CSI Jar & Container Guides · Diameter × Wick
A jar's capacity tells you how much wax fits. It does not tell you how wide a pool the flame has to melt, and that is the only thing the wick answers to. Here is the proof, from our own listings, and the test that settles it.
64.6%
more inside pool area in one 130 g container than in another 130 g container, both CSI listings (walls of 0.35 cm assumed) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Can two jars with the same capacity share a wick? Not by default. Capacity is volume; the wick has to melt a pool across the inside diameter. Two jars that both hold 130 g can differ by 64.6% in pool area, so the same wick will usually under-melt one or over-heat the other.

When might it work? Only when the inside diameters at pool height turn out close, the wax, oil and load are identical, and a side-by-side burn proves it through to the final third.

How do I prove it? One control candle in the jar the wick already passes in, three in the new jar on the same wick, two on the neighbouring rung. Burn them together and compare pool width hour by hour.

What does proof cost? Moving a proven C2 from the 200 ml Matte jar to the 200ml Salsa jar: ₹1,295.20 for five Salsa jars, 1 kg of wax, 100 g of oil and both wick packs. A 100-candle Salsa order on an unproven wick puts ₹17,549.00 at risk.
The short answer
The default: no. Same capacity says nothing about diameter, and diameter is what the wick answers to.
The evidence from CSI's own listings: two 120 g containers listed at 6 cm and 5 cm across (51.9% apart in inside area); two 130 g containers at 6 cm and 7.5 cm (64.6% apart); two in-stock 200 ml jars where one page gives no diameter at all.
The proof: measure both insides, predict which way the new jar will fail, then burn a control, three same-wick candles and two neighbour-wick candles together.
The money: proof ₹1,295.20; the 100-candle order it protects ₹17,549.00; switching 100 jars from Matte to Salsa saves ₹4,130.00 in jars alone.
Same capacity on the label, different pool to melt CSI listings, drawn to scale from above (1 cm = 14 px). Outer ring = listed figure; inner = 0.35 cm walls subtracted (assumed). The Matte "width" may be outside. Measure both insides at pool height before keeping one wick for both. Listed diameters are not stated as inside or outside on any of these pages; the 0.35 cm wall is illustrative. Ceramic walls may be thicker.
Two same-capacity pairs from CSI's own listings, drawn to scale from above, with bars for inside pool area. In the 120 g pair the wider jar has 51.9% more pool than the narrower one once walls are subtracted; in the 130 g pair, 64.6%. The in-stock 200 ml pair cannot be compared at all from the pages. In every case the capacity is identical and the wick's job is not.
Straight answer
Two glass jars have the same capacity but different diameters. Can I use the same wick if the wax and fragrance stay identical?
Not by default, and not without proof. A wick does not see the jar's capacity; it sees the circle of wax it has to melt, which is set by the inside diameter at the height of the pool. Two jars with the same capacity can have very different circles: CSI's own listings include two 130 g containers stated at 6 cm and 7.5 cm across, which is about 64.6% more pool area in the wider one once the walls are subtracted. Put the same wick in both and the likely result is a candle that tunnels in the wider jar, or one that runs hot and deep in the narrower one, even with identical wax, oil and load. The same wick can work when the two insides measure close, but "close" has to be shown, not assumed. Measure both insides at pool height, predict which way the new jar should fail, and burn a control candle in the proven jar next to three same-wick candles and two neighbour-wick candles in the new one. If the new jar matches the control through to the final third, keep the wick. If it fails the way the diameter predicted, the neighbour is your starting point.
One line: same capacity is not same diameter; keep the wick only after a side-by-side burn says you can.
Prove the switch for ₹1,295.20. Five 200ml Salsa jars (₹200.60), 1 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00), 100 g of British Rose (₹342.20) and ten each of C1 and C2, all in stock on 26 September 2026. Use your own Matte jar as the control.

Why capacity cannot carry a wick from one jar to another

Capacity is a volume. A wick is judged on a surface.

Capacity is the inside area of the jar multiplied by its height, give or take a shoulder. The same 130 g can sit in a narrow, tall jar or a wide, short one; the label cannot tell you which. The flame, meanwhile, only ever deals with the top surface of the wax: it has to melt a pool from the wick out to the glass, all the way round, in the first few hours of burning. That pool is set by the inside diameter, and the capacity does not appear in it at all. The full physics of why narrow and wide jars burn differently with the same wax is in the tall-narrow vs short-wide post; here we only need the conclusion: the wick follows the diameter, not the ml or grams.

What capacity does change, when the diameter changes with it, is how deep the wax column is. The narrow 130 g jar holds its wax in a taller column, about 1.65 times deeper than the wide one on our wall assumption, so it burns for more sessions, and the flame spends longer lower in the glass, where heat tends to build. That is a second reason the same wick can behave differently in the two jars even if both pass the first burn.

"Identical wax and fragrance" is necessary, not sufficient

Keeping the wax, oil and load identical removes the other reasons a wick result can move. That matters: without it you could not tell a jar effect from an oil effect. But it does not make the jars identical. With everything else held still, the only thing left to change the result is the geometry, and the geometry is exactly what differs.

Mistake: ordering a new "200 ml" jar to replace a proven 200 ml jar and pouring the next batch with the same wick. What tends to happen: if the new jar is wider inside, a ring of hard wax at the glass after the first burn, which deepens into a tunnel; if narrower, a faster, deeper pool, a taller flame and a hotter jar in the last third. Fix: measure, predict, prove, on five jars before a hundred.

Worked area difference: same-capacity pairs from CSI's own listings

We did not have to invent an example. Our own catalogue has three.

CSI's listings include pairs of containers that state the same capacity and different diameters. None of the pages says whether the diameter is inside or outside, so we show both readings: the listed figure as written, and the listed figure minus two walls of about 3.5 mm (the illustrative wall used across this series; ceramic walls may well be thicker). Pool area is π × r² on the radius.

Read the percentages, not just the areas. On the listed figures the 120 g pair differs by 44.0% and the 130 g pair by 56.2%. Subtract the walls and the gaps grow, to 51.9% and 64.6%, because the same wall thickness is a bigger share of a narrow jar than of a wide one. That is a general point worth keeping: comparing outside figures understates how different two insides are. How an external figure misleads a wick choice is the external-vs-internal post.

Read the reach, too. In the 130 g pair the flame in the wider jar has to melt 3.4 cm from wick to glass instead of 2.65 cm, 28% further in every direction. No single wick is likely to be right at both distances; the burn test is how you find out whether one is close enough.

The 200 ml pair is the one you are most likely to face with our range

Both 200 ml jars are in stock, both are sold as 200 ml, and one page gives no diameter at all. The Matte family's "width 7 cm" may be outside (6.3 cm inside on our wall assumption); the Salsa page states only a 63 mm lug cap and a "Wide Mouth Opening", and a threaded neck usually sits above a wider body. So the Salsa's inside at pool height could be narrower or wider than the Matte's. Worked example: if it measured 7.0 cm inside, it would have 23.5% more pool than a 6.3 cm Matte; if 5.8 cm, 15.2% less. Either is enough to move a wick. Why two "200" jars can hold different weights is covered for fill in the same-ml, different-shape post; this post is about the wick.

Argued against our own interest: none of the CSI pages above states an inside diameter, and one states no diameter at all. Two of the six containers are out of stock on 26 September 2026, so you cannot buy both halves of either twin from us today. If you own one of them, the method below works on it; if you are choosing between jars, measure before you order in quantity, ours included.

Predict before you burn: which way will the new jar fail?

A test that confirms a prediction is worth twice a test that just produces a result.

Before you pour, work out which direction the new jar should go wrong, so the burn test has a question to answer.

Prediction from the measured inside diameters · rules of thumb, our judgement
What to expect with the same wick, and which neighbour to test
New jar vs proven jar What the same wick tends to do Neighbour to test
Wider inside Pool stops short of the glass at 3 to 4 hours; hard ring; tunnelling in later burns One rung up (C1 → C2; C2 → Cotton Braided)
Narrower inside Pool reaches the glass early, runs deep; taller flame; hotter glass, especially low in the jar One rung down (Cotton Braided → C2; C2 → C1)
Measures the same within what your tool can resolve Probably similar, but shape (shoulder, taper, base thickness) can still differ Test the same wick; carry one neighbour as insurance
Changes diameter with height (taper, shoulder) Behaviour changes through the burn See the narrowing-jar post and the wider-at-the-top post

How much difference is too much to carry a wick across is a tolerance question that belongs to the standardising post, and what a single 5 mm step does to pool area is the 5 mm post. The honest summary for this post: you do not need a tolerance figure to decide whether to test. If two jars are not the same jar, test.

How to measure both jars the same way

Callipers across the inside 1 to 2 cm below your fill line, read at right angles; again near the base; and the wall thickness at the lip. Water-fill both to your fill line on a scale, because a different diameter at the same capacity also means a different fill height, and the fill line sets how many burns the candle has. Record the lot on the same sheet as the proven jar's figures.

Same diameter, different capacity: the mirror image
The Shiny Glass Jar (120 gm, 6.5 cm tall) and the Shot Glass Jar (130 g, 8 cm tall) are both listed at 6 cm across. If the insides measure the same, the same wick has a much better chance of carrying over, because the pool is the same size; the taller jar simply has more burns in it. You still check the final third, where the taller jar's flame spends longer. Choosing jars by diameter to cut the number of wick sizes you stock is the business case post.

How to prove the same wick works: the control-and-neighbour test

Six candles. One of them already knows the answer.

The test has three groups. A control: one candle in the jar the wick already passes in, poured from the same batch, so you can see whether today's wax, oil, room and cure are behaving normally. The claim: three candles in the new jar on the same wick. The fallback: two candles in the new jar on the neighbour your prediction pointed to. Worked example: C2 proven in the 200 ml Matte jar, switching to the 200ml Salsa jar, 150 g candles at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax) in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with British Rose. Weigh your own fills first.

1
Measure and predictInside diameter of both jars at pool height and near the base; water-fill to the fill line. Write down the prediction: wider, narrower or same, and which neighbour you will test.
2
Pour six candles from one batch828 g of wax and 72 g of oil for six 150 g candles, plus a margin. One control Matte with C2; three Salsa with C2; two Salsa with the neighbour. Same fill line relative to each jar's rim, wicks centred and held straight.
3
Cure all six togetherSame days, same shelf. Many CSI oil pages (25 of 102) state a 48–72 hour cure for soy; if your proven wick was judged after a longer cure, match it.
4
Burn together, 3 to 4 hours, logged hourlyPool width, full pool yes or no, pool depth at the end, flame and soot. The control should behave the way it always has; if it doesn't, the day is off, not the jar: rerun.
5
Compare the claim with the control, not with a chartThe same wick is proven if all three Salsa C2 candles reach the glass in about the same time as the control (and within the 3 to 4 hour rule of thumb), at a similar depth, with a clean flame. If they fail in the predicted direction and the neighbours pass, switch wicks.
6
Carry the winner to the final thirdRepeat burns to about 1 cm of wax left (common practice). In a jar with a shoulder the pool can change as it passes the neck; in a taller jar the flame spends longer low down. A carried-over wick that fails here was never carried over.
Reading the proof test · our judgement
Outcome and decision
Outcome Decision
All three same-wick candles match the control through the final third Same wick proven for this jar, wax, oil and load: record it on the spec sheet
Same-wick candles fail as predicted; neighbours pass Change wick for the new jar; confirm the neighbour on three more candles
Same-wick candles fail against the prediction Re-measure: the inside diameter, a shoulder or the fill line is not what you thought
Mixed results within the three same-wick candles Look for a cause (centring, draught, fill) before calling it; rerun if none is found
Control misbehaves The whole session is void: wax, oil, cure or room changed; rerun
Safety, briefly: burn within sight, never unattended, on a heat-safe surface; reject any jar with a chip or crack; stop with about 1 cm of wax left. None of the jars in this post states a numeric heat rating; the Salsa page's "withstands the heat of hot wax" is its claim, and CSI publishes no burn-down or breakage data for these jars.

What to buy to prove it

Five items: the new jar in the worked example, the two same-capacity jars from our pairs that are in stock, the two wick rungs, and the wax. Chosen on page wording, price and stock on 26 September 2026.

jar · 200 ml · the new jar in the worked example
200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap (Golden Lid)
The page states "The 200ml capacity", a golden 63 mm lug cap, a "Wide Mouth Opening" and "Heat Resistant Glass… withstands the heat of hot wax without cracking or warping" (the page's claim; no figure). It states no height and no body diameter, which is exactly why a wick proven in another 200 ml jar cannot simply be carried over. It is the cheaper 200 ml family at quantity: ₹40.12 per jar at 5 Pcs, ₹29.50 at 50 or 100. Limitation: a threaded neck and shoulder mean the pool near the top may be narrower than lower down; measure at more than one height. The page calls it "upcycled"; confirm finish and dispatch on WhatsApp for a large order.

Shot Glass Jar (Pack of 6) 130gram
The page states "Fill Capacity - 130gram", "Height - 8cm" and "Diameter - 6cm", and says "Their sturdy design ensures safe, stylish burning" (no heat figure). Its 130 g twin in the CSI range, the Cute Ceramic Candle Container (130 g, 7.5 cm diameter, 5.5 cm tall), is out of stock on 26 September 2026; if you own that ceramic, this glass jar is the narrow half of the diagram's 130 g pair. Limitation: the title says Pack of 6, the handle says 5 and the description says "pack of five", so confirm the count on WhatsApp; per jar is ₹48.00 if six, ₹57.60 if five.

The page states "Capacity: 120 gm" and "6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height", in stock on 26 September 2026. Amber and Pink versions are the same price (₹47.20 each, singly or in fives); Red, Green, Navy Blue and Purple are ₹50.00 each as singles. Its 120 g twin in the range, the Premium Ceramic Candle Container (120 g, 5 cm diameter, 7.5 cm tall), is out of stock. Limitation: "6 cm diameter" is not stated as inside or outside, and 6 cm is also the Shot Glass Jar's figure: same listed diameter, different capacity, which is the mirror image of this post's question.

wick · your wick and its neighbour
Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
The page describes wicks "crafted from natural fibers like cotton and paper" and states no width, length or jar diameter, so no page can tell you whether a C2 that works in one jar works in another. For the proof test you need your proven wick and the neighbour on the side the diameter points to: one size up if the new jar is wider inside, one size down if it is narrower. If C2 is your wick and the new jar is wider, the next rung up is Cotton Braided Ready Made (₹12.00 a wick), whose page positions it for candles "exceeding 8 cm".

wax · hold it constant
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
The page describes "up to 13% fragrance load capacity". The two-ceilings rule applies: British Rose's page states candles "up to 10% soy", so 10% is your ceiling with that oil, and the worked example uses 8%. For a proof test the wax must be the one you already proved the wick in; if that was CSI 464, use CSI 464. Limitation: the page states no pour temperature in the text we checked and no wick guidance; follow your usual method.
Size Price Per gram Candles at 138 g wax
500 g ₹299.00 ₹0.60 3
1 kg ₹599.00 ₹0.60 7
5 kg ₹2,995.00 ₹0.60 36
10 kg ₹5,999.00 ₹0.60 72
₹0.60 per gram at every size; 1 kg covers the six-candle proof. Buy 1 kg — ₹599.00
When the right purchase is nothing: if you already have five or six of the new jar, your proven wick and its neighbour, and enough wax and oil for six candles, the proof costs you nothing from us. Run it before the next production pour, and buy only once you know which wick the new jar takes.

The money: proof against a 100-candle switch

Many jar switches are made to save money. The proof test is how you keep the saving.

Worked example: switching a 150 g candle at 8% from the 200 ml Matte jar to the 200ml Salsa jar. The saving is real: ₹70.80 per Matte jar against ₹29.50 per Salsa jar at 100 Pcs, so 100 jars cost ₹4,130.00 less. Prices are CSI live pricing on 26 September 2026; costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Eco C1 and C2 6 wicks across two sizes 10 + 10 ₹153.40
Total 6 candles 172 g wax and 28 g oil left over ₹1,295.20

The C1 pack assumes the Salsa jar measures narrower than the Matte, so C1 is the neighbour; if it measures wider, swap it for ten Cotton Braided (₹120.00) and the kit is ₹1,356.20. If you already hold both wick sizes, the proof is ₹1,141.80. British Rose is our example because its page states candles "up to 10% soy" and every size is in stock; it is ₹3.42 per gram at 100 g and ₹3.07 at 1 kg. Use the oil the wick was proven with, or the proof proves nothing.

What the proof protects

The proof is 7.4% of that order, and 31% of the jar saving the switch was meant to deliver. If the same wick fails in the Salsa jar, finding out on five jars costs ₹200.60 in glass; finding out on a hundred costs the hundred candles, the time to melt out and re-wick them, and the customers who burned them first.

Argued against our own interest: don't order 100 Salsa jars "because they are the same 200 ml". They may well work with your wick, and they are cheaper; but the Salsa page states no diameter, and you should know yours before you commit. Buy 5 Pcs, prove it, then ask us for the 100-jar quote. The wick packs are flat per wick at every size, so there is no reason to buy a 100-pack of either until the test has picked one.
Timing, if the switch is for Diwali
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 43 days from 26 September 2026. A proof test needs a pour, a cure and several burns to reach the final third: plan roughly two weeks from the jars arriving, and confirm dispatch time to your city on WhatsApp before counting backwards. If it cannot be proven in time, pour Diwali in the jar you have already proven and switch afterwards.
Switching jars before Diwali, 8 November 2026? Prove the wick on five jars first, then order 100 Salsa jars at ₹29.50 each with wax and oil on one GST invoice. Send us your proof-test result and candle count for a quote and dispatch date.

The CSI principle
The label counts millilitres. The wick counts centimetres.
Same capacity, different diameter means a different pool, and a different pool means the wick has to prove itself again, next to a control, before a hundred candles depend on it.
"Two jars can hold the same 130 g and ask the flame to melt very different circles. Measure the circle."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wicks, wax and oil named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page uses our own listings as the warning: same-capacity containers we sell at different diameters, a jar page that states no diameter at all, a pack whose title and description disagree on the count, and a recommendation to buy five jars rather than a hundred. That is deliberate: a maker who proves the wick keeps the saving the switch was for.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock on that date, and the two out-of-stock ceramic containers are named as such and not offered. Capacity and dimension wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.

The 0.35 cm wall, the inside diameters derived from it and the 150 g candle are illustrative; the 3 to 4 hour full pool and stopping at about 1 cm of wax are rules of thumb or common practice; the prediction and outcome tables are editorial judgement. Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same wick for different candle jars of the same size?
Only if "same size" means the same inside diameter at pool height, and a side-by-side burn confirms it. Same capacity is not enough: CSI lists two 130 g containers at 6 cm and 7.5 cm across, about 64.6% apart in inside pool area.
Does jar capacity or diameter decide the wick size?
Diameter. The wick has to melt a pool from the centre to the glass, and that circle is set by the inside diameter. Capacity is diameter and height combined, so it cannot tell you the circle.
What happens if I use the same wick in a wider jar?
It tends to leave a ring of unmelted wax at the glass after the first burn, which deepens into tunnelling over later burns. In a narrower jar the same wick tends to melt fast and deep, with a taller flame and hotter glass.
How do I test if a wick works in a new jar?
Burn a control candle in the jar the wick already passes in next to three candles in the new jar on the same wick and two on the neighbouring size, all from one batch. Keep the wick only if the new-jar candles match the control through to the final third.
Is the 200 ml Salsa jar the same diameter as the 200 ml Matte jar?
The pages do not say. The Matte page states "width 7 cm"; the Salsa page states only a 63 mm lug cap and a wide mouth. Measure both insides at pool height before carrying a wick across.
How much does it cost to test a wick in a new jar?
In the worked example, five 200ml Salsa jars, 1 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 100 g of British Rose and ten each of C1 and C2 come to ₹1,295.20, or ₹1,141.80 if you already hold both wick sizes.
Same capacity, proven wick
Five jars and a control candle, ₹1,295.20.
Measure both insides, predict which way the new jar will go, and burn the control, three same-wick and two neighbour-wick candles together. You will know whether the wick carries over before the first hundred are poured.

About this guide: part of CSI's jar-diameter and wick-selection cluster. It answers whether two jars of the same capacity can share a wick (not by default), shows the worked area difference for same-capacity pairs in CSI's own listings, explains how to predict the direction of failure, sets out a control-and-neighbour proof test and compares its cost with a 100-candle jar switch. It does not give a definitive wick for any jar.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — British Rose Fragrance Oil, Eco Candle Wicks, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles, White Matte Glass Jar. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the container advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Arshad Shaikh, Sakshi Jain, Jinal Patel, Monika Deep. The reviews from Ashwini, Emma Bechara are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: listed diameters are quoted as written and not stated as inside or outside; the 0.35 cm wall used to derive inside figures is illustrative; pool area = π × r². The 3 to 4 hour full pool and stopping at about 1 cm of wax are rules of thumb or common practice. The 150 g candle at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax) is a worked example. Wax ceilings are as stated on the wax pages (formulation limits, not regulatory limits). Dates are calendar facts. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
