soot build-up that points to an oversized flame; stops cleanly at about 1 cm | Pre-order heat test, final third |
| 6. Finish (if coated) | Frost, paint or coating survives repeated heat | Burn-down jars graded against 1 unlit control | No change visible at arm's length, felt or smelled | Frosted-coating test |
| 7. Lid and transit | Lid fits across the batch; candles arrive intact | Lid on all 20 jars; 2 candles couriered | Lids sit flat without catching; clearance above the wick; no chips or cracks on arrival | Lid tolerance, transit packaging |
| 8. Labels and warnings | Customers know how to burn it | Label proof on the retained sample | Warnings present; net quantity checked; no "safe" or "certified" claim | This page |
Three burn-downs is a floor, not a target. One burn-down is an anecdote; two that disagree leave you guessing; three that agree give you a pattern you can defend. If any one fails for a reason that is not the wick or a draught, the jar has not passed, and a reserve burn-down does not overrule it.
Running it in four weeks
The diagram shows the calendar; here is the order of work. It assumes your wick and formula are already chosen for this jar. If they are not, bracket the wick first, and add a week or two.
The container file: what to keep
A small brand does not need a laboratory, but it does need to be able to answer three questions months later: what did we test, on which batch, and what did we see? The container file does that. Keep it as a folder on your phone or laptop, with a printed summary page in the workshop.
| Record | What goes in it | Why it matters later |
|---|---|---|
| Listing snapshot | Screenshot, date, quoted heat, capacity and finish wording | Listings change; you need what it said when you approved it |
| Supplier answers | Written replies on glass type, pour figure, coating, batch | Shows what you were told, and what was never confirmed |
| Batch record | Delivery date, lot or batch if given, carton marks | Links every later problem to a batch |
| Inspection log | Rejects per carton, photos | Separates transit damage from workshop damage |
| Measurements | Inside diameter at 2 to 3 heights, height, rim, fill line, water-fill, weighed fill | Your wick, fill weight and label all rest on these |
| Pour-and-cool log | Jar number, pitcher temperature, surface, airflow, cracks | The baseline if breakage ever starts |
| Burn-down logs | Sessions, pool, flame, soot, glass warmth in the final third, stop line, photos | The evidence behind your approval |
| Finish grades | Scores and photos against the control (coated jars) | Shows the finish was checked, not assumed |
| Lid and transit results | Lid fit across the batch, courier arrival photos | The first place to look when complaints mention lids or breakage |
| Label proof and sign-off | Final label, warnings, net quantity; date and approver | What you actually sold, and who decided |
Add the MSDS and IFRA documentation for your wax and fragrance oil to the same file; CSI provides these on request on WhatsApp. They are not jar documents, but a buyer or a marketplace that asks for one usually asks for the others.
Warnings and labels before the first sale
The last test is the one the customer reads. Your programme earns you the right to sell the candle; your label tells the customer how to burn it. Common candle-safety warnings, in plain words, are:
Three rules for the label itself. First, warnings, not promises: never print that the jar or the candle is "safe", "certified" or "tested to" anything you cannot show, because a listing said so. Second, net quantity: India's Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules govern net-quantity declarations on pre-packaged goods; check the current requirements for your product and sales channel, and treat this as a pointer, not legal advice. Your weighed fill from test 3 is the number to declare against. Third, fit: a warning sticker that peels off a warm jar has not done its job, which is why the programme labels the burn-down candles.
The Candle Care Stickers Roll is titled a "Candle Safety Sticker Roll", but its page does not show the printed wording; ask us for it and compare it with the list above before relying on it alone.
What the programme costs
Worked example for a new Clear 150 g jar, ten 150 g candles at 8% (12 g of oil and 138 g of wax each), CSI 464, Jasmine Fragrance Oil standing in for your oil (its page states "Recommended load up to 10% soy"), and C2 standing in for your approved wick. CSI live pricing, 26 September 2026.
| Item | For | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), pack of 20 | Inspection, measurement, lid fit, 10 pours, replacements | ₹1,888.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 1 kg + 500 g | 10 candles × 138 g = 1,380 g | ₹767.40 |
| Jasmine Fragrance Oil, 100 g + 50 g | 10 candles × 12 g = 120 g | ₹660.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2), 20 | 10 candles plus spares | ₹188.80 |
| Pen Thermometer | Every logged pour | ₹354.00 |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | Water-fills, fills, net quantity, stop line | ₹354.00 |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll, 500 (1 inch) | Warnings on the programme and launch candles | ₹413.00 |
| Programme total | With tools | ₹4,625.20 |
| Programme total | If you already own a checked thermometer and a 1 g scale | ₹3,917.20 |
| Spread over the first 100 candles | Per candle | ₹46.25 |
| Spread over the first 300 candles | Per candle | ₹15.42 |
For scale: the materials for 100 production candles in the same jar come to about ₹22,094.00 (₹220.94 each, at the 10 kg wax and 1 kg oil prices), so the full programme with tools is about 21% of your first hundred candles' materials, and much of it (tools, stickers, spare jars) carries straight into production. Boxes and air-column wrap for the transit test are optional extras here (₹2,236.00 for 50 boxes and a roll) because you will need them at launch anyway. All figures exclude labour, freight and GST.
When to run it again
Approval belongs to a combination, not to a jar. Write these triggers on the sign-off page, and rerun the relevant tests when one happens:
New supplier or a jar that "looks the same": the whole programme; near-identical jars differ in inside diameter, base thickness and glass (switching jar suppliers). New batch from the same supplier: inspection and measurement on every batch; a pour-and-cool log on the first production run; burn-downs if the measurements have moved (batch-to-batch variation). New wick, wax, fragrance oil or load: burn-downs and the final third (what to retest when a formula changes). New finish or colour of the "same" jar: the finish test and burn-downs. New lid or packaging: lid fit and transit. A pattern of complaints or breakage: stop, and diagnose before you sell more (the production-breakage split test).
What the programme uses
Ranked by how much of the programme each one carries: the jar under test, the warnings every candle ships with, the two measuring tools, then the wax and wick of your final formula. Prices and stock verified 26 September 2026.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wax, wicks, tools and stickers named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you that our own "hot-pour up to 85°C" wording is not test data, that we publish no burn-down or breakage data, that our sticker page does not show its printed wording, and that you should not buy our tools if yours pass. A brand that approves containers properly is a brand that is still buying from us next year.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock on that date, and the out-of-stock amber 150 g jar is named as such. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent or contradicts itself, we say so.
The eight-test list, the minimum counts, the four-week schedule, the pass lines and the retest triggers are editorial judgement, not an industry or legal standard. Session length and the 1 cm stop line are common practice. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
