Buyer question · ₹10,000 collection
The usual advice is that bulk is cheaper and variety is expensive. On CSI's listed prices that is mostly wrong above 50 g. Twenty scents at 100 g cost about the same per gram as four at 500 g, unless you choose the four carefully. This page shows the numbers and then splits ₹10,000 for you.
₹4.97
average per gram for 20 scents at 100 g. Four oils with a real 500 g break average ₹3.56; flat-priced oils cost the same at 500 g as at 100 g · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Is it cheaper to buy fewer fragrance oils in bulk? Only for some oils. Four flat-priced oils at 500 g cost ₹10,572.80 for 2 kg; the same four as 100 g bottles cost ₹10,569.80. Choose four oils with a real break, like Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut, and 2 kg costs ₹7,115.00.

Where is the real price step? At 15 g. Across the 55 oils listing 15 g and 100 g, the 15 g costs a median 23.1% more per gram. In the 20-oil pool on this page the median premium is 31.3%. Above 50 g most oils are flat. See the per-gram ladder.

How should I split ₹10,000? Three lead scents at 500 g, six range scents at 100 g, eight 15 g testers: ₹9,404.70 for 2,220 g, 131.25 production candles. Details in the recommended split.

What is the hidden cost of buying many scents? Unsold stock and admin, not price. If 5 of 20 scents at 100 g never sell, ₹2,487.36 of oil sits idle. If one of four 500 g bottles fails, ₹1,770.00 does (Fresh Strawberries).
The short answer
2 kg, priced: 20 × 100 g ₹9,949.44 · 20 × 2 × 50 g ₹10,555.30 · 4 flat oils × 500 g ₹10,572.80 · 4 break oils × 500 g ₹7,115.00 · 2 × 1 kg ₹7,362.40.
Per-gram rule: 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium over 100 g. 50 g vs 100 g: median 0.0%. 1 kg vs 100 g: within ±1% for 52 of 91 oils; 24 oils save 5% or more.
Recommended: 3 leads at 500 g (₹5,805.20) + 6 at 100 g (₹2,729.64) + 8 testers (₹869.86) = ₹9,404.70. The ₹5,000 version uses the same logic at half the budget.

Price per gram, same oil, every size — three shapes you will meet in a ₹10,000 order ₹7.00 ₹5.00 ₹3.00 15 g 50 g 100 g 500 g 1 kg Apple Cinnamon · flat from 50 g (₹4.74) Honeydew Melon · drops at 500 g Orchard Pear Solid: Apple Cinnamon · dashed: Honeydew Melon · dotted: Orchard Pear. All three pay a premium only at 15 g. Breadth is cheap above 50 g for most oils. Bulk only pays where a line keeps falling after 100 g.
Each line is one oil priced at every listed size. All three fall steeply from 15 g, which is the tester premium. Apple Cinnamon is then flat at ₹4.74 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg, so buying bigger saves nothing. Orchard Pear keeps falling until 100 g and then flattens. Honeydew Melon is flat to 100 g, then drops to ₹3.40 at 500 g, which is where bulk genuinely pays.
Straight answer
I have ₹10,000 to build my candle fragrance collection — should I buy more scents in small quantities or fewer scents in bulk?
Buy more scents, but not in the smallest size. On CSI's listed prices the only reliable per-gram step is from the 15 g tester up to 50 g or 100 g: the 15 g costs a median 23.1% more per gram than the same oil at 100 g. Above that, most oils are priced flat. Twenty scents at 100 g cost ₹9,949.44 for 2 kg (₹4.97 a gram). Four flat-priced oils at 500 g cost ₹10,572.80 for 2 kg; the same four oils bought as twenty 100 g bottles cost ₹10,569.80, so the 500 g route is actually ₹3.00 dearer. Concentrating on fewer scents saves almost nothing on those oils. Bulk does pay on a minority of oils: Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut, Cucumber Green Tea and Fresh Strawberries at 500 g cost ₹7,115.00 for 2 kg, against ₹8,329.20 as 100 g bottles. So the answer is a split. Put your likely best-sellers at 500 g where the oil has a real break, keep the rest of the range at 100 g, and spend a small share on 15 g testers for next season. Our recommended split is three leads at 500 g, six range scents at 100 g and eight testers, ₹9,404.70 for 131.25 production candles.
One line: breadth is almost free above 50 g; bulk only pays on oils whose per-gram price keeps falling.
The biggest single saving in this guide: Honeydew Melon at 500 g is ₹3.40 a gram, against ₹4.35 at 100 g. Five 100 g bottles would cost ₹2,177.10; one 500 g costs ₹1,699.20. If a fresh fruit scent is in your plan, this is the one to buy big.
Buy Honeydew Melon 500 g

2 kg of oil, five ways

Fix the quantity and the question answers itself. Take 2 kg of fragrance oil, which scents 125 candles of 200 g at 8%, and price it as many small bottles or a few big ones.

The table below buys the same 2 kg of oil in different shapes. The breadth options use a pool of twenty oils across fresh, fruity, floral, woody and gourmand profiles. The bulk options use four or two of them. The first row is not something you can buy; it prices 2 kg at the 15 g rate to show what the tester premium would cost at scale.

2 kg of oil · 125 candles of 200 g at 8% · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
The same 2 kg bought as breadth or as bulk
Shape Scents Candles per scent Cost of 2 kg Avg ₹/g Notes
2 kg at 15 g rates (not buyable as 133 testers) 20 — ₹13,625.47 ₹6.81 Shown to price the tester premium only
20 scents × 2 × 50 g 20 6.25 ₹10,555.30 ₹5.28 Breadth with the 50 g step
20 scents × 100 g 20 6.25 ₹9,949.44 ₹4.97 Maximum breadth at production rates
4 scents × 500 g, flat-priced oils 4 31.25 ₹10,572.80 ₹5.29 Blue Ocean, Apple Cinnamon, Autumn, Palo Santo
4 scents × 500 g, oils with a real break 4 31.25 ₹7,115.00 ₹3.56 Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut, Cucumber Green Tea, Fresh Strawberries
2 scents × 1 kg 2 62.50 ₹7,362.40 ₹3.68 Honeydew Melon, Mango Coconut

Three findings come out of this table. First, the tester premium is large: 2 kg at 15 g rates would cost ₹13,625.47, ₹3,676.03 more than the same scents at 100 g. Second, four flat-priced oils at 500 g cost ₹10,572.80, and the same four oils as 100 g bottles cost ₹10,569.80. On 2 kg of oil the bigger packs are ₹3.00 dearer, not cheaper. (The 500 g row costs more than the 20-scent row only because those four oils are dearer than the pool average, not because breadth is cheaper.) The price of breadth, once you are at 100 g, is close to zero. Third, bulk does win when you pick oils whose price keeps falling: four break oils at 500 g save ₹2,834.44 against the 20-scent option, and ₹1,214.20 against buying those same four oils as 100 g bottles.

The 50 g row is the one most people miss
Buying the 20 scents as two 50 g bottles each costs ₹10,555.30, about ₹605.86 more than 100 g. For flat oils like Blue Ocean (₹4.94/g at 50 g) the 50 g is effectively the 100 g rate. For value oils like Orchard Pear (₹4.80 against ₹3.80) it is not. Where you want a small quantity of a scent, 50 g of a flat-priced oil is nearly free of penalty; 50 g of a value oil is not.

The per-gram ladder that decides it

Twelve oils from the pool, priced per gram at every size. The last two columns are the ones to read: how much more the 15 g costs than the 100 g, and how much the 500 g saves on the 100 g.

Across all twenty oils in the pool, the median 15 g premium is 31.3%, above the catalogue-wide median of 23.1% because this pool is weighted to value oils, where the 100 g is cheap. Between 100 g and 500 g, 8 of the 20 are within 1% per gram and 7 save 5% or more. That is the whole decision in two numbers: small bottles cost more per gram, big bottles mostly do not cost less.

The catalogue as a whole says the same thing. Of 91 oils listing both 100 g and 1 kg, 52 are within 1% per gram and 24 save 5% or more. The biggest breaks are Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%) and Mango Coconut (20.7%). A few kilos cost fractionally more per gram than their 100 g, such as Love Spell. Candle fragrance oil price per kg covers the kilo view oil by oil.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A supplier would normally tell you to buy fewer scents in bigger packs because it raises the order value per product. On our listed prices, for most oils, a 500 g or 1 kg does not buy a lower rate than the 100 g. You can build a twenty-scent collection at 100 g for almost the same money per gram as a four-scent one at 500 g. Buy big only on the oils where the price per gram actually falls, and only when you expect to sell through it.
The CSI principle
Pay for breadth with information, not with the tester premium.
Breadth is cheap at 100 g and expensive at 15 g. Test in 15 g only when you genuinely do not know a scent. Once you do, buy it at the size where its price per gram stops falling, which for most oils is 50 g or 100 g.

What breadth and bulk really cost

If the price per gram is nearly the same, the real costs are elsewhere: stock that does not sell, and scents that run out.

The cost of breadth is dead stock. Suppose five of twenty scents at 100 g never sell. That is about ₹2,487.36 of oil at the pool's average 100 g price, a quarter of the spend, sitting on a shelf. Each bottle is small, so you can still use leftovers in blends, wax melts or testers, but it is money you did not need to spend. The cost of bulk is concentration. If one of four 500 g bottles turns out to be the scent nobody buys, ₹1,770.00 (Fresh Strawberries at 500 g) is stuck, and your shelf has only three scents left.

Fits Markets, gifting, brand discovery A proven range, wholesale, corporate

Neither extreme suits most brands. Twenty scents is a lot of labels and a lot of reorder points for a new maker; four scents is thin on a market stall or a gifting page. Most small brands carry eight to twelve scents, with two or three doing most of the selling. That shape is what the recommended split buys. Which fragrance oils to always keep in stock and avoiding stockouts on best-sellers cover the running side once you know your leaders.

The mistake that looks like strategy. Buying a kilo each of the two most exciting scents because "bulk is cheaper". Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut at 1 kg cost ₹7,362.40, and they happen to be two of the oils where the kilo does save. Pick two flat-priced oils instead, say Bergamot Amber and Palo Santo, and the kilos save you only ₹163.00 against twenty 100 g bottles, while tying up ₹11,455.00 in two unproven scents.

The recommended ₹10,000 split

The split has three layers. Leads: three scents you expect to sell most, bought at 500 g, and chosen from oils where 500 g genuinely costs less per gram. Range: six scents at 100 g, the first size where their price flattens. Testers: eight 15 g bottles of scents you want to try for the next season, a deliberate 9.2% of the spend.

The range costs ₹2,729.64 for six scents. The testers cost ₹869.86. ₹595.30 stays unspent for a restock or a price change. In total the order pours 131.25 candles of 200 g at 8%, plus eight test candles.

Swap leads for your brand, keep the rule
If your leads are gourmand rather than fruity, look for gourmand oils with a real 500 g break, such as Cinnamon Vanilla (₹4.84 → ₹4.60) or Roasted Coconut, whose 1 kg is ₹4.00 against ₹4.95 at 100 g. If the lead you want is flat-priced, buy it at 100 g in multiples; the rate is the same and the risk is lower.
1
List every scent you are consideringWrite down 15 to 20. Mark each as known (you have used it or smelled it in wax) or unknown.
2
Send the unknowns to 15 gEvery unknown scent gets a 15 g tester, and only a 15 g tester. If an oil starts at 50 g, that is its tester. Testing 20 fragrances before launch has the burn protocol.
3
Pick two or three likely leaders from the knownsChoose on reasoning: what your customer buys, the season, gifting. Do not choose on excitement.
4
Check each leader's 100 g vs 500 g price per gramIf the 500 g is at least 5% cheaper per gram, buy the 500 g. If it is flat, buy 100 g now and reorder. The ladder table above shows how to read it.
5
Buy the remaining knowns at 100 gOr at 50 g where the oil is flat-priced and you only want three candles' worth.
6
Hold back 5–10% of the budgetFor a restock of the first scent that sells out. A winner that runs out in week three costs more in lost sales than any per-gram saving.

Remember the rest of the candle. 131.25 candles need 24.15 kg of wax at 184 g each: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo or ₹5,999.00 for 10 kg, CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg, and Natural Soy Pearl Wax is ₹2,124.00 for 5 kg. Wicks: Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 ₹590.00 for 100. Wax, like most oils, is priced flat per kilo, except Soy Pearl, which is 5.6% cheaper at 5 kg.

A quick rule set, for when you are standing in front of the product page. 15 g: only for scents you have not tested. 50 g: for flat-priced oils where you want a small run, or where 50 g is the smallest size listed. 100 g: the default production size for any scent you are still learning about. 500 g / 1 kg: for proven sellers, and first for oils where the per-gram price genuinely falls. Above 1 kg per oil, ask for a quote on WhatsApp; the listed store tops out at 1 kg.

Twenty scents at 100 g cost about the same per gram as four at 500 g. Choose breadth or bulk for your customers, not for the price.

For a smaller first budget, the ₹5,000 plan applies the same logic with fewer lines. If you already know your ten launch scents and want quantities per scent, the 10-fragrance launch guide sets tiers and reorder triggers. And the 10 fragrance oil combo and the 20 fragrance oil combo show how to build a scent set without a pre-made combo, which CSI does not sell.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would suit us to say bulk is always cheaper. Our listed prices say that is true only for a minority of oils, so this page shows the flat ladders alongside the real breaks, and recommends buying big only where the per-gram price falls.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every size in the recommended order was in stock on the pull date. Per-gram figures, premiums, savings and candle counts are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 200 g candle, 8% load, the 20-oil pool and the dead-stock examples are working assumptions for comparison, not a sales forecast. For quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Is buying fragrance oil in bulk cheaper per gram?
On CSI's listed prices, usually not above 100 g. For 52 of 91 oils the 1 kg is within 1% per gram of the 100 g. Twenty-four oils save 5% or more at 1 kg, led by Citronella, Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut. The dependable step is 15 g → 100 g.
How many fragrances should a new candle brand launch with?
Most small brands do well with eight to twelve, with two or three leads. The ₹10,000 split on this page gives nine production scents and eight testers for the next round, ₹9,404.70 in total.
Should I buy 50 g or 100 g fragrance oil?
For flat-priced oils it barely matters per gram (Blue Ocean ₹4.94 vs ₹4.95). For value oils the 100 g is cheaper (Orchard Pear ₹4.80 vs ₹3.80). Buy 50 g when you only want three candles' worth of a flat-priced oil.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The method — compare per-gram prices across sizes, then buy big only where the price falls — applies to any supplier's fragrance oils.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the breadth-versus-bulk comparison set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Candle counts assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax). "2 kg at 15 g rates" is a hypothetical used only to price the tester premium. Dead-stock figures assume, for illustration, that 5 of 20 scents (or 1 of 4) do not sell; they are not a forecast. Pool statistics (median 15 g premium 31.3%, 8 of 20 flat between 100 g and 500 g, 7 saving 5% or more) are computed on the 20 oils named above.
