Why strength is harder in soy

Soy container wax generally releases fragrance more softly than paraffin. It burns with a comparatively cool melt pool, and the lighter, fast-evaporating parts of a blend get less help leaving it. That is why the same oil can seem louder in a paraffin candle, as explained in why the same fragrance smells strong in paraffin but weak in soy. None of this makes soy weak. It makes soy less forgiving of the wrong oil, the wrong ceiling and a short cure — the three things a maker controls.

It also changes what "strongest oil" means. In soy, an oil is strong if its character survives the cooler pool and the weeks of cure. The oils that tend to do that are the ones with weight in the base — woods, resins, vanilla, patchouli, spice — though CSI's own reviews show florals and a herbal can do it too. So this guide grades every oil by the evidence behind it, and treats base-note weight as a sensible tie-breaker, never as a result.

Headroom: what each soy wax is rated to hold

Headroom is the gap between the load you pour and the maximum the wax states. It is what lets you raise a quiet scent without leaving the wax's comfort zone. The table costs a 200g candle at each wax's stated maximum, using Gardenia (₹4,332/kg) as a reference oil so the waxes compare like for like. Where a page states no maximum, the row stays at an 8% test load.

Three conclusions for a strength-led soy line. First, only two waxes let you legitimately go past 10%, and between them the price gap at maximum load is ₹8.87 per candle at 1 kg pricing (₹6.61 once CSI 468 is bought in 5 kg or 10 kg). Second, the cheapest soy candles on the table are cheap partly because they carry the least oil — an Eco Soy CSI 400 candle at 8% is ₹74.13 cheaper than a Luxury Soy Chunks candle at 13%, and ₹43.32 of that gap is oil. Third, a blank in the load column is not permission. Eco Soy CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax may well hold more than 8%, but nothing on their pages says so; test before you rely on it.

Strong-reading oils by family, graded by evidence

CSI does not publish throw scores and does not run burn tests to rank its oils. So instead of a ranking, here is an evidence grade. Grade A: a buyer describes hot throw. Grade B: a buyer describes strength, concentration or overwhelming scent, without saying the candle was lit. Grade C: a buyer describes a reaction in a room or a sale, but not strength. Grade P: no relevant review; chosen on the general principle that base-heavy families carry in soy. The cure column reflects standard practice for soy containers by family, not a CSI test.

Two patterns matter for buying. British Rose, a Grade A oil, is the cheapest per candle on the table after Citrus Lemon, so the best-evidenced strength is not the premium end of the catalogue. And the oils most likely to need a load above 8% in soy are the ones in the woody, gourmand and spice rows, because those are the families you would judge at day 21; buy them into a 13%-rated wax so the test has room. Four oils worth a soy strength test

Each card shows every size, the price per kilo, and how many 120g jars at 10% (12g of oil each) the pack fills — the jar and load used in the ladder test below.

The real cost of maximum strength

A 200g candle is always 200g. At 8% it is 184g of wax and 16g of oil; at 13% it is 174g of wax and 26g of oil. So moving up the load swaps ten grams of cheap wax for ten grams of expensive oil. The wax credit is small — ₹5.99 per candle at 13% — but it is real, and it matters most, proportionally, on the cheapest oils. The bigger lesson is in the last row. On a ₹8,960 oil, running 100 candles at 13% instead of 8% costs ₹8,361 more in materials. If a 10% Gilli Mitti candle scores the same as a 13% one on your ladder, that is money you keep on every run. The soy strength ladder: one oil, three loads

This test answers one question for one oil: what is the lowest load that is genuinely strong in your soy candle? It needs a wax whose stated range covers all three rungs, so it uses Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (8–13%). Everything except the load stays fixed. The example uses Gardenia because a concentrated oil is where the answer is most likely to be "less than you think".

Per jar, the 8% rung costs ₹163.30 (₹66.13 wax, ₹41.57 oil at the 100g price, ₹5.90 wick, ₹47.20 jar, ₹2.50 sticker), the 10% rung ₹172.25 and the 13% rung ₹185.68. If a different wick has already proven itself in this 6 cm jar, use it — the point is only that all six jars share one.

Cure calendar for a Diwali dispatch

Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Assume a planning dispatch date of 1 November to leave a week for courier and gifting, and count back by the cure each family generally needs in soy. Standard practice for soy containers is 14–21 days, with fresher scents settling sooner and woody, spice and gourmand scents improving towards day 21.

Read the right-hand column carefully, because it is the one that catches people. A ladder test poured on 20 September gives its day-21 answer on 11 October — the same day the woody batch has to be poured. Today is mid-September, so there is still time, but only just. If your woody or spice ladder cannot start by 20 September, either decide on the day-14 jars alone for this festival, or build the Diwali line on the Grade A and B oils and test the rest for the next season.
