Cheap vs good value

Makers on a budget tend to sort by price and buy from the top of the list. On any catalogue sold by weight, that puts the smallest packs first, and small packs carry the highest per-gram price. On CSI the 15 g costs a median 23.1% more per gram than the same oil's 100 g. The cheap-looking bottle is often the expensive way to buy the oil. Good value needs a different test: what does a gram cost at the size you will reorder, and can you actually reorder it? The six oils below show how far apart those two ideas can be.

Read down the verdicts. Only two of the six are simply cheap and good value. Citronella is the starkest case: at 100 g it costs more per candle than most premium oils, and at 500 g it costs less than almost anything in the collection. Mango Coconut is similar on a smaller scale, 20.7% cheaper per gram at the kilo than at 100 g. Grapefruit Oleo is cheap today, but its 50 g and 1 kg are out of stock, so a range built on it has no production size to scale into until they return. Mahogany Shea has the dearest tester in the value tier at ₹10.93 a gram, then drops to ₹4.89 at 100 g. If you already know its profile, skip the tester.

The value tier: 28 oils

This is every oil on CSI whose cheapest in-stock production size (100 g, 500 g or 1 kg) costs ₹5.00 a gram or less. 7 are under ₹3.50 a gram and 21 sit between ₹3.50 and ₹5.00. They are ordered by that best price. The 100 g and 1 kg columns show where the saving is; a size marked "Out of stock" cannot be bought on the pull date. The tester column shows the 15 g price where one is in stock.

Three patterns are worth knowing. First, the tier is overwhelmingly fresh, fruity, green and light floral, with a few warm exceptions: Roasted Coffee, Chocolate Fudge, Cinnamon Vanilla, Woody Oud and Fallen Leaves. If your range needs warm, woody or gourmand scents, the value tier can supply some of them, but not all. Second, 23 of the 28 have a 15 g tester in stock, so you can prove most of the tier for under ₹120 an oil. Third, the best size is often not the kilo. For oils like Peach Melon Berry and Gardenia, the 100 g is already the cheapest rate.

What a value core saves

The table compares four value-tier oils against the median in-stock 100 g, which is ₹6.29 a gram (₹100.64 of oil per 200 g candle at 8%). All four are bought at 100 g, the size most small brands reorder in. Material cost adds the standard base of ₹186.92: 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, an Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80.

The saving is ₹33.80 to ₹44.19 per candle, or ₹3,380.00 to ₹4,419.00 per hundred. Material cost here is oil, wax, wick and jar only; it excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. The same comparison against a premium oil is starker: Dark Vanilla at 100 g puts ₹126.40 of oil into the same candle, more than double Cucumber Green Tea. Neither choice is wrong. Two cautions keep the saving real. First, hold the load. If a value oil needs 10% to match what a median oil does at 8%, its saving shrinks by a quarter. Making a value oil work

A value oil is only good value if the candle it goes into sells. These steps take an oil from the value tier to a costed, tested product without paying more than you need to at any stage.

Shopping list

A two-stage value start: five testers to choose from, then 100 g of the four winners with materials for the 25 candles they make. Oil and wax are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices were verified on 10 September 2026.

Stage 1 costs ₹486.16 and gives five scents to test. Stage 2 assumes four of them pass (Fresh Strawberries is the one dropped in this example; swap in whichever fails for you). Four 100 g bottles make 25 candles at 16 g each, which need 4.6 kg of wax, so the 5 kg pack leaves 0.4 kg for pour loss and test burns. The 50 wicks leave 25 spare for the next run. Average oil cost across the four is ₹61.62 per candle. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.
