CSI bases and bottles for a ten-bottle clarity ladder — Depth, Longevity and Pure Performance at 20, 25 and 30% plus a control — using your own oil · CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which base takes the highest load? Unknown until you ladder it. All five CSI pages give 10–30%; Depth's page claims to stabilise sweet and spicy oils — a claim to test.

Why does it go cloudy? The carrier cannot keep all of the oil dissolved at that load, often worse when cool. Water in the bottle and air bubbles can mimic it.

How do I fix it? Step the load down 5 points, or use the base the oil's family points to. Never add water or alcohol.

Can I use 30%? Only if it is clear at 7 days and after a cool night and within the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit — the lowest ceiling wins. See the three ceilings.
The short answer
Answer: No CSI base is published as the most load-tolerant; all five pages give 10–30%. The highest clear load depends on the oil-and-base pair, so find it with a clarity ladder and cap it at the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit.
Why: Clouding or separation means the carrier cannot keep the oil dissolved at that load; heavy and very sweet materials are commonly involved, and cool nights make it worse.
Method: 3 loads × 3 bases in 30 g fills, no reeds, plus a 15% control; read at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night with a torch-beam check. Then compare the highest clear load with 20% in reeded bottles.
The clarity ladder: find each base's clear ceiling for your oil 3 loads × 3 bases, 30 g each, no reeds · read at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days and after a cool night 20% oil 25% oil 30% oil Depth page: spiced vanilla clear? clear? clear? Longevity page: spicy, gourmand clear? clear? clear? Pure Performance page: neutral, all clear? clear? clear? page maximum 30% Ceiling = the highest load still clear and single-phase at 7 days and after a cool night. Then cap it at the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit — the lower of the two wins — and check in reeded bottles that the higher load is actually stronger.
The clarity ladder: three candidate bases at three loads, small fills, no reeds, read over a week and after a cool night. Each base's clear ceiling for your oil is the highest load still clear at every checkpoint — then capped at the base page's 30% and the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit, whichever is lower.
Straight answer
Which reed diffuser base works best with high fragrance loads without causing separation or cloudiness?
No CSI base is published as the most load-tolerant — the highest load that stays clear belongs to your oil-and-base pair, so find it with a ten-bottle clarity ladder. All five in-stock bases give 10–30% of the total blend on their pages. Depth's page says it "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils", and Longevity's warns that heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases — so for a sweet-spicy oil, ladder Depth, Longevity and the neutral Pure Performance at 20%, 25% and 30% by weight in 30 g fills, without reeds, plus a 15% control. Read every bottle at 0, 24 and 48 hours, at 7 days and after a cool night, against white and black cards and with a torch beam. Each base's clear ceiling is the highest load clear at every checkpoint. Cap it at the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit — ask CSI on WhatsApp for the certificate — because the lowest ceiling wins. Then check in reeded bottles that the higher load is actually stronger; if not, use 20%. Never add water or alcohol to clear a blend. The ladder costs ₹3,546.00 in CSI bases and bottles.
One line: ladder your oil in the candidate bases, keep the highest load that stays clear and sits inside its IFRA limit, and pay for it only if it smells stronger.
For a sweet-spicy oil at high load, the CSI base whose page claims to help is Depth Base: it "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils" — a claim to test. A nine-bottle clarity ladder in Depth, Longevity and Pure Performance at 20, 25 and 30% costs ₹3,546.00 in bases and bottles with your own oil.
See Depth Base

The short answer: no base is published as the most load-tolerant — find each one's ceiling

Every CSI base page says up to 30%. None says every oil will stay clear at 30% in it. The ceiling is a property of the pair, not the base.

All five in-stock CSI bases give the same fragrance range on their pages: about 10% to start, up to 30% of the total blend. That is the maker's working range, not a promise that any particular oil stays clear at the top of it. The Longevity page is explicit about this: "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest — heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases." Whether a blend separates or turns hazy depends on the oil and the base together, and fragrance oils vary enormously in what they contain. So no one can tell you from the labels which base will carry your oil highest.

What you can do is find out quickly. A clarity ladder — small blends of your oil at three loads in each candidate base, with no reeds, watched over a week — shows the highest load each base holds clear for your oil. It takes ten bottles and seven days, and it costs far less than a failed production batch. Then cap that ceiling at the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit, because the lower of the two always wins, and check in reeded bottles that the higher load is actually stronger in a room; it often is not.

The worked example uses Cinnamon Vanilla — sweet and spicy, the kind of oil Depth's page says it stabilises — in Depth, in Longevity (its page names spicy and gourmand families) and in Pure Performance (the neutral base), at 20%, 25% and 30% by weight. Depth's "stabilises" line is a page claim, not a measurement, and this test is how you check it.

Two pillars sit behind this page: which reed diffuser base to buy for the family shortlist, and how much fragrance oil to add to 100 ml of base for load maths and IFRA Category 10A. This page owns the narrow question of which base stays clear at the top of the range.

The CSI principle
The highest clear load belongs to the oil-and-base pair. Find it with a ladder, cap it at the oil's IFRA limit, and confirm it is actually stronger before you pay for it.
A 30% blend that clouds in week two, exceeds the oil's Category 10A limit, or smells no stronger than 20% is not a high-load success.

Why blends cloud or separate at high loads

A clear diffuser blend is a single liquid phase: the fragrance oil is fully dissolved in the carrier. As you add more oil, you ask the carrier to hold more of it, and some fragrance materials are less willing to stay dissolved than others. When the carrier cannot hold them, the blend can turn hazy (fine droplets scattered through it), form a layer at the top or bottom, or drop a sediment. Cool temperatures commonly make this worse, which is why a blend that looks perfect at 3 pm can look milky after a cold night.

Heavy, resinous and very sweet materials are commonly associated with this — the Longevity page names oud, and makers frequently report the same with some vanillas, ambers and musks. But a single "vanilla" oil can contain very different ingredients from another "vanilla", so you cannot read compatibility from the name. Other causes are worth ruling out before you blame the base: water or residue in a bottle that was not fully dry, an oil that is already slightly hazy in its own bottle, and mixing too vigorously so that fine air bubbles look like haze for the first hour. Making a diffuser that does not turn cloudy and a diffuser cloudy after mixing cover the diagnosis side in depth.

General practice · how incompatibility commonly shows in a clear glass bottle
What you might see, and what to do
You see Commonly means First response
Fine bubbles that rise and clear within an hour Air from mixing, not incompatibility Wait; invert gently next time instead of shaking
An even haze that does not clear in 24–48 h The oil is not fully dissolved at this load Step down 5 points
A haze that appears only after a cool night Borderline at this load in cooler conditions Treat as a fail for products sold into cool months — 7975
A distinct layer at top or bottom Separation Fail at this load; step down 5 points or change base
Sediment or specks Insoluble material, or contamination Check the neat oil and bottle cleanliness first
The neat oil itself is hazy Not a base problem Ask CSI about that oil before testing further
The common mistake: fixing cloudiness with water or alcohol. A blend goes milky at 30% and a maker adds a splash of alcohol to clear it, or worse, water. It may clear — and now the product is a different, untested formula with a flammability question (alcohol) or a separation risk (water) its base was never designed for. Fix: the only two honest fixes are a lower load or a different base. Never add water or alcohol to rescue a reed diffuser blend.

Step 1: the clarity ladder

Clarity is tested without reeds, in small fills, so it is cheap and quick. Each of the 9 ladder bottles holds 30 g of blend — enough to see through clearly in a 50 ml Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 50 ml — weighed by load. The tenth bottle is a control: Pure Performance at 15%, low enough that it should stay clear, so you can see whether a haze is about load or about something in your process.

Per ladder bottle · 30 g of blend · by weight
Oil and base grams at each step
Load Oil Base
15% 4.5 g 25.5 g
20% 6.0 g 24.0 g
25% 7.5 g 22.5 g
30% 9.0 g 21.0 g
1
Wash, dry fully, numberWash and dry every bottle completely — a trace of water can cloud a blend on its own. Number them L1–L9 and C0 on the base and note which base and load each gets.
2
Weigh base, then oil, into each bottleTare, add the base, add the oil, cap and invert gently ten times. Do not shake; fine bubbles look like haze for the first hour. Record the actual grams.
3
Read at 0 h, 24 h and 48 hAgainst a white card and a black card, in the same light every time. Then shine a phone torch through the side in a dim room: a clear blend shows little or no beam; a hazy one scatters a visible beam. Score each bottle: C (clear), H (haze), L (layer), S (sediment).
4
Read at 7 daysThe CSI pages' 24–48 hour rest is the minimum. A week catches slow hazes that would otherwise appear on a shop shelf.
5
The cool-night checkAfter the 7-day reading, put all ten bottles somewhere cool for a night (example: a few hours in a fridge door), then read them cold and again after they return to room temperature. A blend that clears as it warms is borderline; one that stays hazy fails.

Each base's clear ceiling for this oil is the highest load that scored C at every checkpoint, including the cold reading. If a base passes at 30%, its ceiling is at least 30% — but you should not go higher than the page's maximum anyway. If it fails at 20%, its ceiling is below the series' usual starting point, and that base is probably the wrong one for this oil. If C0 — the low-load control — is hazy, stop: something other than load is wrong, most often bottle cleanliness or the oil itself.

Ten bottles, one week, one decision
The ladder costs bottles and base, not reeds, and gives you the most important answer before any performance testing. Keep the ladder bottles: they are your clarity reference for every future batch of this oil, and you can compare a new lot of the oil or base against them side by side.

The ceiling that matters more: the oil's IFRA limit

Finding that a base holds an oil clear at 30% does not mean you may use 30%. Reed diffusers are listed under IFRA Category 10A in current IFRA amendments, as suppliers' IFRA guides commonly summarise them — confirm against the category descriptions on the certificate itself. Each fragrance oil's IFRA certificate gives a maximum for each category, and some oils' Category 10A maximum is well below 30%. The lower of the base page's ceiling, your clarity ceiling and the oil's Category 10A limit is the one you must use.

Three ceilings · the lowest wins · fill in for each oil

Clear ceiling Your clarity ladder, at 7 days and after a cool night ___%
IFRA Category 10A limit The oil's IFRA certificate — ask CSI on WhatsApp ___%
Usable maximum The lowest of the three ___%

CSI does not publish an IFRA percentage for any oil on its product pages, and this page does not state one for Cinnamon Vanilla or any other oil. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for the certificate of the specific oil you will use and read its Category 10A line. Determining the maximum percentage from supplier data and IFRA 10A walks through reading a certificate, and an oil whose certificate allows less than 25% covers what to do when the certificate is the binding limit.

Step 2: is the high load actually stronger?

More oil in the bottle is not the same as more fragrance in the room.

A high load costs more and puts more demand on clarity; it is only worth it if the diffuser smells clearly stronger in a room, or lasts longer at the same strength. It may not. Very high loads can change how a blend travels up and leaves the reeds, and a heavier blend can clog reeds sooner. Does more fragrance oil always make a diffuser stronger? explores why. So once the ladder has shown the highest clear load, compare it with 20% in reeded bottles in the winning base.

Weigh each reeded bottle on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 for grams per day, score blind in a closed room on days 7, 14 and 21 on your written house scale, and photograph the reeds at day 21. A working rule: the high load earns its cost only if all three of its bottles score at least one point higher than the lowest 20% bottle at day 14 and day 21, its hold-back is still clear, and its reeds look no worse. If the scores are within a point, use 20% and keep the saving.

What a high load costs

At production rates — Cinnamon Vanilla at its 1 kg rate of ₹4.55 per gram, Depth at ₹1,099.00 per 500 ml converted at the example 1.00 g per ml — a 45 ml bottle's liquid costs this much at each load. The oil is dearer per gram than the base, so every 5-point step up the ladder adds cost.

Per 50 ml bottle · 45 g fill · liquid only · excludes bottle, reeds, labels, freight and GST
Liquid cost by load, in Depth Base
Load Oil Base Oil ₹ Base ₹ Liquid per bottle
15% 6.75 g 38.25 g ₹30.74 ₹84.07 ₹114.82
20% 9.00 g 36.00 g ₹40.99 ₹79.13 ₹120.12
25% 11.25 g 33.75 g ₹51.24 ₹74.18 ₹125.42
30% 13.50 g 31.50 g ₹61.49 ₹69.24 ₹130.73

Going from 20% to 30% adds ₹10.61 per 50 ml bottle — ₹10,605.60 per thousand bottles. That is worth paying for a product that is clearly stronger, and not worth paying for one that smells the same. Saving per 1,000 diffusers by moving from 25% to 20% runs the same arithmetic at volume, and the most economical fragrance percentage sets it against throw and product life.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. If Pure Performance holds your oil clear at the load you need, you do not need Depth or Longevity for it — and if step 2 shows 20% smells as strong as 30%, you should buy about a third less oil per bottle, which is ₹10.61 less from us on every 50 ml diffuser. The family bases earn their place only where the ladder shows them holding a load the neutral base cannot, and step 2 shows that load is worth having.
Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. The clarity ladder takes a week and fits before it; the reeded step 2 does not, fully. If you need a high-load festive product, run step 1 now, choose the highest load that is clear at 7 days, after a cool night and within the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit, and ship at that or one step lower. Send us your oil and target load on WhatsApp — we will send its IFRA certificate where available and help you plan the ladder.

The decision rule

Working decision rule · apply after step 1, then step 2 · stop at the first true line
From the ladder to a base and a load
If this is true It means Do this
C0 (the low-load control) is hazy Process or oil problem, not load Buy nothing. Check bottle dryness and the neat oil first
No base is clear at 20% This oil is hard to carry at a working load Try the oil's family base at 15%, or ask CSI about the oil — 7950
One base is clear at a higher load than the others It carries this oil best Run step 2 in that base; buy its 500 ml if step 2 passes
Two or more bases share the highest clear load Clarity does not separate them Choose by performance in step 2, or by price — Pure Performance if you want one SKU
The oil's IFRA Category 10A limit is below the clear ceiling The certificate binds Use the IFRA limit; the higher clarity is irrelevant
Step 2: high load is not a point stronger at day 14 and 21 Extra oil buys nothing Use 20% and keep the saving
Step 2: high load is stronger, clear and reeds are fine A real high-load formula Adopt it — repeat once with more bottles before production

Write the clear ceiling, the IFRA limit and the chosen load on each SKU's formula sheet, with the lot numbers of the oil and base that were tested. Re-run the ladder when either lot changes — a quick three-bottle check at your chosen load and one step above is usually enough. The clarity tests to do before buying 5 kg turns this into a purchase gate.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy answer for a base seller is "our premium base takes 30% with any oil". This page quotes each base's own load range, points out that none promises clarity at the top of it, refuses to rank the bases on tolerance, and shows when the cheaper answer — 20% in the neutral base — is the right one.

Base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026; fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, ml-to-gram conversion, per-bottle cost, kit total and cost-per-day figure on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity or evaporation data for its bases, so every density used here is a labelled example and every g/day figure is either yours to measure or a labelled arithmetic grid.

Bottle counts per arm, weighing days, the clarity checkpoints, the room-scoring protocol and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 30 g ladder fills, the 15% control, the torch-beam check, the cool-night step, the 45 ml step-2 fill, the 1.00 g per ml density and the 30% example ceiling are labelled working choices; no IFRA limit is stated for any oil. Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum fragrance load for reed diffusers?
CSI's base pages give up to 30% of the total blend. The oil's IFRA Category 10A limit also applies, and your own clarity test may show a lower clear ceiling; use the lowest of the three.
Why is my reed diffuser oil separating?
The carrier cannot keep all of the oil dissolved at that load, or something else — water in the bottle, an already hazy oil — is involved. Step the load down 5 points or try the base the oil's family points to. Never add water or alcohol.
Why does my reed diffuser go cloudy in winter?
Many blends that are borderline at room temperature haze when cool. Include a cool-night check in your clarity test, and treat a blend that hazes when cold as a fail for products sold into cooler months.
Can I use 30% fragrance oil in reed diffusers?
Only if the blend is clear at 7 days and after a cool night in your base, 30% is within the oil's IFRA Category 10A limit, and a reeded test shows it is actually stronger than a lower load.
Which diffuser base is best for vanilla fragrance oils?
CSI's Depth Base page names spiced vanilla and claims to stabilise sweet and spicy oils; Softness names light gourmand such as vanilla milk. Neither is a guarantee — ladder your vanilla in both against Pure Performance.
How do I check if my diffuser blend is compatible?
Mix by weight in clean, dry clear glass and read it against white and black cards at 0, 24 and 48 hours, at 7 days and after a cool night; shine a torch through it in a dim room. A pass is clear and single-phase at every checkpoint.
Ladder before you load
Find the clear ceiling. Cap it at IFRA 10A. Pay for it only if it is stronger.
Depth, Lift and Softness Base ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml, Longevity ₹1,296.00, Pure Performance from ₹325.00 for 100 g; Gold 50 ml bottles ₹826.00 for ten; Cinnamon Vanilla from ₹106.20 for 15 g. Tell us your oil and target load and we will help you plan the ladder and send the oil's IFRA certificate where available.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The clarity ladder, the three-ceiling rule and the decision rule apply to any base and any oil; the products named are CSI's.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Where millilitres are turned into grams, the page uses a labelled example density of 1.00 g per ml with a ±5% sensitivity (0.95–1.05 g/ml) — weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours; the 120 ml and 50 ml bottle sizes are listing sizes, not fill lines. Step 1: 30 g per ladder bottle at 20%, 25%, 30% in three bases plus a 15% Pure Performance control; 5% allowance; readings C/H/L/S at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 7 days, cold and back at room temperature, with a phone-torch beam check. Step 2: 45 ml example fill = 45 g at the example density; 30% (example ceiling) = 13.50 g oil + 31.50 g base; 20% = 9.0 g oil + 36.0 g base; 3 reeded bottles per load plus a hold-back each; 6 white reeds; weighings days 0–21; blind scores days 7, 14 and 21. Liquid costs use the oil's 1 kg rate and Depth's 500 ml price at the example density. No IFRA Category 10A limit is stated for any oil; reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A as commonly summarised by suppliers' IFRA guides. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI measurements): every base page gives a 10–30% fragrance range of the total blend and a 24–48 hour rest before bottling; Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", avoid light florals, fresh citrus and aquatics, "heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load in some bases", 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — "perfumery-grade", floral, citrus, green and fruity families; Depth — warmth, roundness, "slow diffusion", chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils"; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand. Marketing lines such as "performs in Indian climates", "no separation" and "even wicking" are claims to test. Some base pages mention rattan; CSI sells fibre reeds, not rattan. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any base, and no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; reed diameter, bottle neck size and fill line are not published. No CSI base is ranked above another on this page — the five are separated only by what their own pages say they are for. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
