Which Fragrances to Buy · Core Stock
Core stock is the handful of oils you never want to run out of. Choosing them is not about which scents you like best. It is four tests: does it sell steadily, can you buy it deep, what does holding the kilo cost you, and how many products does it serve?
₹5,967.36
a year saved on Mango Coconut by buying 1 kg instead of 100 g, at 30 candles a month — the largest of the core six · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oils should I always keep in stock? The oils that pass four tests: they sell steadily in your records, they are in stock at 1 kg, holding the kilo does not cost you extra, and they serve more than one product. On CSI's catalogue a typical core six is Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Jasmine, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Mango Coconut.

What does stock depth mean for fragrance oil? Whether the oil is available at the large sizes you will need, today. On 24 September 2026, 73 of the 92 oils that list a 1 kg had it in stock, and all of the top 18 in the best-selling sort were in stock at every size. See the stock-depth matrix.

Is it cheaper to keep fragrance oil in 1 kg? Only for some oils. Mango Coconut's 1 kg is 20.7% cheaper per gram than its 100 g; Sandalwood's and Woody Oud's are priced the same. At 30 candles a month, the kilo saves ₹5,967.36 a year on Mango Coconut and almost nothing on Sandalwood.

How many fragrances should be core stock? Usually four to six. More than that ties up cash in slow-moving kilos; fewer leaves you reordering your best sellers in 100 g every few days. How Much Fragrance Oil Inventory Should a Candle Manufacturer Keep? covers inventory size in detail.
The short answer
Four tests: Steady seller (your records) · stock depth (in stock at 1 kg today) · holding cost (does the kilo save or cost per gram?) · cross-range use (how many products use it).
Stock depth: 73 of 92 oils listing a 1 kg had it in stock on 24 September 2026. The first gaps in the best-selling sort appear at positions 19 (Chocolate Fudge, 100 g) and 21 (Vetiver, 1 kg).
Where the kilo pays: 24 oils show a 1 kg saving of 5% or more per gram over 100 g, led by Citronella 62.3%, Honeydew Melon 22.0% and Mango Coconut 20.7%. For 52 of 91 it is within 1%.

A stock-depth matrix is a quick way to see which oils can be held deep. Read across a row: five black squares mean you can buy the oil at any size today. Read the last column: a high number means the kilo also saves money, a zero means it only buys security. Stock changes daily, so this is a snapshot of 24 September 2026.
Straight answer
Which candle fragrance oils should I always keep in stock?
Keep in stock the oils that pass four tests. One: they sell steadily across the year in your own sales records — not just at Diwali. Two: they have stock depth, meaning the supplier has them at 1 kg when you need to reorder; on 24 September 2026, 73 of the 92 CSI oils that list a 1 kg had it in stock, and every oil in the top 18 of the best-selling sort was in stock at all five sizes. Three: holding the kilo does not cost you extra. For 24 oils the 1 kg is at least 5% cheaper per gram than the 100 g; for most it is the same price, so the kilo buys security, not savings. Four: they serve several products. A typical core six on CSI's catalogue is Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Jasmine, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Mango Coconut, costing ₹22,982.00 at 1 kg. Everything else stays at 100 g until your sales promote it.
One line: steady seller, deep stock, cheap to hold, many uses — all four, or it stays at 100 g.
Eucalyptus Spearmint at ₹3,068.00 a kilo is one of the clearest core-stock buys in the catalogue: 14th in the best-selling sort, in stock at every size, and 13.3% cheaper per gram at 1 kg than at 100 g. It puts ₹49.09 of oil into a 200 g candle at the kilo rate.

Four tests for core stock

Running out of your best seller costs you a sale. Sitting on a kilo of a slow seller costs you cash. Core stock is the list that avoids both.

"Always keep in stock" means holding an oil in depth — usually a 500 g or 1 kg pack — so a busy week or a bulk order never finds the shelf empty. That is worth doing for a few oils and wasteful for the rest. The four tests below decide which is which. Test one uses your own data. Tests two and three use the supplier's price list and stock status, which is where CSI's catalogue comes in. Test four uses your product range.

Core-stock tests · apply to every candidate
Four questions before an oil earns a kilo
Test The question Where the answer comes from Pass if
1 · Steady seller Does it sell every month, not just in one season? Your own sales records It sold in most of the last six months
2 · Stock depth Can I buy it at 1 kg (or 500 g) today? The product page on the day 1 kg in stock; ideally all sizes
3 · Holding cost Does the kilo cost the same, less or more per gram than 100 g? The price ladder Kilo is cheaper or equal per gram
4 · Cross-range use How many of my products use it? Your range Two or more (candle + wax melt, two jar sizes…)

Test one cannot be answered by a supplier. CSI publishes no unit sales, and even the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort — the only popularity signal we have — reflects what candle makers buy from us, not what your customers buy from you. Use the sort to choose which oils to try; use your own sales to choose which to hold. If you are too new to have six months of records, Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy to Start a Candle Business? and Best 5 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business are the better starting points, and core stock can wait.

A seasonal best seller is not core stock
A scent that sells heavily in October and not at all in April is a seasonal buy, not a core one. Buy it deep before its season and let it run down. Holding it all year ties up cash for eight months. Best 20 Fragrance Oils for a Candle Business sets out a seasonal rotation.

Stock depth, read from the catalogue

Stock depth is the practical test. An oil you would like to hold in depth is only core stock if you can actually buy it deep. On 24 September 2026, 92 of the 93 oils listed a 1 kg and 73 had it in stock. The other 19 were out of stock at 1 kg that day, and one (Mogra) lists no 1 kg at all. The matrix above shows the top 20 of the sort; the table below lists every oil whose 1 kg was out of stock on the pull date.

Frankincense and Tonka (1 kg) 79 none
Wild Berry 80 50 g · 100 g
Acqua Di Gio Inspired 83 none
Spicy Raspberry (second listing) 87 50 g

Two patterns stand out. Most of the list is inspired-by and specialist oils — Freshwater, Into The Night, Butterfly, the Baccarat Rouge 540 and Acqua Di Gio inspired oils — which also sit in the highest price bands. And several are simply sold out at every size, such as Rajnigandha and Spiced Rum. An oil in this table can still be in your range; it should not be one you promise a client in kilo quantities without a WhatsApp check first. Stock changes daily, so re-check on the day.

Core stock built on an oil you cannot restock. A maker makes Vetiver a signature scent, holds 500 g, and discovers the 1 kg is out of stock when the bulk order arrives. The fix is not to avoid Vetiver; it is to hold its 500 g as your deep stock and ask for a restock date before you commit to a large order.

What holding the kilo costs

For most oils the kilo is not a discount. It is insurance. Know which you are buying.

On CSI's listed prices, the 1 kg is within 1% of the 100 g per gram for 52 of the 91 oils that list both. Only 24 show a saving of 5% or more. For core stock this matters: holding a kilo ties up cash either way, but for some oils that cash earns a return and for others it does not. The table shows a year of use at an illustrative 30 candles a month (480 g of oil a month, 5.76 kg a year) for each of the core six, bought at 100 g rates and at 1 kg rates.

A year of use at 30 candles a month · 5.76 kg of oil · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Year-of-use cost: 100 g rate against 1 kg rate
Oil ₹/g at 100 g ₹/g at 1 kg 1 kg saving Year at 100 g rate Year at 1 kg rate Saved a year 1 kg lasts
Lavender ₹5.40 ₹5.22 3.3% ₹31,104.00 ₹30,072.96 ₹1,031.04 2.1 months
British Rose ₹3.42 ₹3.07 10.3% ₹19,710.72 ₹17,671.68 ₹2,039.04 2.1 months
Roasted Coffee ₹3.90 ₹3.74 4.2% ₹22,464.00 ₹21,530.88 ₹933.12 2.1 months
Jasmine ₹4.30 ₹3.92 8.8% ₹24,768.00 ₹22,596.48 ₹2,171.52 2.1 months
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3.54 ₹3.07 13.3% ₹20,390.40 ₹17,671.68 ₹2,718.72 2.1 months
Mango Coconut ₹5.00 ₹3.96 20.7% ₹28,800.00 ₹22,832.64 ₹5,967.36 2.1 months
Core six ₹1,47,237.12 ₹1,32,376.32 ₹14,860.80

At this usage a kilo lasts just over two months, which is a comfortable reorder rhythm. The savings are uneven. Mango Coconut and Eucalyptus Spearmint save the most, because their kilo discounts are the deepest. Lavender and Roasted Coffee, with discounts of 3.3% and 4.2%, save about ₹900 to ₹1,000 a year each. For an oil priced flat — Sandalwood, Woody Oud, Gilli Mitti, Blue Ocean — the saving would be nil, and the only reason to hold the kilo is to avoid running out. The 30-candle rate is an assumption; scale the year column to your own sales.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more kilos if every oil were cheaper by the kilo. Most are not. If a scent sells ten candles a month, a kilo of it lasts over six months and saves you little or nothing on most oils. Keep that scent at 100 g and reorder more often. The kilo is for oils that pass all four tests, not for every oil you like. When a core oil runs to several kilos a month, My Candle Business Uses 5–10 Kg of Fragrance Oil Every Month — Should I Negotiate Wholesale Pricing or Buy Larger Packs? covers whether to negotiate or buy bigger, and I Need Fragrance Oils That I Can Test in 100 g and Later Reorder in 1 Kg, 5 Kg and Larger Quantities — How Should I Choose a Supplier? covers choosing a supplier you can scale with.

An example core six

Here is how the tests play out on CSI's catalogue for a maker whose records show steady sales across fresh, floral, gourmand and fruity scents. The first test is yours to apply; the example assumes these six pass it. All six were in stock at every size on the pull date, and every one of them is cheaper per gram at 1 kg than at 100 g.

Example core six · 1 kg · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Six oils that pass tests two, three and four
Oil Sort position Family 1 kg price 1 kg saving over 100 g Oil per candle at 1 kg Typical uses
Lavender 1 Fresh ₹5,221.00 3.3% ₹83.54 Candles, wax melts, sachets
British Rose 2 Floral ₹3,068.00 10.3% ₹49.09 Gift candles, wedding favours
Roasted Coffee 3 Gourmand ₹3,738.00 4.2% ₹59.81 Kitchen and café candles
Jasmine 10 Floral ₹3,923.00 8.8% ₹62.77 Festive, pooja, gifting
Eucalyptus Spearmint 14 Fresh ₹3,068.00 13.3% ₹49.09 Bathroom, spa, wellness
Mango Coconut 20 Fruity ₹3,964.00 20.7% ₹63.42 Summer, kids' and fun ranges

Notice what is not here. Sandalwood and Dark Vanilla sit higher in the best-selling sort than several of these, and many makers sell them steadily. They would pass tests one, two and four. They are left out of this example because the kilo saves little on either — Sandalwood is priced flat — so a maker could hold them at 500 g or 100 g with no penalty. If your records say Sandalwood is your top seller, hold its kilo anyway: security is a good enough reason when the scent is essential.

Oils to keep small

The mirror image of core stock is the list of oils you deliberately keep at 100 g or 50 g. They are not worse oils. They fail one of the tests: seasonal rather than steady, priced flat so the kilo buys nothing, too expensive to tie up in depth, or used in only one product.

Keep at 100 g or less · reasons from the price list and stock status
Good oils, small stock
Oil Test it fails Why Hold at
Sandalwood 3 · holding cost Flat at ₹5.03 a gram from 100 g to 1 kg 100 g or 500 g, unless it is your top seller
Gilli Mitti 3 · holding cost Flat at ₹8.96 a gram from 50 g; Premium tier ties up ₹8,960.00 a kilo 100 g
Blue Ocean 3 · holding cost ₹4.95 at 100 g, ₹4.96 at 1 kg 100 g
Chocolate Fudge 2 · stock depth 100 g out of stock on the pull date 50 g or 500 g
Vetiver 2 · stock depth 1 kg out of stock on the pull date 500 g
Pumpkin Spice 1 · steady seller Seasonal scent Buy deep before winter, let it run down

Keeping these small is not a risk if you reorder on time. How to set reorder levels and how to avoid running out of best-selling fragrances cover the timing; How Much Fragrance Oil Inventory Should a Candle Manufacturer Keep? covers how much inventory in total a manufacturer should hold, and How to Buy Candle Fragrance Oils in Bulk Every Month sets out a monthly buying routine.

The core-stock order

1
Pull six months of your own sales by scentList every scent and the months it sold in. Anything that sold in most months is a candidate. This is test one, and only you can run it.
2
Check each candidate's 1 kg on the dayOpen the product page. If the 1 kg is out of stock, the 500 g becomes your depth size, or the oil waits.
3
Read the ladderCompare the 1 kg and 100 g per gram. A saving of 5% or more is a bonus; a flat ladder means the kilo is for security only.
4
Count the products each oil servesAn oil used in candles, wax melts and a second jar size empties faster and justifies more depth.
5
Buy the core in 1 kg, the rest in 100 gThe example core six costs ₹22,982.00 at 1 kg and, at 30 candles a month each, lasts about two months.
6
Review every quarterPromote a 100 g scent that has sold steadily for six months; demote a core scent that has slowed. Core stock is a list you keep, not one you set once.

Wax here is bought as seven 5 kg packs rather than 10 kg packs, because on CSI's listing two 5 kg packs (₹5,990.00) cost ₹9.00 less than one 10 kg (₹5,999.00). The difference is small; it is there, so we say so. At 180 candles a month, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo would cut the wax line noticeably; test it with your core oils before switching.

Before Diwali on 8 November 2026, core stock is what keeps a busy October from turning into a stockout. Send your core list on WhatsApp and we will confirm 1 kg stock for each oil and quote the order with a GST invoice. The CSI principle
Hold deep what sells steadily and costs no more to hold.
Core stock is a short list. An oil earns a place on it by selling every month in your records, being available at 1 kg when you reorder, and costing the same or less per gram at the kilo. Everything else is bought as it is needed.
The kilo of a flat-priced oil is insurance. The kilo of a discounted oil is insurance that pays you back. Know which one you are buying.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Advice to hold every scent at 1 kg would sell more oil. This page recommends holding only four to six, names the oils where the kilo saves nothing, and lists the oils that were out of stock at 1 kg on the pull date.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026, and stock depth is the in-stock status of each size on that date. The best-selling order is the Fragrance Oils collection's sort as pulled; CSI publishes no unit sales. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-gram, saving and year-of-use figures are plain arithmetic on the listed prices.

The 30-candles-a-month usage, the four tests and the example core six are working assumptions for illustration. Your own sales decide your core. For 1 kg stock checks, quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oils should a candle business always have in stock?
The four to six that sell steadily in your own records, are in stock at 1 kg, cost the same or less per gram at the kilo, and serve several products. A typical example on CSI's catalogue is Lavender, British Rose, Roasted Coffee, Jasmine, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Mango Coconut.
How do I know if a fragrance oil is in stock in 1 kg?
Check the product page on the day you order, or ask on WhatsApp. On 24 September 2026, 73 of the 92 CSI oils that list a 1 kg had it in stock. Stock changes daily.
Which fragrance oils are cheapest to buy in bulk?
By saving per gram at 1 kg over 100 g on CSI's listed prices: Citronella 62.3%, Honeydew Melon 22.0%, Mango Coconut 20.7%, Verbena 20.0% and Roasted Coconut 19.2%. By lowest 1 kg price: Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832.00.
Should I stock seasonal fragrances all year?
No. Buy them deep before their season and let them run down. A Diwali or winter scent held all year ties up cash for months. Best 20 Fragrance Oils for a Candle Business sets out a seasonal rotation.
How long does 1 kg of fragrance oil last?
At 8% in 200 g candles, 1 kg scents 62.5 candles. At 30 candles a month, that is about 2.1 months; at 10 a month, over six months. How Many Kg of Fragrance Oil Does a Small Candle Manufacturer Need Per Month? covers monthly quantities.
What if my best-selling fragrance is out of stock in 1 kg?
Hold its 500 g as your depth size if that is in stock, and ask CSI on WhatsApp for a restock date before you take a large order. Vetiver, for example, had its 500 g in stock and its 1 kg out on the pull date.
Four tests, then the kilo
Hold four to six oils deep. Keep the rest at 100 g. Check 1 kg stock before you promise a bulk order.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-gram prices are pack price ÷ grams. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 / kg (₹110.22), one Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and one White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), a base of ₹186.92 before oil, unless a table states otherwise. They exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. "Best-selling" and sort positions refer only to the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort order as pulled on 24 September 2026; CSI publishes no unit sales, and none are implied. Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Year-of-use figures assume 30 candles a month per scent (480 g of oil a month, 5.76 kg a year) priced at the 100 g and 1 kg per-gram rates. 1 kg savings of 5% or more are as published from the same pull (for example Citronella 62.3%, Honeydew Melon 22.0%, Mango Coconut 20.7%, Verbena 20.0%, Roasted Coconut 19.2%, Eucalyptus Spearmint 13.3%, British Rose 10.3%, Jasmine 8.8%, Fresh Strawberries 6.3%); smaller savings are computed from the listed per-gram prices. The core-stock order assumes 180 candles in a month (33.12 kg of wax bought as 35 kg). Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
