Pure Performance Base, 100 g — the neutral candidate and the only CSI base sold in a test size · CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which base is neutral? CSI's Pure Performance Base page describes it as neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements". Verify it with your oil.

How do I test carrier odour? Blank: base alone in a capped bottle, on a blotter, and with reeds in a closed room — against an empty bottle with dry reeds.

How do I know it doesn't change the scent? Rank each blend against the neat oil on a blotter, blind, at 0, 15 and 60 minutes. See stage 2.

Is the difference real? Triangle test: 6 people pick the odd blotter of three. Five or six correct by guessing alone happens about 1.8% of the time.
The short answer
Answer: Start with a base described as neutral — CSI's Pure Performance page says "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements" — and prove it with blind sensory tests, because no CSI base publishes odour data or composition.
Why: At 15% load, 85% of the blend is carrier. Any carrier odour, or any change in which notes leave first, shows most with delicate oils at low loads in small rooms.
Method: Stage 1: blank carriers by headspace, blotter and reeded room, with an empty-bottle reed control. Stage 2: rank blends against the neat oil, blind. Stage 3: a triangle test between the two best.
Is the carrier staying out of the way? Three stages, cheapest first · each stage removes bases that interfere · evaluators never know which is which 1 Blank carrier base only Base alone: capped headspace, blotter at 0 / 15 / 60 min, reeded bottle in a closed room Score carrier odour 0–3 2 Trueness blend vs neat oil Each blend on a blotter beside the neat oil on a blotter; rank: which is closest? Rank 1–3 per evaluator 3 Triangle test A A B which is odd? Two blotters of one blend, one of another; find the odd one. Chance alone = 1 in 3 Count correct out of 6 Drop a base at stage 1 if it smells of itself in the room; at stage 2 if it is ranked furthest from the neat oil; and use stage 3 only to check that the two survivors really smell different before you pay more for one.
Three blind sensory stages, cheapest first: the carrier alone, each blend against the neat oil, and a triangle test between the two best bases. A base that smells of itself, drifts furthest from the oil, or cannot be told apart from a cheaper option drops out at the matching stage.
Straight answer
Which reed diffuser base should I choose if I want a low-odour carrier that does not interfere with my fragrance?
Start with the CSI base whose page calls it neutral — Pure Performance Base, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", ₹325.00 for 100 g — and prove the claim with your own oil, because no CSI base publishes odour data or composition. The other four bases are positioned to suit particular families, and some say they shape them — Depth's page promises "warmth, roundness" — so for a carrier that stays out of the way they are the ones to prove rather than assume. Carrier odour shows most where it matters most: at 15% load, 85% of the bottle is carrier, and a delicate floral in a small room will reveal it. Test in three blind stages: the base alone (capped headspace, blotter, and a reeded bottle in a closed room, against an empty bottle with dry reeds); each blend ranked against the neat oil on a blotter; and, if two bases tie, a triangle test where 6 people find the odd blotter of three. The three-base round costs ₹4,310.00 in CSI bases, bottles and reeds.
One line: start with the base described as neutral, and keep it only if blind noses cannot find it — blank, beside the oil, or against another base.
Start with the base whose page says it is neutral: Pure Performance Base, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", ₹325.00 for 100 g. Test it blank and with your most delicate oil beside the two bases CSI's pages assign to florals. The three-base odour round costs ₹4,310.00 in bases, bottles and reeds with your own oil.

The short answer: start neutral, then prove it with your nose

At 15% fragrance, 85% of what is in the bottle is carrier. If it smells of anything, you will smell it.

The CSI base whose page describes it as neutral is Pure Performance Base: its page says it has "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements" and is for all fragrance families. That makes it the obvious first candidate for a carrier that does not interfere. The other four CSI bases are positioned the opposite way — each page says the base is designed to suit, and in some cases shape, particular families: Lift for brighter florals and citrus, Softness for soft florals and powdery notes, Longevity and Depth for warm and rich families, with Depth's page saying it adds "warmth, roundness". Those may be exactly what you want for some oils. For a carrier that stays out of the way, they are the ones to prove rather than assume.

But "neutral" on a product page is a description, not a measurement, and CSI publishes no odour data and no composition for any base. So the honest answer is a short, cheap sensory test in three stages: smell each base on its own, smell each blend against the neat oil, and — if two bases survive — check whether people can actually tell them apart. It takes an afternoon for the first two stages and a week to see the reeded bottles in a room. The rest of this page gives the method, a priced kit, and a decision rule.

The worked example uses Japanese Cherry Blossom at 15% by weight in the 50 ml Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 50 ml — a delicate floral at a modest load, which is the hardest case for a carrier to stay hidden in. If your oils are heavier, carrier odour is less likely to show, but the test is the same. Every figure for the room, the evaluators and the fill is a labelled example.

Longevity Base ₹1,296.00 / 500 ml Amber, woody, resinous, spicy; slower "cold diffusion" Not for delicate florals per its own page
Depth Base ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml "Warmth, roundness"; rich gourmand, smoky Designed to shape — not a neutral choice

Choosing among CSI's bases for other reasons — family, strength, life — is covered in the base-selection pillar; this page narrows the choice to one property: how little the carrier gets in the way.

The CSI principle
A carrier that does not interfere is one your evaluators cannot pick out — blank, beside the neat oil, or against another carrier.
"Neutral" and "low-odour" are descriptions. Three blind sensory stages turn them into evidence for your oil.

Why carrier odour shows up, and when it does not matter

A reed diffuser releases carrier and fragrance together from the reed surface. If the carrier has an odour of its own — a faint solvent note, a sweetness, an alcohol lift on opening — it is released into the room alongside the fragrance. At high loads with strong, heavy oils, that odour is usually buried. At lower loads, with delicate florals, fresh greens or clean musks, it can show as a flat or chemical edge, a muted top note, or a scent that smells "not quite like the oil".

There is a second, subtler way a carrier can interfere: not by smelling of itself, but by changing which parts of the fragrance leave first. A carrier that evaporates quickly may lift the top notes ahead of the heart; a slower one may hold them back. That is not "carrier odour" in the strict sense, but to a customer it is the same complaint — "it doesn't smell like the sample". Stage 2 of the test catches both, because it compares the blend directly with the neat oil.

General practice · how carrier interference commonly shows · no figures
What you may notice, and what it usually points to
You notice… Commonly points to Which stage catches it
A faint solvent or sweet note in a room with a blank bottle The carrier's own odour Stage 1
The blend smells flatter or duller than the neat oil Carrier odour masking, or top notes held back Stage 2
The blend smells sharper or brighter than the neat oil at first Top notes lifted ahead of the heart Stage 2, then day-7 room score
Two blends in different bases smell alike to you but not to others A small difference — check it is real Stage 3
The room smells right on day 1, wrong on day 10 Release order over time, not carrier odour Reeded bottles, day 7 and 14

Carrier odour matters most when the fragrance is delicate, the load is low, the room is small and the customer is close to the bottle — a bedside table, a bathroom shelf. It matters least with dense gourmands, ouds and resins at higher loads. If your range is entirely heavy, you may not need this test at all; bases for heavy oud, amber and sandalwood is the better starting point. Alcohol-based carriers carry an obvious alcohol note on opening that fades as it evaporates; the solvent-route pillar and perfumer's alcohol as a base cover that route.

The common mistake: sniffing the open base bottle and calling it odourless. Most carriers smell of very little at the neck of a bottle at room temperature. The same carrier spread over the surface of six reeds in a small closed room for an hour can be quite noticeable. Fix: stage 1 includes a reeded blank bottle in a closed room — the way the customer will meet the carrier — not just a sniff at the cap.

Stage 1: smell the carriers on their own

For each base, fill one bottle with 40 g of base alone — an example 40 ml fill at an example 1.00 g per ml — and no fragrance. Add a tenth bottle that is empty except for 6 dry reeds: it tells you whether the reeds, the bottle or the room itself smell of anything, so you do not blame a carrier for a smell that was already there.

1
Headspace sniff after 24 hoursCap each blank bottle for 24 hours at room temperature. Have a helper hand them to you in a random order, uncapped one at a time, and sniff 5 cm from the neck. Score 0 (nothing), 1 (faint, only if you look for it), 2 (clearly there), 3 (would compete with a delicate fragrance). Rest your nose between bottles.
2
Blotter sniff over an hourDip a perfume blotter strip (not a CSI item; plain thick paper cut to strips works) 1 cm into each base. Code the strips on the back. Smell at 0, 15 and 60 minutes and score the same 0–3. A carrier that smells of nothing at first and of something at 60 minutes is leaving a residue note.
3
Reeded blank in a closed roomPut 6 reeds in each blank bottle and in the empty control bottle. Let them load for 24 hours in a separate space. Then place one bottle at a time in a small closed room for 30 minutes (example), and score at the door and at 1 m, blind. Start and end with the empty control.
4
Record and restFresh noses only: do it before meals, away from perfume, cooking and incense, and with at least two evaluators. Write every score before discussing them.

C1 Pure Performance blank ___ ___ / ___ / ___ ___ ___
C2 Softness blank ___ ___ / ___ / ___ ___ ___
C3 Lift blank ___ ___ / ___ / ___ ___ ___
C0 Empty bottle + dry reeds (control) ___ — ___ ___

A working rule for stage 1: a base passes if its average score is no higher than the empty control's in the room, and no higher than 1 on the headspace and blotter sniffs. A base that scores 2 or 3 in the room has an odour your customers will meet — it may still be fine for strong oils, but it is not the carrier you are looking for. If even the empty control scores above 0, fix the room before going further.

Stage 2: does the blend smell like the oil?

The best judge of a carrier is the neat oil itself, sitting on a blotter right beside it.

Now make the scented blends: for each surviving base, two bottles at 15% by weight — 6.0 g of oil and 34.0 g of base in a 40 g fill — mixed by weight and rested 24–48 hours, as every CSI base page asks. Check clarity against a white card and a black card at 0, 24 and 48 hours; a cloudy blend fails before you smell it.

1
Prepare coded blottersDip one blotter 1 cm into each blend and one into the neat oil. Code them on the back. The neat oil is labelled "R" for reference and is the only one the evaluators know.
2
Rank against the referenceEach evaluator smells R, then each coded blend in a random order, and ranks them 1 (closest to R) to 3 (furthest). Repeat at 15 minutes and 60 minutes, because a carrier that holds back top notes shows most at the start.
3
Note what is differentAsk for one word for the difference — flatter, sharper, sweeter, chemical, muted top, heavier. Words help you decide which differences matter for your product.
4
Reeds in, room scorePut 6 reeds in each scented bottle. On days 3 and 7, score each in the closed room blind on your house scale, and note whether it still "reads as" the oil. Weigh each bottle on day 0, 3 and 7 to confirm the low-odour base is still releasing fragrance.

Add up the ranks for each base across evaluators and times — lowest total is closest to the oil. A working rule: a base whose total is clearly the highest, and whose one-word notes repeat the same complaint ("flat", "chemical"), is interfering. If two bases tie at the top, stage 3 tells you whether the difference between them is real. Do not forget the room: a base that is truest on a blotter but releases almost nothing in the reeded bottle is low-odour and low-performing — a base that lasts long but barely smells deals with that problem.

Keep the load fixed while you compare carriers
It is tempting to raise the load in a base that smells weaker. Do not, during this test: at a higher load every carrier's odour is easier to hide, and you will no longer be comparing carriers. Fix the load at 15% for the comparison, then tune it in the winning base — 15%, 20% or 25%? covers that step.

Stage 3: can anyone actually tell the two best apart?

If two bases come out of stage 2 close together, run a triangle test before you pay more for one of them or change your production base. It is a standard sensory method and needs no equipment beyond blotters. Each evaluator gets three coded blotters: two dipped in one blend, one in the other. They pick the odd one out. If the two blends smell the same, people can only guess, and a guess is right one time in three.

Arithmetic of guessing · 6 evaluators · chance of each result if the blends smell identical
How many correct answers mean a real difference?
Correct Chance by guessing alone Reading (working rule)
2 of 6 64.9% Consistent with guessing
3 of 6 32.0% Possible difference — repeat with more people
4 of 6 10.0% Possible difference — repeat with more people
5 of 6 1.8% Clear difference (working rule)
6 of 6 0.1% Clear difference (working rule)

With 6 evaluators, five or six correct answers would happen by guessing alone only about 1.8% of the time, so treat that as a real difference. Four correct would happen by guessing about 10.0% of the time — worth repeating with more people before acting on it. Three or fewer is what guessing looks like. Swap which blend is the pair for half the evaluators, randomise the order on every tray, and never let evaluators confer. If the triangle test says your customers are unlikely to notice the difference, choose the cheaper or more convenient base and stop testing.

If six people cannot pick the odd blotter out, your customers will not pick the carrier out either.

If you only want to verify the neutral claim, drop Lift and test Pure Performance against Softness alone: ₹3,211.00 in CSI materials. Japanese Cherry Blossom is bought here as three 15 g packs because its 50 g, 500 g and 1 kg are currently out of stock; only 15 g and 100 g can be ordered. Pure Performance is bought as two 100 g packs (₹650.00) because the test needs about 113 g — less than a 500 ml would hold, for less money.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. If Pure Performance passes all three stages with your oil — no carrier odour in the room, closest to the neat oil, and no detectable difference from a family base in a triangle test — you have no reason to buy a second base for that oil. And if your current carrier, from anyone, passes the same three stages, keep it. The family bases at ₹1,099.00 or ₹1,296.00 are worth buying when your test shows they do something for an oil that the neutral one does not — not because a page says so.

Does the neutral base cost more per bottle?

Not at production sizes. Pure Performance, Lift and Softness are all ₹1,099.00 per 500 ml, so at the same density they cost the same per gram, and a 50 ml bottle at 15% has the same liquid cost in all three. The only price difference is in the test, where the 100 g of Pure Performance is the cheaper way to buy a small quantity. Longevity is the one base that costs more, at ₹1,296.00, and its page says to avoid light florals anyway.

Per 50 ml bottle · 40 g fill · 15% · oil at its 100 g rate (largest in-stock size) · bases at 500 ml, example density · excludes bottle, reeds, labels, freight and GST
Liquid cost by base

Softness ₹2.20 ₹30.00 ₹74.73 ₹104.73
Lift ₹2.20 ₹30.00 ₹74.73 ₹104.73

So the choice between a neutral and a family base is not a price decision; it is a scent decision. Choose the base your evaluators say keeps the fragrance truest, and if the triangle test says nobody can tell them apart, choose the one that is easiest to stock across your range. For a range of several delicate oils, standardising on one neutral base reduces your stock to one SKU, which one base in bulk or a base per family weighs against the gains from family bases.

Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. Stages 1 and 2 fit in a day or two, plus the 24–48 hour rest, so you can still choose the carrier for a delicate festive scent before production — but not a long room test. The truest base barely scents the room by day 7 Low odour, low release Check reeds and load before changing base — 7929, 7971

Repeat the test for each delicate oil you sell; one oil passing in a base does not mean another will. And keep a 50 g retained sample of each base lot so that, if a customer ever says a bottle smells "off", you can blank-test that lot against a fresh one. Making a premium, clear, consistent diffuser builds that into a quality routine.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer for a base seller is to call every base "low-odour". This page quotes only what each CSI base page says, points out that four of the five are positioned to shape a fragrance rather than stay neutral, and tells you to keep the neutral one — or your current carrier from anyone — if it passes.

Base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026; fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, ml-to-gram conversion, per-bottle cost, kit total and cost-per-day figure on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity or evaporation data for its bases, so every density used here is a labelled example and every g/day figure is either yours to measure or a labelled arithmetic grid.

Bottle counts per arm, weighing days, the clarity checkpoints, the room-scoring protocol and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 40 ml fill, the 1.00 g per ml density, the 0–3 odour scale, the 30-minute room exposure and the 6-evaluator panel are labelled working choices; the triangle-test chances are exact binomial arithmetic for a one-in-three guess. Frequently asked questions

What is the most odourless reed diffuser base?
No supplier's word settles it — test it. Among CSI's bases, Pure Performance is the one whose page describes it as neutral. Compare it blank, in a reeded bottle in a closed room, against an empty bottle with dry reeds.
Why does my reed diffuser smell like chemicals?
Often the carrier's own odour showing through a delicate oil at a low load, or a carrier that releases top notes ahead of the heart. Blank-test the carrier, then rank the blend against the neat oil on a blotter.
Does reed diffuser base have a smell?
Some carriers have a faint odour that is hard to notice at the bottle neck but noticeable when spread over reeds in a small room. Test it the way a customer meets it: reeded, in a closed room.
Is DPG odourless?
DPG is commonly described as low-odour. Alcohol-based carriers have an obvious alcohol note on opening that fades. CSI sells neither; whichever carrier you use, blank-test it with reeds.
How do I make my reed diffuser smell like the fragrance oil?
Use a carrier that ranks closest to the neat oil in a blind blotter comparison, keep the load within the base page's range and the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit, and judge the room on day 3 and 7, not day 1.
What is a triangle test for fragrance?
A standard sensory test: each person gets three coded samples, two the same and one different, and picks the odd one. Guessing is right one time in three, so a high number of correct answers means a real, noticeable difference.
Prove the carrier is invisible
Smell it blank. Rank it against the oil. Check the difference is real.
Pure Performance Base ₹325.00 for 100 g or ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml; Softness and Lift ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml; Gold 50 ml bottles ₹826.00 for ten; black fibre reeds ₹236.00 for 25. Tell us your most delicate oils and we will help you plan the odour test.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The three-stage sensory method and decision rule apply to any carrier from any supplier; the products named are CSI's.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Where millilitres are turned into grams, the page uses a labelled example density of 1.00 g per ml with a ±5% sensitivity (0.95–1.05 g/ml) — weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours; the 120 ml and 50 ml bottle sizes are listing sizes, not fill lines. Worked example: 40 ml example fill in the Gold 50 ml bottle = 40 g at the example density; at 15% = 6.0 g oil + 34.0 g base; blanks are 40 g of base alone. Working practices: 1 blank and 2 scented bottles per base, 1 empty bottle with 6 dry reeds as a control, 6 black reeds per bottle, 5% allowance, 2 g of neat oil for reference blotters, a 0–3 odour scale, blotter checks at 0, 15 and 60 minutes, 30-minute closed-room exposure, 6 evaluators. Triangle-test chances are binomial with p = 1/3: 10.0% for 4 or more of 6, 1.8% for 5 or more. Liquid cost uses the oil's 100 g rate (largest in-stock size) and each base's 500 ml price at the example density. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI measurements): every base page gives a 10–30% fragrance range of the total blend and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases", 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — "perfumery-grade", floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Depth — warmth, roundness, "slow diffusion", chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils"; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand. Marketing lines such as "performs in Indian climates", "no separation" and "even wicking" are claims to test. Some base pages mention rattan; CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, and no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; reed diameter, bottle neck size and fill line are not published. No CSI base is ranked above another on this page — the five are separated only by what their own pages say they are for. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
