How Much Soy Wax Is Needed for 500 Candles?

How much wax 500 candles need, by fill size

Start with one number and one number only: the grams of soy wax in one finished candle. Not the jar's volume, not the jar's advertised capacity — the weight of wax you actually pour, including whatever top-up the candle takes the next morning. Multiply by 500 for net wax, add an allowance for the wax that never reaches a jar, then round up to packs the store actually sells. The table below does that at six common Indian fill weights with a 7% allowance throughout.

Read the two ends of that table before you choose a jar. Five hundred votives take 33 kg of wax and 500 large jars take 161 kg — nearly five times the quantity, five times the storage, and a difference of ₹64,947.20 in wax alone. Fill size is the single biggest decision in the order, and it is usually made by the jar you fell in love with on Instagram rather than by arithmetic. Make it deliberately.

A second honest point about this table: at CSI the per-kilogram rate does not improve as the quantity rises. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg whether the order is 1 kg or 107 kg. So the 300 g row is not a worse deal per kilogram than the 60 g row — it is simply five times as much wax. The saving in a 500-candle order comes from choosing the right fill weight and the right load, not from the pack size.

Work from the container, not from the jar label

CSI lists most containers by the weight of wax they take — a 70 gram votive, an 85 gram tin, a 150 gram jar — which makes planning straightforward, because that stated fill weight is your line 1. Where a container is listed by volume instead, convert with care: soy is commonly taken as roughly 0.9 g per ml, and a candle needs headspace, so a 200 ml jar takes closer to 160 g of wax than 200 g. Getting this wrong by 40 g a candle is a 20 kg error across 500 candles.

What the 7% allowance is doing at 500 candles

The allowance is the wax you buy and never sell: film clinging to the pitcher and melter, second-pour top-ups, the dregs at the bottom of a melt, and the handful of candles that come out wrong. On a 100-candle first run, 7% is a fair planning figure. At 500 candles it usually falls, because the fixed losses — the film in the melter, the dregs — are spread over more candles and because you are pouring the same jar repeatedly instead of learning it.

Here is what that is worth in wax. On 100 kg net, every percentage point of allowance is 1 kg of wax, ₹507.40. A maker who runs at 4% buys 104 kg and spends ₹52,769.60; at 7% it is 107 kg and ₹54,291.80; at 10% it is 110 kg and ₹55,814.00. The spread between a careful process and a wasteful one across this single order is about ₹3,044.40 — roughly the cost of six extra candles, which is real but is not the number that will make or break the job. Use 7% until your own weights say otherwise, and do not let the allowance debate delay the order.

One allowance line does get bigger at 500, not smaller: rejects concentrated in the first session. If something is wrong with the wick, the pour temperature or the jar, you find out after 125 candles, not after 10. That is the real argument for splitting the run across four days rather than hiring help and pouring 500 in one marathon — and for burning one candle from session one before session two begins.

The pack plan, the grade and the whole basket

The store lists soy in 500 g, 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg packs, so a 107 kg order is a combination, not a single item. Ten 10 kg packs, one 5 kg and two 1 kg packs is the tidiest cover. Because the rate is flat, any combination that adds to 107 kg costs the same ₹54,291.80 — choose the one with the fewest bags. If you would rather carry a small buffer, eleven 10 kg packs gives 110 kg for ₹55,814.00, and the extra 3 kg becomes opening stock for the next run rather than waste.

For a single consignment of more than 10 kg in one pack size, or for the whole 107 kg landing together, ask on WhatsApp — bulk pricing, GST invoicing and MSDS or IFRA documentation are all handled there, and it is also where a delivery of this weight gets planned properly rather than arriving as eleven separate parcels.

Grade changes the wax line more than anything else in the basket. At 107 kg, Eco Soy CSI 400 comes to ₹42,714.40, Natural Soy Pearl Wax to ₹45,453.60, CSI 464 to ₹54,291.80, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks to ₹64,093.00 and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 to ₹68,159.00. That is a ₹25,444.60 spread across the order. It is also the worst possible moment to change grade: a 500-candle deadline is not the time to discover that a new wax wants a different pour temperature and a different wick. Test the grade on a small batch this month and use it for the next 500.

Splitting 500 candles across scents

The wax does not care: 100 kg is 100 kg whether it becomes one scent or ten. The oil does care, and how much depends entirely on whether your oil is priced flat across pack sizes or in tiers. Apple Cinnamon is ₹4.74 a gram from the 50 gm bottle up to the 1 kg pack, so splitting is free. British Rose runs ₹4.25/g at 50 gm, ₹3.42/g at 100 gm, ₹3.19/g at 500 gm and ₹3.07/g at 1 kg, so every split pushes part of your order up the ladder.

Two practical rules follow. First, split into quantities that land on pack boundaries: 1 kg, 500 g or 100 g per scent, not 800 g, because awkward quantities are bought in awkward packs. Second, keep the scent count down for the first big order — five scents across 500 candles means five separate wick and cure checks, five labels and five pieces of stock you might be left holding. Vanillin-bearing oils add one more consideration: the Apple Cinnamon page notes vanillin is present and advises testing in white wax, so if half your 500 are white candles, pour a sample and leave it in the light for a week before committing.

Pouring 500 and curing them in time

Five hundred candles is not a scale problem, it is a scheduling one. Work it in sessions of about 125, four days apart if you can, and count backwards from the date the customer needs them.

Then do the calendar arithmetic honestly. Diwali 2026 is 8 November 2026. Working back: two or three days to label, box and hand over to a courier that will be slower than usual in the festival week; 14–21 days of cure before that; four pour days and their top-up mornings before that; and the wax on your table before any of it. That puts the last safe pour at about mid-October and the order in the first days of that month. Wedding and corporate orders behave the same way — the cure is the fixed part, and it is the part customers never see and never allow for.

When 500 is the wrong number to buy for

Against our own sales interest: do not buy 107 kg of wax for a 500-candle order that is still a conversation. A confirmed purchase order with an advance is a reason to buy the whole quantity in one consignment; an enquiry from a corporate buyer who wants to see samples first is not. Soy keeps well — the CSI 464 page gives a 60 month shelf life in cool, dry storage away from sunlight and moisture — so unused wax is not wasted, but ₹54,291.80 tied up in flakes while you wait for a confirmation is cash you cannot spend on jars.

Two sensible half-measures. If the order is likely but unconfirmed, buy the first session's wax — 30 kg, ₹15,222.00 — pour 125 candles, and place the balance when the order lands; the rate does not improve with volume, so you lose nothing by splitting except a second delivery charge. If the order is confirmed but the scent is not, buy all the wax and none of the oil: wax is the long-lead item and the one the whole plan waits on, while fragrance can be added scent by scent as the customer decides.

And if the 500 are for your own retail rather than one buyer, be honest about how long they will take to sell. Five hundred cured candles sitting in a Chennai summer storeroom are not stock, they are a slow problem: soy softens in heat, labels lift, and a candle that has spent four months at 38°C does not present like a fresh one. Plan quantity against the weeks you can actually sell through, not against the batch size that felt efficient.
