How Do I Select a Commercial Reed Diffuser Base in India That Balances Fragrance Compatibility, Capillary Flow, Evaporation, Safety and Finished Product Cost?
Share
Which CSI base is best? None is ranked — CSI publishes no throw or life data. Shortlist the base each page writes for your family, plus neutral Pure Performance, and test.
Does the base change cost per bottle much? Little: four bases are ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml. Longevity adds about ₹31.52 per 100 g bottle here. Oil and packaging move cost more.
What does qualifying a range cost? ₹8,991.04 in CSI materials for three oils across three bases. See the kit.
The method in one paragraph
The five things in your question are not five equal scores. Two of them are gates: safety, because a base you cannot store, label or ship is not a commercial base however it smells; and fragrance compatibility, because a blend that clouds in a clear bottle is a returned product. The other three are scores you weigh against each other for your product: capillary flow — how readily the blend climbs the reeds and keeps releasing from them; evaporation — grams lost per day, inside a window you set from the life you want to sell; and finished product cost — per bottle, per day of use, and as a margin at your selling price. Take them in that order, for every oil the base will carry, and the decision almost makes itself.
CSI's product pages help with the first step and no further. Each of the five in-stock bases has a page that says which fragrance families it is written for, a 10–30% load range and a 24–48 hour rest. None publishes composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point, shelf life or throw data, and we will not rank them on any of those. So the straight answer is: shortlist by family from the pages, plus neutral Pure Performance; pass safety and compatibility as gates; score capillary flow, evaporation and cost on a sheet you write before testing; buy the base that passes and wins or ties for each SKU; and check every delivery against a retained sample. This capstone sets out the whole process for a three-fragrance commercial range, prices the qualification round, works the finished-product cost and margin, schedules it honestly against Diwali, and links every question in this section.
The pillars behind each stage are which reed diffuser base to buy in India (the base decision), Augeo-type, DPG and alcohol formulas (carrier types CSI does not sell), how much fragrance oil to add to 100 ml (load), making a 100 ml diffuser with a ready-made base (the basic method) and starting a profitable reed diffuser business (the business). The other section hubs — getting started with reed diffusers, diagnosing a weak diffuser and costs and wholesale buying — pick up where a stage on this page points.
| Criterion | Gate or score | Measured by | CSI data? | Owned in depth by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safety | Gate | SDS sections 2, 5, 7, 9, 14; flammability where the bottle stands; courier's written answer | Ask on WhatsApp whether an SDS is available | 7936, 7931 |
| Fragrance compatibility | Gate, per oil | Clarity against white and black cards at 0 h, 48 h, 7 days, after a cool night, with reeds | None — pages say "crystal clear" for the base alone | 7935, 7927 |
| Capillary flow | Score | Time for reed tips to wet; flip response; reed-tip condition at 7 and 14 days | None — reed page gives 6–8 reeds for 50–100 ml | 7933, 7923 |
| Evaporation | Score | Weighed g/day against a floor (lowest passing score) and a ceiling (fill ÷ target days) | None | 7932, 7928 |
| Finished product cost | Score | Liquid ₹ per bottle (by weighed density), cost per day, margin at your price | Prices only | 7938, 7937 |
Step 1: shortlist from the pages, not from a ranking
Start by reading each base page for what it says it is for, and match your oils' families to it. That gives you a shortlist of one or two family bases per oil; add Pure Performance Base as a neutral control for every oil, because its page says it suits all families and because it is the only CSI base sold in 100 g, which makes it the cheapest control. The example range on this page is three fragrances a small Indian brand might launch together — a night-blooming jasmine floral, a spiced wood and a tropical fruit — chosen to land on different base pages.
| Base | Sizes and price | Written for (per its page) | Notes from the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Performance Base | ₹325.00 / 100 g · ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | All families; neutral | "No added fixatives"; 20% recommended; typical 75/25; flip after first hour |
| Lift Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | Floral, citrus, green, fruity | "Perfumery-grade"; names rose, jasmine, orange, lemon, lime, mango, peach |
| Softness Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | Soft florals, powdery/musky, light gourmand | Names lavender, jasmine, rose, peony, vanilla milk |
| Depth Base | ₹1,099.00 / 500 ml | Chypre, leather, smoky, rich gourmand | "Slow diffusion"; "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy" |
| Longevity Base | ₹1,296.00 / 500 ml | Oriental/amber, woody, resinous, spicy, gourmand | Slower "cold diffusion"; avoid fresh citrus and aquatics; reduce load if clouding |
| CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ | ₹1,499.00 | Page: strongest projection | Out of stock — not offered |
| SKU oil | Family | Page-matched base(s) | Neutral control | Smallest in-stock oil size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raat Ki Rani | Floral (jasmine) | Lift (florals) or Softness (jasmine) | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹130.00 |
| Saffron Cedarwood | Woody, spicy | Longevity (woody, spicy) | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹103.84 |
| Mango Coconut | Fruity | Lift (fruity — names mango) | Pure Performance Base | 15 g · ₹93.22 |
Two things are worth noticing before any testing. First, four of the five bases cost the same per 500 ml, so the base choice changes cost per bottle only through density and through Longevity's premium — the break-even post shows when that premium can pay. Second, the pages for heavy families describe slower diffusion; if your complaint is weak throw, a heavy-family base is a test, not a cure — heavy oud, amber and sandalwood sets that trap out. For an alcohol, DPG or Augeo-type carrier you would blend yourself, CSI sells none of them; ready-made base versus DPG and premium base versus blending solvents cover that route.
Steps 2 and 3: the two gates
Safety first. Ask CSI on WhatsApp whether a safety data sheet is available for each shortlisted base, and read sections 1 (is it the exact product), 2 (hazard classification), 5 (fire-fighting), 7 (storage), 9 (physical properties, including density and flash point where stated), 14 (transport) and 16 (revision date). Ask your courier, in writing, whether it will carry the finished diffuser. We will not promise that an SDS exists for every base; if your courier, storeroom or retail buyer needs one and it is not available, that base fails the gate for that channel. Think, too, about where the bottle will stand: a diffuser beside a diya or candle is a different risk with a flammable carrier, which is why the perfumer's alcohol post puts flammability before smell.
Compatibility second, for every oil. Mix each oil in each shortlisted base by weight at your intended load and at five points above it, in clear glass, with a base-only blank. Look against white and black cards on mixing, at 24 and 48 hours (the pages' rest), at 7 days, after a cool night and back at room temperature, and after 48 hours with reeds in. A pass is clear and single-phase every time. A useful working rule is to sell at least five points below the highest load that passed — and never above the oil's IFRA limit for the category covering reed diffusers (commonly Category 10A), which you read from the oil's certificate; CSI publishes no IFRA percentage on its pages. Never clear a cloudy blend with water or alcohol. Clarity tests before a 5 kg order is the full protocol; high loads without separation covers the top of the range.

Steps 4 to 6: score capillary flow, evaporation and cost
For the pairs that passed both gates, fill test bottles — here two per pair in CSI's 120 ml bottle at an example 100 g fill, 20%, 8 white fibre reeds — weigh them with their reeds, flip at one agreed time for every bottle (the pages say after the first hour for Pure Performance and after 2–3 hours for Longevity; use the later time for all), and record for 14 days. Capillary flow: note how long the reed tips take to look wet, photograph the tips on a white card on days 3, 7 and 14, feel for stickiness, and score the room again an hour after a day-14 flip — a big jump means the tips had stopped releasing well. Evaporation: grams per day from the weights, compared with a ceiling you set from the life you want (fill ÷ target days) and a floor you find (the lowest g/day that still passes your blind room score). Cost: per bottle and per day, below.
| Score | Readings | Becomes 0–5 by | Example weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capillary flow and reeds | Wet-tip time; tip photos days 3, 7, 14; stickiness; flip response | Your reed grade (5 = tips like day 3, no flip jump; 0 = blocked) | 20% |
| Evaporation and throw | g/day; blind 0–5 room score at 1 m and 3 m on days 1, 7, 14 | Room score if g/day is inside your window; 0 if it is outside | 45% |
| Finished product cost | Liquid ₹ per bottle; cost per day = liquid ₹ ÷ (fill ÷ g/day) | Cheapest pair ÷ this pair × 5 | 35% |
Weights are yours and should be written down, signed and dated before the first bottle is mixed. A brand selling long-life bedside diffusers might weight evaporation most; one selling statement pieces for lobbies might weight throw higher and accept a shorter life. A difference smaller than the spread between bottles of the same pair is a tie, and a tie is decided by the things outside the scorecard: stock simplicity, which base your other oils already pass in, and reorder reliability. The two-base scorecard works through this arithmetic with an illustrative pair; a base that lasts but barely smells and a base that evaporates too quickly cover the two ways a base can miss the window.
The qualification round for a three-SKU range
Every oil goes into neutral Pure Performance and into its page-matched base: Raat Ki Rani and Mango Coconut into Lift Base, Saffron Cedarwood into Longevity Base. That is six oil–base pairs, two bottles each, plus one base-only blank per base — 15 bottles in two packs of ten. Each bottle holds 20 g of oil and 80 g of base. Two bottles per pair is a screen, a labelled working practice; repeat the winning pair with more bottles before a production order.
| Pair | Oil | Base | Bottles | Question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1 | Raat Ki Rani | Pure Performance Base | 2 | Neutral control |
| P2 | Saffron Cedarwood | Pure Performance Base | 2 | Neutral control |
| P3 | Mango Coconut | Pure Performance Base | 2 | Neutral control |
| P4 | Raat Ki Rani | Lift Base | 2 | Page-matched candidate |
| P5 | Saffron Cedarwood | Longevity Base | 2 | Page-matched candidate |
| P6 | Mango Coconut | Lift Base | 2 | Page-matched candidate |
| Blanks | None | Pure Performance, Lift, Longevity | 3 | Base alone: clarity, odour |
Finished product cost and margin
At production rates — each oil at its cheapest per-gram production pack (500 g or 1 kg), each base at its 500 ml rate with an example density of 1.00 g per ml — the liquid in a 100 g bottle at 20% costs as below. Add the 120 ml Gold bottle (₹106.20) and 8 white reeds at the 50-pack rate (₹72.00) for the CSI materials. Then add your own label, box and labour — shown here as labelled examples of ₹10.00, ₹35.00 and ₹25.00 that you replace with your quotes — and set it against an example selling price of ₹799.00. GST, freight, marketplace fees and returns are excluded.
| SKU and base | Liquid | CSI materials | + example non-CSI | Total | Gross margin on price | Markup on cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raat Ki Rani · Pure Performance | ₹311.32 | ₹489.52 | ₹70.00 | ₹559.52 | 30.0% | 43% |
| Raat Ki Rani · Lift | ₹311.32 | ₹489.52 | ₹70.00 | ₹559.52 | 30.0% | 43% |
| Saffron Cedarwood · Pure Performance | ₹279.21 | ₹457.41 | ₹70.00 | ₹527.41 | 34.0% | 51% |
| Saffron Cedarwood · Longevity | ₹310.73 | ₹488.93 | ₹70.00 | ₹558.93 | 30.0% | 43% |
| Mango Coconut · Pure Performance | ₹255.12 | ₹433.32 | ₹70.00 | ₹503.32 | 37.0% | 59% |
| Mango Coconut · Lift | ₹255.12 | ₹433.32 | ₹70.00 | ₹503.32 | 37.0% | 59% |
Two lessons sit in that table. The base is a small share of the total, and between Pure Performance and Lift — both ₹1,099.00 per 500 ml — it makes no difference at all at the same density; only Longevity's premium shows, at ₹31.52 per Saffron Cedarwood bottle. The oil and the packaging move the cost far more. So on cost, the base decision is mostly about cost per day: a base that keeps a passing room score at a lower g/day gives the customer more days for the same price. At a measured 2.0 g a day — an example; yours comes from the scale — a 100 g bottle lasts 50 days; at 1.5 g, 67 days. Selling 120 ml diffusers at ₹799: the maximum raw-material cost and what a 100 ml diffuser costs to make take the margin maths further.
The priced qualification round
Listed, in-stock CSI packs only, with a 5% liquid allowance. Pure Performance carries three pairs and a blank — 609.0 g — which the cheapest listed combination covers as 1 × 500 ml + 2 × 100 g. Lift carries two pairs and a blank (441.0 g, one 500 ml at any density above 0.882 g per ml); Longevity one pair and a blank (273.0 g). Each oil goes into two pairs, 84.0 g each, bought as the cheapest mix of its small sizes.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Performance Base | 609.0 g | 1 × 500 ml + 2 × 100 g | ₹1,749.00 | — |
| Lift Base | 441.0 g | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,099.00 | — |
| Longevity Base | 273.0 g | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,296.00 | — |
| Raat Ki Rani | 84.0 g | 1 × 100 g | ₹700.00 | You hold this oil |
| Saffron Cedarwood | 84.0 g | 6 × 15 g | ₹623.04 | You hold this oil |
| Mango Coconut | 84.0 g | 1 × 100 g | ₹500.00 | You hold this oil |
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle, 120 ml | 15 bottles | 2 × pack of 10 | ₹2,124.00 | You test in your own bottle |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (White) | 12 × 8 = 96 | 1 × pack of 100 | ₹900.00 | You hold reeds from one batch |
| CSI qualification round | ₹8,991.04 | |||
| Weighing Scale + 250 ml beaker | 1 each | 1 + 1 | ₹954.00 | You own both |
| With scale and beaker | ₹9,945.04 |
The 96 reeds come as one 100-pack of white (₹900.00), cheaper than a 50 and two 25s (₹980.00). Raat Ki Rani's handle carries a stale "ships-21st-june-2025" note; it was in stock in every size on 14 October 2026, as were Saffron Cedarwood and Mango Coconut. Saffron Cedarwood is one of the oils that is cheaper per gram at 500 g (₹5.17) than at 1 kg (₹6.87) — use the 500 g for production. Production base is bought in 500 ml bottles; there is no 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg listing, and larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp with no published volume discount — sampling before a 25 kg order and 1 kg, 5 kg or 25 kg when starting cover the order size.
Scheduling it honestly before Diwali
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 — 25 days from today, 14 October. The qualification round's 48-hour gate and 7-day readings fit; its 14-day readings are tight; a 30-day life test does not fit at all. The working plan below shows what a three-SKU launch can honestly claim by when. Dates are a labelled example; your dispatch deadline depends on your courier and your customers.
| Date | Day | Step | What you can claim by then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed 14 Oct | 0 | Order test materials | Nothing yet |
| Fri 16 Oct | 2 | Mix, clarity 0 h, start 48 h rest | Mixing-day clarity |
| Sun 18 Oct | 4 | 48 h clarity look; reed and weigh day 0 | 48-hour clarity gate passed or failed |
| Sun 25 Oct | 11 | Day-7 weights, room scores, 7-day clarity | 7-day clarity, g/day and room score |
| Mon 26 Oct | 12 | Decide base per SKU; order production base | A base per SKU on 7-day evidence |
| Thu 29 Oct | 15 | Production blend + 24–48 h rest | Production blend rested |
| Sun 01 Nov | 18 | Bottle, label, pack | Bottled stock |
| Wed 04 Nov | 21 | Last dispatch for delivery before Diwali (example) | Shipped |
Two honest consequences. First, a product launched on this schedule is qualified on 7-day evidence; say nothing on the label about how many weeks it lasts until your own bottles have shown it — keep weighing the test bottles through November. Second, if a pair fails a gate on day 4 there is still time to re-run it at a lower load, but not to qualify a new base from scratch and still ship; in that case launch the SKUs that passed and hold the other for the November–February wedding season. 500 diffusers for Diwali corporate gifting works the quantities for a larger festive order.
The decision rule, and when to re-qualify
| If this is true for the SKU | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| No base passes the safety gate for your channel | A documentation or transport gap | Don't buy yet — resolve SDS/courier, or choose a base you can document |
| No base passes the clarity gate | This oil does not pair at this load | Step down 5 points and re-gate; else try another family base |
| One base passes both gates | The only candidate | Buy it in 500 ml; confirm with more bottles |
| Two pass; one wins the weighted score beyond your tie margin | A real winner | Buy the winner in 500 ml |
| Two pass and tie | Either will do | Buy the one that serves more of your range — often Pure Performance |
| The winning base differs by SKU | A two- or three-base range | Buy each in 500 ml; write a spec per SKU; weigh the stock cost (7992) |
| What changed | Safety gate | Clarity gate | Scores |
|---|---|---|---|
| New delivery (lot) of the same base | KEEP | CONFIRM — 100 ml weight, blank, quick ladder vs retained sample | CONFIRM — 3 pilot bottles |
| New oil, or the same oil reordered after a long gap | CONFIRM — oil SDS/IFRA | REPEAT for that pair | REPEAT for that SKU |
| Load changed by 5 points or more | KEEP | REPEAT | REPEAT |
| Different bottle or reed type | KEEP | CONFIRM with reeds in | REPEAT |
| New season (first cold month, first hot month) | KEEP | CONFIRM — cool-night look | CONFIRM — g/day in the new season |
| New SDS version or a different base supplier | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT |

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The convenient answer for a base seller is a single "best" base. This page refuses to rank CSI's bases, because CSI publishes no throw, evaporation or longevity data; it shortlists only from what each page says, puts safety and clarity ahead of every sales claim, shows that the base is a small share of product cost, and tells you when one base is enough.
Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, base-pack count, per-bottle liquid cost, kit total and cost per day on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; density and grams-per-day figures are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.
Bottle counts per arm, the clarity checkpoints, the weighing schedule, the room-scoring scale and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 100 g fill, the 20% load, two bottles per pair, the scorecard weights, the 3.0 × 4.0 m room, the ₹10.00 label, ₹35.00 box, ₹25.00 labour, the ₹799.00 price, the 1.5–2.0 g/day figures and the Diwali plan dates are labelled examples you replace. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Example fill 100 g per 120 ml bottle at 20% = 20 g oil + 80 g base. Example density 1.00 g per ml (weigh 100 ml of each base to replace it). Working practices: 2 bottles per oil–base pair, 1 base-only blank per base, 8 reeds, first flip at 3 hours for every bottle, 5% liquid allowance, clarity at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days, after a cool night and with reeds; weights on reed days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14; blind 0–5 scoring at 1 m and 3 m; a five-point clarity margin. Labelled examples: weights 20/45/35%, room 3.0 × 4.0 × 2.9 m, label ₹10.00, box ₹35.00, labour ₹25.00, selling price ₹799.00, 1.5 and 2.0 g/day, and the Diwali working plan. Production-rate costs use each oil's cheapest per-gram pack of 500 g or 1 kg and each base's 500 ml rate. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, start at 10%, maximum 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "slow diffusion", 10–30%; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%; all five say rest 24–48 hours and describe themselves as crystal clear. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; 6–8 reeds for a standard 50–100 ml bottle, more for stronger and faster diffusion, fewer for subtler and longer-lasting. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point, shelf life or SDS figure for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; and no IFRA limit for any oil. Any density on this page is a labelled example the reader replaces with a weighed figure; any g/day is a labelled example the reader replaces with a measured one. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
