The rule behind the five

Most lists of best fragrances are somebody's favourites. This one follows three conditions. One oil per family, so no two candles compete for the same customer. The highest-placed oil of that family in the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on the pull date, because that sort is the only public popularity signal CSI has. And in stock at all five sizes, so a scent that passes your test can be scaled from 100 g to 1 kg without waiting.

The sort order is not sales data. CSI publishes no unit sales, and this page does not claim any. What the sort does tell you is that these oils sit near the top of what CSI's own customers — mostly candle makers — have been choosing. That is a reasonable place to start a shortlist and a poor substitute for your own testing. Seven families lead oils in the top 13 of the sort. A five-oil range has to leave two out. Spice and seasonal oils like Apple Cinnamon earn their place for a season, not all year, and fruit and citrus answer a similar customer request — something bright and cheerful — so one slot covers both at the start. That leaves five families and five oils.

The five, priced

Each card gives every listed size with its price, its price per gram and the fragrance cost inside a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g), if you poured from that size. The row to watch is 100 g, the size a new business should produce from.

What each costs inside a candle

Material cost here is oil, 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, an Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80. It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. The five sit within ₹38.40 of each other, so one selling price works for the whole range. If you later move to 1 kg packs, the average oil cost drops only a little, because Lavender and Sandalwood are priced almost flat above 100 g. Swapping a slot

The five are a default, not a law. If a slot fails your burn test, doesn't suit your customer or doesn't fit your price, swap within the same family. Keeping the family fixed keeps the shape of the range. Each alternative below was in stock at every size on the pull date.

Two patterns are worth noticing. The close-cost alternatives move the candle by only a few rupees either way, because the five already sit low: Eucalyptus Spearmint instead of Lavender saves ₹29.76 a candle, the biggest saving on the list, while Cinnamon Vanilla instead of Roasted Coffee adds ₹15.01. The 50-candle launch batch

Once the five pass testing, the first real batch is ten 200 g candles per scent, fifty in all. Each scent needs 160 g of oil at 8%. We plan a 5% working allowance for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption, not a rule — so each oil needs about 168 g. For British Rose, Roasted Coffee and Citrus Lemon the answer is simply two 100 g bottles: their 50 g and 15 g sizes cost enough more per gram that topping up a single 100 g never beats a second one. For Lavender and Sandalwood a 100 g + 50 g + two 15 g mix comes out cheaper, by ₹59.96 and ₹44.84. Be clear about why: the mix buys 180 g instead of 200 g, so most of the saving is simply buying 20 g less oil, not a better rate. After the first five

A five-scent range is a start, not a ceiling.
