Commercial Fragrance · 500-Piece Decision
Five hundred 200 g gift jars at 8% need 8,000 g of fragrance, 8,400 g with a working 5% allowance. Split that across one, two or three scents and the oil bill, the pack sizes, the leftovers, the testing and the labelling all change. This page works each case through with real CSI prices.

scents is the answer for most 500-piece gift orders where you do not know every recipient · one if you do · three only if the client asks and the boxes are pre-assigned
Quick answers — read this first
How many fragrances should a 500-piece gift order have? Two, in most cases: one warm, one fresh, so most recipients get something they like without doubling your overhead. One scent suits identical boxes for a known audience. Three is the practical ceiling at 500 pieces. See 1 vs 2 vs 3.

How much fragrance oil for 500 candles? At 200 g and 8%, 8,000 g; with a 5% allowance, 8,400 g. Split 50/50 that is 4,200 g per scent; in equal thirds, 2,800 g per scent. Other formats are in the bulk quantity guide.

Does adding scents cost more? In oil, not necessarily — it depends on which oils you add. In overhead, yes: more testers, labels and pour batches, and if recipients choose their scent, a production buffer of 150 extra jars for two scents or 175 for three. See the choice buffer.

Which fragrances for a mixed gift order? One warm and one fresh covers most tastes: Vanilla Bean with Orchard Pear in the example here, with Eucalyptus Spearmint as the third if needed and Roasted Coffee as a gourmand alternative.
The short answer
1 scent: Vanilla Bean, 500 jars: 8,400 g as 8 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g = ₹64,328.00. Simplest; right when you know the audience.
2 scents: Vanilla Bean + Orchard Pear, 250 each: ₹47,876.00 of oil. Covers warm and fresh tastes; recommended default.
3 scents: Adds Eucalyptus Spearmint, 167/167/166: ₹41,073.02 of oil. Only with pre-assigned boxes; recipient choice needs 175 extra jars.
500 gift jars — what changes as you go from one scent to two to three 1 scent ₹64,328.00 oil bill 1 label 3 testers 1 pour batches+ Split: 500 per jar oil ₹128.66 2 scents ₹47,876.00 oil bill 2 labels 4 testers 2 pour batches+ Split: 250 / 250 per jar oil ₹95.75 3 scents ₹41,073.02 oil bill 3 labels 6 testers 3 pour batches+ Split: 167 / 167 / 166 per jar oil ₹82.15 Oil bill falls here only because the second and third oils are cheaper than Vanilla Bean — the scent count itself adds cost in testers, labels and leftovers.
For 500 × 200 g jars at 8% with a 5% allowance. The dark bars are the oil bill for the pack mixes in this guide; the dots, labels and tester counts are the overhead each extra scent brings. The bill falls from one scent to three only because Orchard Pear and Eucalyptus Spearmint are cheaper oils than Vanilla Bean; scent count itself never makes an order cheaper.
Straight answer
Should a 500-piece candle gift order have one fragrance, two or three?
For most 500-piece gift orders, two. Five hundred 200 g jars at 8% need 8,000 g of oil — 8,400 g with a working 5% allowance — and splitting that across two scents from different families, one warm and one fresh, gives most recipients something they like while keeping testing, labelling and pouring manageable. In this guide that is Vanilla Bean and Orchard Pear, 250 jars each, 4,200 g of each oil, ₹47,876.00 of fragrance. Choose one scent when the boxes are identical and you know the audience: 8,400 g of Vanilla Bean costs ₹64,328.00. Go to three only if the client asks and the boxes are pre-assigned; adding Eucalyptus Spearmint makes it 167/167/166 and ₹41,073.02 of oil, but three testers become six and three labels and pour runs have to be managed. If recipients choose on the day rather than receiving a pre-packed box, you need a production buffer — about 150 extra jars for two scents, 175 for three, on our working assumptions. The oil bill here falls as scents are added only because the added oils are cheaper; scent count on its own never saves money.
One line: two scents for a mixed audience, one for a known one, three only with pre-assigned boxes.
Test four candidates for the two slots before you decide: Vanilla Bean 15 g ₹130.00, Orchard Pear 15 g ₹105.02, Eucalyptus Spearmint 15 g ₹68.44 and Roasted Coffee 15 g ₹93.22. That is ₹396.68 — about ₹0.79 per jar across a 500-piece order.

One, two or three scents — side by side

Every scent you add to an order is another decision, another test, another label and another bottle to finish.

If you have not yet chosen the format, wedding favour candles prices the small formats and the bulk supplier checklist covers what to confirm before a large order; the Diwali buying guide applies the same arithmetic to a mixed festive range. The working order on this page is 500 gift jars: White Matte Glass Jars at the series' 200 g working fill, 8% load (16 g of oil and 184 g of wax each), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo and one Eco Thin C1 wick. The table compares the three options with a 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption — and pack mixes chosen from in-stock sizes to cover each oil's grams.

Read the table in two halves. The top half is the oil, and it says the bill depends on which oils you choose, not how many: Vanilla Bean is ₹7.65 a gram at 1 kg, Orchard Pear ₹3.74 and Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3.07, so replacing half or two-thirds of the Vanilla Bean with cheaper oils lowers the bill. Had the second scent been another premium oil, the bill would have stayed the same or risen. The bottom half is the overhead, and it only rises. More scents mean more candidates to test, more labels to design and print, more pour batches to run and clean between, and more opportunities to put the wrong candle in the wrong box.

The "whole kilos only" row shows what happens when a buyer skips the 100 g and 500 g top-ups and rounds every oil up to the next kilo. With one scent you are left with 600 g of Vanilla Bean; with two, 1,600 g across both; with three, 600 g. The leftover depends on where each scent's grams land against a whole kilo, and every extra scent is one more oil rounded up on its own. On CSI's listed catalogue, most oils cost the same per gram at 100 g as at 1 kg — for Vanilla Bean ₹7.90 against ₹7.65, for Orchard Pear ₹3.80 against ₹3.74 — so topping up with 100 g bottles is almost free and saves you buying stock you do not need.

Buy the top-up, not the extra kilo
When a scent needs 4,200 g, buy four 1 kg packs and two 100 g bottles rather than five kilos. For Vanilla Bean the two 100 g bottles cost ₹1,580.00 against ₹7,646.00 for the fifth kilo. Only where an oil has a real kilo break — such as Eucalyptus Spearmint at 13.3% — does the extra kilo come close on price, and even then only if you will use it.

Splitting the 500: 50/50, 60/40, thirds

An even split is not always right. If one scent is the clear favourite in your test, or the client wants a lead scent with a secondary option, weight the split. The tables show the grams and pack mixes for each common split, all at 8% in 200 g jars with 5% allowance.

50/25/25 total 500 8,000 g 8,400 g ₹46,510.00

Weighting the split toward the dearer oil raises the bill: 60/40 in favour of Vanilla Bean costs ₹3,498.00 more than 50/50, and 50/25/25 costs ₹5,436.98 more than equal thirds. That is not a reason to avoid weighting — if Vanilla Bean is what the recipients want, weight it — but it is a number to put in the quote. For the same maths at 1,000 pieces with corporate-neutral oils, see which fragrances for a 1,000-piece corporate order.

The split that ignored the box. A maker splits 500 jars three ways, then learns the client is packing one candle per employee from a single list with no scent preferences recorded. Somebody has to decide who gets which scent, and the packing team now handles three stock lines. If there is no reason to assign scents to people, one or two scents are faster to pack and harder to get wrong. Ask how the boxes will be packed before you split.

When recipients choose: the buffer

Pre-packed boxes need exactly 500 candles. A table where guests pick their own needs more.

If your client hands candles out at an event and lets people choose, you cannot know the split in advance. One scent may run out while another sits on the table. The usual answer is to produce each scent to cover more than its even share. How much more is a judgement; as a working assumption, this page covers each scent for 65% of recipients with two scents and 45% with three. That is a planning figure, not data about how people choose.

Working assumptions · 200 g jars · 8% · oil at the pack mixes above · base materials ₹186.92 per jar before oil
Recipient choice — extra jars and what they cost
Option Cover per scent Jars produced Extra jars Extra oil (with 5%) Extra material cost
1 scent 100% 500 0 0 g ₹0.00
2 scents 65% (325 each) 650 150 2,520 g ₹41,698.20
3 scents 45% (225 each) 675 175 2,940 g ₹46,198.83

The extra jars are not wasted — they become stock for your own range or the next order — but they are money spent before the event. With two scents the buffer is 150 jars; with three, 175. This is the strongest argument against three scents for a choose-your-own format, and a reason to confirm how the candles will be distributed before you quote. If the client insists on choice, two scents with a buffer usually beats three.

Picking the scents with a scoring sheet

With the count settled, choose the oils. For a mixed gift audience, the scents should come from different families so that a recipient who dislikes one is likely to accept the other: warm with fresh, or gourmand with floral. The example pairs a vanilla with a fresh fruit. The gifting hub maps families to recipient types. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so the choice comes from your own side-by-side test. Pour each candidate from a 15 g tester into a 200 g jar at 7.5% (15 g of oil) or into a smaller jar at 8%, cure, and score on a sheet like this:

Score each 1–5 · test in the jar and wax you will ship · cure first
Scent scoring sheet for a gift order
Criterion What to check Weight
Cold scent on opening Lid off, smelled at arm's length after cure ×2
Scent while burning Closed room, after about two hours ×2
Offence risk Would anyone on your test panel refuse it? ×2
Contrast with the other scent Does the pair cover different tastes? ×1
Cost per jar at the size you will buy From the tables above ×1
Stock at the size you need Confirm on the product page or WhatsApp Pass / fail

Weighting offence risk as heavily as scent strength is deliberate. A gift candle that one recipient in ten dislikes is a worse outcome than one that is slightly quieter but accepted by all. Use at least five people who are not candle makers on your test panel. And check stock before you finalise: an oil that wins the test but is out of stock at the size you need is not a choice. On the 24 September pull, Mogra and Rajnigandha are out of stock in every size; we do not publish restock dates.

That is ₹292.33 per jar in materials, before labour, gift packaging, freight and GST. The jars are ₹35,400.00 of it and the wax ₹58,184.00, together more than the oil. If the client's budget per jar is tight, the jar is where the saving is: the same order in 200 ml Salsa jars at ₹29.50 each would save ₹20,650.00 on containers, though the Salsa jar's fill is not published and would need weighing. For corporate paperwork on an order this size, see corporate gift candles; for a quote beyond the listed packs, the wholesale route.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Two scents need fewer testers, fewer bottles and less leftover stock than three, which means you buy less from us. We still recommend two for most 500-piece orders, because the third scent adds overhead the client rarely sees and a buffer you pay for if recipients choose. If you want to give recipients variety, give them two good scents rather than three average ones.
1
Ask how the candles will be distributedPre-packed per person, or chosen at an event? The answer decides whether you need a buffer.
2
Decide the count: one, two or threeOne for a known audience, two for a mixed one, three only with pre-assigned boxes and a client who asks for it.
3
Test candidates from different familiesTwo per slot, from 15 g testers, scored on the sheet above with a panel of at least five non-makers.
4
Set the split and the gramsEven unless the test or the client says otherwise. Grams per scent = jars × 16 g × 1.05 for 200 g jars at 8% with 5% allowance.
5
Buy kilos plus small top-upsUse the pack mixes above; avoid rounding every scent up to a whole kilo unless the oil has a real kilo break.
6
Label and pack by scent, not by personPour and store each scent separately, and pack from separate stock lines to avoid mix-ups. The Diwali back-schedule shows when each step has to happen for a festive delivery.
The CSI principle
Add a scent only when it earns its overhead.
Every extra scent costs a tester round, a label, a pour batch and often a production buffer. A second scent usually earns that by covering a different taste. A third rarely does at 500 pieces.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 and gift orders of this size are usually confirmed in October. Send us your two scents and 500-jar count on WhatsApp for a stock check and quote, with a GST invoice and MSDS and IFRA documents on request. We do not publish courier times or restock dates.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. More scents would mean more testers and more bottles sold. This page recommends two for most 500-piece orders and shows exactly what a third adds in overhead, leftovers and buffer — because that is what the arithmetic says.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wicks and wick stickers are from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull; the White Matte Glass Jar is the figure verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Pack mixes are practical in-stock combinations covering each oil's grams. Every total is plain arithmetic to two decimals.

The 8% load, 5% allowance, tester counts, 65% and 45% choice-buffer cover and the scoring weights are working assumptions for planning, not data. We have not published throw measurements for any oil. For a quote, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documents, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How many scents should I offer in a bulk candle gift order?
For 500 pieces, two in most cases: one warm and one fresh from different families. One scent suits identical boxes for a known audience; three is the practical ceiling and works best when boxes are pre-assigned. Each extra scent adds testers, labels, pour batches and, if recipients choose, a production buffer.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 500 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%, 8,000 g; with a 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns, 8,400 g. For other sizes: 500 × 85 g tins need 3,400 g at 8%, and 500 × 50 g hearts need 2,000 g. How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for a Bulk Wedding Candle Order? has more formats and counts.
How do I split fragrance oil between two scents?
Multiply the jars per scent by the oil per jar and add your allowance: 250 jars × 16 g × 1.05 = 4,200 g per scent for a 50/50 split of 500 × 200 g jars. For 60/40, that becomes 5,040 g and 3,360 g. Buy kilos plus 100 g top-ups rather than rounding each scent up to a whole kilo.
What if guests choose their own candle scent?
Produce a buffer. As a working assumption, cover each scent for 65% of recipients with two scents (650 jars for 500 people) or 45% with three (675 jars). The spare jars become stock, but they are paid for up front.
Which two fragrances go well together for gift candles?
Pick from different families so they cover different tastes: a vanilla with a fresh fruit, a wood with a floral, or a gourmand with a clean fresh scent. On CSI, Vanilla Bean with Orchard Pear is the example here; Roasted Coffee and Eucalyptus Spearmint are alternatives. Test with a panel before you commit.
Is it cheaper to use one fragrance for 500 candles?
Not automatically. The oil bill depends on which oils you choose: one scent of Vanilla Bean costs ₹64,328.00, while Vanilla Bean plus the cheaper Orchard Pear costs ₹47,876.00. One scent is cheaper in overhead — testers, labels, pour batches — not necessarily in oil.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team as part of the gifting and festive production cluster (2381–2390). Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The per-piece, split and quantity methods apply to any supplier's fragrance oils.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.
