Reed Diffuser Bases × Premium Base, Lower Load
A dearer base pays for itself only if your oil is dear enough for the break-even load to be within reach, and only if a blind test shows the lower-load formula matches your current one. Calculate first; test second; buy third.
20.5%
Longevity's break-even load against Pure Performance at 25%, with Santal Noir at its 1 kg rate — below it, Longevity's bottle is cheaper · CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Is a more expensive diffuser base worth it? Only if two things hold: your oil is dear enough that the break-even load is reachable, and a blind test shows the dearer base matches your current formula at or below it.

What is the break-even load? The load at which the dearer base's bottle costs the same. Santal Noir: 20.5%. Woody Oud: 9.8%. Citrus Lemon: never.

Which CSI base is the dearer one? Longevity, ₹1,296.00 / 500 ml. Pure Performance, Lift, Depth and Softness are ₹1,099.00. HyperDiffusion is out of stock.

What does the test cost? ₹5,564.00 in CSI materials for a control and a three-rung ladder in twelve 50 ml bottles. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: A dearer base is worth it only if (1) the load at which it breaks even on cost is realistically reachable for your oil, and (2) a blind ladder test shows it matches your current formula at or below that load.
Why: The base premium is paid on every gram of base; the oil saving is earned only on the grams of oil removed. Cheap oils give almost no saving; dear oils give more. CSI publishes no lower-load performance claim for any base.
Method: Break-even L₂ = (L₁ × oil + (1 − L₁) × cheap base − dear base) ÷ (oil − dear base). Then Pure Performance at 25% against Longevity at 25%, 20% and 15%, three 50 ml bottles each, weighed and scored blind.
When does the dearer base pay for itself? Liquid cost against load 45 g bottle · Santal Noir at its 1 kg rate · bases at the 500 ml rate, example 1.00 g/ml · arithmetic, not performance 10% 15% 20% 25% 30% ₹140 ₹160 ₹180 ₹200 fragrance load (share of blend by weight) Pure Performance at 25%: ₹176.78 Longevity breaks even at 20.5% Pure Performance Longevity (dearer base) Left of the open circle, Longevity's bottle is cheaper; right of it, dearer. It only matters if Longevity at that lower load matches Pure Performance at 25% on your blind room score and your g/day window. That is what the test decides.
Liquid cost of a 45 g bottle against fragrance load for Pure Performance (solid) and the dearer Longevity (dashed), with Santal Noir at its 1 kg rate and both bases at an example 1.00 g per ml. The lines are arithmetic, not performance: Longevity's bottle is cheaper only to the left of 20.5%, and only matters if it performs as well there.
Straight answer
Is a more expensive reed diffuser base worth buying if it gives better fragrance diffusion at a lower fragrance percentage?
Only if two things are true: your oil is expensive enough that the break-even load is reachable, and a blind test shows the dearer base really matches your current formula at or below that load. The base premium is paid on every gram of base; the saving is earned only on the oil you remove. Solve for the break-even: L₂ = (L₁ × oil + (1 − L₁) × cheaper base − dearer base) ÷ (oil − dearer base). Against Pure Performance Base at 25%, CSI's dearer in-stock base, Longevity Base (₹1,296.00 for 500 ml), breaks even at 20.5% with Santal Noir, 9.8% with Woody Oud — and never with Citrus Lemon, whose price is close to the base's. CSI's pages make no lower-load claim, so test it: Pure Performance at 25% against Longevity at 25%, 20% and 15%, blind, weighed for 14 days. Buy Longevity only if it matches at or below the break-even. The kit costs ₹5,564.00.
One line: dear oil, reachable break-even, blind match — all three, or keep your formula.
The dearer of CSI's in-stock bases is Longevity Base at ₹1,296.00 for 500 ml (₹2.59 per ml) against ₹1,099.00 (₹2.20 per ml) for Pure Performance Base, Lift, Depth and Softness. Before paying the difference, test whether it really lets you drop the load — one 500 ml of Longevity and two 100 g packs of Pure Performance run the whole test.

Worth it only if two things are true — and one depends on your oil's price

A dearer base can make a cheaper diffuser. Whether it does is arithmetic first and a blind test second.

The idea in your question is sound. A diffuser's liquid is mostly base and partly fragrance oil, and fragrance oil is usually the dearer of the two per gram. If a better-performing base lets you get the same result with less oil, the saving on oil can outweigh the extra you pay for the base. But that sentence hides two conditions. First, the saving has to exist on paper: the oil must be expensive enough, relative to the base premium, that the load reduction you hope for actually pays for the dearer base. With a cheap oil, it never does. Second, the performance has to be real: the dearer base at the lower load must match the cheaper base at the higher load on throw and life in a blind test — in your bottle, with your oil.

CSI's pages do not settle the second condition for you. They publish no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, and none of them claims to let you use less fragrance. Longevity's page describes slower "cold diffusion" for oriental/amber, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand families; CSI HyperDiffusion Base™, whose page calls it the strongest-projection base, is out of stock and cannot be offered. So the straight answer is: calculate the break-even load for your oil first; if the dearer base would have to perform at an implausibly low load to break even, stop there. If the break-even is within reach, run a load ladder in the dearer base against the cheaper base at your current load, blind, and buy the dearer base only if it matches at or below the break-even.

The CSI principle
A base premium is paid on every gram of base. An oil saving is earned only on the grams you no longer use. Do the sum before the test.
The break-even load tells you how good the dearer base has to be. If it has to work at half your current load to pay off, the test is not worth running.

The break-even load, for your oil

Write the liquid cost per gram of blend as L × oil ₹/g + (1 − L) × base ₹/g. Put the cheaper base at your current load on one side and the dearer base at an unknown load on the other, and solve for the load at which they cost the same. That is the break-even: L₂ = (L₁ × oil + (1 − L₁) × cheap base − dear base) ÷ (oil − dear base). Below L₂ the dearer base's bottle is cheaper; above it, dearer. With Pure Performance at 25% — the "typical working blend" on its page — and Longevity as the dearer base, both at the example 1.00 g per ml, the break-even for each oil is:

Cheaper base: Pure Performance at 25% · dearer base: Longevity · oils at their 1 kg rate · bases at 500 ml rate, example 1.00 g/ml
How low Longevity's load must go before it saves money
Oil Oil ₹/g Liquid ₹/g in PP at 25% Longevity break-even load Points of load Longevity must save
Santal Noir ₹9.12 ₹3.93 20.5% 4.5
Midnight Bakhoor Royale ₹8.00 ₹3.65 19.5% 5.5
Dark Vanilla Oud ₹5.69 ₹3.07 15.5% 9.5
Woody Oud ₹4.53 ₹2.78 9.8% 15.2
Citrus Lemon ₹2.83 ₹2.36 Never — oil barely dearer than base —

Read the table from the bottom. With Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83 a gram, the oil costs barely more than Longevity itself (₹2.59 a gram at the example density), so removing oil and adding base saves almost nothing — Longevity can never be the cheaper bottle. With Woody Oud, it breaks even only at 9.8%. With Santal Noir at ₹9.12 a gram, Longevity breaks even at 20.5%: if it matches Pure Performance at 25% while running at 20%, it is cheaper per bottle. The pattern is general: the dearer your oil, the more a better base can save, and the smaller the load cut it needs. At ±5% density the Santal Noir break-even moves between 20.8% and 20.1%; weigh 100 ml of each base to pin it down.

45 g bottle · Santal Noir · liquid only · production rates · example density 1.00 g/ml
The per-bottle numbers behind the Santal Noir row
Formula Oil Base Liquid per bottle vs Pure Performance at 25% Per 1,000 bottles
Pure Performance 25% 11.25 g 33.75 g ₹176.78 — —
Longevity 25% 11.25 g 33.75 g ₹190.08 ₹13.30 costs ₹13,297.50 more
Longevity 20% 9.00 g 36.00 g ₹175.39 -₹1.39 saves ₹1,390.50
Longevity 15% 6.75 g 38.25 g ₹160.70 -₹16.08 saves ₹16,078.50
Then think per day, not per bottle
A lower load can also change how fast the bottle empties, and the base itself may release more slowly — Longevity's page describes slower "cold diffusion". If Pure Performance at 25% loses an example 1.2 g a day, its 45 g lasts 37.5 days. A Longevity bottle that matches its room score but lasts longer is worth more than the per-bottle saving alone; one that matches on day 1 but fades by day 14 is worth less. Cost per day = liquid ₹ ÷ days of life. Comparing loads by room throw, liquid consumption and cost per day works that sum in full.

Benefits of a lower load that are not about price

Even where the money is close, a base that performs at a lower load can be worth having for three other reasons. IFRA headroom: every oil has a maximum for the category that covers reed diffusers, commonly listed as Category 10A, and a formula that works at 18% instead of 25% sits further inside that limit — useful if a future certificate tightens it. CSI publishes no IFRA percentage for any oil; ask on WhatsApp for each oil's certificate. Clarity margin: heavier oils are more likely to haze near the top of the range — Longevity's own page warns that heavy oils like oud can cloud at maximum load — so a lower load can mean a more robust blend in a cold January. Oil stock: a lower load stretches every kilogram of an oil that is hard to keep in stock.

And there are reasons the other way. A dearer base is a second base to stock if your other oils stay in the cheaper one. It needs its own clarity checks with every oil. And a lower-load formula may be a different product from the one your customers know — a softer opening, a different character — even if a blind panel scores it the same in a room. Saving per 1,000 diffusers by cutting load from 25% to 20% handles the load cut on its own; a cheap base with weak throw — would a better base improve repeat purchases? looks at the customer side.

The equivalence test: a load ladder in the dearer base

You are not asking which base is stronger. You are asking at what load the dearer base becomes as good as your current formula.

That question needs a control and a ladder. The control is the cheaper base at your current load — here Pure Performance at 25%. The ladder is the dearer base at the same load and at two lower loads: Longevity at 25%, 20% and 15%. The break-even for Santal Noir sits between the 20% and 25% rungs, so the 20% rung is the one that decides the money. Every bottle holds an example 45 g in CSI's 50 ml bottle; 6 white fibre reeds in each; three bottles per arm. The example oil is Santal Noir, chosen because it is dear enough for the question to matter; use your own.

Arm Base Load Oil per bottle Base per bottle Question it answers
A Pure Performance Base 25% 11.25 g 33.75 g Your reference formula
B Longevity Base 25% 11.25 g 33.75 g Is Longevity better at the same load?
C Longevity Base 20% 9.00 g 36.00 g Does it match A near the 20.5% break-even?
D Longevity Base 15% 6.75 g 38.25 g How far can the load drop?
1
Write the equivalence rule firstFor example: an arm matches A if its average blind room score on days 1, 7 and 14 is within 0.3 of A's, no bottle scores below your house pass, and its g/day stays inside your life window. Write it down and do not change it.
2
Mix four blends by weight; gate on clarityOn the Weighing Scale, per arm: three bottles' worth of base and oil at that arm's load. Check against white and black cards at 0 h, 24 h and 48 h — the pages' rest period — and at 7 days. Any hazy arm is out.
3
Fill, reed and weigh45 g per bottle by weight, numbered A1–D3; 6 reeds each; weigh with reeds for day 0. Use one first-flip time for all arms — Longevity's page says 2–3 hours, so flip everything at 3 hours.
4
Weigh and score blindWeights on days 1, 3, 7 and 14 at the same hour; room temperature noted. A helper codes and places one bottle at a time; score 0–5 at 1 m and 3 m after 30 minutes on days 1, 7 and 14.
5
Read the ladder against the break-evenFind the lowest Longevity load that matches A. If it is at or below 20.5% (for Santal Noir at these prices), Longevity is the cheaper bottle at equal performance; if it only matches at 25%, it costs ₹13.30 more per bottle for the same result.
The common mistake: comparing the dearer base at a low load with the cheaper base at a low load. Makers sometimes drop the load in both bases at once and then declare the dearer one "stronger". That answers a different question. Fix: keep the cheaper base at the load you actually sell today — that is the product the dearer base has to match — and ladder only the dearer base.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. Longevity is our most expensive in-stock base, and "use a premium base and save on oil" is an easy story to sell. For a cheap oil it is simply untrue: with Citrus Lemon the arithmetic says Longevity is never the cheaper bottle at any load. And for any oil, unless your blind panel says the lower-load formula matches, the premium is a cost, not a saving. The base pages do not claim lower-load performance; nor do we.

The priced equivalence kit

Listed, in-stock CSI packs only, with a 5% liquid allowance. Pure Performance for arm A needs 106.3 g — two 100 g packs. Longevity for arms B–D needs 340.2 g — one 500 ml at any density above 0.680 g per ml. Santal Noir for all twelve bottles needs 120.5 g, bought as the cheapest mix of its 15 g, 50 g and 100 g sizes.

The decision rule

Working decision rule · break-even from the table · equivalence rule written before day 0
Pay the premium, or not
If this is true It means Do this
Your oil's break-even is "never" or below 15% The premium cannot pay on oil savings Don't buy the dearer base for cost reasons; keep your formula
Longevity matches A only at 25% Same result, higher cost Keep Pure Performance — Longevity adds ₹13.30 per bottle here
Longevity matches A at or below the break-even load Cheaper bottle at equal performance Buy Longevity 500 ml (₹1,296.00); confirm at 14 days
Longevity at 25% beats A clearly Better product, higher cost Your call: price the better product, or keep A
A lower Longevity rung matches on day 1 but fades by day 14 Not equivalent Keep A; or ladder again with more reeds
Any Longevity rung hazes Compatibility at that load That rung is out; read the others

If the answer is yes, write the new formula as a new SKU specification — base, load, reed count, measured g/day — and re-run the clarity checks with every other oil you move into the dearer base. If the answer is no, you have still learned your oil's break-even, which is the number to recheck whenever oil or base prices change. Comparing two bases on five criteria is the general scorecard; the most economical fragrance percentage and how much fragrance oil to add to 100 ml cover load in its own right; heavy oud, amber and sandalwood covers why Longevity is written for these families. The section's pillar is which reed diffuser base to buy in India and its capstone the commercial base selection framework.

The dearer base is worth it when your blind panel says so at a load your calculator says pays. One without the other is a guess.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. Selling a premium base on the promise of using less oil would be easy. This page shows the arithmetic that makes that promise false for cheap oils, says plainly that no CSI base page claims lower-load performance and that CSI publishes no throw data, and tells you when to keep your current formula.

Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance-oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every blend split, base-pack count, per-bottle liquid cost, kit total and cost per day on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; density and grams-per-day figures are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.

Bottle counts per arm, the clarity checkpoints, the weighing schedule, the room-scoring scale and the decision thresholds are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffusers. The 45 g fill, the 25% control load, the 25/20/15% ladder, the 1.2 g/day example, the equivalence rule and the 1,000-bottle scale are labelled examples you replace with your own. Frequently asked questions

Can a better reed diffuser base reduce fragrance oil usage?
Possibly, but no CSI base page claims it and no data is published. Test it: keep your current base at your current load as the control and run the other base at the same and lower loads, blind. Only a match at a lower load proves it.
How do I calculate whether a premium diffuser base saves money?
Find the break-even load: (current load × oil ₹/g + (1 − current load) × cheaper base ₹/g − dearer base ₹/g) ÷ (oil ₹/g − dearer base ₹/g). If the dearer base matches your product at or below that load, its bottle is cheaper.
Why doesn't a premium base save money with cheap fragrance oils?
Because replacing oil with base only saves the price difference between them. If the oil costs little more per gram than the dearer base, removing oil saves almost nothing and the base premium is never recovered.
Which is the most expensive CSI reed diffuser base?
Of the in-stock bases, Longevity at ₹1,296.00 for 500 ml. Pure Performance, Lift, Depth and Softness are ₹1,099.00. CSI HyperDiffusion Base™ (₹1,499.00) was out of stock on 14 October 2026.
Does a lower fragrance load make a reed diffuser last longer?
Not necessarily; life depends on how fast the whole blend leaves the reeds. Weigh the bottles: days of life = fill ÷ grams per day. Compare cost per day as well as cost per bottle.
Is a lower fragrance percentage safer in reed diffusers?
It leaves more headroom under the oil's IFRA limit for the category that covers reed diffusers, and can reduce clouding with heavy oils. Ask for the oil's IFRA certificate and stay within it whatever the base.

They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). Example fill 45 g per 50 ml bottle. Bases at their 500 ml rate with an example density of 1.00 g per ml and ±5% sensitivity; break-evens use each oil's 1 kg rate and Pure Performance at 25% as the control. Working practices: 3 bottles per arm, 6 reeds, first flip at 3 hours for every arm, 5% liquid allowance, clarity at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h and 7 days, weights on days 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14, blind 0–5 scoring at 1 m and 3 m on days 1, 7 and 14. Labelled examples: equivalence margin 0.3 points, 1.2 g/day, 1,000-bottle scale. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, start at 10%, maximum 30%, 20% recommended, typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours, flip reeds after the first hour; Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand, "slow diffusion", 10–30%; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%; all five say rest 24–48 hours and describe themselves as crystal clear. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; 6–8 reeds for a standard 50–100 ml bottle, more for stronger and faster diffusion, fewer for subtler and longer-lasting. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point, shelf life or SDS figure for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; and no IFRA limit for any oil. Any density on this page is a labelled example the reader replaces with a weighed figure; any g/day is a labelled example the reader replaces with a measured one. Material costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
