How to Create a Festive Candle Collection Without Buying Too Many Oils
Where does the perceived variety come from, if not scent? Format first, then vessel and lid, colour, size, moulded shapes and naming. A customer buys an object at a price point. Scent count is the one variable they never audit.
What does the three-oil collection cost? ₹17,204 for 3kg of oil; about ₹60,696 in total materials for 246 units across 11 SKUs. An eight-oil, one-format collection of comparable volume costs about ₹60,929 and gives you 8 SKUs at a single price point.
Which three? The cross-seasonal ones — Sandalwood (₹503/100g), Vanilla Bean (₹790/100g) and Woody Oud (₹453/100g). Concentration raises the cost of choosing wrong, so every one of the three must have a second season.
The multiplication method
Every September the same conversation happens. A maker with a good product and a small budget decides the festive range needs eight or ten new scents, because that is what a range looks like on a competitor's website. Eight bottles get ordered, eight burn tests get half-finished, eight listings get photographed in a rush, and by the second week of November it is clear that three scents are carrying the season and five are not. The five that failed did not fail because they were bad oils. They failed because the customer never got far enough down the page to meet them.
The correction is arithmetic. Scent is only one of six axes a candle can vary along, and it is the most expensive one — it is the only axis where the variable cost is a bottle of oil with a minimum order size and a shelf life. The other five are format, vessel, colour, size and name. All five are cheaper, all five are visible in a photograph, and four of the five can be changed after the wax has already been bought.
Worked example: an 11-SKU Diwali collection from three oils
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, roughly twelve weeks from mid-August. That is exactly the window in which fragrance is decided and ordered, so this example is priced and sized to be ordered now, poured through September, cured, packed and shipped in October. The three oils are Sandalwood, Vanilla Bean and Woody Oud — the reasoning is in the last section, and the reasoning matters more than the names.
| SKU | Scent | Format | Oil per unit | Units in run | Oil used |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sandalwood | Tealight pack of 6 (20g each) | 9.6g | 25 | 240g |
| 2 | Sandalwood | 100g jar | 8g | 45 | 360g |
| 3 | Sandalwood | 200g jar | 16g | 25 | 400g |
| 4 | Vanilla Bean | Tealight pack of 6 | 9.6g | 25 | 240g |
| 5 | Vanilla Bean | 100g jar | 8g | 45 | 360g |
| 6 | Vanilla Bean | 200g jar | 16g | 25 | 400g |
| 7 | Woody Oud | Tealight pack of 6 | 9.6g | 25 | 240g |
| 8 | Woody Oud | 100g jar | 8g | 45 | 360g |
| 9 | Woody Oud | 200g jar | 16g | 25 | 400g |
| 10 | All three | Trio gift set — 3 × 100g jars | 0g extra | 12 | 0g |
| 11 | Sandalwood + Vanilla | Duo gift box — 2 × 100g jars | 0g extra | 15 | 0g |
Read the last two rows carefully, because they are the whole idea. SKUs 10 and 11 have a fragrance cost of zero. They are assembled from 100g jars that are already in SKUs 2, 5 and 8 — 66 of the 135 jars poured get boxed into sets rather than sold singly. The set is not a new product to manufacture; it is a new listing, a new price point and a new photograph made out of finished goods. Every festive maker who tells you their gift set is their best seller built it this way, whether or not they say so.
The oil column adds up to exactly 1,000g per scent: 400g into 200g jars, 360g into 100g jars, 240g into tealights. That is not a coincidence, it is how the run was sized. Working backwards from the bottle size is the discipline that stops a festive plan from drifting into a fourth and fifth oil. Three kilograms of fragrance, 285 gross units, 246 sellable units once the sets absorb their jars, and eleven listings.
| Line | What to order | Quantity | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil 1 | Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | 1 kg | ₹5,027 |
| Oil 2 | Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil | 1 kg | ₹7,646 |
| Oil 3 | Woody Oud Fragrance Oil | 1 kg | ₹4,531 |
| Wax | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (34.5kg needed) | 3 × 10kg + 1 × 5kg | ₹20,992 |
| Wicks | Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (660 needed) | 500 + 2 × 100 | ₹4,130 |
| Tealights | Big Tealights Empty (450 needed) | 5 × pack of 100 | ₹5,900 |
| 100g vessel | Shot Glass Jar 130g (135 needed) | 23 × pack of 6 | ₹6,624 |
| 200g vessel | Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid | 15 × pack of 5 | ₹3,540 |
| Colour | Candle Dye Liquid, Red | 50 ml | ₹472 |
| Gift boxes | Corrugated box 11 × 11 × 8 cm | Pack of 50 | ₹1,121 |
| Filler | Crinkle Paper Filler, Red | 500 g | ₹300 |
| Labels | Candle Care Sticker Roll | Pack of 500 | ₹413 |
| Total | Full 11-SKU festive collection, 246 sellable units | ₹60,696 | |
| Format | Sandalwood | Vanilla Bean | Woody Oud | Sensible retail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tealight pack of 6 | ₹220.70 | ₹245.80 | ₹215.90 | ₹599 |
| 100g jar | ₹149.30 | ₹170.30 | ₹145.40 | ₹449 |
| 200g jar | ₹243.90 | ₹285.80 | ₹236.00 | ₹749 |
| Trio gift set (3 × 100g) | ₹502 including box, filler and stickers | ₹1,499 | ||
| Duo gift box (2 × 100g) | ₹356 including box, filler and stickers | ₹1,099 | ||
Sold out completely, that collection carries a retail value of roughly ₹1,66,554 against ₹60,696 of materials — materials at about 36% of retail, close to the 30–35% band a small Indian candle brand should be working to. More importantly, it spans five price points from ₹449 to ₹1,499. The ₹449 jar catches the person buying for a colleague. The ₹599 tealight pack catches the person who wants something for a puja thali. The ₹1,499 trio catches the corporate buyer. One 200g jar at ₹749, repeated eight times in eight scents, catches only the person who was already going to buy a ₹749 candle.
Three oils at 1kg versus eight oils at 500g
This is the comparison that decides whether the season ends with cash or with shelves. Both routes below are sized to produce roughly the same number of sellable units, and both are priced at live CSI pricing. The eight-oil route is modelled the way it is actually built in practice — eight scents in a single 200g jar format, because nobody photographs and lists twenty-four SKUs in a twelve-week window.
| Measure | 3 oils × 3 formats | 8 oils × 1 format |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance bought | 3 × 1kg = 3,000g | 8 × 500g = 4,000g |
| Fragrance spend | ₹17,204 | ₹19,769 |
| Wax | 35kg · ₹20,992 | 46kg · ₹27,590 |
| Wicks | 700 · ₹4,130 | 300 · ₹1,770 |
| Vessels | ₹16,064 | 250 amber jars · ₹11,800 |
| Total materials | ₹60,696 | ₹60,929 |
| Sellable units | 246 | 248 |
| Listings (SKUs) | 11 | 8 |
| Retail price points | 5 (₹449 – ₹1,499) | 1 (₹749) |
| Gift sets possible | 2, from existing stock | 0 without extra stock |
| Burn and wick tests before launch | 9 (3 scents × 3 formats) | 8 (8 scents × 1 format) |
| Raw oil left if the weak lines underperform | ≈300g | ≈1,250g across 5 scents |
| Value of that surplus | ₹1,720 | ₹5,924 |
| Can the surplus pour in January? | Yes — all three sell year round | No — five are festive-only |
Two lines in that table deserve honesty rather than salesmanship. First, the eight-oil collection has a higher gross retail value on paper — 248 jars at ₹749 is ₹1,85,752 against ₹1,66,554 — because a 200g jar is a higher-value unit than a tealight pack. That paper number is exactly the trap: it assumes all eight scents sell at the same rate, which is the one thing that never happens. The three-oil collection needs only 73% sell-through to beat the eight-oil collection at 65% (₹1,21,584 against ₹1,20,739), and a range with five price points and two gift formats sells through faster than a range with one.
Second, the three-oil route requires more testing, not less — nine format tests against eight scent tests. But format tests are a different kind of cost. A wick and pour schedule proven for a 100g shot glass jar is proven forever; you reuse it at Christmas, for wedding favours and for corporate hampers. A burn test on a festive-only scent is spent the moment the season ends. Concentration converts a recurring cost into a one-off asset, which is the same reason it protects your capital.
Variety without fragrance: the five other levers
Once the scent count is fixed, everything else on the shelf is a design decision with a cost you already control. These are the five levers in the order of how much perceived range they buy per rupee spent.
The same 200g fill of the same oil is a different product in amber glass with a black lid, in black matte, in frosted, in ceramic and in a golden tin. Nothing about the candle changes except what the customer sees, which is the entirety of an online purchase decision. Vessel is also where you move a product between tiers: a ₹47.20 amber jar and a ₹130 ceramic jar are the difference between a ₹749 candle and a ₹1,199 one, on identical wax and identical fragrance.
| Vessel | Pack price | Per unit | What it signals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amber Shiny Glass Jar, Black Lid | ₹236 / 5 | ₹47.20 | The core range. Warm, festive, hides vanilla discolouration |
| Black Matte Glass Jar | ₹708 / 10 | ₹70.80 | Premium tier. Reads modern and expensive in photographs |
| Clear Frosted Glass Jar | ₹708 / 10 | ₹70.80 | Soft, spa-adjacent. Best with a pale dye or no dye at all |
| Maroon Matte Glass Jar | ₹708 / 10 | ₹70.80 | Festive-specific colour without touching the wax |
| Ceramic Jar for Candle Making | ₹130 / 1 | ₹130.00 | Keepsake. The vessel outlives the candle, which justifies the price |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85g fill | ₹360 / 12 | ₹30.00 | Travel and favour tier. The cheapest festive vessel that still looks intentional |
Format is the only lever that reaches a different customer rather than the same customer in a different mood. Beyond the three formats in the worked example, two more cost almost nothing in fragrance. Wax melt clamshells at ₹29.50 each (pack of 50, ₹1,475) take about 4g of oil for a 50g clamshell at an 8% load — roughly a quarter of a 200g jar's fragrance for a product with its own listing and its own buyer. Wax sachets from a ₹589 six-cavity mould are wickless, unbreakable, and the cheapest thing you can put in a hamper.
A moulded candle is the purest form of this whole argument: the fragrance, the wax and the dye are the same, the vessel cost is zero, and the product is unrecognisable next to a jar. Pour Soy Pillar Wax — ₹300 for 500g, ₹600 for 1kg, ₹3,000 for 5kg — rather than container wax, because a container soy will not release cleanly from a mould. The mould is a one-off tooling cost that amortises across every season you own it.
| Mould | Price | Why it works for a festive range |
|---|---|---|
| Ladoo Silicone Mould | ₹472 | Mithai-shaped candles read as festive instantly and photograph beautifully in a box |
| Kaju Katli Silicone Mould | ₹390 | Flat diamonds pack tight into hampers with no wasted volume |
| 8-Cavity Modak Silicone Mould | ₹580 | Eight per pour, so a small batch fills a large listing quickly |
| Lotus Mould | ₹471 | The floating-lotus form is the most requested Diwali shape in India |
| 15 Cavity Rose Moulds | ₹153 | Cheapest way to add a decorative topper or a hamper filler piece |
| Twisted Pillar Mould | ₹825 | Sculptural pillar tier, priced well above a jar candle of the same wax weight |
One liquid candle dye at ₹472 for 50 ml will colour an entire festive run, and colour is the cheapest way to make the same oil look like a different candle. Keep it to one or two colours across the collection — a range with a single red thread reads as designed; a range with seven colours reads as leftovers. Dye the wax body with liquid dye rather than mica: micas are pigments that do not dissolve, so they belong on the surface of a moulded piece or on packaging, not suspended in a melt pool where they can foul a wick. On size, the 200g / 100g / 20g ladder in the worked example is deliberate — each step is roughly half the price of the one above it, which is what makes a range feel navigable rather than arbitrary.
Naming is the lever makers skip and then wonder why eleven products look like three. A name does two jobs: it tells the customer what occasion the product is for, and it makes the format difference legible. "Sandalwood 100g" is a database entry. "Chandan · Puja Tealights, pack of six" tells someone exactly where the product goes and why it is not the other one. Name the set too — the trio is the thing a corporate buyer searches for, and it deserves a better name than "Gift Set 1".
Which three oils to pick — and the wax that carries them
Concentration cuts both ways. Spreading ₹17,204 across eight oils means no single mistake is fatal; putting it into three means each choice carries three times the weight. That is the trade, and it is worth making only if the three are chosen on durability rather than novelty. The test is simple: a scent qualifies for one of your three slots only if you can name a second season for it. Sandalwood pours again for weddings. Vanilla pours all year. Oud pours for corporate and wedding hampers. A pumpkin or a fallen-leaves note may be a lovely Diwali candle, but it is a fourth oil at 100g, not one of your three at 1kg.

A three-oil collection spanning jars, tealights and moulded pieces needs two waxes, not one — container soy will not release from a mould, and pillar soy does not adhere to glass. The wax also sets your fragrance load ceiling, and the ceiling is what caps your throw. Overshooting it does not make a stronger candle; it makes an oily one that sweats and burns unpredictably.
| Wax | Use it for | Load | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | All nine jar and tealight SKUs — the default for the run | Up to 13% | ₹299 / 500g |
| Soy Pillar Wax | Moulded lotus, mithai, pillar and shaped festive pieces | Standard | ₹300 / 500g |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (flakes) | Single-pour containers, low frosting, strong glass adhesion | Up to 10% | ₹260 / 500g |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | Small test batches and a creamy one-pour finish, no additives | Standard | ₹399 / 1kg |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | The ceramic-jar premium tier — smoother finish, fuller throw | Standard | ₹325 / 500g |
Wick all nine container SKUs with Eco Candle Wicks, and remember that wick size is set by jar diameter, not by scent — which is precisely why a three-oil, three-format collection is less work than it looks. You are testing three vessel diameters once and reusing that data forever. Add fragrance at the temperature the wax specifies and stir for a full two minutes; for Eco Soy CSI 400 that is 80–90°C. If throw disappoints after a proper 14-day cure, work through the weak throw diagnosis guide before you conclude you needed more scents.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This guide argues that you should buy three fragrance oils instead of eight, which is an argument against our own short-term interest. We make it because the order data is unambiguous: the makers who reorder every season are the ones whose surplus is small and pourable, and the ones who disappear are the ones holding eight half-empty bottles in January.
Every price, size and product link here is live CSI stock in August 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. The order sheet, the per-unit costings and the three-versus-eight comparison are calculated from those prices, not estimated, and every input is named so you can rerun the arithmetic against your own jar, wick and format choices.

Figures verified August 2026: All fragrance oil, wax, wick, vessel, dye, mould and packaging prices are live CSI pricing across the sizes named. Costings assume an 8% fragrance load throughout: a 200g candle uses 16g oil and 184g wax, a 100g jar uses 8g oil and 92g wax, and a 20g tealight uses 1.6g oil and 18.4g wax (a pack of six therefore uses 9.6g oil and 110.4g wax). Wax is costed at Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹5,999 per 10kg (₹0.60/g), wicks at Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹590 per 100 (₹5.90 each), the 200g vessel at Amber Shiny Glass Jar ₹236 per pack of 5 (₹47.20 each), the 100g vessel at Shot Glass Jar 130 gram ₹288 per pack of 6 (₹48 each) filled to 100g, and tealight cups at Big Tealights ₹1,180 per 100 (₹11.80 each) with Tea Lights Aluminium at ₹649 per 100 (₹6.49 each) given as the lower-cost alternative. Fragrance is costed at 1kg pricing. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated to a 13% fragrance load and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 to 10%; always work to the ceiling stated on the wax you buy. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring. Cure times of 14–21 days reflect standard practice for soy container candles. Retail prices shown are illustrative targets derived from the 30–35% materials-to-retail rule, not CSI prices. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 (Lakshmi Puja, Pradosh Kaal muhurat 5:31–7:55 pm); Christmas 2026 is 25 December.
