Which Fragrances to Buy · First Collection
Choosing a first collection is not one decision; it is ten small ones in a fixed order. Make them in that order and write each one down, and the collection is easy to defend, easy to cost and easy to change later. This page walks through the ten, with real oils and real prices.
10 steps
from a one-page brand brief to a first order of ₹18,086.06 and a 60-day review · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I choose my first fragrance collection? In order: write a brand brief, set a fragrance cost ceiling per candle, decide how many scents, assign one family to each slot, shortlist two oils per slot, eliminate on stock and cost, burn-test the rest, cost the winners into your price, order, and review after 60 days. See the ten steps.

How many fragrances should a first collection have? Four to six for most new brands, five in the worked example. Fewer than four gives customers little choice; more than six spreads a first order too thin. Best 5 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business and Best Fragrance Oils for a Small Candle Brand look at five and four.

How much does it cost to choose a first collection? In the worked example, ten 15 g testers cost ₹1,031.02. The first order for 60 candles in five scents, with wax, wicks and jars, is ₹18,086.06 including the testers.

Can I launch a first collection before Diwali 2026? Yes, if you start now. Working back from 8 November, testers need to be ordered in the last week of September and production oil by mid-October. See the timeline. Confirm dispatch times with CSI on WhatsApp.
The short answer
The process: Brief → ceiling → size → family slots → two candidates per slot → eliminate on stock and cost → burn test → cost into price → order → 60-day review.
Worked example: Five slots, ten candidates, ₹95.00 ceiling per 200 g candle at 100 g. Chocolate Fudge out on stock (100 g out of stock); Palo Santo out on cost (₹96.29).
First order: Ten testers ₹1,031.02 · five winners, 2 × 100 g each, ₹5,029.04 · with wax, wicks and jars for 60 candles, ₹18,086.06.
A first collection in six weeks — working back from Diwali, 8 November 2026 24 Sep Brief, ceiling, shortlist, order testers 1 Oct Pour test candles 8 Oct Cure (soy: a week+) 15 Oct Burn, score, order production 22 Oct Pour the collection 29 Oct Cure, label, photograph 5 Nov On sale before Diwali, 8 Nov Filled dots are buying decisions. Dates are a planning sketch from 24 September; they exclude delivery time, which you should confirm with CSI on WhatsApp when you order.
Six weeks is tight but workable for a five-scent collection, because testing and production overlap with curing. If you are reading this after early October, launch a smaller collection for Diwali and the full one for the November–February wedding season. Dates exclude delivery; confirm current dispatch times with CSI when you order.
Straight answer
How do I choose my first fragrance oil collection for a candle brand?
Make ten decisions, in order, and write each one down. 1 Brief: who buys, for what occasion, at what price. 2 Ceiling: the most fragrance each candle can carry — for a 200 g candle at 8%, the example uses ₹95.00 at 100 g prices. 3 Size: four to six scents. 4 Slots: one scent family per slot. 5 Candidates: two oils per slot, from CSI's best-selling sort (its only popularity signal, not sales data) and from your brief. 6 Eliminate any candidate that is out of stock at your production size or over the ceiling. 7 Burn-test the survivors side by side and score them. 8 Cost the winners into your selling price. 9 Order production sizes of the winners. 10 Review after 60 days and swap the slowest scent. In the worked example, ten 15 g testers cost ₹1,031.02, two candidates fall out before a single candle is poured, and the first order for 60 candles is ₹18,086.06.
One line: ten decisions, in order, written down — the collection follows.
The worked example's ten testers — two candidates for each of five slots — cost ₹1,031.02 in 15 g. That is the whole research budget for a first collection: one 200 g test candle per oil at 7.5%, or three 50 g test pots each at 8%.

The ten steps

A collection chosen in one afternoon of sniffing bottles is a collection of moods. A collection chosen in ten written steps is a plan.

This page is the process view of the cluster. Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy to Start a Candle Business? sets out the three filters — family, price tier, stock depth — that sit inside it; this page puts them in sequence with the steps before and after, and works a real example from brand brief to reorder. The table is the whole process on one screen. Print it, fill in the right-hand column, and you have a record of every decision you made.

The collection decision sheet · fill in the last column
Ten decisions, in order
Step Decision Worked example Your answer
1 Brand brief: customer, occasion, price Home and gifting, mid-market, one candle size
2 Fragrance ceiling per candle ₹95.00 of oil per 200 g candle at 8%, 100 g prices
3 Collection size Five scents
4 Family per slot Floral, fresh, gourmand, woody, fruity
5 Two candidates per slot Ten oils (table below)
6 Eliminate on stock and cost Two out before testing
7 Burn test and score Eight tested, five chosen
8 Cost into the selling price Average material cost ₹267.38
9 First order ₹18,086.06 for 60 candles, testers included
10 60-day review Swap the slowest scent

Two rules make the sheet work. Decisions are made in order: you do not choose oils (step 5) before you know your ceiling (step 2), because the ceiling removes candidates. And each decision is written down, so that when a scent underperforms at step 10 you can see which decision to revisit — the brief, the ceiling, the slot or the oil.

Steps 1–3: brief, ceiling, size

Step 1, the brief. One page: who buys your candles, for what occasion, where, and at roughly what price. "Home and gifting, mid-market, sold at stalls and online" is enough to start. A brief for wedding favours or corporate gifts points to different families and different quantities; Best Fragrance Oils for Wedding Return-Gift Candles and Best Candle Fragrances for Corporate Gifting cover those.

Step 2, the ceiling. Decide the most fragrance each candle can carry. For a 200 g candle at 8%, the base of 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar is ₹186.92. The example sets the fragrance ceiling at ₹95.00 at 100 g prices — ₹5.94 a gram — which allows Core and most Mid-tier oils. Best Fragrance Oils for a Small Candle Brand shows how to derive a ceiling from a target material cost.

Step 3, the size. Four to six scents for a first collection. Each scent needs enough sales to use a 100 g bottle (six 200 g candles at 8%) before it goes stale on the shelf. The example uses five. The best-selling sort is not an input here; your channel is. A single stall supports fewer scents than an online shop with a grid.

The brief decides the families, not the other way round
It is tempting to start with the scents you love and write a brief that fits them. Do it the other way. If the brief says gifting, a warm gourmand and a floral are near-certain slots whatever your personal favourite is.

Steps 4–6: slots, candidates, eliminations

Step 4, the slots. Give each scent a family: floral, fresh, gourmand, woody, fruity in the example. One family per slot keeps the collection from having two candles competing for one customer. Step 5, the candidates. Two oils per slot. The example draws them from positions 16–42 of CSI's best-selling sort, deliberately below the top fifteen used in Best 5 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business and Best 10 Fragrance Oils to Start a Candle Business, to show that the process works anywhere in the catalogue. The sort is CSI's only popularity signal; it reflects what candle makers buy from CSI, by position only.

Ten candidates · ₹95.00 ceiling · CSI live pricing and stock, 24 September 2026
Step 6: two eliminations before a candle is poured
Slot Candidate Sort position 15 g 100 g Oil per candle at 100 g Step 6 verdict
Floral Gardenia 23 ₹105.02 ₹433.00 ₹69.28 Through to burn test
Floral Ylang Ylang Flower 30 ₹106.20 ₹590.00 ₹94.40 Through to burn test
Fresh Verbena 42 ₹106.20 ₹590.00 ₹94.40 Through to burn test
Fresh Lemongrass and Lime 17 ₹116.52 ₹590.00 ₹94.40 Through to burn test
Gourmand Cinnamon Vanilla 18 ₹106.20 ₹483.80 ₹77.41 Through to burn test
Gourmand Chocolate Fudge 19 ₹93.22 Out of stock — Out — 100 g out of stock
Woody Dark Vanilla Oud 16 ₹105.02 ₹590.00 ₹94.40 Through to burn test
Woody Palo Santo 37 ₹106.20 ₹601.80 ₹96.29 Out — over the ₹95.00 ceiling
Fruity Peach Melon Berry 31 ₹81.42 ₹417.72 ₹66.84 Through to burn test
Fruity Orchard Pear 39 ₹105.02 ₹380.00 ₹60.80 Through to burn test

Step 6, the eliminations. Two candidates fall out on paper. Chocolate Fudge was out of stock at 100 g on the pull date — the size a first collection produces from — so it fails on stock depth even though its 15 g, 50 g, 500 g and 1 kg were in stock. Palo Santo puts ₹96.29 of oil into a candle at 100 g, ₹1.29 over the ceiling. Neither is a bad oil. Each fails a decision you already made. You can still buy their testers if you are curious; you should not plan the collection around them.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The process tells you to eliminate oils before you buy them, which means fewer testers sold. It also means that the ten testers are an upper limit, not a target: if you dropped Chocolate Fudge and Palo Santo at step 6, eight testers are enough, and they cost ₹831.60.

Steps 7–8: burn test and costing

Everything up to now has been paperwork. Step 7 is where the oils have to earn their place.

Step 7, the burn test. Pour one candle per surviving candidate in the wax, wick and jar you will sell, at 8%. Cure soy for at least a week. Burn each slot's two candidates side by side in the same room for the same time, and score them. The scorecard below is a template; the scores are yours to fill in, because no supplier can tell you how an oil performs in your wax and your jar. How to Sample Candle Fragrance Oils Before Placing a Wholesale Order covers sampling method in depth.

Burn-test scorecard · score 1–5 per criterion · template
Scoring each slot's candidates
Criterion What to look for Weight
Cold throw Scent from the unlit candle at arm's length ×1
Hot throw Scent across the room after an hour's burn ×3
Fit to brief Does it suit the customer and occasion in step 1? ×2
Distinct from the other slots Would a customer confuse it with another candle in the collection? ×2
Burn quality Even melt pool, no soot or sweating at your load ×2

Step 8, the costing. Put each winner into the per-candle table. In the example the assumed winners are Gardenia, Verbena, Cinnamon Vanilla, Dark Vanilla Oud and Peach Melon Berry. They are an illustration of a possible outcome, not a prediction of your burn test.

Assumed winners · 200 g candle at 8% · oil at 100 g · base ₹186.92
The collection, costed
Slot Oil Tier Oil per candle Material cost per candle 1 kg in stock?
Floral Gardenia Core ₹69.28 ₹256.20 Yes
Fresh Verbena Core ₹94.40 ₹281.32 Yes
Gourmand Cinnamon Vanilla Core ₹77.41 ₹264.32 Yes
Woody Dark Vanilla Oud Mid ₹94.40 ₹281.32 Yes
Fruity Peach Melon Berry Core ₹66.84 ₹253.75 Yes
Average ₹80.46 ₹267.38

Material cost here excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. The five sit within ₹27.56 of each other, which means one selling price works across the collection. If one winner had come in far above the others, step 8 is where you would either price it separately or go back to its runner-up.

Floral slot · Core tier
Gardenia Fragrance Oil
A creamy white floral at ₹69.28 a candle, well under the ceiling. It is priced flat from 100 g to 1 kg at ₹4.33 a gram, so a proven Gardenia can be scaled without the price changing.

Verbena Fragrance Oil
A bright, lemony herb. At 100 g it costs the same per candle as Lemongrass and Lime (₹94.40), but its 1 kg is 20.0% cheaper per gram than its 100 g, so if it becomes a best seller it gets cheaper to make. That can break a tie at step 7.

Steps 9–10: order and review

Step 9, the first order. Twelve candles per scent, sixty in all. Each scent needs 192 g of oil, 197.76 g with a 3% working allowance for pour loss (an assumption), which two 100 g bottles cover. Wax for sixty 200 g candles is 11.04 kg.

Re-check stock on the dayOpen each winner's product page before you order. Stock on 24 September 2026 is a snapshot.
2
Order production oil at 100 gTwo 100 g bottles per winner: ₹5,029.04 for the five. Not the kilo yet — see step 10.
3
Order wax in 5 kg packsTwo 5 kg and two 1 kg packs of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cover 12 kg for ₹7,188.00. The 10 kg pack is ₹9.00 dearer than two 5 kg packs.
4
Ask for the paperwork with the orderGST invoice, MSDS and IFRA documentation are available on request. Ask now, not when a retailer asks you.
5
Step 10: review at 60 daysList sales by scent. The fastest seller is a core-stock candidate (Which Candle Fragrance Oils Should I Always Keep in Stock?). The slowest is the slot to revisit: go back to its runner-up from step 7, or back to step 4 if the family itself is not selling.
6
Write down what changedAdd a line to the decision sheet for each swap and why. After two or three reviews, the sheet is a record of what your customers actually want.

Skipping step 10. Most first collections are never reviewed; they just grow. A scent that sold two candles in sixty days keeps its shelf space because no one wrote down that it was supposed to be reviewed. Put the review date in your calendar the day you place the order.

The Diwali timeline

Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Working back, a five-scent collection can still be on sale in the first week of November if testers are ordered in the last week of September. The timeline above is a sketch: soy wax needs at least a week to cure for testing and again for sale, and the production order has to be placed as soon as the burn test ends. Delivery time is not included; confirm current dispatch times with CSI on WhatsApp when you order, and do not rely on a restock of a popular size arriving late in October.

If the timeline is already too tight when you read this, do not rush the burn test. Launch two or three scents that you have already tested for Diwali, and the full collection for the November–February wedding season. When Should Candle Businesses Order Fragrance Oils for Diwali Production? covers when to order for Diwali in more detail, and I'm Making 500 Candles for Diwali — Which Fragrances Should I Buy and How Much Fragrance Oil Will I Need? works through a 500-candle Diwali order.

The CSI principle
Decide in order, write it down, review it.
A first collection is ten decisions, not one. Taken in order — brief, ceiling, size, slots, candidates, eliminations, burn test, costing, order, review — each one narrows the next, and each one can be revisited later without starting again.
Two candidates fell out of the example before a single candle was poured. That is the process working, and it cost nothing.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This process removes candidates before they are bought and keeps first orders to 100 g bottles. That is less oil sold in the short term, and it is how a first collection is chosen without waste.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Stock status and sort positions are as listed on that date; CSI publishes no unit sales. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-candle and order figures are plain arithmetic on the listed prices.

The brief, the ₹95.00 ceiling, the five slots, the assumed burn-test winners and the timeline are a worked example, not a recommendation or a prediction. Dates exclude delivery. For shortlist help, stock checks, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick fragrances for my candle brand?
Write a brief, set a cost ceiling per candle, decide how many scents, give each slot a family, shortlist two oils per slot, eliminate on stock and cost, burn-test the rest, cost the winners, order, and review after 60 days. The decision sheet on this page lays it out.
How many candle scents should I launch with?
Four to six for most new brands. Each scent needs enough sales to use a 100 g bottle — about six 200 g candles at 8% — before it goes stale. Best Fragrance Oils for a Small Candle Brand explains the maths for a small brand.
How do I test fragrance oils before choosing?
Pour one candle per oil in the wax, wick and jar you will sell, at your intended load, cure for at least a week, and burn candidates for the same slot side by side. Score hot throw most heavily. How to Sample Candle Fragrance Oils Before Placing a Wholesale Order covers the method.
What if the fragrance I choose goes out of stock?
That is why stock depth is checked at step 6 and again on the day you order. Keep each slot's runner-up from step 7 as a tested substitute, and ask CSI on WhatsApp for a restock date.
How much should a first candle collection cost?
In the worked example, ₹18,086.06 for ten testers and 60 finished candles' worth of oil, wax, wicks and jars. Your figure depends on your ceiling and quantities. I Have ₹5,000 to Buy Fragrance Oils for My New Candle Business — Which Fragrances and Quantities Should I Start With? prices a ₹5,000 start.
When should I change a fragrance in my collection?
At a planned review, not on impulse. After 60 days, compare sales by scent; revisit the slowest slot with its runner-up. Promote the fastest to core stock. Which Candle Fragrance Oils Should I Always Keep in Stock? covers core stock.
Ten steps, one collection
Write the brief, set the ceiling, fill the slots, test, cost, order — and review in 60 days.

Stock status is as listed on the pull date. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. The worked example uses a ₹95.00 fragrance ceiling per 200 g candle at 100 g prices, ten candidates, and assumed burn-test winners (Gardenia, Verbena, Cinnamon Vanilla, Dark Vanilla Oud, Peach Melon Berry) chosen for illustration. The first order assumes 12 candles per scent (192 g + 3% = 197.76 g, two 100 g bottles), 11.04 kg of wax bought as 12 kg, 60 wicks from a pack of 100 and 60 jars.
