Commercial Fragrance · Diwali Quantities
Diwali quantity planning has one twist ordinary production does not. If your best scent sells out in the last fortnight, you may not get more in time. So the order is candles × fill × load, plus pour loss, plus a deliberate reserve on the scents you know will sell, and nothing extra on the ones you do not.
5.38 kg
oil for 320 Diwali candles (200 g at 8%) with a 5% pour-loss allowance, before any festive reserve · 6.1 kg bought with reserve and pack rounding · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil do I need per Diwali candle? 16 g for a 200 g candle at 8%, 12 g for a 150 g candle and 8 g for a 100 g candle. Multiply by your candle count and add 3–5% for pour loss and test burns.

How much for 100, 250 or 500 candles? For 200 g candles at 8% with 5% allowance: 1.68 kg for 100, 4.20 kg for 250, 8.40 kg for 500. See the quantity table for other sizes.

Should I order extra oil for Diwali? On proven scents, yes: a festive reserve of 10–15% (our working assumption) protects against a sell-out when late restocks cannot be counted on. On new scents, no: order the plan and reorder if they sell.

What does a 320-candle Diwali plan cost in oil? ₹35,270.32 with reserve for the four scents in our example, ₹33,277.28 without. See the plan.
The short answer
Formula: Oil = candles × fill weight × load × (1 + pour-loss allowance) × (1 + festive reserve). 200 g at 8% = 16 g per candle.
Quick sizes: 200 g at 8% + 5%: 100 candles 1.68 kg · 250 candles 4.20 kg · 500 candles 8.40 kg · 1,000 candles 16.80 kg.
Reserve: Working assumption: 15% on the hero scent, 10% on other proven scents, none on new scents. Leftover oil carries into the November–February wedding season.

From candle count to bottles: the hero scent in this page's Diwali plan Sandalwood · 120 candles · 200 g at 8% · 5% pour-loss allowance · 15% festive reserve (working assumptions) 120candles× 200 gfill weight× 8%load= 1,920 goil in the candle+ 5%pour loss 96 g+ 15%reserve 302 g2,318 gto cover2,400 gbought in packs Bought: 2 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g = 2,400 g for ₹12,064.32 Without the reserve the same scent needs 2,016 g: 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 100 g for ₹10,556.28 The reserve costs ₹1,508.04 and covers 24 more candles if the hero sells out early
The first four boxes are the same arithmetic as any production run. The two additions are the pour-loss allowance, which every run needs, and the festive reserve, which only proven scents get. The last box rounds up to real packs. Every percentage here is a working assumption to adjust to your own records.
Straight answer
How much fragrance oil should I order for Diwali candle production?
Start with 16 g of oil for every 200 g candle at an 8% load (12 g for 150 g, 8 g for 100 g). Multiply by the candles you plan in each scent, then add 3–5% for pour loss and test burns. That is the order for an ordinary run. Diwali adds one decision: a festive reserve on the scents you know will sell, because restocks on popular sizes cannot be counted on in the last weeks before Sun 8 Nov. Our working assumption is 15% on the hero scent, 10% on other proven scents and nothing on new ones. For a 320-candle plan of 120 Sandalwood, 80 Dark Vanilla Oud, 60 Raat Ki Rani and 60 Spicy Cinnamon, that means 5,120 g of oil in the candles, 6,100 g bought after allowance, reserve and pack rounding, costing ₹35,270.32 against ₹33,277.28 with no reserve. Leftover woods and florals are not wasted: they carry into the November–February wedding season. Order early: on our working schedule, oil should be in hand by Mon 5 Oct.
One line: reserve on what is proven, restraint on what is new, and round up to packs at the end, not the start.
The hero scent is the one to secure first. For 120 Sandalwood candles with a 5% allowance and a 15% reserve, the order is 2 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g at ₹12,064.32. Sandalwood is ₹5.03/g at every size from 100 g, so the kilo costs nothing extra per gram.

Grams per candle, grams per run

Every Diwali quantity question starts with one multiplication. Get it right before you think about reserves or packs.

Oil is a fraction of the candle's total weight. A 200 g candle at 8% holds 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. A 150 g candle holds 12 g, and a 100 g candle 8 g. Multiply by the number of candles, then add an allowance for oil lost in the jug, on the thermometer and in test burns. This series uses 5%, the top of the usual 3–5% range, as a working assumption. The table does that sum for common Diwali run sizes.

8% load · 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns (working assumption) · oil only
How much oil a Diwali run needs, by candle count and size
Run 100 g candles (8 g oil) 150 g candles (12 g oil) 200 g candles (16 g oil)
50 candles 420 g 630 g 840 g
100 candles 840 g 1.26 kg 1.68 kg
250 candles 2.10 kg 3.15 kg 4.20 kg
500 candles 4.20 kg 6.30 kg 8.40 kg
1,000 candles 8.40 kg 12.60 kg 16.80 kg

These are totals across all scents. Split them by scent before ordering, because each oil is bought separately. The split should follow expected demand, not equal shares: the scent that sold best last Diwali, or the one your buyers ask for by name, gets the largest share. If this is your first Diwali, a sensible default is a larger share for the most familiar scent and equal shares for the rest. How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 100 Candles?, How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 500 Candles? and How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 1,000 Candles? work through fixed counts outside the festive context.

Load changes the total directly. For the 320-candle plan below, the whole order moves as follows, before any reserve:

320 candles at 200 g · 5% allowance · four scents · cheapest in-stock pack mix per oil · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
The same Diwali plan at 6%, 8% and 10%
Load Oil per candle Oil to cover Oil cost
6% 12 g 4,032 g ₹25,155.88
8% 16 g 5,376 g ₹33,277.28
10% 20 g 6,720 g ₹40,253.68

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%, the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Decide the load from your test candles, not from the table. If your tests say 8%, do not order for 10% "just in case"; the extra oil will sit in a bottle.

The festive reserve

In March, running out of a scent costs you a week. In the last fortnight before Diwali, it can cost you the season.

Ordinary production planning orders what the plan needs and reorders when stock runs low. Diwali breaks that rhythm. Demand is concentrated into a few weeks, many makers are buying the same festive scents at the same time, and a restock on a popular size that late cannot be guaranteed. The answer is not to overbuy everything. It is to carry a deliberate reserve on the scents that are proven, and none on the ones that are not.

Working assumptions · set your own from last year's sales
How much festive reserve to carry
Scent status Reserve Why
Hero scent, proven last year 15% Most likely to sell out; most costly to be without
Other proven scents 10% Likely to sell; a reserve covers a strong week
New this Diwali None Unproven; reorder if it sells, carry no leftover risk
Out of stock (Mogra, Rajnigandha) Not orderable Plan without them; no restock date is published

The reserve percentages are working assumptions, not rules. If you have last year's sales by scent, use the gap between what you poured and what you could have sold as your reserve instead. If you sell only to a fixed order, such as a corporate client, you need the allowance but not the reserve; Fragrance Oils for Diwali Corporate Gift Candles covers that case.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easiest advice for a supplier is "order extra of everything, it is Diwali". We do not recommend it. A reserve on a new scent is money in a bottle you may not open until spring. Put the reserve only on scents that sold before. For everything else, order the plan, test early, and reorder in October if it sells — accepting that a late reorder may not arrive in time, which is exactly why new scents should be a small share of a Diwali run.

A 320-candle plan, worked

Here is a four-scent Diwali plan for a small business: 320 candles of 200 g at 8%. Sandalwood is the hero, proven last year, with 120 candles and a 15% reserve. Dark Vanilla Oud is a proven second scent, 80 candles with a 10% reserve. Raat Ki Rani and Spicy Cinnamon are new this Diwali, 60 candles each, with no reserve. Each oil is bought in the cheapest in-stock mix of 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs that covers its total.

200 g at 8% · 5% allowance · reserve as shown · cheapest in-stock mix · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Diwali plan: 320 candles, four scents
Oil Candles Status In candles Allowance Reserve To cover Packs Cost
Sandalwood 120 Hero, proven last year 1,920 g 96 g 302 g 2,318 g 2 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g (2,400 g) ₹12,064.32
Dark Vanilla Oud 80 Proven, second scent 1,280 g 64 g 134 g 1,478 g 3 × 500 g (1,500 g) ₹8,535.00
Raat Ki Rani 60 New this Diwali 960 g 48 g — 1,008 g 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 100 g (1,100 g) ₹7,474.00
Spicy Cinnamon 60 New this Diwali 960 g 48 g — 1,008 g 2 × 500 g + 1 × 100 g (1,100 g) ₹7,197.00
Total 320 5,120 g 6,100 g ₹35,270.32

The plan puts 5,120 g of oil into candles and buys 6,100 g, costing ₹35,270.32. Without any reserve, the same four scents would cost ₹33,277.28, so the reserve adds ₹1,993.04, all of it on the two proven scents. For Raat Ki Rani and Spicy Cinnamon the reserve is zero, and the pack rounding alone leaves a little over. Buy Diwali Candle Fragrance Oils in Bulk explains why Dark Vanilla Oud is bought as 500 g packs and Spicy Cinnamon as two 500 g and a 100 g.

Overbuying, underbuying and leftovers

The two mistakes are not equally costly. Underbuying the hero scent costs sales in the best weeks of the year. Overbuying a new scent costs cash tied up in a bottle. Here is what the plan leaves over after the candles are poured, and how many extra candles that oil could make at 16 g each.

Grams bought minus grams needed for candles and pour loss
What the plan leaves over
Oil Bought Candles + pour loss Spare Extra candles
Sandalwood 2,400 g 2,016 g 384 g 24
Dark Vanilla Oud 1,500 g 1,344 g 156 g 9
Raat Ki Rani 1,100 g 1,008 g 92 g 5
Spicy Cinnamon 1,100 g 1,008 g 92 g 5

The spare on Sandalwood and Dark Vanilla Oud is the reserve doing its job: if the hero sells out early, there is oil for more candles without waiting for a delivery. The spare on the new scents is only pack rounding. None of it is wasted. Sandalwood, oud and florals all suit the November–February wedding season, and Fragrance Oils for Wedding Candle Making covers wedding candles. A sealed bottle stored cool and dark keeps its value for the next run.

The quantity mistake that looks like fairness. Splitting the run equally across scents because you cannot decide. Eighty candles of each of four scents sounds balanced, but it guarantees the hero runs short and the new scents run long. Split by what you expect to sell, even if the expectation is rough, and let the reserve absorb the error on the scents you trust. If you truly have no information, give the most familiar scent the largest share; at Diwali that is usually a sandalwood, a white floral or a warm cinnamon.
Check stock before you finalise the split
A plan is only as good as the stock behind it. Mogra and Rajnigandha are out of stock in every size, and Sacred Sandal Ember has only its 500 g in stock. If a scent you want has missing sizes, the cheapest mix changes. Check the product pages on the day you order.
The CSI principle
Reserve where you are sure, restrain where you are not.
A festive reserve is insurance on the scents that will sell. On the scents that might not, the cheapest insurance is a small order and an early test. The same kilo of oil is a safety net on one scent and a dead weight on another.
Send us your plan by scent — candles, size and load — and we will work out and quote the oil, plus wax, wicks and jars if you want them. GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documents are available on request.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's quantity page usually errs towards more. This one tells you to carry no reserve at all on new scents, and shows the extra cost of the reserve on proven ones so you can decide whether it is worth it.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Quantities, pack mixes and costs are plain arithmetic on those prices, and pack mixes were found by checking every combination of in-stock 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs.

The 8% load, the 5% allowance, the reserve percentages and the 320-candle split are working assumptions, not a forecast. Your own sales history is the better guide. For a quote on your plan, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
