CSI Wick Buying · Fragrance Blends
Two approved oils do not make an approved blend. The finished 50:50 gets its own nine-candle ladder, and this month the only awkward line on the order is a 500 g bottle of Sandalwood.
₹3,303.40
Vanilla Bean 100 g + Sandalwood 500 g: the oil for a nine-candle 50:50 blend ladder · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Does a Vanilla + Sandalwood blend need its own wick test? Yes. A blend is a new fuel, not the average of two approved candles. Your component tests tell you which rungs are worth buying; only the blend, burned to the bottom on three candles, tells you the wick.

What does the ladder need? Nine 200 g candles at 8% (worked example: your 8 cm inside jar), three each on Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided. 50:50 is 8 g + 8 g per candle, so 72 g of each oil for the ladder, 96 g with a three-candle re-pour.

What is the catch? Sandalwood 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026. The smallest bottle that covers 72 g is the 500 g at ₹2,513.40. It costs the same per gram (₹5.03) as the 100 g would; after the ladder 428 g remains, worth ₹2,151.47 at the price paid: 53 more blend candles if it passes.

So what do I order? Vanilla Bean 100 g + Sandalwood 500 g (₹3,303.40), plus C1 20, C2 10 and Cotton Braided 10 (₹332.40) if your component tests left none. Production quantities only after all three candles of one rung pass a full-life burn.
The short answer
Test the blend: yes, on its own ladder. Component results narrow the rungs; they do not approve the blend.
Grams: 50:50 at 8% in a 200 g candle = 8 g Vanilla Bean + 8 g Sandalwood. Nine candles: 72 g of each; twelve with a re-pour: 96 g of each.
The stock problem: Sandalwood comes in 500 g (₹2,513.40) or 1 kg on 1 October 2026. Buy the 500 g only if the blend is meant for production; otherwise wait for the small sizes. A different sandal oil tests a different blend.
Approve: all three candles of one rung to about 1 cm left. The approval covers this blend at this ratio and load, nothing else.
The ladder needs 72 g of each oil. Sandalwood starts at 500 g. Bottle sizes drawn to scale, 1 px per gram. Nine 200 g candles at 8%, 50:50 = 72 g of each oil; 96 g with a 3-candle re-pour. CSI live prices and stock, 1 October 2026. Vanilla Bean 500 g and both 1 kg bottles not drawn (all in stock). 72 g ladder 96 g with re-pour 0 g 100 g 200 g 300 g 400 g 500 g Vanilla Bean every size in stock ₹7.90 a gram at 100 g 15 g ₹130.00 50 g ₹410.00 100 g ₹790.00 · buy: 4 g left after re-pour Sandalwood 15, 50, 100 g out of stock ₹5.03 a gram at 500 g 15 g ₹93.22 · out of stock 50 g ₹271.40 · out of stock 100 g ₹502.68 · out of stock 500 g ₹2,513.40 · the smallest in-stock bottle What the oil order leaves behind Vanilla Bean 100 g ₹790.00: 28 g after the ladder, 4 g after a re-pour. Sandalwood 500 g ₹2,513.40: 428 g after the ladder, worth ₹2,151.47 at the price paid: 53 more blend candles. The 500 g costs the same per gram as the out-of-stock 100 g (₹5.03): the extra is cash today, not a premium. Worked example; 200 g fill and 50:50 ratio are labelled assumptions. Excludes jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
Each bar is a real CSI bottle size at true length; dashed bars are out of stock on 1 October 2026. Vanilla Bean's 100 g clears both lines with a little to spare. Sandalwood has nothing in stock below 500 g, so a 72 g test buys a 500 g bottle. That is a cash problem, not a price problem: per gram it matches the 100 g, and what is left is production oil if the blend passes.
Straight answer
I'm blending Vanilla and Sandalwood fragrance oils. Should the finished blend receive its own wick test rather than relying on tests of each fragrance separately?
Yes. Test the finished blend as its own candle, on its own ladder. A wick approved for straight vanilla and another approved for straight sandalwood tell you where to look; they do not tell you where the blend lands, because the blend is a new fuel with its own share of heavy and light material, and the two oils may not even share a wick on their own. In the worked example (your 8 cm inside jar, 200 g candles, 8% of total weight, 50:50, CSI 464), pour nine candles, three each on Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided: 72 g each of Vanilla Bean and Sandalwood. The purchasing catch is stock: Sandalwood's 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on 1 October 2026, so the test needs the 500 g (₹2,513.40). Buy it if the blend is headed for production: it costs the same per gram as the 100 g, and the 428 g left after the ladder becomes 53 more blend candles once a wick passes. If you are only exploring, wait for the small sizes. Approve a wick only when all three candles of one rung pass a full-life burn.
One line: a blend is a new candle; the only expensive part of testing it this month is a 500 g bottle of Sandalwood.
The blend's oil order: Vanilla Bean 100 g (₹790.00) + Sandalwood 500 g (₹2,513.40) = ₹3,303.40. Both in stock on 1 October 2026; Sandalwood's 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are not. Wicks from your component tests, or C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 (₹332.40).
Sandalwood 500 g — ₹2,513.40

Why a blend is a new fuel, not an average

Two approvals do not add up to a third. They mark out where to start looking.

A wick result belongs to one system: jar, wax, oil, load, fill. Change the oil and the system changes, and a blend is a changed oil even when both halves have passed alone. Heavier, vanilla-rich and resinous materials are commonly linked to needing more wick or building more carbon; lighter materials often burn more easily. A 50:50 blend carries half the vanilla of a straight vanilla candle and half the sandalwood of a straight sandalwood one, so it is reasonable to expect it to land near one of its components' wicks. Reasonable is not proven: two oils can also interact in the pool in ways neither shows alone, and CSI has no measured wick data for any oil or blend.

So the component tests are useful in one specific way: they tell you which rungs to buy. If straight Vanilla Bean passed on Cotton Braided in your jar and straight Sandalwood on C2 (a worked example, not a prediction), the blend most plausibly sits on C2 or Cotton Braided, and C1 goes in as the low anchor so the bracket can close from below. If you have no component results, the same three rungs are still the right first buy for an 8 cm jar, for the reasons the 8 cm vanilla hub sets out.

What each kind of evidence can do for the blend
Our judgement, labelled · the blend's own full-life result is the only approval
Evidence you hold What it tells you What it cannot tell you Purchase consequence
Both oils approved alone, on different wicks The blend's likely zone: on or around those two wicks Which of them, or whether the blend needs something else Full three-rung ladder; the two component wicks plus the anchor
Both oils approved alone, on the same wick A strong starting point That the blend matches; the mixture is still new A two-arm confirm (that wick + the rung toward the heavier oil, 3 each) may do; a ladder if you want the bracket closed
One oil tested, one not Half the picture Where sandalwood alone lands in your jar Full ladder on the blend; skip a separate component test unless you will sell it straight
Neither tested Nothing specific — Full ladder on the blend; component tests are optional unless you sell the components
Mistake: picking "the wick in between" from two component results and going to production. Why it fails: CSI's tabbed rungs are C1, C2 and Cotton Braided with nothing between them, and a blend is not obliged to sit where you average it. Fix: let the blend run the ladder. If you only ever sell the blend, you can skip separate component tests entirely: they cost candles and prove nothing the blend ladder will not.

How to build the blend itself (ratios, what each component contributes, how far to push the load) is formulation work and outside this page; here the ratio is fixed at 50:50 and the question is purely what to buy to wick it. A later change to 70:30 is a separate, smaller confirm: the ratio-change post.

The 50:50 ladder: nine candles, one pot

Blend once, pour nine. If each jar gets its own little mix, you are testing nine blends.

The worked example: your 8 cm inside jar (CSI lists no jar 8 cm across), a 200 g fill at 8% of total candle weight, so each candle is 16 g of blend + 184 g of wax, and the blend is 8 g of each oil. The load applies to the combined blend, never to each component. Both oil pages say up to 10% for soy and CSI 464 says up to 10%, so 10% is the blend's planning ceiling and 8% sits inside it.

Of that, the materials the nine candles actually consume are ₹1,853.00: Vanilla Bean ₹568.80, Sandalwood ₹361.93, wax ₹840.25 and nine wicks ₹82.02. One test candle costs ₹202.68 on C1, ₹206.22 on C2 and ₹208.78 on Cotton Braided (oil ₹63.20 + ₹40.21, wax ₹93.36): excluding your jar, labour, freight, packaging and GST. The wick is the smallest line on every candle.

1
Pre-mix the blend by weightWeigh 72 g of each oil into one clean bottle on the scale and shake well: 144 g of blend. Pre-mixing once means every candle carries the same ratio; dosing two oils jar by jar multiplies weighing error.
2
Melt one batch of wax1,656 g of CSI 464. Its page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; if your jar states a lower hot-pour limit, the lower figure governs.
3
Add the whole 144 g, mix, pour nineOne addition, one thorough stir, nine jars from the same pot. Label C1-a to CB-c on the base.
4
Centre every wick and cure togetherBoth oil pages state a 48–72 hour cure for soy; many makers wait about a week before judging throw. Same shelf, same days.
5
Burn 3–4 hour sessions in still airAbout an hour per 2.5 cm of width is a very rough rule of thumb, so an 8 cm pool needs sessions of that length. Trim to about 5–6 mm, burn within sight, cool fully between sessions.
6
Keep the re-pour oil sealed28 g of Vanilla Bean and the Sandalwood stay capped and labelled with the date: if one rung splits 2 to 1, you re-pour three of it from the same lots. The wax is the one line that does not stretch: the 344 g left from two bags is short of three more candles, so a re-pour needs another 500 g bag (₹260.00).
Sandalwood at 8 cm, briefly
Straight sandalwood at exactly 8 cm, where the house wick reaches the edge with lavender but not with sandalwood, is a known border case with its own bracket in the 8 cm lavender-vs-sandalwood post. Straight vanilla's early tunnel at 8 cm is the 8 cm vanilla catch-up post. Read them for the diagnosis; this page is about buying for the blend.

The stock problem: Sandalwood in 500 g or nothing

Nine candles need 72 g of Sandalwood. The smallest bottle you can buy on 1 October 2026 holds 500 g.

On 1 October 2026, Sandalwood Fragrance Oil's 15 g (₹93.22), 50 g (₹271.40) and 100 g (₹502.68) are all out of stock; the 500 g (₹2,513.40) and 1 kg (₹5,026.80) are in. We cannot tell you when the small sizes return: ask on WhatsApp. Here are the real options, with what each one actually tests.

Ways to get 72 g of a sandal oil for the ladder · 1 October 2026

Sandalwood 500 g ₹2,513.40 ₹5.03 up to 10% for soy Your actual blend, ready for production
Wait for Sandalwood 50 g / 100 g nothing yet ₹5.03 at 100 g when listed up to 10% for soy The same blend, later; no date published
Sacred Sandal Ember 500 g (100 g and 1 kg out of stock) ₹3,999.00 ₹8.00 none in the text we captured A different blend: sandalwood with incense smoke and resins
CSI's perfume-grade, brand-inspired sandal listing, 2 × 50 g or 100 g ₹884.00 or ₹885.00 ₹8.84–₹8.85 none stated; a perfume-grade listing A different blend: saffron, cardamom, rose, amber and vanilla around sandalwood

The two alternatives are not cheaper ways to run the same test. They are different oils, priced higher per gram (₹575.86 and ₹637.20 for 72 g, against ₹361.93 of Sandalwood), with no candle load stated in the text we captured, and their notes are not single-note sandalwood. A wick that passes with either approves that blend. If you later switch to Sandalwood, the blend has changed and the confirm starts again. Sacred Sandal Ember's page lists car perfumes and solid perfumes alongside candles; the brand-inspired listing sits outside CSI's main fragrance-oil collection. Neither is wrong to try as a scent, but neither is a substitute for this wick test.

Don't buy 500 g of Sandalwood just to see if you like the blend: for a scent decision you need a sniff, not nine candles, and nine candles is the wrong place to discover you dislike the result. Argued against our own interest: if the blend is an idea rather than a product, wait for the 50 g or 100 g, or smell-test the oils on blotter strips first. Buy the 500 g when the blend is going on a shelf: then it is the start of your production stock, not an expensive sample.

And if it is going on a shelf? Then the 500 g is the right buy, and it is barely a compromise. Per gram it costs exactly what the out-of-stock 100 g would: ₹5.03 at 100 g, ₹5.03 at 500 g and ₹5.03 at 1 kg. The difference is ₹2,010.72 of cash leaving earlier, which is the next section's subject.

What the leftover Sandalwood is worth

After the ladder, 428 g of Sandalwood sits in the bottle. Whether that is stock or waste depends on one result.

At the price you paid, the 428 g left after nine candles is worth ₹2,151.47; after a three-candle re-pour it is 404 g, worth ₹2,030.83. What it turns into depends on the burn:

Where the leftover Sandalwood goes · by outcome
428 g after the ladder · 200 g candles at 8% · worked example
Outcome What the leftover becomes What else you need
A rung passes full life, you launch the blend 53 more 50:50 candles (53 × 8 g) 424 g of Vanilla Bean to pair with it, and wicks of the winning rung
No rung passes; the blend needs a second round (a pair, a load step) Oil for the next round, already on your shelf More Vanilla Bean; the next round's wicks only
You drop the blend but like sandalwood 26 straight 200 g Sandalwood candles at 8% Its own confirm on your wick: a straight oil is another system
You drop sandalwood altogether Stock to sell on or use elsewhere This is the case to avoid; it is why "exploring" means waiting

For scale: the ladder consumes ₹361.93 of Sandalwood. The rest of the bottle is not a cost of testing unless the blend dies. Keep it sealed, cool and out of light, as many makers do with all fragrance oils, and note the purchase date on the label.

Vanilla Bean is the dearer half
Per gram, Vanilla Bean at 100 g (₹7.90) costs 1.57 times Sandalwood at 500 g (₹5.03). In production the 50:50 blend's oil costs ₹20.95 less per candle than straight Vanilla Bean at 1 kg prices. That is a pricing fact, not a reason to choose a blend; the scent decides that.

What the approval covers, and what it does not

Approve the blend you will sell: this ratio, this load, these two oils, this jar.

Screen at burn 3, approve only after the full life. Three candles per rung, every one burned to about 1 cm left; commonly cited rules of thumb put the pool depth at about 0.5–1 cm and a full first pool at about 3–4 hours. Judge how close the flame sits to the glass in the final third by eye, never by touch. How far down a test must go is the acceptance-depth post.

Two of three pass on a rung Not decided Re-pour three from the reserve oil
Heavy carbon on every rung Probably load, not wick A load step before any new wick (the load-first order)

The approval does not transfer. It does not approve straight Vanilla Bean or straight Sandalwood (each is its own system), Dark Vanilla in place of Vanilla Bean, either sandal alternative above, a different load, or a different ratio. A ratio change is smaller than a new blend, which is why it gets a smaller confirm: 50:50 to 70:30. If you are juggling several oils and blends across one jar, the attribution method is the fragrance-vs-diameter capstone.

Mistake: reading the ladder at burn 3 and ordering 500 wicks for Diwali. Why it fails: heat commonly builds as a candle burns down, and a rung that looks right at burn 3 can run hot near the base. Fix: no production wicks until all three candles of the leading rung finish. Diwali is 8 November 2026, 38 days from 1 October 2026; a ladder poured this week leaves room for full-life burns before then only if you burn most days, and waiting for small Sandalwood bottles probably removes that margin.

From approved blend to production quantity

The wick order is small and simple. The oil order has two components and one of them may already be on your shelf.

Size the wick order from your production, not the pack list: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), 5% being our worked-example allowance. For each oil: grams = candles × blend grams per candle × component share.

Materials per candle ₹206.74 ₹204.18

Per candle that is Vanilla Bean ₹61.17, Sandalwood ₹40.21, wax ₹93.36 and the wick. A straight Vanilla Bean candle on Cotton Braided would be ₹227.70. Reorder point: daily use × your lead time + safety stock. At 105 wicks a month you use about 3.5 a day; with a 10-day order-to-bench time (yours; CSI publishes no lead times or stock depth) and a week of cover, reorder at 60 wicks. Two oils means two reorder points, and Sandalwood's matters more while the small sizes are out: plan in 500 g and 1 kg steps.

Don't buy the 1,000-pack of the winning wick: C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick in every pack (₹9.44, ₹12.00). At 105 a month a 1,000-pack is most of a year on the shelf, and a change of ratio, oil lot or jar can send the blend back to testing. Buy a month plus safety stock; buy oils in the sizes that match the month.

If your component tests left spare C1 and C2, use them: a wick does not know which oil it was bought for.

wick · the top tabbed rung
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The top rung, and the one a straight vanilla in an 8 cm jar commonly leans toward. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and gives "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; an 8 cm inside diameter sits on that boundary, which is why it is in the ladder and not assumed to win it. Limitation: CSI lists no larger single tabbed wick; if the blend leaves a ring on Cotton Braided, the next step is a pair (spacing in the double-wick spacing post).

wax · the soy the ladder is poured in
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The worked example's wax. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C". Both oil pages also say up to 10% for soy, so the blend's planning ceiling is 10% and 8% of total weight (8.70% of wax weight) is inside it on either basis. Price is flat at ₹0.51 a gram from 1 kg to 10 kg. If your component tests were poured in a different wax, pour the blend in that wax too: results do not transfer between waxes.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers here
500 g ₹260.00 ₹0.52 per g 2 candles at 184 g
1 kg ₹507.40 ₹0.51 per g 5 candles; two bags cover the ladder, 344 g left
5 kg · 10 kg ₹2,537.00 · ₹5,074.00 ₹0.51 per g flat per gram from 1 kg; buy after approval
Nine candles: 1,656 g = ₹840.25. Buy 1 kg — ₹507.40

Skip for this ladder: separate component ladders if you will only sell the blend; a Steel Wick Holder unless the blend reaches the double-wick row (the page's "3-hole layout" holds a pair, but the text we captured states no hole spacing); and Performance Wooden Wicks, a single listing with no widths, so it cannot form a ladder.

The CSI principle
Test the candle you will sell, not the two you blended it from.
Component results choose the rungs. The blend's own nine candles, burned to the bottom, choose the wick. Buy your way round the out-of-stock sizes only when the blend is meant for a shelf.
"Half vanilla and half sandalwood is not half of each wick. It is a third candle."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both oils, the wicks and the wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy our 500 g Sandalwood for an experiment, that our other sandal listings are not substitutes for this test, and that bigger wick packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: Sandalwood 15 g, 50 g and 100 g, Sacred Sandal Ember 100 g and 1 kg, and the Eco C1 10-pack are out of stock on that date and are flagged wherever they appear; every other size shown is in stock. Oil, wick and wax wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The 8 cm jar, 200 g fill, 50:50 ratio, the component results used as an example, the approval thresholds, the 5% allowance, the 100-candle month and the 10-day lead time are our judgement or worked examples; melt-pool times and depths are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wick test a fragrance blend separately?
Yes. A blend is a new fuel. Wick results for each oil alone tell you which rungs to try, not which wick the blend needs. Pour a ladder of the finished blend, three candles per wick, and approve only on a full-life burn.
How much of each oil do I need for a 50:50 blend at 8%?
Load is a share of total candle weight, applied to the blend. A 200 g candle at 8% takes 16 g of blend: 8 g of each oil. Nine test candles need 72 g of each, twelve with a re-pour need 96 g.
Is CSI Sandalwood fragrance oil in stock in small sizes?
Not on 1 October 2026: the 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock; the 500 g (₹2,513.40) and 1 kg (₹5,026.80) are in stock, both at ₹5.03 a gram. Ask on WhatsApp for restock news; we cannot promise a date.
Can I use a different sandalwood oil for the test and switch later?
You can test with it, but the wick result then belongs to that blend. CSI's other sandal listings have different notes (incense and resins, or saffron, rose and amber) and no candle load in the text we captured. Switching later is a new blend and needs a new confirm.
Will a vanilla sandalwood blend need a bigger wick than sandalwood alone?
It may. Vanilla-rich oils are commonly linked to needing a wick step up, and Vanilla Bean's page states 2.5% vanillin; Sandalwood's states 0%. A tendency is not a result: the ladder includes the rung below and the rung above so the blend can show you.
What is the maximum fragrance load for a vanilla and sandalwood blend in soy wax?
Use the lowest stated maximum among the components and the wax as your planning limit. Vanilla Bean and Sandalwood both state up to 10% for soy, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%, so plan at or below 10%; 8% sits inside on either basis. The maximum is not the best-performing load.
Wick-testing a vanilla sandalwood blend
Vanilla Bean 100 g + Sandalwood 500 g = ₹3,303.40, nine candles, three rungs.
Pre-mix the blend by weight, pour nine 200 g candles at 8% from one pot, burn every one to about 1 cm left, and buy production quantities only for the rung that passes. Not sure the blend is going to market yet? Ask us about the small Sandalwood sizes first.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on how fragrance changes wick behaviour (5521–5540): why a finished blend gets its own wick ladder, the 50:50 ladder bill with component grams, the Sandalwood stock problem and the real alternatives, what the leftover oil is worth, what the approval covers, and the step to production quantity and reorder point.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight, applied to the blend (200 g at 8% = 16 g blend + 184 g wax; 50:50 = 8 g of each; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 8.0 cm inside diameter (50.27 cm² of pool) and the 200 g fill are labelled assumptions for the reader's own jar. Ceilings are as the pages state (Vanilla Bean and Sandalwood up to 10% for soy; CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. The component results used as an example, the approval thresholds, the 5% allowance, the 100-candle month and the 10-day lead time are editorial judgement and worked examples. Melt-pool times and depths are commonly cited rules of thumb. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
