Buyer question · 10-scent launch
You have ten scents and no sales history. Buying the same amount of each guarantees that some run out and some sit. Buying in tiers, and writing down the reorder point before launch day, turns the first month into data instead of guesswork.
₹16,434.84
ten oils in three tiers, 2,600 g, 162.50 candles of 200 g at 8% · lean version ₹7,468.42 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much of each fragrance should I buy for a 10-scent launch? Split them into tiers. Three expected leaders at 500 g, four middle scents at 200 g (2 × 100 g), three exploratory scents at 100 g. For the ten oils on this page that is ₹16,434.84 for 2,600 g.

What if my budget is smaller? Halve every tier: 200 g, 100 g and 50 g. The same ten oils then cost ₹7,468.42 for 1,150 g, 71.88 candles. See the lean version.

When should I reorder a scent? When candles on the shelf plus oil in stock fall to weekly sales × (lead time + safety weeks). At 4 candles a week and 3 + 1 weeks, that is 16 candles, or 256 g of oil. See reorder triggers.

Why not buy the same amount of every scent? Because demand is never equal. An equal split of 250 g each costs ₹16,434.96 and gives the leaders only 15.6 candles each, while the slow scents tie up the same money as the fast ones.
The short answer
Tier sizes: A (3 leaders): 500 g each, ₹9,827.00 · B (4 middle): 2 × 100 g each, ₹4,361.04 · C (3 exploratory): 100 g each, ₹2,246.80.
Reorder rule: Reorder point = weekly candles × (lead time + safety weeks) × 16 g. Count poured, unsold candles as well as oil in the bottle.
After 4 weeks: Promote a scent that sold 70%+ of its batch; hold at 30–70%; drop below 30%. Setting reorder levels covers the steady-state version.

A reorder trigger for a Tier A scent — 500 g at launch, selling 4 candles a week 60 30 0 candles of stock Reorder point · 16 candles = 256 g of oil order 1 kg · week 3.8 sellable again · week 6.8 +62.5 candles launch: 31.25 candles Working assumption: 3 weeks from order to sellable candle, plus 1 week of safety stock. Use your own figures.
Stock is counted in candle-equivalents: finished candles on the shelf plus the oil still in the bottle. The Tier A scent starts with 500 g, or 31.25 candles. At 4 a week it crosses the reorder point in week 3.8. With a working assumption of three weeks from order to sellable candle, the new kilo lands with 4.00 candles still in stock, which is the one week of safety you planned. Without the trigger, the same scent would have run out in week 7.8.
Straight answer
I'm starting a candle brand with 10 fragrances — how much fragrance oil should I buy before I know which ones will sell?
Do not buy ten equal amounts. Sort the ten into three tiers and buy each tier differently. Tier A is the three scents you expect to lead: buy 500 g each, 31.25 candles of 200 g at 8%. Tier B is four solid middle scents: 200 g each (two 100 g bottles), 12.5 candles. Tier C is three exploratory scents: 100 g each, 6.25 candles. With the ten oils priced on this page — Vanilla Bean, Raat Ki Rani and Lemongrass and Lime in Tier A — the order costs ₹16,434.84 for 2,600 g and pours 162.50 candles. A lean version at 200 g, 100 g and 50 g costs ₹7,468.42. Then, before launch day, write down a reorder point for each scent: weekly candle sales × (weeks from order to sellable candle + one safety week) × 16 g. At 4 candles a week and a three-week lead time, a Tier A scent reorders at 256 g. After four weeks, promote scents that sold 70% or more of their batch, drop those under 30%, and let the next order follow sales. On CSI's prices, 100 g is already the lowest per-gram rate for most oils, so small tiers do not cost you a premium.
One line: tier the launch, set the trigger before you sell, and let four weeks of sales choose which scent earns a kilo.
Tier A in this plan is three 500 g bottles: Vanilla Bean ₹3,840.00, Raat Ki Rani ₹3,387.00 and Lemongrass and Lime ₹2,600.00. Lemongrass and Lime is the one with a real bulk saving — ₹5.20 a gram at 500 g against ₹5.90 at 100 g.

Three tiers for ten scents

Before you have sales, your best tool is an honest ranking. You will not know which scent wins, but you usually know which three you would bet on and which three are experiments.

A ten-scent launch almost never sells evenly. Two or three scents do most of the selling, a middle group sells steadily, and a few surprise you in either direction. You cannot know which is which in advance, but you can buy in a way that limits the cost of being wrong. The tier method does that: more stock where you expect demand, less where you are guessing, and a rule for moving scents between tiers once real sales arrive.

Tier definitions · 200 g candle at 8% (16 g of oil) · working assumptions
What each tier is for, and how much it gets
Tier Scents Launch quantity each Candles each Chosen because Weeks of cover at planning rate
A · Expected leaders 3 500 g 31.25 Broad appeal, gifting, your brand's signature 7.8 weeks at 4 a week
B · Solid middle 4 200 g (2 × 100 g) 12.50 Rounds out the range; one per scent family 6.2 weeks at 2 a week
C · Exploratory 3 100 g 6.25 Distinctive or niche; you want to find out 6.2 weeks at 1 a week

The planning rates — 4, 2 and 1 candles a week — are working assumptions for a small brand selling online and at a few markets, not forecasts. Replace them with your own expectations. What matters is the ratio. Tier A holds five times the oil of Tier C, because you expect it to sell four times as fast and you want it to be the last thing to run out. Notice the weeks of cover: every tier lasts roughly six to eight weeks at its planning rate. That is deliberate. It means the whole range needs its first reorder decision at about the same time, after you have real data.

How do you choose which scent goes in which tier? Use reasoning, not hope. Tier A should hold a vanilla or gourmand, because warm sweet profiles are the most widely liked in gifting; a floral with local recognition, such as a night-blooming jasmine; and one fresh scent for customers who dislike sweet. Tier B holds one scent from each remaining family you want to cover. Tier C is where you put the scents you love but cannot justify on broad appeal: a patchouli, a resinous wood, a sharp citrus. Choosing your first fragrance collection and the best 10 fragrance oils to start a candle business go deeper on the scent choice itself.

If you do not know your ten yet
Tiering only works for scents you have already tested in your own wax. If some of your ten are untested, test them first at 15 g, or at 50 g where that is the smallest size listed. Testing 20 fragrances before launch sets out the sample sizes and the burn protocol.

The launch order, priced

Here are ten real oils placed into the three tiers, priced at CSI's listed sizes. Tier A leans premium, with a vanilla and an Indian floral. Tier B mixes one amber, one white floral, one spice and one wood. Tier C holds three distinctive scents you would want to test on customers.

Standard launch · 16 g per candle · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Ten scents in three tiers · ₹16,434.84
Tier Oil Packs Oil Cost Candles
A Vanilla Bean 1 × 500 g 500 g ₹3,840.00 31.25
A Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) 1 × 500 g 500 g ₹3,387.00 31.25
A Lemongrass and Lime 1 × 500 g 500 g ₹2,600.00 31.25
B Bergamot Amber 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹1,120.00 12.50
B Gardenia 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹866.00 12.50
B Spicy Cinnamon 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹1,398.00 12.50
B Mahogany Shea 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹977.04 12.50
C Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹896.00 6.25
C Palo Santo 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹601.80 6.25
C Juicy Orange 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹749.00 6.25
Total, 10 scents 2,600 g ₹16,434.84 162.50

Tier A takes ₹9,827.00, or 59.8% of the spend, for 57.7% of the oil. That is where your confidence lives. Tier B takes ₹4,361.04 and Tier C ₹2,246.80. The exploratory tier is the cheapest insurance in the order: three scents you are unsure of, tested on real customers for less than one 500 g of Vanilla Bean.

Tier A · buying 500 g versus five 100 g bottles
Does the bigger pack save money on your leaders?
Oil 500 g 5 × 100 g Saving Per gram at 100 g → 500 g
Vanilla Bean ₹3,840.00 ₹3,950.00 ₹110.00 ₹7.90 → ₹7.68
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) ₹3,387.00 ₹3,500.00 ₹113.00 ₹7.00 → ₹6.77
Lemongrass and Lime ₹2,600.00 ₹2,950.00 ₹350.00 ₹5.90 → ₹5.20

All three Tier A oils are cheaper at 500 g than as five 100 g bottles, but by very different amounts. Lemongrass and Lime saves ₹350.00, a genuine break. Vanilla Bean saves ₹110.00 and Raat Ki Rani ₹113.00. For those two, the 500 g is about convenience and stock security, not price. That is typical of CSI's catalogue: most oils are priced close to flat above 100 g, and only 24 of 91 oils save 5% or more at 1 kg against 100 g.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could suggest a kilo of each Tier A scent to be safe. It would lift the order by thousands of rupees and, for Vanilla Bean and Raat Ki Rani, barely change the price per gram. Before you have sales, a kilo is a guess with a large deposit. Buy 500 g of each leader, set the reorder trigger, and let the kilo be the reorder for the scent that earns it.

Compare the tiered order with an equal split. Giving each of the ten scents 250 g (two 100 g and one 50 g) costs ₹16,434.96 for 2,500 g: almost exactly the same money as the tiered order (₹0.12 apart), but 100 g less oil, and the leaders get 15.6 candles each instead of 31.25. The slow scents, meanwhile, hold 15.6 candles each of stock you may never sell. An equal split feels fair. It is the least efficient way to buy for uneven demand.

The lean version

If the standard order is more than you want to commit, keep the tiers and halve the quantities: Tier A at 200 g (two 100 g), Tier B at 100 g, Tier C at 50 g. You lose some stock depth, not the method.

Lean launch · same ten oils · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Ten scents, half the depth · ₹7,468.42
Tier Oil Packs Oil Cost Candles
A Vanilla Bean 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹1,580.00 12.50
A Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹1,400.00 12.50
A Lemongrass and Lime 2 × 100 g 200 g ₹1,180.00 12.50
B Bergamot Amber 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹560.00 6.25
B Gardenia 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹433.00 6.25
B Spicy Cinnamon 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹699.00 6.25
B Mahogany Shea 1 × 100 g 100 g ₹488.52 6.25
C Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) 1 × 50 g 50 g ₹448.00 3.12
C Palo Santo 1 × 50 g 50 g ₹300.90 3.12
C Juicy Orange 1 × 50 g 50 g ₹379.00 3.12
Total, 10 scents 1,150 g ₹7,468.42 71.88

The lean version costs ₹7,468.42, ₹8,966.42 less than the standard. Its weakness is Tier A: 200 g covers 3.1 weeks at 4 candles a week, so with a three-week lead time and a safety week its reorder point (16 candles) is already above its launch stock (12.5 candles). In other words, the lean Tier A reorder is placed on launch day. That is not a problem if you plan for it; it becomes a problem if a leader sells out during a festival weekend. The 50 g Tier C sizes are sensible here because every Tier C oil is priced within about 1% per gram between 50 g and 100 g (Gilli Mitti ₹8.96 at both, Juicy Orange ₹7.58 against ₹7.49), so there is almost no penalty for buying small.

The mistake that looks careful. Buying all ten scents at 15 g "until we know". Ten testers pour ten candles, one per scent, which is not enough to learn anything about demand. You pay the tester premium, and you still have to place a full order before launch. Testers are for choosing scents. Once a scent is in your launch range, buy it at a size that can actually sell.
Launching before Diwali on 8 November 2026? Festive demand concentrates on fewer scents, so your Tier A should hold more stock than the planning rates above suggest. Send us your ten scents and your festive expectation on WhatsApp and we will price a tiered order and check stock on every line.

Reorder triggers, written before launch

A reorder point decided in advance is a rule. A reorder point decided when the shelf looks empty is a panic.

For each scent, work out the stock level at which you must reorder so that new oil arrives, is poured and has cured before the old stock runs out. Count stock in candle-equivalents: finished candles not yet sold plus grams of oil in the bottle divided by 16. Then:

The CSI principle
Reorder point = weekly sales × (weeks from order to sellable candle + safety weeks).
Weeks from order to sellable candle is your delivery time plus pouring plus your cure time. Safety weeks cover a good week of sales or a slow delivery. Multiply the result by 16 g (at an 8% load in a 200 g candle) to get the reorder point in grams of oil.
Working assumptions: 3 weeks from order to sellable candle, 1 safety week · replace with your own
Reorder triggers and reorder quantities by tier
Tier Planning sales Reorder point In oil Reorder quantity Example cost
Tier A 4 a week 16 candles 256 g of oil 1 × 1 kg Vanilla Bean: ₹7,646.00
Tier B 2 a week 8 candles 128 g of oil 1 × 500 g Bergamot Amber: ₹2,718.00
Tier C 1 a week 4 candles 64 g of oil 2 × 100 g Gilli Mitti (Patchouli): ₹1,792.00

The reorder quantity steps up by tier. A Tier A scent that is selling reorders at 1 kg, which covers 15.6 weeks at 4 a week. A Tier B scent reorders at 500 g. A Tier C scent that sold reorders at 200 g, which is often the moment it earns promotion. The three-week lead time is a working assumption, not a CSI delivery promise; use your own experience of delivery to your city, plus your pour and cure time. How to set reorder levels and how much inventory to keep cover the steady-state version of this maths once you have months of data.

1
Write each scent's reorder point on its bottleIn grams of oil, adjusted for poured stock. For a Tier A scent at the planning rate, 256 g, but subtract 16 g for every unsold candle already on the shelf.
2
Weigh the bottle every weekA kitchen-style scale is enough; the CSI weighing scale is ₹354.00. Record the reading next to that week's candle sales.
3
Recalculate the rate after two weeksReplace the planning rate with the real average. A Tier C scent selling 3 a week now has a Tier A reorder point.
4
Reorder the moment a scent crosses its pointNot at the end of the month. Crossing the line is the order.
5
Batch reorders to one order where you canIf two scents will cross their points within a week of each other, order them together to save a delivery. Consolidating purchasing with one supplier covers this in more depth.
6
Above 1 kg, ask for a quoteThe listed sizes top out at 1 kg per oil. If a leader needs more, message CSI on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published, so ask.

Reading the first four weeks

After four weeks you will have enough data to reshape the range. Measure sell-through: candles sold divided by candles poured for that scent. It is a better signal than compliments, social media likes or which scent you personally prefer.

Four-week review · working thresholds
Promote, hold or drop
Sell-through in 4 weeks Decision Next order for that scent
70% or more Promote one tier C → 200 g, B → 500 g, A → 1 kg
30% to 70% Hold Same quantity as launch, at the reorder point
Under 30% Drop or rest Do not reorder; replace with the best tester
Sold out before week 4 Promote two tiers if it was Tier C Reorder immediately; you missed sales

Two cautions. Do not judge a scent on the first week alone; early sales favour whatever you displayed most. And do not drop a scent that sold slowly because it was out of stock for part of the month; that is a stock problem, not a demand problem. The launch quantities above are designed so that no tier should run out before week six at its planning rate, which keeps the four-week review fair.

Wicks: Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 at ₹590.00 for 100. Jars: White Matte Glass Jar at ₹354.00 for 5. You do not need to pour the whole launch at once — pour Tier A in full and Tiers B and C in halves, and keep the rest as oil.

Pouring in stages is itself a stock lever. Oil in a sealed bottle can become any candle size you need; a poured candle is committed to one scent and one jar. Keep a share of each tier as oil until you see which sizes and scents are moving. The ₹5,000 first order and the ₹10,000 split show smaller budgets built on the same principle.

Launch with ten scents, buy for three, and let the customers tell you which three.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would be in our interest to recommend a kilo of every launch scent. On our listed prices most oils cost nearly the same per gram at 100 g as at 1 kg, so this page recommends tiered quantities and lets the kilo be the reorder for scents that sell.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and scale prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every pack in both launch orders was in stock on the pull date. Totals, per-gram figures, candle counts and reorder points are arithmetic, shown so you can check them.

The planning sales rates, the three-week lead time, the safety week and the 30%/70% thresholds are working assumptions for a small brand, not forecasts or CSI delivery promises. Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil should I buy for a candle brand launch?
Enough for six to eight weeks of expected sales per scent, bought in tiers. For ten scents, 500 g of three leaders, 200 g of four middle scents and 100 g of three exploratory scents: 2,600 g, ₹16,434.84 for the oils on this page.
How many fragrances should a new candle brand start with?
Ten is a workable launch range if you tier the quantities. Fewer, around five to seven, is easier to manage. The best 5 fragrance oils to start covers the smaller range.
When should I reorder candle fragrance oil?
When candles on the shelf plus oil in stock fall to weekly sales × (weeks from order to sellable candle + safety weeks). At 4 candles a week, 3 weeks lead time and 1 safety week, reorder at 16 candles, or 256 g of oil.
Should I buy 1 kg of my best-selling fragrance?
Once it has proved itself, yes, for stock security. For most oils the 1 kg is within 1% per gram of the 100 g, so it does not save money; it saves reorders. Lemongrass and Lime is an exception with a real saving (₹5.20 against ₹5.90 a gram).
What do I do with fragrance oils that do not sell?
Stop reordering, use the remaining oil in testers, wax melts or seasonal blends, and replace the scent with your best-performing tester. Tier C quantities are small precisely so this costs little.
Can CSI give me a price for my launch order?
Yes. Send your scents and quantities on WhatsApp for a quote, GST invoice and documentation. No volume discount figure is published, so ask for a quote rather than assuming one.
Tier it, trigger it, then scale it
Three leaders at 500 g, four at 200 g, three at 100 g. Write the reorder points before launch day.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Candle counts assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax). Planning sales rates (4, 2 and 1 candles a week by tier), 3 weeks from order to sellable candle, 1 safety week and the 30%/70% sell-through thresholds are working assumptions, not forecasts or delivery promises. The equal-split comparison gives each scent 2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
